Development Of Form And Function In Peripheral Auditory Structures Of The Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Dennis M. Higgs, Audrey K. Rollo, Marcy J. Souza, Arthur N. Popper Nov 2002

Development Of Form And Function In Peripheral Auditory Structures Of The Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Dennis M. Higgs, Audrey K. Rollo, Marcy J. Souza, Arthur N. Popper

Biological Sciences Publications

Investigations of the development of auditory form and function have, with a few exceptions, thus far been largely restricted to birds and mammals, making it difficult to postulate evolutionary hypotheses. Teleost fishes represent useful models for developmental investigations of the auditory system due to their often extensive period of posthatching development and the diversity of auditory specializations in this group. Using the auditory brainstem response and morphological techniques we investigated the development of auditory form and function in zebrafish ~Danio rerio) ranging in size from 10 to 45 mm total length. We found no difference in auditory sensitivity, response latency, …

Gender And Sexuality In Victorian England: An Analysis Of The Autobiography Of Christopher Kirkland, Pauline Phipps Jul 2002

Gender And Sexuality In Victorian England: An Analysis Of The Autobiography Of Christopher Kirkland, Pauline Phipps

History Publications

This paper examines Eliza Lynn Linton's experience as a result of her conflicting sentiments about English Victorian gendered norms. Linton's “male” ambition facilitated her entrance into the male work sphere, yet her writing preached the values of domesticity while denigrating women such as herself, who sought careers. Eliza's gender dilemma was best projected in her autobiographical novel, The Autobiography of Christopher Kirkland (1885). This text, which evokes the ambivalence between her acclamation of femininity and her “mannish” behaviour, indicates the tenuous structure of gender and emotional norms. The “role” Eliza assumes as a male suitor, while suggesting interesting meanings about …

Teaching Culturally And Linguistically-Diverse International Students: Connections Between Promising Teaching Practices And Student Satisfaction, Clayton Smith, George Zhou

Education Publications

This chapter describes three studies that explore promising teaching practices for teaching linguistically and culturally-diverse international students by identifying teaching practices that have high levels of international student satisfaction and student perceptions of learning. The first study, using a mixedmethods approach, found eight teaching practice areas that resonated with students. The second study, using a qualitative approach, identified similarities and dissimilarities between STEM and non-STEM students. The third study, using a qualitative approach, uncovered student preferences for online teaching practices. Recommendations for professional practice are discussed, along with potential areas for further research.

So, How Do People Really Use Their Handheld Devices? An Interactive Study Of Wireless Technology Use, Francine K. Schlosser Jun 2002

So, How Do People Really Use Their Handheld Devices? An Interactive Study Of Wireless Technology Use, Francine K. Schlosser

Odette School of Business Publications

Using a symbolic interactionist methodology, the diverse meanings assigned by employees to wireless handheld technology are investigated. Interviews were conducted with 11 individuals representing three organizations in the public and private sector enhancing our understanding of technology use within an organizational context. Wireless technology practices are examined as they relate to aspects of self-identity, that is, the imaged self, the relational self, the integrated self and the isolated self. Individuals were able to fit the technology into their work and personal roles, and at the same time, adjusted these roles to fit new expectations arising from the technology. Innovative ways …

Extensive Profiling Of A Complex Microbial Community By High-Throughput Sequencing, Janet E. Hill, Robyn P. Seipp, Martin Betts, Lindsay Hawkins, Andrew G. Van Kessel, William L. Crosby, Sean M. Hemmingsen

Biological Sciences Publications

Complex microbial communities remain poorly characterized despite their ubiquity and importance to human and animal health, agriculture, and industry. Attempts to describe microbial communities by either traditional microbiological methods or molecular methods have been limited in both scale and precision. The availability of genomics technologies offers an unprecedented opportunity to conduct more comprehensive characterizations of microbial communities. Here we describe the application of an established molecular diagnostic method based on the chaperonin-60 sequence, in combination with high-throughput sequencing, to the profiling of a microbial community: the pig intestinal microbial community. Four libraries of cloned cpn60 sequences were generated by two …

An Australian Pelican Pelecanus Conspicillatus Benefits From The Beating Behaviour Of A Pied Cormorant Phalacrocorax Varius: A Possible Precursor To Kleptoparasitism, O. P. Love, Christina A.D. Semeniuk

