Evaluation Of Areas For Off-Road Recreational Motorcycle Use, Volume I: Evaluation Method, United States Army Corps Of Engineers

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

To answer user demands for more areas on which to operate off-road recreational motocycles (trailbikes), and to respond to Presidential Executive Orders which require that Federally-owned lands be evaluated for such use, Army land managers need a systematic way of determining land use suitability. This report describes the method developed by the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) to help installation personnel comply with the policies, procedures, and criteria of Army Regulation (AR) 210-9, Use of Off-Road Vehicles on Army Lands.

Nongame Birds Of The Rocky Mountain Spruce- Fir Forests And Their Management, Kimberly G. Smith Jan 1980

Nongame Birds Of The Rocky Mountain Spruce- Fir Forests And Their Management, Kimberly G. Smith

T.W. "Doc" Daniel Experimental Forest

Spruce-fir forests in the Rocky Mountains consist mainly of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. The breeding avifaunas in these forests show remarkable consistency in composition along a latitudinal gradient from Montana to Arizona and New Mexico, and with avian communities in the Hudsonian life zone in Washington, Oregon, and California. Woodpeckers, corvids, and seed-eating finches are the most common components. Only the Golden Eagle and a few other raptors are threatened or endangered. Few species winter in these high mountain forests. The distribution of many species is controlled primarily by the vegetation physiognomy, a variable under the control of the …

The Relationship Of Food Conversion Efficiency And Growth Potential In Juvenile Mosquitofish, Gambusia Affinis, Joseph J. Cech Jr., Michael J. Massingill, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Jan 1980

The Relationship Of Food Conversion Efficiency And Growth Potential In Juvenile Mosquitofish, Gambusia Affinis, Joseph J. Cech Jr., Michael J. Massingill, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

New information concerning respiratory metabolic rates of juvenile mosquitofish (i = 915 mg 02 kg-1 h-1 at 20° C) was applied to existing data on mosquitofish respiration and combined with findings on growth and food consumption rates to determine percentages of net ingested energy used for growth and respiration over a 10- 35° C temperature range. The energy percentage used by mosquitofish for respiration was minimized at 25-30° C while that used for growth (= food conversion efficiency) was maximized at the same temperature. A calculated growth potential index, derived from an overall energy balance equation, was also maximized at …

Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney Jan 1980

Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney

Reports

A mathematical model was developed to predict the impact of dairy and beef cattle feedlot runoff on receiving streams. The mathematical expressions used in the model describing runoff quantity and quality were not only a function of single rain or snow precipitation events but also consecutive events prior to the runoff occurrence. The runoff quantity and quality were also a function of feedlot surface. Computer simualtions indicate that pollutants from feedlot runoff may have a significant impact on receiving streams during winter months. Runoff from feedlots located within the study area, however, had little impact on water quality in the …

A Framework For Risk Analysis Of Earth Dams, Jon C. Howell, Loren R. Anderson, David S. Bowles, Ronald V. Canfield

Reports

This purpose of this thesis is to present in a logical and straightforward manner, the types of probabilistic, deterministic and judgment methods which should be part f a risk analysis process for earth dam planning, design, construction and operation. In doing this, an attempt was made to include all of the elements (components of the risk analysis procedure defined herein) which were considered to be important. Descriptions of these elements as well as how they are used to estimate probabilities for the occurrence of each of three failure conditions (i.e. no failure, partial failure, complete failure) are also presented. Explanations …

Alteration Of Microbial Populations In Surface Mine Revegetation And Their Effects On Nitrogen Cycling, Margaret Mary Mccarthy Jan 1980

Alteration Of Microbial Populations In Surface Mine Revegetation And Their Effects On Nitrogen Cycling, Margaret Mary Mccarthy

Reports

Surface mining in the arid west results in soil disruption by alterning structure, water-holding capacity and nutrient availability. Intensive revegetation efforts may end in marginal rehabilitation due to adverse chamical and physical properties of the distrubed soil. Monitoring microbial activitiy and soil chemistry of revegetated and undisturbed areas of a surface mine in Southeastern Montana enabled delineation of major factors participating in soil fertility were determined. In the undisturbed site, the upper few centimeters of the soil profile contained most of the nutrients and the microbial populations. In the revegetated sites, due to mixing of various soil horizons, the concentration …

