Grazing On National Forest System Lands: Cost Of Increasing Capacity In The Northern Region, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

Sample grazing allotments on Ranger Districts in the Northern Region (USDA Forest Service) were surveyed by questionaire to determine the feasibility of increasing grazing capacity through additional range improvements. The survey included an inventory of existing grazing capacity and the specific kind and cost of proposed improvements. Costs of improvements were amortized and aggregated for each Forest Service Planning Area. The resulting costs were compared with the increased grazing capacity measured in animal unit months (AUM) to determine the cost per additional unit of capacity.

Evaluation Of The Long Term Effects Of Irrigation With Wastewater, James H. Reynolds, M. O. Braun, W. F. Campbell, R. W. Miller, L. R. Anderson

Reports

Introduction: Background: The application of municipal wastewater to the land or using the soil mantle as a wastewater treatment system has been practiced for many years. The history of land application dates back to ancient Athens. Sewage farming or the transportation of wastewater to rural areas for irrigation and disposal was practiced in Eurpose as early as 1559. The practice became fairly widespread in England, France, Germany, Poland, Austria, and the United States during the late 1800's [

Development Of An Erosion Model And Its Application To Phosphate Mine Dumps In Southeastern Idaho, Vinod Prabhakar, Roland W. Jeppson, Loren R. Anderson

Reports

Based on the equations of continuity and motion for sediment transport and the dynamic equation of spatially varied open channel flow, a computer simulation of erosion is developed. The water source for the erosion simulation may be rainfall or snowmelt. To provide snowmelt a computer simulation giving the rate of snowmelt from limited climatic data has been adapted to work conjunctively with the erosion model to provide a dynamic solution to erosion and overland flow, from precipitation and other limited climatic data. The computer simulation model has been tested using climatic data at and near the phosphate mine in Southeastern …

Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan Jan 1978

Factor Analysis Method, Stephen Hauwah Kan

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The logical steps performed when doing a factor analysis can be classified into three operation s. The first step concerns the exact mode of analysis and involves the type of centering, scaling and formation o f sums of squares . The second step involves extraction of initial factors. The algebraic basis of the factors are rotated in the last step to obtain a more easily interpreted set of factors. At each step several different methods have been suggested and appear in the literature. Two primary modes of factor analysis are commonly used an d they are denoted as R-mode and …

Introduction: The 1976 edition of "Methods of Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes" describes chemical analytical procedures to be sued in Water Quality Office (WQO) laboratoires. The methods were chose through the combined efforts of the Regional Analytical Quality Control (AQC) Coordinators, Laboratory Quality Control Officers, and other senior chemicsts in both federal and state laboratories. Method selection was based on the following criteria: 1. The method should measure the desired constitutent with precision and accuracy suffiecient to meet the data needs of WQO in the presence of the interferences normally encountered in polluted waters. 2. The procedures should utilize …

Mathematical Equations Describing Chick Performance And Carcass Composition As A Function Of Diet Protein And Energy Levels, Naiyana Nakhata Jan 1978

Mathematical Equations Describing Chick Performance And Carcass Composition As A Function Of Diet Protein And Energy Levels, Naiyana Nakhata

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Previous work at Utah State University determined minimum levels of different nutrients that would produce the maximum rate of gain or gain/feed ratio by feeding graded levels of the nutrients. Fitting broken lines to the data from work with one nutrient tended to underestimate the minimum requirement for that nutrient. It appeared that the response was not linear up to the level required to give maximum performance as the "broken line" approach to estimating the requirement assumes. It seemed worthwhile to try to describe the relation between ration level of a nutrient and chick performance by means of a mathematical …

Rural And Regional Economic Aspects Of Livestock And Wildlife/ Fisheries Use Of Rangelands In The West, Darwin B. Nielsen, E. Bruce Godfrey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Western rangelands, both public and private, are important sources of forage for domestic livestock and grazing wildlife. In addition, the actions of both groups of animals have an impact on nongrazing wildlife and fish. Common use of the range resources by all these animals is the normal pattern. Over time, all of these uses have meshed together in some mix that has been influenced by biological forces as well as by the changing demands of man. In recent years, increasing demands by man for almost all uses of the range lands of the West has made the allocation of resources …

Some Effects Of Different Temperatures On The Development Of The Black Grass Bug (Labops Hesperius Uhler) From The Egg Through The Adult Stage, Osiris L. Paraqueima

Biology

A study of some effects of different temperatures on the development of the black grass bug (Labops hesperius Uhler) was conducted in the laboratory and the results compared with the insect's development in the field. The purpose of this study was to develop a method of rearing grass bugs in the laboratory so research with these insects could be conducted all year, and to formulate a growing degree hour model that might help predict hatching and development of the bugs in the laboratory and field, and be a guide in timing proper control measures in the field. L. hesperius were …

