Chinese People's Perceptions Of And Preparedness For Democracy, Xiangyun Lan
Chinese People's Perceptions Of And Preparedness For Democracy, Xiangyun Lan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Democratization in China has been receiving attention from all over the world. In the US, a large percentage of media reports about China contribute to report democratization related political issues. And as a mainland Chinese citizen living under an undemocratic regime, I have always felt compelled to do research on democratization in China society. This thesis describes a research study conducted to understand how Chinese people understand the notion of democracy, and with this notion how they perceive to democratize their society. The result of this research's analysis shows that Chinese people view democracy similar to a western notion; and …
Winter Ecology Of Waterfowl On The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Josh L. Vest
Winter Ecology Of Waterfowl On The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Josh L. Vest
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I designed a suite of studies in coordination with Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) to evaluate waterfowl use of the GSL in winter and ecological aspects associated with GSL use. These studies provided insight into key information gaps previously identified by UDWR regarding management of GSL resources. Population surveys indicated total duck abundance was low when GSL surface elevations were low and wetland resources diminished because of persistent drought in the system. Also, ducks appear to use hypersaline parts of GSL more when freshwater habitats are limited from either drought or ice conditions. Common goldeneye, northern shoveler, and green-winged …

Regulation And Expression Of Nanog, Oct4, And Sox2 In The Bovine Blastocyst Following Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, Justin Scott Hall
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Sciences Department (ADVS) and the Center for Integrated Biosystems (CIB) at Utah State University are studying various molecular mechanisms involved in the animal cloning process. This study involves the extensive network of people, facilities, equipment, and funding already associated with the CIB and ADVS joint project.
Cloning involves many molecular challenges that for the most part have become roadblocks for the normal development of the fetus. The mechanisms necessary to transform an adult cell into a competent stem cell that can then transform and develop into a healthy organism are poorly understood. Some of these …
Analysis Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Panels For Bovine Dna Identification, Kimberly A. Blanchard
Analysis Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Panels For Bovine Dna Identification, Kimberly A. Blanchard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have great power in resolving questions of unknown parentage on ranches or dairies where errors could have been made in pedigree record keeping or when such records were simply not kept. Currently a panel of 88 SNPs based on a panel originally created by USDA-MARC is commercially available from the company Fluidigm®. Our objective was to determine whether or not the number of SNPs could be reduced to form a smaller, more cost-efficient parentage-testing panel. A smaller panel would be beneficial to farmers and researchers alike in the reduction of time spent running and …
Attentional Factors In Temporal Distortion: The Effects Of Food Availability On Responses Within The Interval Bisection Task, Robert N. Johnson
Attentional Factors In Temporal Distortion: The Effects Of Food Availability On Responses Within The Interval Bisection Task, Robert N. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Time estimation is a process that underlies many complex behaviors. Accurately timed performance depends upon some biological mechanism, which may be revealed by experimental methods. There have been several proposals on the subject of the function of the timing mechanism, some of which have revealed contradictory findings regarding the effect of distraction on timing. Whereas some studies have revealed underestimation (reports of time moving more slowly than it actually is) of the target interval following distracter presentation, others have revealed generalized disruption (no meaningful evidence of timing). The purpose of the present study was to determine whether food presentation for …
An Environmental History Of The Bear River Range, 1860-1910, Bradley Paul Hansen
An Environmental History Of The Bear River Range, 1860-1910, Bradley Paul Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of environmental history suggests that nature and culture change all the time, but that the rate and scale of such change can vary enormously. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Anglo settlement in the American West transformed landscapes and ecologies, creating new and complex environmental problems. This transformation was particularly impressive in Cache Valley, Utah's Bear River Range. From 1860 to 1910, Mormon settlers overused or misused the Bear River Range's lumber, grazing forage, wild game, and water resources and introduced invasive plant and animal species throughout the area.
By the turn of the 20th century, …
Importance Of Grass-Legume Choices On Cattle Grazing Behavior And Performance, Brody Todd Maughan
Importance Of Grass-Legume Choices On Cattle Grazing Behavior And Performance, Brody Todd Maughan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Livestock production systems have emphasized low diversity of high-producing forage species dependent upon costly fossil-fuel inputs. However, diversity of plants in natural systems is common, and diverse plant communities enable herbivores to meet needs for nutrition and health. Plants provide herbivores with nutrients and bioactive compounds – plant secondary compounds (SCs), which at appropriate concentrations can reduce internal parasites and greenhouse gas emissions, improve nutrient utilization and enhance meat quality in ruminants. In addition, SCs confer plants more resistance to environmental challenges such as drought or pests.
With my MS program, I sought to explore foraging behavior in cattle grazing …
Clonal Diversity Of Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides): How Multiple Clones May Add To Theresilience And Persistence Of This Forest Type, Richard Scott Gardner
Clonal Diversity Of Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides): How Multiple Clones May Add To Theresilience And Persistence Of This Forest Type, Richard Scott Gardner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Aspen forests and woodlands are widespread across the western United States and are a primary component of many ecosystems in the west. Aspen is a clonal species, with reproduction occurring both by root sprouting (suckering) and seeding. Traditionally, western aspen forests were thought to consist almost entirely of large clones established several thousands of years ago, with seeding events being rare and ecologically negligible. Although clones in the western US can grow to be many acres, recent studies have demonstrated a far greater proportion of small clones than had been previously thought to exist. In this study I wanted to …
An Analysis Of Auditory Stimulus Generalization Gradients In Children With Autism Following Two Different Training Procedures, Steven N. Corry
An Analysis Of Auditory Stimulus Generalization Gradients In Children With Autism Following Two Different Training Procedures, Steven N. Corry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Previous research suggests learning of children with autism often fails to successfully generalize across changes in settings and stimuli. Much of this research has assessed generalization by first teaching a behavior in one context and then measuring the transfer of the behavior to extra-treatment stimuli and settings. The present study measured generalization of learned behavior by systematically varying the tone of an auditory stimulus present during training to obtain generalization gradients. Generalization gradients are graphical representations of the strength of a response produced by stimuli that vary from the training stimulus along some stimulus dimension. By obtaining generalization gradients, this …
Predictors Of Father-Child And Mother-Child Attachment In Two-Parent Families, Jared P. Benware
Predictors Of Father-Child And Mother-Child Attachment In Two-Parent Families, Jared P. Benware
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Jared Benware, M.S. and Gretchen Gimpel Peacock, Ph.D. at Utah State University examined parent-child attachment in two-parent families. Specifically, the relationship between mother-child and father-child attachment, the relationship between a child's temperament and parent-child attachment, and the relationship between the attachment and the amounts of time a parent spends away from his or her child. The researchers solicited parents as participants to complete questionnaires that measure parent-child attachment and the temperament of their child. This study focused especially on providing more information on the connection between father-child attachment and mother-child attachment rather than focusing only on mothers as the primary …

