The Demonstration Of Humoral Antibodies Against Eimeria Bovis In Cattle, Lyle Lowder May 1963

The Demonstration Of Humoral Antibodies Against Eimeria Bovis In Cattle, Lyle Lowder

Biology

Cattle are rarely free of coccidia (Marsh, 1938). It is estimated that this disease is responsible for an annual loss of 10 million dollars in the cattle industry; which is second only to the loss caused by liver flukes among internal parasites. The mortality was conservatively estimated to be as high as 29.1 percent in several outbreaks of bovine coccidiosis (Agriculture Research Service, 1954).

Changes In Serum Proteins And Other Blood Values Associated With Ostertagia Ostertagi Infection In Calves, Jerome L. Mahrt May 1963

Changes In Serum Proteins And Other Blood Values Associated With Ostertagia Ostertagi Infection In Calves, Jerome L. Mahrt

Biology

Parasitism causes large economic losses to the livestock industry. Included in this economic loss are death to the host animal, but even more important are the losses due to illness, reduced growth rate, decreased meat, milk, egg, and wool production and, in working animals, loss of working energy (Levine, 1961). Even rough estimates of this economic loss are difficult to make. The United States Department of Agriculture (1954) published a 10 year report (1942-1951) on the annual losses due to parasitism in the United States. According to this report parasitism caused an estimated loss to livestock and poultry of $79,532,000 …

The Site Of The Immune Reaction Against Eimeria Bovis In Calves And The Demonstration Of Antibodies By Immunofluorescence, Ferron L. Andersen

Biology

In 1959 Senger et al. reported that calves which had received a small oral inoculation of Eimeria bovis oocysts were later resistant to larger challenge inoculations. In an investigation on the mechanism of this immune reaction, Hammond et al. (1959) compared the number and size of E. bovis schizonts in immunized and nonimmunized calves, but found no significant difference in the results. They conducted 3 experiments using 28 young male Holstein-Friesian calves, and killed the majority of these calves for examination 17 to 20 days after the challenge inoculation.

Influence Of Temperature And Rate Of Heat Penetration On Some Factors In Charcoal Broiled Porterhouse Steak And Ground Beef, Geraldine Irvine

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Charcoal broiling is becoming an increasingly popular method for cooking meat. Little scientific work has been done in this area. Information presently available on charcoal broiling consists of broad generalizations which have developed from trial and error testing. With the current interest in charcoal broiling, there is a need for more factual, scientific information as to the proper procedure.

Cooking method affects palatability and nutritive value of meat. Chemical and physical changes occur during the cooking process and the reactions which take place are not fully known or understood. Each cooking method has a specific effect upon meat due to …

The Effect Of Range Condition And Intensity Of Grazing Upon The Daily Intake And Nutritive Value Of The Diet Of Sheep On Summer Ranges Of Northern Utah, Merwyn Mortimer Kothmann May 1963

The Effect Of Range Condition And Intensity Of Grazing Upon The Daily Intake And Nutritive Value Of The Diet Of Sheep On Summer Ranges Of Northern Utah, Merwyn Mortimer Kothmann

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mountainous ranges of the West are commonly used during the summer and have been used in this manner since the settlement of white men over a century ago. Many of these ranges have been mis-managed and are in poor condition. The productivity of these ranges greatly affects the economy of the nation; thus, if ranges in poor condition have a nutritive value lower than ranges in good condition, it results in an economic loss. little work has been done to determine the nutritive value of mountainous summer ranges in good condition compared to similar ranges in poor condition.

Farmers' Reactions Toward Upland Bird Hunting In Two Utah Counties, 1957, Frank J. Calkins May 1963

Farmers' Reactions Toward Upland Bird Hunting In Two Utah Counties, 1957, Frank J. Calkins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Proof that public hunting on private lands is a growing Utah problem is, perhaps, most easily found by driving down any country lane. “No Trespassing" signs come one to a fence post or so it must seem to the pheasant hunter. His quarry is the most popular of Utah's farm game species and, unfortunately, the most popular subject of farmer-sportsmen disputes.

