Imbalance Response Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Rigid Rotor Supported By Hybrid Three Pad Air Foil Bearing, Prajwal Krishna Shetty Jan 2010

Imbalance Response Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Rigid Rotor Supported By Hybrid Three Pad Air Foil Bearing, Prajwal Krishna Shetty

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Air foil bearings (AFB's) are widely used in small to midsized turbomachinery. They provide safer, cleaner and cheaper bearing operation. They are simple in construction, offer very low drag friction and have very high reliability at high speed operations. A major advantage of air foil bearings compared to conventional rigid surface bearings is their superior dynamic performance in rotor bearing systems. Since there is no contact between the rotor and bearing surface, the air foil bearings have a higher service life compared to rigid surface bearings. Hybrid AFB's operate under both hydrodynamic and hydrostatic condition. The present study is a …

Evaluation Of Trenchless Renewal Methods For Potable Water Distribution Pipes, Abhay A. Jain Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Trenchless Renewal Methods For Potable Water Distribution Pipes, Abhay A. Jain

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Undoubtedly, potable water pipes, as part of an underground infrastructure system, play a key role in maintaining quality of life, health and well being of human kind. As these potable water pipes reach the end of their useful life, they create high maintenance costs, loss of flow capacity, decreased water quality, and increased dissatisfaction. Trenchless renewal methods (TRMs) are a medium to renew deteriorated potable water pipes, thus decreasing leakage loss, emergency maintenance costs and customer complaints. TRMs also maintain the quality of the water leaving the treatment plant. America's drinking water systems faces an annual shortfall of at least …

An Investigation Of Productivity Loss Due To Outdoor Noise Conditions, Shripad Dilip Maldikar Jan 2010

An Investigation Of Productivity Loss Due To Outdoor Noise Conditions, Shripad Dilip Maldikar

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Most people in day to day life at one time or other get irritated or distracted by surrounding noises. The irritation might have resulted in minor aggravation or may have been dramatic enough to hinder their work. This leads us to think whether there are any losses in the efficiency of construction workers due to surrounding varying noise conditions, or if they naturally adjust to their acoustic environment. In an effort to answer this question, this study on productivity loss due to varying sound conditions was conducted. It was found that, the efficiency of laborers was inversely proportional to the …

A Study On The Corrosion Behavior Of Nanocrystalline Nickel In Aqueous Environments, Anjana Shyam Sundar Jan 2010

A Study On The Corrosion Behavior Of Nanocrystalline Nickel In Aqueous Environments, Anjana Shyam Sundar

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Nanocrystalline materials possess considerably enhanced properties arising from their small grain size. Significant interest has been paid in the past to their mechanical and physical properties. Very little attention has been attracted by their electrochemical behavior, which is expected to be affected by the significant volume fraction of grain boundaries. In the present study, corrosion experiments were conducted in nanocrystalline nickel in two entirely different solutions in order to obtain a better understanding of its corrosion behavior. This is of particular interest to MEMS and NEMS devices where electroplated nanocrystalline nickel is the metal of choice. The corrosion behavior of …

Performance-Based Plastic Design Of Earthquake Resistant Steel Structures: Concentrically Braced Frames, Tall Moment Frames, Plate Shear Wall Frames, Mohammad Reza Bayat Jan 2010

Performance-Based Plastic Design Of Earthquake Resistant Steel Structures: Concentrically Braced Frames, Tall Moment Frames, Plate Shear Wall Frames, Mohammad Reza Bayat

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

It is well known that structures designed by current codes experience large inelastic deformations during major earthquakes. However, current seismic design practice in the U.S. is based on elastic structural behavior and accounts for inelastic behavior only in an indirect manner through certain modification factors such as R, I, and Cd. Under moderate to severe earthquakes, inelastic activity, including severe yielding and buckling of structural members can be unevenly distributed in the structure which may result in global collapse or costly repair work. Recently, a new design method has been developed and referred to as Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD). This …

Time Depedent Queuing Models Of The National Airspace, Chatabush Roongrat

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Air transportation in the US system has dramatically changed in the past few decades. The National Airspace System (NAS) has increasingly become congested. A high volume of air traffic demand is one of the major challenges of the NAS. However, air traffic is very difficult to study due to many uncertainties involved. It is important that we be able to understand the relationship under uncertainties due to aviation operations, precision of navigation and control, and traffic flow efficiency. Many queuing models have been studied to better understand and quantify these relationships. In the past decade, most queuing network models assume …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Ferromagnetic Nanowires, Poching Tsai