The Development Of Agricultural Policy And Patterns Of Land Settlement In The State Of Israel (1882 - 1967), Sandra L. Goodman Jan 1980

The Development Of Agricultural Policy And Patterns Of Land Settlement In The State Of Israel (1882 - 1967), Sandra L. Goodman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

On May 15, 1948, the state of Israel came into existence in accordance with the United Nation's Palestinian partition resolution of November, 1947. After two thousand years of Jewish exile and diaspora, the world had recognized and granted the Jews the right to claim their Biblical homeland. Establishment of the state by no means signified the beginning of Jewish presence in this Middle Eastern corner of the world since the time of their exile in 70 AD. Since the first modern major wave of Jewish immigration into Palestine in the 1880s, national identity had been the goal of idealistic pioneers, …

Design Of A Cost Effective Solar Powered Water Pump, Duane G. Chadwick Jan 1980

Design Of A Cost Effective Solar Powered Water Pump, Duane G. Chadwick

Reports

The design and performance of a vacuum lift, solar powered water pump is discussed. The basic design consists of an expanding gaseous piston confined inside a chamber which is located in series with, and between an inlet and an outlet check value. The gas is generated by volatilizing cyclopentane or hexane. Four variations of this basic design concept were built and evaluated. The various features of each are discussed. Considerations in the choice of a cost-effective solar collector are also reviewed. Several of the more promising types of solar collectors were built and evaluated for use on the pump. A …

Vulnerability Of Water Supply Systems To Droughts, David S. Bowles, Trevor C. Hughes, W. Robert James, Donald T. Jensen, Frank W. Haws Jan 1980

Vulnerability Of Water Supply Systems To Droughts, David S. Bowles, Trevor C. Hughes, W. Robert James, Donald T. Jensen, Frank W. Haws

Reports

This summary completion report describes the project work completed in three areas: 1) the development and preliminary testing of drought severity and vulnerability indices, 2) the impacts of Utah's 1977 drought, and 3) an operation comparison of stochastic streamflow models. The drought indices were evaluated for three municipal and three irrigation water supply systems in Utah. It was concluded that a continuous loss function to define the effects of water shortage would be more appropriate than the existing assumption that drought-related lossed occur suddenly at a certain degree of water shortage. Information on the impacts of Utah's 1977 drought was …

Labops Hesperius Uhler: Abundance And Dispersal In Relation To Vegetation, Kenneth R. Ostlie May 1979

Labops Hesperius Uhler: Abundance And Dispersal In Relation To Vegetation, Kenneth R. Ostlie

Biology

Labops hesperius Uhler abundance and ground dispersal in relation to vegetation were studied on three semiarid range sites in central Utah during 1977 and 1978. The objectives of this study were to: 1) verify quantitatively a common observation that L. hesperius populations reach infestation levels within reseeded range but not within native or unimproved range; 2) investigate activity levels of potential arthropod predators to determine if predation might account for the observed differences in L. hesperius abundance; and 3) examine the role which various vegetation components play in shaping this distribution of L. hesperius. Sampling with a modified "D-Vac" technique …

Evaluation Of Semen And Techniques Of Massage For Eliciting Semen From Captive Avian Species, Joseph Alan Russin May 1979

Evaluation Of Semen And Techniques Of Massage For Eliciting Semen From Captive Avian Species, Joseph Alan Russin

Biology

Individuals representing twelve species of birds were selected from the San Diego Zoo's avian collection to investigate optimal semen collection techniques and semen quality. Each bird was manually massaged to elicit ejaculation twice a week over a two month period. During massage, the state of cloacal excitement was evaluated by scoring the characteristics of protrusion, tissue hardness and color, and twitch, on a scale of one to five (one being the least excited state). The most successful method of massaging the bird was found to be a technique used to collect semen in domestic poultry, with slight modifications for each …

The Effect Of Photoperiod And Temperature On Testicular Growth In Captive Black-Billed Magpies, Lee R. Jones May 1979

The Effect Of Photoperiod And Temperature On Testicular Growth In Captive Black-Billed Magpies, Lee R. Jones

