Où Est Votre Chapeau? Economic Sanctions And Trade Regulation, Michael P. Malloy

This article seeks to determine whether US economic sanctions can be maintained consistently with the obligations of the international trade regime. In Part I, it will consider the extent to which the current prevalence of economic sanctions may create tension with international trading rules. In Part II, the article will assess arguments that sanctions are inconsistent with applicable principles of customary international law. Part III will consider whether sanctions are inconsistent with international trading regimes and consequently are impermissible. East Asian Trade Before/After 1590s Occupation Of Korea: Modeling Imports And Exports In Global Context, Dennis O. Flynn, Marie A. Lee

The purpose of this essay is threefold. First, to highlight research of Seonmin KIM, whose 2006 Ph.D. dissertation elucidates complex relationships among Ming China, Choson Korea, Tokugawa Japan, and mountainous ginsengproducing "borderlands" between Korea and China; her story concludes with the remarkable rise of a borderlands power that overthrew Ming China, thereby establishing dominance that lasted into the 20th century - the Qing Dynasty. A second purpose is to showcase application of a non-standard-model - the Hydraulic Metaphor - that elucidates economic components of Professor KIM's history via visual and intuitive mechanisms designed to be understandable for non-specialists. Nonlinear Dynamic Model-Based Adaptive Control Of A Solenoid-Valve System, Dongbin Lee, C. Nataraj, P. Naseradinmousavi

In this paper, a nonlinear model-based adaptive control approach is proposed for a solenoid-valve system. The challenge is that solenoids and butterfly valves have uncertainties in multiple parameters in the nonlinear model; various kinds of physical appearance such as size and stroke, dynamic parameters including inertia, damping, and torque coefficients, and operational parameters especially, pipe diameters and flow velocities. These uncertainties are making the system not only difficult to adjust to the environment, but also further complicated to develop the appropriate control approach for meeting the system objectives. This panel will focus on the bearing of human rights norms on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in armed conflict situations. The ongoing and rapidly increasing development and deployment of UAVs in situations of armed conflict have arguably outpaced the law in that they are not adequately supported by a dedicated and enforceable regime of international and (trans)national rules, regulations, and standards, including relevant human rights norms.