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Ferromagnetic nanocrystals with shape anisotropy have drawn great attention in the past decades because of their unique magnetic properties and for their potential applications in ultra-high-density magnetic recording media, exchange-coupled nanocomposite magnets and related nanodevices. In this thesis, synthesis and characterixation of ferromagnetic CoNi and CoFe nanowires are reported. CoNi nanocrystals with different size, shape and composition were successfully synthesized via a catalyst chemical solution method. It was found out that the structure and morphology can be controlled by altering the NaOH concentration, and the elongation of the nanowires can be adjusted by changing surfactants ratio and catalyst amount. Unlike …

Incorporation Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor And Pleiotrophin Into A Multiluminal Biosynthetic Nerve Implant For The Repair Of Peripheral Nerve Long Gap Defects, An Hai Nguyen

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

To repair a fully transected nerve without putting undue tension on the nerve stumps, and too circumvent many of the obvious problems of using harvested nerve grafts synthetic nerve guides have been used in the clinical setting. Thus far this strategy has met with minimal success for the repair of short defects (i.e. 1 - 2.5 cm) while any defect larger than 3 cm have failed. We hypothesize that neurotorphic support, early vascularization, and contact guidance are needed to successfully regenerate a nerve across a long-gap defect. To this end we proposed a biosynthetic nerve implant (BNI) with a multiluminal …

Tribological Performance Of Ashless Antiwear Additives Under Extreme Pressure Conditions, Bohoon Kim Dec 2009

Tribological Performance Of Ashless Antiwear Additives Under Extreme Pressure Conditions, Bohoon Kim

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Zinc diakyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) has been used in engine oil for several decades as an antiwear additive. However, ZDDP is the primary source of P, S and Zn in the exhaust, which results in frequent maintenance or replacement of exhaust gas treatment systems. The use of ashless additives is more desirable because of recent environmental regulations. The main goal of this research was to develop a fundamental understanding of how ashless compounds protect the tribological surface in comparison to ZDDP. X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) has been performed on tribo and thermal films in order to investigate the …

Developing Eligibility Criteria For Daylighting Streams As Applied To Dallas' Mill Creek, Deepa Harkishore Koshaley Sep 2009

Developing Eligibility Criteria For Daylighting Streams As Applied To Dallas' Mill Creek, Deepa Harkishore Koshaley

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Daylighting is a deliberate act of exposing the full or partial flow of previously buried rivers, creeks and streams into restored surface waterways. Human development has encroached upon natural streams and confined them in concrete channels and pipes, covered them partially or fully, and altered their natural courses. Eventually this has caused reductions in flow capacity, increase in flow velocity, and water pollution, leading to floods, erosion, and loss of natural resources. Stream daylighting is in a developmental phase, meaning that most of the daylighting projects have been undertaken without proper hydrological, geomorphological, and ecological assessment or knowledge of the …

Ecological Design In Resort Hotel Properties: Management Perceptions Of Ecologically Performative Landscape Practices, Kristen Leigh Mitrakis Sep 2009

Ecological Design In Resort Hotel Properties: Management Perceptions Of Ecologically Performative Landscape Practices, Kristen Leigh Mitrakis

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

It has been argued that in order to bring about society's acceptance of sustainable landscape practices, landscape architects must make them transparent; that is, visible, and ultimately understandable, to the observer. Only when the members of society become familiar with these techniques do they move into the realm of aesthetic acceptability (Thayer 1994; Bohdanowicz 2005). But given that ecologically performative landscapes are often perceived as "messy" (Nassauer 2002, 196), a compatibility issue arises when considering implementation of such visible technologies within landscapes that require a high level of aesthetic refinement. This research examines perceptions of ecologically performative landscape practices held by …

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight Sep 2009

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The land development process is essentially a three step progression consisting of input from developers who envision and fund a project, designers who translate the developer's vision into a buildable project, and the regulators who ensure that the project upholds, to the extent allowable by law, the health, safety, and welfare of mankind including the environment. As an outgrowth of this development model, the modern American city has evolved overtime into a sprawling metropolis, which has had a direct, deleterious impact on watersheds. To address these detrimental impacts, storm water regulations have been authored on federal, state, and local levels, which …

Magnetically Anchored "Reduced Trocar" Laparoscopy: Evolution Of Surgical Robotics, Richard Bergs May 2009

Magnetically Anchored "Reduced Trocar" Laparoscopy: Evolution Of Surgical Robotics, Richard Bergs

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Laparoscopic surgery has become increasingly popular over the last few years due to its benefits; lower morbidity, less perceived pain, better cosmesis results, and less hospital time. For the surgeon however, there are fundamental issues that can make a laparoscopic procedure more difficult than simple open surgery; loss of tactile feel, limited working envelope, high demand for hand-eye coordination, and one trocar-port required for each tool. A revolutionary concept of using magnetics to support tooling across the abdominal wall was conceived by Dr. Jeffrey Cadeddu and his colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Collectively referred to as …