Biological Sciences Publications

Food parasitism on pelican species by many groups of birds, especially Laurus and Sterna spp. is well known and documented. Although the Pelicanidae exhibit many behavioural and ecological traits known to facilitate parasitism, few accounts and studies of this feeding strategy by pelicans are known. The following report describes a series of inshore parasitic bouts by an Australian Pelican Pelecanus conspicillatus on a Pied Cormorant Phalacrocorax varius in Monkey Mia, Shark Bay, Western Australia. The pelican made no attempt to feed prior to the arrival of the cormorant and remained in association with the cormorant for well over a quarter …

Structural Plumage Coloration, Male Body Size, And Condition In The Blue-Black Grassquit, Stéphanie M. Doucet Jan 2002

Structural Plumage Coloration, Male Body Size, And Condition In The Blue-Black Grassquit, Stéphanie M. Doucet

Biological Sciences Publications

In birds, the colors ultraviolet, blue, and green originate from feather microstructure rather than pigmentation. Structural plumage coloration may be maintained by sexual selection, yet there exists only limited evidence that structural colors can honestly signal individual quality. In this study, I found considerable individual variation in the blue-black to ultraviolet coloration of the wing coverts and rump of male Blue-black Grassquits (Volatinia jacarina), thereby revealing the potential for sexual selection on structural plumage coloration in this species. I used a principal components analysis (PCA) of four color characteristics to combine reflectance data into a single color score. Birds with …

Quantum-State Information Retrieval In A Rydberg-Atom Data Register, J. Ahn, Chitra Rangan, D.N. Hutchinson, P.H. Bucksbaum Jan 2002

Quantum-State Information Retrieval In A Rydberg-Atom Data Register, J. Ahn, Chitra Rangan, D.N. Hutchinson, P.H. Bucksbaum

Physics Publications

The connections between the phase retrieval protocol in a Rydberg data register were shown via an impulsive half-cycle pulse and the more general problem of constructing a database-search algorithm. The sensitivity of the phase retrieval to the peak HCP field was explained by multimode interference. By programming the initial wave packet and the HCP, it was possible to create the correct interference conditions to produce any desired energy eigenstates.

Lithium Transition Energies And Isotope Shifts: Qed Recoil Corrections, Z. C. Yan, Gordon W. F. Drake Jan 2002

Lithium Transition Energies And Isotope Shifts: Qed Recoil Corrections, Z. C. Yan, Gordon W. F. Drake

Physics Publications

The quantum electrodynamic recoil correction for lithium in the 22S1/2, 32S1/2 and 22PJ states was evaluated, and its impact on lithium isotope shifts was examined. The nonrelativistic variational wave functions were constructed from fully correlated basis sets in Hylleraas coordinates. Results for the total transition frequencies were shown to be in good agreement with experiment, but there were discrepancies between theory and experiment for isotope shift in the fine structure splitting for 1s22p2P state.

Ground-State Energies For Helium, H-, And Ps-, Gordon W. F. Drake, M. M. Cassar, R. A. Nistor

Physics Publications

Nonrelativistic energy and other properties of He, H- and Ps- were discussed using a triple basis set in Hylleraas coordinates. The stability and efficiency of the computational method was compared with the quasirandom method. Results showed that the triple basis set in Hylleraas coordinates is capable of exceeding the accuracy of calculations for three-body system based on quasirandom Monte Carlo methods.

Cap1 Expression Is Developmentally Regulated In Xenopus, Farhad Khosrowshahian, Andrew V. Hubberstey, Michael J. Crawford Jan 2002

Cap1 Expression Is Developmentally Regulated In Xenopus, Farhad Khosrowshahian, Andrew V. Hubberstey, Michael J. Crawford

Biological Sciences Publications

We have cloned and characterized a Xenopus member of the cyclase associated protein (CAP) gene family. xCAP1 is expressed as a maternal transcript, but is up-regulated prior to gastrulation and subsequently localizes to head mesenchyme, lens, otic vesicle, and trunk mesoderm including the pronephros. At different stages, the gone also appears to differentiate surface from deep (sensorial) ectoderm. As in Drosophila, Xenopus CAP1 is expressed in the developing eye, specifically in the differentiating lens. However, in distinction to Drosophila, Xenopus CAP1 does not express in periodically arrayed neural bands. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Developmental Biology: An Array Of New Possibilities, Adnan Ali, Michael J. Crawford Jan 2002