An Evaluation Of Current Stormwater Best Management Practice Relationships Between Design And Efficiency: A Series Of Local And National Case Studies, Amanda Ann Goodwin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Water quality continues to be threatened by human development activities such as stormwater runoff from urbanization. This study addresses the question of how stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) system design choices affect pollutant removal efficiency, through the examination of 12 case study sites (across five states) that use three common BMP system design types (detention, retention, and wetland channel). Water quality information was obtained from the International Stormwater Database and site composite grab samples. Development conditions were inventoried by orthophotos and assessed using Geographic Information System (GIS) and AutoCAD data.
This study relates Total Suspended Solid (TSS) load removal efficiency …
The Southeast In Context: An Assessment Of The Trauma Associated With Agriculture, Martin Welker
The Southeast In Context: An Assessment Of The Trauma Associated With Agriculture, Martin Welker
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Hunter-gatherer tradition prevailed as the dominant subsistence pattern for most of human history. Between 9,000 and 13,000 years ago peoples in the Levant, New World, and Asia began the domestication and cultivation of wild flora and fauna, creating a subsistence pattern that subsequently spread to neighboring regions (Abbo et al. 2010; Bellwood 2009; Purugganan & Fuller 2009; Richerson et al. 2001). The influence of this agricultural transition on human populations is manifested in various forms in the human skeleton, many of which have received intensive study: dental caries, degenerative joint disease, decreased stature, and increased birth rates (Bridges 1991; Larson …
The First Struggles Of The Capitalistic Peace And Its Detractors: An Analysis Of Greek Trade And Its Effects On Foreign Policy In The Athenian State, Joshua Blume
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Although, a ubiquitous number of articles has arisen recently debating the validity of the so-called "Capitalist Peace," there has been little exploration of the theory from an ancient historical perspective, primarily due to the lack of trade data between countries or city-states. As the primordial birthplace of trade and democracy, there is perhaps no better example than ancient Greece to shed insight into the possible validity of the capitalist peace theory. Utilizing new research involving trade in ancient Greece, this paper seeks to explore the relative validity of the "Capitalist Peace" in ancient Greece by conducting a qualitative analysis of …
Not Shut In By Any Fence, Anna Bullock Brown
Not Shut In By Any Fence, Anna Bullock Brown
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
From their beginning in the mid-l 800s, zoos ( or zoological gardens as they were first known) were meant for both research and education. They offered viewers the opportunity to see animals that they otherwise would never have seen. These animals were kept in cages to protect the zoo-goers. The history of zoos demonstrates a conflicting desire between our human need to connect with animals as well as our fear (literal and metaphoric) of what that connection might mean. Informing this creative project are three main areas of research: primary research in the form of interview, place-based research conducted at …
Visual Narratives: Storytelling In The Digital Age, Stevie Dutson
Visual Narratives: Storytelling In The Digital Age, Stevie Dutson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
This research will identify the components of visual narratives in 2D and 3D animated films and their relation to elements in literature and other earlier forms of storytelling. Over the course of 150 years animation has evolved from phenakistoscopes and flips books to full length feature films. Today, stories need not be grounded by realities in order to be told visually, as in theater. Specialized artists and programmers can create and modify every aspect of environments and characters in order to convey a story most effectively. However, the act of transforming an idea into computer data and later to a …