Biology

1. Photoperiods of 12 or 15 hr duration stimulate testicular growth in captive black-billed magpies (Pica pica hudsonia) at both 2 and 20°C; 9-hr photoperiods do not initiate growth at 20°C. 2. Cold temperatures (2°C) inhibit testicular development at 12-hr photoperiods; a slight inhibition occurs at 15-hr photo-periods. The inhibitory effect of cold temperatures on testicular growth in magpies at 12-hr photoperiods is greater than in any species similarly investigated. 3. An estimate of the effect of cold temperature on vernal testicular growth in wild magpies is calculated, and the adaptive value of temperature modulation of photoperiodically induced testicular growth …

The Effects Of High Temperature And Low Relative Humidity On Survival Of Nondiapausing Pupae Of Bathyplectes Circulionis, Nazar Nowman Hama May 1979

The Effects Of High Temperature And Low Relative Humidity On Survival Of Nondiapausing Pupae Of Bathyplectes Circulionis, Nazar Nowman Hama

Biology

The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of high temperature and low and moderate relative humidity on the survival of 1 to 3-day old nondiapausing pupae of Bathyplectes curculionis (Thomson). Temperature and time, independently and dependently, were significant factors to mortality, but relative humidity was not. No mortality was shown at 25°C and 60 to 70% relative humidity at exposures of 24 h or less. As temperatures were raised above 25°C the initially low mortality increased but in a nonlinear pattern, reaching 100% with high correlation for short exposures at 43°C or higher. At each temperature near …

Observations were made on 12 Spanish goats and 6 dairy goats from a flock in Logan, Utah, from January of 1977 to January of 1978. Estrus was detected visually and by the use of vasectomized teaser bucks. The breeding season for the majority of the goats was from September to February. Some breeding activity was observed in early March and late August. The mean estrous cycle length was 20.32 ± 7.12 days. Progesterone and LH levels were measured in 10 Spanish goats in Utah during the normal estrous cycle. Samples were taken daily through at least one cycle. LH levels …

Pollination Dynamics In Two Subalpine Flower Meadows, Peter Andrew Beedlow Iii May 1979

Pollination Dynamics In Two Subalpine Flower Meadows, Peter Andrew Beedlow Iii

Biology

Plant-pollinator interactions were studied in two subalpine meadows to determine the role of pollination in structuring the herbaceous flower communities. The majority of the entornophilous plant species set significantly less seed when caged to prevent visitation than when exposed to flower visitors. Visitation rate was directly related to temperature and radiation. The number of animal species visiting flowers each week was directly related to the number of plant species in bloom. Most visitor species used ≤3 species of plants, while most plant species hosted ≤8 species of flower visitors. Floral niche breadth increased with increasing animal species diversity, but animal …

The Humoral Immune Response Of Rabbits To Mycoplasma Bovis Immunization, Jay Dee Terry May 1979

The Humoral Immune Response Of Rabbits To Mycoplasma Bovis Immunization, Jay Dee Terry

Biology

Domestic New Zealand white rabbits were immunized using various routes of administration and concentrations of viable Mycoplasma bovis antigen. The humoral antibody response was monitored weekly using the following serological techniques adapted for use with the microtiter titration system: the complement fixation test, the latex agglutination test, and the tetrazolium reduction inhibition test. The growth inhibition test was also utilized. The antibody response was dependent on the route of antigen administration of both the primary and booster immunizations. Primary immunization utilizing Freund's complete adjuvant produced consistently higher initial antibody titers when administered by the foot pad route than either subcutaneous …

The Development Of A Viral Bioassay System To Detect Ribavirin In Human Serum And Urine, Donald Frederick Smee May 1979

The Development Of A Viral Bioassay System To Detect Ribavirin In Human Serum And Urine, Donald Frederick Smee

Biology

The minimum viral-inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ribavirin (1-ß-D-ribofuranosy1-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide) was determined in the presence of human serum and urine for use as a bioassay for the drug. Since ribavirin's antiviral activity varies with the cell line and virus used, the sensitivity of four viruses to ribavirin dissolved in Eagle's medium containing serum or urine was evaluated using at least two different cell lines for each virus. The viruses studied included type 3 parainfluenza, type 1 herpes, type 1 reovirus, and measles. To eliminate the viral inhibitory effects of measles anti- body, the serum was filtered through immersible molecular separators (Millipore). Reovirus …