Developmental Biology: An Array Of New Possibilities, Adnan Ali, Michael J. Crawford

Biological Sciences Publications

Microarrays offer biologists comprehensive and powerful tools to analyze the involvement of genes in developmental processes at an unprecedented scale. Microarrays that employ defined sequences will permit us to elucidate genetic relationships and responses, while those that employ undefined DNA sequences (ESTs, cDNA, or genomic libraries) will help us to discover new genes, relate them to documented gene networks, and examine the way in which genes (and the process that they themselves control) are regulated. With access to broad new avenues of research come strategic and logistical headaches, most of which are embodied in the reams of data that are …

An Interactive Approach Of Assembly Planning, Xiaobu Yuan Jan 2002

An Interactive Approach Of Assembly Planning, Xiaobu Yuan

Computer Science Publications

An interactive approach to assembly planning is presented. It provides a virtual reality interface for production engineers to program the virtual representation of robotic manipulators in a three-dimensional (3D) operation space. The direct human involvement creates a user-defined assembly sequence, which contains the human knowledge of mechanical assembly. By extracting the precedence relationship of machinery parts, for the first time it becomes possible to generate alternative assembly sequences automatically from a single sequence for robot reprogramming. This interactive approach introduces human expertise into assembly planning, thus breaking down the computational complexity of autonomous systems. Experiments and analysis provide strong evidence …

Extensible Information Brokers, Jianguo Lu, John Mylopoulos Jan 2002

Extensible Information Brokers, Jianguo Lu, John Mylopoulos

Computer Science Publications

The number and size of information services available on the internet has been growing exponentially over the past few years. This growth has created an urgent need for information agents that act as brokers in the sense that they can autonomously search, gather, and integrate information on behalf of a user. To remain useful, such brokers will have to evolve throughout their lifetime to keep up with evolving and ever-changing information services. This paper proposes a framework named XIB (eXtensible Information Brokers) for building and evolving information brokers.

The XIB takes as input a description of required information services and …

Dense Matching And Image Segmentation Using Projective Geometry., David John. O'Connell Jan 2002

Dense Matching And Image Segmentation Using Projective Geometry., David John. O'Connell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dense matching and image segmentation are fundamental image analysis operations. These operations are required by many computer vision applications. Artificial view-synthesis, 3D scene reconstruction, token tracking and augmented reality are examples of applications that rely heavily on these primitives. The speed and accuracy of such applications rely on the quality of the matching and segmentation. As a result, solutions to these problems have been widely researched. However, due to the difficulty of these problems, there is no universal solution. Most solutions to these two problems make certain assumptions. First, dense matching and image segmentation are often viewed as separate problems. …

Morphological And Physiological Studies Of The Primary Olfactory Pathway In The Sea Lamprey, Petromyzon Marinus: Spatial Organization Of Discrete Glomerular Subsets And The Development Of Functional Imaging For Monitoring Glomerular Activity., Andrea. Frontini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Olfaction is an extremely important communication modality for most organisms, yet it is probably the sensory system least understood. Recent findings have shed light on some of the basic principles that control olfactory detection and transmission of signals into the central nervous system, but the mechanisms for spatial resolution of odorants within the brain are still poorly understood. In this study we have used histological, immunocytochemical and in vivo optical imaging techniques to investigate the spatial and functional organization of olfactory bulb glomeruli of the developing Agnathan, the sea lamprey, Petromizon marinus. We characterized the glomerular pattern of olfactory sensory …

Morphology And Histochemistry Of The Peripheral Olfactory Organ And Behavioural Responses By The Round Goby, Neogobius Melanostomus , To Putative Pheromones And Conspecific Extracts., Rachelle Marie. Belanger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study links the anatomy of the peripheral olfactory organ in the bottom-dwelling round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) with behavioural responses to putative pheromones and conspecific extracts. The spatial organization of the nasal cavity was examined using impression material injection, immunocytochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy. The peripheral olfactory organ had a compact structure with an olfactory chamber that contained a single longitudinal lamella. Prominent dorsocaudal lachrymal and ethmoid accessory nasal sacs were situated ventrocaudal to the chamber. The location of the olfactory mucosa within the olfactory chamber is novel for teleost fish, as it extends dorsally beyond the ventral surface. Microvillar …

