Preliminary Indicators Of Income/Wealth Redistribution Associated With Bureau Of Reclamation Projects, Reed Willis, Allen Lebaron, Herbert Fullerton
Preliminary Indicators Of Income/Wealth Redistribution Associated With Bureau Of Reclamation Projects, Reed Willis, Allen Lebaron, Herbert Fullerton
Reports
Social well-being is an accepted subset of water investment feasibility criteria. Our attempt is to isolate income redistribution impacts conferred by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation projects. Four project sites have been utilized to yield both pre and post project estimates of farm income and wealth. Production functions of the Cobb-Douglas type were estimated to yield information about factor shares, and thus enable inferences to be made about distribution of total product. Lorenz curves were developed to show changes in distribution of wealth and net income in terms of family enterprise, per acre, and per irrigated acre. Listing of individual …

Some Behavioral Relationships Between Black-Capped And Mountain Chickadees In An Area Of Year-Around Sympatry, Michael E. Minock
Some Behavioral Relationships Between Black-Capped And Mountain Chickadees In An Area Of Year-Around Sympatry, Michael E. Minock
Biology
Populations of color- marked mountain and black-capped chicakdees were studied at Beaver Mountain Ski Area, Cache County, Utah, an area of year-around sympatry. Aggressive interactions at winter feeding stations were quite frequent, with black-capped chickadees usually dominant over mountain chickadees. However, since mountain chicakdees won a substantial number of contests, an analysis of several factors possibly responsible for these reversals was made. The ones that had the greatest effect were sex of the participants, site of encounters in relation to black-cap winter ranges, and individual differences in birds. Other factors that seemed to have an effect, but less certainly so, …
Laboratory Studies Of Two Species Of Jackrabbit Bot Flies, Craig R. Baird
Laboratory Studies Of Two Species Of Jackrabbit Bot Flies, Craig R. Baird
Biology
The life history and host and site specificity of Cuterebra jellisoni Curran and Cuterebra ruficrus Austen were studied under laboratory conditions. Adult flies of each species were induced to mate. C. jellisoni eggs required seven to eight days for incubation, and C. ruficrus required nine to ten days. First instar larvae were successfully introduced into lagomorph hosts via all natural openings. Regardless of the introduction site, however, each species of larva was later found in a specific terminal site. C. jellisoni larvae completed development in jackrabbit hosts in 36 days and were found in subcutaneous cysts on the head. C. …
The Physiological Role Of The Pineal Body With Respect To Testicular Function In The House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Delon W. Barfuss
The Physiological Role Of The Pineal Body With Respect To Testicular Function In The House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Delon W. Barfuss
Biology
Pineal hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase (HIOMT) activity of the House Sparrow was found to have an annual cycle. During seasons of reproductive activity, HIOMT activity was minimal in contrast to the increased HIOMT activity that occurred during the seasons of reproductive quiescence. The lag in response between increase in testes weight and change in pineal HIOMT activity and the fact that testes can increase in weight with an increase of pineal HIOMT activity suggests that the annual cycling of HIOMT activity and melatonin synthesis by the pineal gland is not responsible for the annual cycles in reproduction of the House Sparrow. However, …
Development Of Eimeria Ninakohlyakimovae From Sheep In Cell Cultures, Gary L. Kelley
Development Of Eimeria Ninakohlyakimovae From Sheep In Cell Cultures, Gary L. Kelley
Biology
Monolayer cell line cultures of ovine trachea, thyroid, thymus, and kidney cells, as well as an established cell line (Madin-Darby) of bovine kidney cells, were inoculated with sporozoites of Eimeria ninakohlyakimovae and observed for a maximum of 24 days. Sporozoites were observed penetrating cells within 5 minutes after inoculation, as well as 2 and 3 days after inoculation, and leaving cells 3 days after inoculation. Transformation from sporozoites to trophozoites occurred by a widening or by a lateral outpocketing of the sporozoite body. Trophozoites and schizonts were first seen 3 days after inoculation in all ovine cell types. Large numbers …
The Development Of Selected Vocalization Of The Hand-Reared Black-Capped Chickadees, Vivian Telford Anderson
The Development Of Selected Vocalization Of The Hand-Reared Black-Capped Chickadees, Vivian Telford Anderson
Biology
The development of selected vocalizations of hand-reared Black-Capped Chickadees (Parus atricapillus) was described and compared to the ontongeny of vocal signals of wild-reared juveniles. The adultlike vocalizations given by laboratory-reared juveniles, six weeks after hatching, were similar to the vocalizations of adults reared in the wild. The chickadee-dee, contact-flight, and the fright calls all appear to be derived from the begging call given by the nestlings. Songs may be derived from the chickadee-dee call precursor, however.
