Western civilization has been influenced by Indian thought in two ways - one through the Greeks, and the other through modern English scholarship. The former has affected us but slightly, being the result of oral interchange, rather than of immediate literary borrowing, - thus passing only indirectly into our system. The latter is reacting upon English literature today in a manner and to an extent which seems not to have been fully realized by either the East or the West.

As a figure in the American period of California history, Mr. James D. Phelan's achievements were an outstanding example of what an honest man can do in politics. First of all, I have endeavored to show his contributions to the city of San Francisco. There is hardly any field of San Francisco life in which James D. Phelan did not leave a tremendous influence. The politics of his term as mayor were a shining model of clean and progressive measures.

This paper was planned with the object of covering the history and development of air transportation from its incep- tion to the present time. The mythology concerning aviation has been taken up at the beginning and this has been followed by a discussion of the earliest experiments in flying. The activities of the Wright Brothers began about 1900 and in 1909 they sold the Wright Flyer" to the United States Govern- ment. The development of pre-war and wartime airplanes is next taken up.

An eleventh-year group of American history pupils had been placed under my guidance in a nearby High School. Some four or five weeks after undertaking the task of teaching this group, the World War period chronologically made its appearance. Now, it was not my intention to teach the war in terms of battles, victories, territory lost, or territory regained. My all consuming objective was to attempt to create a dislike for war and all its attributes. The treaty to establish a protectorate over Haiti is another step by the United States in the Americanization of the Caribbean area. These extensions have become a fixed policy of the Department of States. The Republicans and Democrats heartily support the United States government in her program of expansion. Protests will continue, but once the United States gets in, she will stay in. Already she has gone far from the position that she occupied when she first went in. The United States has always had a policy of expansion from early colonial period. She has extended control west, south, and …