Reasoning that short seasons reduce hunter nuisances and property damage, landowners have long advocated three- to five-day pheasant seasons. And because of this and a former game department concern about overshooting the birds (Utah Fish and Game Commission, 1946) …

Factors Influencing The Quality And Palatability Of Venison In Utah, Flora H. Bardwell

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Outdoor recreational activities dealing with the pursuit of game is exceedingly popular today and its popularity is increasing each year. Annually over 180,000 hunters go afield in Utah in search of deer. There is harvested in the state over 12,000,000 pounds of dressed venison from Utah deer herds each fall. These hunters contribute 10.5 million dollars to the economy of the state for licenses, lodging, transportation and other expense of hunting.

Deer hunting is often done by the amateur, who with little or no experience has few or improper tools or information for dressing and caring for his game, and …

Leaf Ribonuclease Activity As Related To Virus Infection, And Ribonucleic Acid Concentration, Andrew Chien-Yau Hsu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) appears to be the entity responsible for infectivity and genetic continuity in certain plant, animal and bacterial viruses. RNA also plays an important role in protein synthesis. The enzymes which are involved in RNA synthesis and degradation have received much attention. Among these enzymes ribonuclease (RNase) has been most thoroughly studied Rnase is widely distributed and has been isolated from many sources such as snake venom, bacteria, the pancreas, and many plant and animal tissues. Most studies with RNase have been concerned with its role in the hydrolysis of RNA in vitro. Therefore, it has generally been …

Biosynthesis Of Infectious Cucumber Mosaic Virus Ribonucleic Acid In A Cell-Free Medium, Men Hui Lee May 1963

Biosynthesis Of Infectious Cucumber Mosaic Virus Ribonucleic Acid In A Cell-Free Medium, Men Hui Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mechanism of biosynthesis of the nucleic acids, RNA, remained obscure until 1955 when the announcement was made (14) that an enzyme isolated from bacterial sources catalyzes the synthesis of ribopolynucleotides from nucleoside-5'-diphosphates. It has been shown that the biosynthesis of polynucleotides occurs through the stepwise polymerization of nucleoside-5'-diphosphates or triphosphates. A great deal of research over the past few years has indicated that isolated nuclei from both animal (1) and plant (19) sources are able to synthesize ribonucleic acids in vitro (18).

Effects Of Beaver On Stream Flow And Water Quality, James W. Bates May 1963

Effects Of Beaver On Stream Flow And Water Quality, James W. Bates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water, one of the major resources of the western lands, controls the economy and expansion of the communities. Industry, agriculture, timber, livestock, game and home water needs are all dependent upon a steady and continued flow of water from wells, springs, and rivers. Water is derived from one source, precipitation, which occurs in the form of rain and snow. Watersheds which are properly managed accumulate a substantial snow pack during the winter which is the life-giving source of water for our springs.

The Utah Water and Power Report (1948) indicates the annual precipitation over the entire state of Utah averaged …

A Study Of The Effects Of Mastitic Milk On The Quality And Yield Of Cheese, Clayton Shirl Huber May 1963

A Study Of The Effects Of Mastitic Milk On The Quality And Yield Of Cheese, Clayton Shirl Huber

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mastitis is found to some degree all over the world where cows are used for milk production. It could be classed as one of the most perplexing problems of milk production in the airy industry. The loss to the producer and the manufacturer is of considerable importance.

Today sub-clinical mastitis is probably the most common form. This type of infection is commonly so mild that it passes without recognition. It will be investigated in this study.

The influence of mastitis on milk composition has not been studied extensively. Very little research has been done on the influence of mastitic milk …

The Effects Of Cooking Temperature And Stage Of Doneness On Some Factors In Broiled Beef, Carmencita Salvosa May 1963

The Effects Of Cooking Temperature And Stage Of Doneness On Some Factors In Broiled Beef, Carmencita Salvosa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Broiling is cooking tender cuts of meat by radiant heat from hot coals, a gas flame, or an electric element. Steaks and chops for broiling are from 1 to 2 inches thick.