Evaluation Of Molting Areas Of Great Basin Canada Geese, Paul D. Arneson
Evaluation Of Molting Areas Of Great Basin Canada Geese, Paul D. Arneson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Environmental factors at Neponset and Woodruff Narrows reservoirs were evaluated to determine their effects on molting Canada geese. More geese utilized Woodruff Narrows. Geese apparently favored the larger expanse of open water and adequate food supply.
Most of the molting geese were from the Bear River drainage. Some geese came from scattered areas in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. After molting, the geese flew to migration staging areas in southeastern Idaho before migrating to wintering areas in southern California and Arizona.
Females outnumbered males by 6 percent. The mean annual mortality rate for adult geese was 42 percent. Recovery rates …
The Effects Of Formaldehyde On The Frequency Of Reversion Of The White-Ivory Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Ruth Ellen D. Wood
The Effects Of Formaldehyde On The Frequency Of Reversion Of The White-Ivory Mutant Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Ruth Ellen D. Wood
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study is an analysis of the effects of formaldehyde, a chemical which is both recombinogenic and mutagenic, on white-ivory (wi) a highly mutable allele of the white locus of Drosophila. Formaldehyde is shown to significantly increase the reversion frequency of wi. The results of this investigation differ from earlier observations in three respects: (1) there is a positive correlation between RNA (ribonucleic acid) concentration and reversion frequency in the presence of formaldehyde, but reversion does not appear to be totally RNA dependent; (2) female germ cells are more sensitive than those of the male; …
An Application Of Statistical Decision Theory To Farm Management In Sevier County, Utah, Suwaphot Lakawathana
An Application Of Statistical Decision Theory To Farm Management In Sevier County, Utah, Suwaphot Lakawathana
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The major purpose of this study is to present selected empirical results of a study employing decision-making theory as a framework for considering decision making under risk. The particular problem involves choices between alternative crop rotations for Sevier County farmers. The study demonstrates the usefulness of the Bayesian theory that gives more than a point estimation.
A multiple regression model using two linear terms was employed to determine the influence of snow pack and reservoir storage on water availability for irrigation purposes during July, August, and September.
The Bayesian approach was employed. The optimal action or decision was first determined …
Measurement Of The Perceptual Rotation Of Visual Stimuli, Floyd W. Stettler
Measurement Of The Perceptual Rotation Of Visual Stimuli, Floyd W. Stettler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Apparatus for study of the phenomenon of rotation consisted of two rotating turntables constructed to receive disks for presenting varied visual stimuli. Turntables were graduated into 360 degrees for measurement of angular discrepancy in the task of visually matching rotational positions. Subjects from ages four through eleven attempted to match six compass positions for each of three designs--a boxlike house, a straight line, and Bender-Gestalt Figure No. 3.
Errors of rotation were classed as either transpositional or nontranspositional, Transpositional error, involving reversal or mirroring of the directional aspect of the designs, largely disappeared by age six. Non-transpositional error declined rapidly …
Factors Associated With Deviant Behavior At Intermountain School, Sonya Nesch Minock
Factors Associated With Deviant Behavior At Intermountain School, Sonya Nesch Minock
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The types and frequency of deviance, and the relationship between deviance and factors in the pre-Intermountain, Intermountain, and post-Intermountain experiences were studied using the male population of the 1964 graduating class at Intermountain School, Brigham City, Utah.