Thermal Microhabitat Preference Of The Common Side-Blotched Lizard, Uta Stansburiana, Maria Goller
Thermal Microhabitat Preference Of The Common Side-Blotched Lizard, Uta Stansburiana, Maria Goller
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Ectotherms are especially susceptible to changing temperature conditions within their environment. To limit temperature fluctuations they must behaviorally regulate body temperature by moving between microhabitats of different ambient temperatures. By actively selecting specific substrate temperatures within a heterogeneous thermal environment, an individual could attain preferred body temperature and approach internal thermal homeostasis for periods of time. Ambient temperature dependence should thus force an individual to select those microhabitats that present optimal thermal conditions. Because dynamic thermal microhabitat structure is difficult to assess, the extent to which lizards employ behavioral thermoregulation is not well understood. Therefore, there is a need to …

Escherichia Coli: Levels Found In Suva Water And The Implications To Fijians: A Case Study Of The Vatuwaqa River, Hesper D. Kohler
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Urban migration is causing a high increase in the population of Suva, Fiji, and the population is growing at a rate that exceeds development planning and infrastructure. Several squatter settlements are established within the city limits where raw sewage, containing infectious pathogens and diseases, is released into the waterways. This study focuses on the area accumulation of the pathogenic bacteria from fecal contamination in the form of E. coli down the Vatuwaga River. E. coli is used as a water quality indicator because, if it is present, other possible pathogens and viruses such as cholera and salmonella could be present. …

iNetTest is a useful tool to help instructors deliver computer-based tests, but when an instructor gives a test, they would often like to know individual question results, e.g.
- What was the average score for a question, how many got it correct and how many missed it,
- What was the most common answer chosen (for multiple choice, T/F, etc.),
- What was the score for a section?
- What was the average score for a section?
- etc.
Whenever individuals consider such data they often prefer different or multiple ways in which to analyze the data. For that reason, it was decided not to …
Forage Yield And Quality Of Binary Grass-Legume Mixtures Of Tall Fescue, Orchardgrass, Meadow Brome, Alfalfa, Birdsfoot Trefoil, And Cicer Milkvetch, Steven R. Cox
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Managed pasture forms the foundation for much of the U.S. livestock iv production. Increased forage yield and quality can be achieved with nitrogen (N) fertilizer but increases the cost of pasture production. Rising prices of N have led to a return to the use of grass-legume pastures to reduce or replace commercial N fertilizer. There is a need to identify viable grass-legume mixtures and species planting ratios for the region of the Intermountain Western United States The purpose of this study was to identify grass-legume combinations and planting ratios that maximize forage production and forage quality in irrigated pastures. The …
A Middle To Late Holocene Record Of Arroyo Cut-Fill Events In Kitchen Corral Wash, Southern Utah, William M. Huff
A Middle To Late Holocene Record Of Arroyo Cut-Fill Events In Kitchen Corral Wash, Southern Utah, William M. Huff
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Arroyos are steeply entrenched channels that form by incision into weakly consolidated valley-fill alluvium. This study attempts to offers clues into the processes behind their formation by dating arroyo sediments using luminescence and radiocarbon techniques. The importance of understanding arroyo formation is due to a possible linkage with decadal to centennial-scale climate fluctuations. In the 1800s and early 1900s, many of the shallow, perennial streams throughout southern Utah that used for a variety of agricultural and domestic uses were incised up to ~30 m into their alluvium by frequent and high-magnitude flood events. The economical and ecological effects of these …
A Data-Intensive Assessment Of The Species Abundance Distribution, Elita Baldridge
A Data-Intensive Assessment Of The Species Abundance Distribution, Elita Baldridge
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the most commonly observed patterns in ecology is the fact that at most locations there are a large number of relatively rare species, composed of only a few individuals per species, and a small number of relatively common species. This pattern of commonness and rarity is quantified by the species abundance distribution. As one of the most commonly observed patterns in ecology, it has been studied intensively for over 100 years.
A major emphasis of this research has been developing models to try to understand the forces that generate such a general pattern. As a result, there are …