Broiling as a method of cooking mat is not new, but the directions for the process are the result of individual trial and error testing and are often in conflict. Current interest in indoor and outdoor broiling, particularly in Western United States, emphasizes the need for better information. There is no measuring device for surface heat during broiling and thus little research on the relationship of surface temperature, …

A Study Of The Manufacture Of Frozen Desserts From Dry Ingredients, Shihadeh H. Dajani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many parts of the world where milk production is limited, there is an opportunity to process dairy foods from imported concentrated milk products. Dry ingredients can be shipped conveniently and some can be stored several months generally without deterioration. In these milk deficient areas, dried ingredients of good quality and with proper processing should increase the use and consumption of dairy products.

A large supply of high quality milk by-products which are fit for human consumption are available in the world today.

Many investigators and manufacturers have used dried milk by-products as a source of milk solids in frozen …

Effect Of Forage Height Upon The Microtemperature Of A Grass-Legume Pasture And A Comparison Of Forage Composition, Robert E. Warnick May 1963

Effect Of Forage Height Upon The Microtemperature Of A Grass-Legume Pasture And A Comparison Of Forage Composition, Robert E. Warnick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The use of pasture to provide low cost feed for dairy and other farm animals is an important factor in the success of livestock operations.

Some of the factors which influence the income from pasture land are: management, pasture mix, and climate. The management of a pasture can determine to a great extent the value of pasture in a farming enterprise. Irrigating the pasture at the right time, using the right fertilizer, and proper methods of harvesting are examples of some of the management problems facing the grassland farmer.

The Respiratory Chain Involved In Oxidative Phosphorylation On Higher Plants In Relation To Carbon Dioxide-Bicarbonate Inhibition, Wan-Jean Young May 1963

The Respiratory Chain Involved In Oxidative Phosphorylation On Higher Plants In Relation To Carbon Dioxide-Bicarbonate Inhibition, Wan-Jean Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Increased concentrations of CO2 with the accompanying high bicarbonate level in the culture medium have been reported to have a depressing effect in certain plant species on growth (34), respiration (23, 33), oxidative phosphorylation (9), mineral nutrient absorption (17), certain enzymatic reactions (4, 22, 27), accumulation of organic and amino acids (11), and protein synthesis (16). Since accumulation of organic acids occurs in lime-induced chlorotic tissue together with a depression in the respiration of plant tissue, an effect on the energy transfer mechanism of such plants is suspected. Inhibition of electron transfer from the substrate level could result in …

Infrared Spectroscopy As Applied To The Study Of Biochemical Changes Induced By Tobacco Mosaic Virus In Leaf Cells, Banavara Krishnappa Chandrasekhar May 1963

Infrared Spectroscopy As Applied To The Study Of Biochemical Changes Induced By Tobacco Mosaic Virus In Leaf Cells, Banavara Krishnappa Chandrasekhar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The biochemical reactions occurring during the early stages in the infection cycle of a plant virus are still unknown. Many studies involving bacteriophage and animal viruses that have been made in recent years have provided evidence of the nature of virus infection, but these have not been of much value in understanding the nature of plant viruses. Infrared spectroscopy applied to the study of viral infection processes by Chochran and his co-workers (1960, 1962) have given some clues about the nature of biochemical changes taking place in the leaf tissues as a result of infection with cucumber mosaic virus and …

Cost Of Raising Dairy Heifers In Northern Utah, Earnest M. Morrison, J'Wayne Mcarthur Jan 1963

Cost Of Raising Dairy Heifers In Northern Utah, Earnest M. Morrison, J'Wayne Mcarthur

Utah Resources Series

Dairymen have a continuing problem in maintaining herd size. Disease, injuries, and low production, make it necessary for them to cull animals from their herds. Replacements equal to a complete herd turnover are necessary every two to six years. Consequently, many are wondering as to the most profitable practice to supply the needed replacements in the herd. Three alternatives are available: Dairymen can produce herd replacements. They can purchase either heifers or cows. They can contract with growers specializing in raising heifers to provide replacements. Since all dairy enterprises differ to some degree, each dairyman should seek a specific solution …