Among the important findings are the following. Of 233 total deviant acts, 84 were time schedule violations and 66 were drinking and drinking-related violations. The quantitative pattern of deviance was about the same during the sophomore and junior years and then decreased during the senior year. There was an inverse relationship between family size and deviance. The lowest average deviance rate occurred among …
An Economic Evaluation Of The Product Sugar With Special Emphasis On The Abnormal Sugar Market Of 1963-1964, Merlin J. Olsen
An Economic Evaluation Of The Product Sugar With Special Emphasis On The Abnormal Sugar Market Of 1963-1964, Merlin J. Olsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The product sugar is studied in detail with special emphasis on supply and demand factors, in an attempt to better understand the abnormal sugar market of 1963-1964.
The unusual market fluctuations of that period appear to have been initiated by a statistical imbalance in world supply and demand of sugar.
The extent of price fluctuations in the United States during 1963-1964 were accentuated by the inability of current sugar legislation to shield the U. S. market from the world market, and by the openly aggressive purchasing policies followed by the U. S. Department of Agriculture which further aggravated an already …
Effects Of A Systematic-Motor Reinforcement Experience On Alphabet Letter Discrimination Tasks By Preschool Children, Jean Wilson
Effects Of A Systematic-Motor Reinforcement Experience On Alphabet Letter Discrimination Tasks By Preschool Children, Jean Wilson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to determine if an experimental group of children would make significant improvements in their ability to discriminate and order alphabet letters after a systematic reinforcement program of sensorimotor experiences with letters.
The study involved tactual manipulation in learning the discrimination of, the order of, and the position of the alphabet letters in the child's own name.
The hypotheses were made:
l. There will be a significant difference between the experimental population and the control population with respect to the ability to order and place in sequence the letters in each child's name, after the …
Effects Of Sublethal, Cerebral X-Irradiation On Movement And Home-Range Patterns Of Black-Tailed Jackrabbits, Lewis Nelson Jr.
Effects Of Sublethal, Cerebral X-Irradiation On Movement And Home-Range Patterns Of Black-Tailed Jackrabbits, Lewis Nelson Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Effects of sublethal, cerebral irradiation on movement and home-range patterns of black-tailed jackrabbits were studied in Curlew Valley, Utah, using radio-telemetry. Irradiation of 70 captive animals indicated that the LD50(30) was between 5,556 and 6,200 roentgens.
Nine wild, free-living experimentals were trapped in desert terrain, irradiated, transmittered, and released at the capture sites. Seven wild controls were treated similarly but were not irradiated. The field-irradiation dosage was 5,000 roentgens.
Tracking accuracy was determined by telemetering transmitters at fixed locations. Mean hourly movement was measured within 20-30 percent error and home ranges were measured with an error of less than …

The Ontogeny Of Social Behavior Of Uinta Ground Squirrels, D. Andrew Saunders
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The social behavior of juvenile Uinta ground squirrels (Spermophilus armatus) was studied for 2 1/2 years in northeastern Utah. The purpose of the study was to describe the developing social behavior of unconfined, marked squirrels. Their behavior was recorded with motion pictures and written descriptions from the time they emerged from the natal burrow until they entered hibernation.
Three phases of behavioral development were apparent. The first phase began when the juveniles appeared above ground and ended 5 weeks later. This was a period of socialization and consisted of behavioral patterns best described as play. The second phase …
An Economic Analysis Of The Predator Problem In The Range-Sheep Industry In Utah, David Murray Curle
An Economic Analysis Of The Predator Problem In The Range-Sheep Industry In Utah, David Murray Curle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The economic effects, to the Utah range-sheep operation and to the economy of the state of Utah, of predation upon sheep were studied by use of a personal interview survey. This survey sampled 20 percent of the range-sheep operations in Utah.
The sheep and lamb death loss from predation was found to be 61.0 sheep and lambs per 1,000 head of ewes in fiscal 1969. The survey. also showed that 71.36 percent of the losses were lambs and 28.64 percent were ewes.
The total economic loss to Utah sheep ranchers was calculated to be 1,062,502 dollars as a result of …