Many conservation plans remain unimplemented, in part because of insufficient consideration of the social processes that influence conservation decisions. Complementing social considerations with an integrated understanding of the ecology of a region can result in a more complete conservation approach. We suggest that linking conservation planning to a social–ecological systems (SES) framework can lead to a more thorough understanding of human–environment interactions and more effective integration of social considerations. By characterizing SES as a set of subsystems, and their interactions with each other and with external factors, the SES framework can improve our understanding of the linkages between social and …

Beef Production & Consumption: Sustainable Alternatives, Jennifer W. Macadam, Roslynn Brain
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
Sustainable living involves choosing a lifestyle with minimal environmental impacts. The ultimate goal is to leave future generations with a healthier environment than the one we were born into. How can we do that with beef consumption? Beef is part of American culture, so is there a way to make wiser choices when it comes to purchasing beef ? The short answer is, yes!
Intensification, Storage, And The Use Of Alpine Habitats In The Central Great Basin: Prehistoric Subsistence Strategies In The Toquima And Toiyabe Ranges, Tod W. Hildebrandt
Intensification, Storage, And The Use Of Alpine Habitats In The Central Great Basin: Prehistoric Subsistence Strategies In The Toquima And Toiyabe Ranges, Tod W. Hildebrandt
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Alpine villages are extremely rare in the Great Basin. To date, villages located at elevations above 10,000 ft. are only known to occur in the White Mountains and the Toquima Range. Demographic forcing has been used to explain the existence of these villages, but this proposition does not identify the selective pressures that led to the establishment of high-elevation villages in some ranges but not others. Comparison of artifact distributions and environmental structure in the Toquima Range, where a village exists, and the Toiyabe Range, where one does not, is consistent with the hypothesis that alpine villages were subsidized by …

Items To Be Included In A Food Safety Handbook For Artisan Cheese Makers, David A. Irish
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Current written resources for artisan cheese makers include topics concerning cheese history, cheese recipes, budget planning, culture selection, processing parameters, and only limited discussion of food safety associated with cheese manufacturing. Most often food safety discussions center on HACCP, which typically are not included in artisan cheese operation planning. Recent changes in the regulatory landscape, including the Food Safety Modernization Act, make this information timely and needed. This research is designed to identify and collect a majority of topical ideas that should be included in a Food Safety Handbook for Artisan Cheese Makers. Where possible, expansion of the ideas has …
Strategies To Enhance Conversion Of Lignocellulosic Biomass To Fermentable Sugars And To Enhance Anaerobic Digestion Of Algal Biomass For Biogas Production, Kristen M. Sims
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
For economical conversion of cellulosic biomass to biofuel sources, such as ethanol and biogas, high concentrations of biomass must be processed to minimize downstream costs associated with dilute solutions. Further, the fundamental processes that drive biomass transformation must be understood in order to optimize conversion processes and to efficiently overcome the technological and economic barriers of biofuel production. One such barrier includes the recalcitrance of biomass to degradation. In order to overcome the recalcitrance of biomass, this study focuses on pretreatment strategies to break down the cell wall components and to make the biomass more susceptible to enzymatic action.
Specifically, …
Land Use And Land Cover Dynamics Under Climate Change In Urbanizing Intermountain West: A Case Study From Cache County, Utah, Enjie Li
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Climate change is tightly linked with urbanization. Urban development with increasing greenhouse gas emission worsens climate change, while climate change in turn influence hydroclimate and ecosystem functions, and indirectly affect urban systems. The Intermountain West is experiencing rapid urban growth, climate change interacting with urbanization poses new challenges to the Intermountain West. Urban planning needs to adapt to these new changes and constrains, and to develop new tools and plans to effectively respond to climate changes. An urban growth model SLEUTH is applied to predict the future urban growth and land use dynamics in the Intermountain west, using Cache County …