Cultivation Of Medicinal Plants In Greenhouse Hydroponics., Dana. Simeunovic Jan 2002

Interest in medicinal plants as an alternative crop for greenhouse growers was the impetus for this project, as little information exists on the commercial production of medicinal plants in hydroponics under greenhouse conditions. This research project was designed to (1) identify medicinal plants with commercial potential, (2) evaluate their suitability for greenhouse hydroponic growth, (3) determine optimal concentrations and ratios of nutrient solutions, and (4) manipulate nitrogen levels as a possible regulator of leaf tissue production and of secondary metabolite production in two medicinally important plants, Hypericum perforatum and Tanacetum parthenium . Once nutrient regimes had been optimized to give …

A Framework For Completely Separating The Presentation And Logic Of Web-Based Applications., Shuling. Nie Jan 2002

A Framework For Completely Separating The Presentation And Logic Of Web-Based Applications., Shuling. Nie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) has grown at a phenomenal rate. The Web has become the solution for information exchange, user interaction and business processing. However, building dynamic, interactive and maintainable Web-based applications is not an easy task. Technologies currently used for Web presentation generation do not separate the presentation and logic. This requires people of two different skill sets to be involved at the same time, therefore applications are difficult to develop and maintain. In recent years, several frameworks have been developed to remedy the problem. But they all have some limitations and …

Computer Vision-Based Registration For Augmented Reality., Zonglei. Huang Jan 2002

Computer Vision-Based Registration For Augmented Reality., Zonglei. Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Augmented reality is a young but very active research area. It is considered a variant of virtual reality. In virtual reality, the user is immersed completely in the virtual scene; whereas in an augmented reality system, the user can see the real scene with the virtual object superimposed onto the real scene. Registration in augmented reality aligns the virtual object with the real scene in 3D. The use of computer vision techniques for registration is an ideal method to accomplish this. In this thesis, a computer vision-based interactive object registration system was developed for augmented reality. In this system, the …

The Partnership Of Peacebuilding: A Case Study Of Justice Development In Haiti., David Charles. Beer Jan 2002

The Partnership Of Peacebuilding: A Case Study Of Justice Development In Haiti., David Charles. Beer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since peacebuilding was introduced as a strategy for the international community to deal more effectively with intra-state conflict, it has become recognized as a complex and expensive process of change, demanding collective action. The international 'partnership' of peacebuilding that has emerged is examined in the context of justice sector development in Haiti. Issues that tended to complicate the peacebuilding process, and impact on the success of the intervention: multilateralism and donor self-interest, the need of systems development, the role of the civil sector, success measurement, and sustainability of programs, are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the extent to which …

The Second Law Analysis Of A Spark Ignition Engine Fueled With Compressed Natural Gas, Shengmei Zhang Jan 2002

The Second Law Analysis Of A Spark Ignition Engine Fueled With Compressed Natural Gas, Shengmei Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a fundamental thermodynamic modeling approach to study internal combustion engines. The computations of the thermodynamic functions, especially availability, have been developed to seek better energy utilization, analyze engine performance and optimize design of spark ignition (SI) engines fueled with compressed natural gas (CNG), by using both the first and the second law analyses. A single-zone heat release model with constant thermodynamic properties is built into the air cycle simulation, while a more comprehensive two-zone combustion model with burning rate as a sinusoidal function of crank angle is built into the fuel/air thermodynamic engine cycle simulation. The computations …

Finite Element Modeling Of Dry Frictional Contact., Yuan. Yao Jan 2002

Finite Element Modeling Of Dry Frictional Contact., Yuan. Yao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Contact Problem is of great practical significance. The nature of contact and friction, however, is so complex that the science of contact interaction is not sufficiently advanced for assisting in real engineering problems. One of the difficulties with contact interaction is the nature of surface friction, another is the nonlinear character arising from the free boundary condition. The computation of the exact stress and deformation around the contact boundary region is vital for engineering analysis and design, but obtaining exact solutions based on the theory of elasticity has been a challenge for physicists and mathematicians since the end of …