Some Intermountain Endemics, Arthur H. Holmgren

Faculty Honor Lectures

A growing concern for the welfare of endangered or threatened plant and animal species has developed during the past few years, coinciding with an awareness of mankind's deleterious influence on the environment. Technological man has altered vast areas of the earth's surface to such an extent that many species have been endangered or made extinct. Transcontinental highways, shopping malls, industrial parks, home sites where they shouldn't be, and huge acreages turned over by the plow for monocultures, have taken a toll on our native vegetation to such an extent that many species have either lost their diversity or have disappeared. …

The Arid Lands Revisited, 100 Years After John Wesley Powell, Thadis W. Box

Faculty Honor Lectures

presented his Report on the Arid Lands of the United States with a More Detailed Account of the Lands of Utah to Secretary of the Interior Carl Schurz. The report was not so much a careful scientific report, but a distillation of Powell's experiences in the arid regions and a compilation of his recommendations. The paper "was less a report than a program - even, some western congressmen would begin to say, a manifesto, a revolution" (Stegner 1962). Stegner wrote:

It would ultimately be recognized as one of the most important books ever written about the West, and it was …

Inhibition Of Hydroxyindole-0-Methyl Transferase Activity By Guanosine 3' ,5'-Cyclic Phosphate In Rat, Sparrow, And Bovine Pineal Glands, Kenneth Stafford Snow May 1977

Inhibition Of Hydroxyindole-0-Methyl Transferase Activity By Guanosine 3' ,5'-Cyclic Phosphate In Rat, Sparrow, And Bovine Pineal Glands, Kenneth Stafford Snow

Biology

The purpose of the research was to ascertain the effect of guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate on hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity in laboratory female rats, a free-living population of male and female house sparrows, and bovine pineal glands obtained from the abbatoir, in vitro. The data showed that guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate significantly inhibited hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity in all three species, but the bovine pineal preparation was the least sensitive. From these data, it appears that guanosine 3' ,5'-cyclic monophosphate acts as a second messenger to the neurotransmitter norepinephrine for the control of hydroxyindole-0-methyl transferase activity as follows: Darkness effects the release …

Effect Of Arginine Vasotocin On Testosterone Metabolism By Rat Liver In Vitro, Paul R. Findell May 1977

Effect Of Arginine Vasotocin On Testosterone Metabolism By Rat Liver In Vitro, Paul R. Findell

Biology

UDPGA fortified rat liver homogenates were incubated with various concentrations of the pineal polypeptide, arginine vasotocin (AVT), and testosterone-4-14C to determine if AVT influenced the rate at which the ∆4-3-ketosteroid molecule was inactivated by the liver. In order to ascertain where in the inactivation mechanism AVT exerts its effect: 1) Mitochondria-free rat liver homogenates fortified with NADPH and various concentrations of AVT were incubated with testosterone as the substrate to determine if AVT influenced ∆4-reductase activity, and 2) rat liver microsomal preparations fortified with UDPGA and various concentrations of AVT were incubated with androsterone-7α-3H as the substrate to determine if …

An Experimental Investigation Of Some Aspects Of The Tendency To Be Social In The House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), John R. Watson May 1977

An Experimental Investigation Of Some Aspects Of The Tendency To Be Social In The House Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), John R. Watson

Biology

The purpose of this investigation was to examine different aspects of the social tendency among three age classes of House Sparrows (adults, first-year, and juvenals). The social preferences of these birds were studied in relation to: (1) different flock sizes of conspecifics and nonconspecifics; (2) the sexes of conspecifics; (3) the playback of conspecific vocalizations in the presence of flocks of conspecifics; and (4) abstract models displaying configurations considered relevant from House Sparrow plumage patterns of either sex. This investigation was undertaken at the Green Canyon Ecology Station, Logan, Utah from June 1968 to May 1969. These experiments were carried …

Soybean Mitochondrial Membrane Configuration Associated With Respiratory State And The Effect Of Inorganic Fluoride, Richard William Nunes May 1977

Soybean Mitochondrial Membrane Configuration Associated With Respiratory State And The Effect Of Inorganic Fluoride, Richard William Nunes

Biology

Oxidative respiration and morphological changes in soybean mitochondria isolated from etiolated hypocotyls were investigated, Aliquots from mitochondria in defined respiratory states were negatively stained with isotonic aqueous ammonium molybdate, pH 7.2. Similar experiments were conducted with mitochondria incubated for three minutes in an assay medium containing either 1.5, 3.0 or 6.0 x 10-2 M KCl or KF prior to the addition of either L-malate or succinate. Neither KCl nor KF affected the biochemical integrity of mitochondria judged on their ability to reduce both ADP/0 and respiratory control ratios, even though KF had a definite inhibitory effect on the rate of …
