Molecular Mechanics Simulations Of The Three Dimensional Cavity Problem, Donald Greenspan
Molecular Mechanics Simulations Of The Three Dimensional Cavity Problem, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The rapid development of computer technology has resulted in broad interest in three dimensional fluid simulation, which is known to have more complex force interactions than occur in two dimensions (see, e.g., refs. [1-6], [9], [11-15], [17], [18] and the additional references therein). In this paper we develop and analyze some molecular mechanics simulations of the three dimensional cavity problem. The fluid considered is water at 15° C.

Challenging The Status Quo : Toward Smaller, Smarter Government : A Report From The Texas Performance Review, Texas Performance Review (Agency), Texas Comptroller's Office
Documents from the State of Texas-Archive
This report includes proposals that initially appeared in the Texas Performance Review's staff draft issued in December 1998, as well as new issues developed at my direction. Other issues have been modified to reflect new information, improved recommendations, and other amendments that make sense for Texas. This report demonstrates the firm commitment of this office to introduce innovation and best practices into government operations, so that we may serve Texas taxpayers in the most cost-effective way possible. In all, the proposals in Challenging the Status Quo will free up $1.25 billion in all funds during the 2000-01 biennium, including $429.6 …

Tennis, Geometric Progression, Probability And Basketball, Mostafa Ghandehari
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
The following problem about a tennis match is well—known. See Halmos [1, 2]. Consider 2n tennis players playing a single elimination match. Ask the question: what are the number of games played? The answer can be obtained in two ways. First using the geometric progression 2n-1 + 2n-2 + • • • -2+1 we find that the answer is 2n — 1. We can also explain the answer as follows: for each game played there is a loser. Thus the total number of games played is equal to the number of losers. Since there is only one winner the total …
A Quadratic Fredholm Integral Equation And Its Solution For Various Kernels, Merlynd K. Nestell, Mostafa Ghandehari
A Quadratic Fredholm Integral Equation And Its Solution For Various Kernels, Merlynd K. Nestell, Mostafa Ghandehari
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
Consider the Fredholm integral equation [see pdf for notation], a parameter. The solution of this equation is discussed for separable, difference and distribution kernels. Existence, uniqueness and bifurcation questions are explored for various assumptions on the kernel.
Heating Water Vapor In A Square Cavity Using Molecular And Particle Mechanics, Donald Greenspan
Heating Water Vapor In A Square Cavity Using Molecular And Particle Mechanics, Donald Greenspan
Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive
This paper explores the computer simulation of heating water vapor in a square cavity. Both molecular and particle mechanics are applied. A particular parameter called vel, found on the micro level, is shown to be applicable on the macro level in generating both laminar and turbulent flows.

The First Full-Scale Accelerated Pavement Test In Louisiana: Development And Findings, J.B. Metcalf, Stefan Romanoschi, Y. Li, M. Rasoulian
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive
The Pavement Research Facility in Port Allen, Louisiana houses the first full-scale accelerated pavement testing experiment in the state. The purpose of the first experiment was to evaluate the historically prevalent flexible crushed stone and in-place soil cement stabilized base construction in comparison to several alternative base construction materials and construction processes for pavements designed for a semi-tropical climate. Loading is provided by an Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) machine, the second of its type in the United States. More than six million equivalent axle loads (ESALs) were applied to the nine test lanes. Performance of the pavement structures and materials …

Towards A "Critical Regionalism" For Rapidly Developing Areas Of Texas., David Dumez Hopman
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
The published intellectual discourse on "Critical Regionalism" is more prolific in the literature of architecture and planning than that of landscape architecture. As a result, the existing parameters used to define regional elements are not always useful to landscape architects, particularly in rapidly developing areas in which there are few, easily recognizable, regional components to the landscape. This thesis uses the ideas embodied in Critical Regionalism as a means to reveal how selected landscape architects and landscape designers interpret the landscapes and architecture of Texas through their individual landscape design philosophies and methodologies. Specific methodologies for extracting regional elements from …

The growing interest in computer use at home and in the workplace has led to the incorporation of computer skills into school curricula. Numerous claims assert the benefit of computers, but questions remain concerning the nature of that benefit. The increasingly widespread use of telecommunications raises further questions regarding the effect of computer-mediated communication on language development. Unfortunately, few rigorous studies have been conducted to provide evidence of the actual effect of e-mail on children's writing skills. The data for this study are handwritten compositions, e-mail messages, and surveys/interviews collected from two schools, matched for demographic and academic variables. The …

1998.2 - Aquarium Bilbao, Martin Price, Chy-Tseh Che, Dani Alsina-Tora
School of Architecture Student Projects - Archive
Design work from the 1998 fall semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Aquarium. Chy-tseh Che, scheme one, and Dani Alsina-Tora, scheme two. An eddy or circular movement of water becomes the metaphor for an aquarium set in the river in Bilbao, Spain in scheme one. Spatial sequences flow from entry on land, through tunnels in the water, to ramps inside the aquarium. Scheme two is a landshape form in order not to be dwarfed by the adjacent Guggenheim. The ground is lifted up into the sky and the sky is brought down into …

Overwhelmingly, people who work in organizations cite their managers as having the greatest influence both on the quality of their work and the quality of their work-life. Managers also exert tremendous influence over the success or failure of organizational change initiatives. This article suggests that organizational change efforts have greater chances for success when managers are held accountable for practicing and modeling the behaviors required of the change initiative. The article describes a model system of accountability enacted in a composite organization and the effects on employee retention, job satisfaction and customer-service quality.

Rectangular, two dimensional sheets of ice molecules are both stressed and compressed. Computer examples compare dynamical responses when the plate has a slot or does not have a slot. The mechanisms for both crack and fracture development are clearly delineated on the molecular level.

The authority's wealth, however, has seemed to engender a dangerous laxity in the fiscal policies of past board members and managers, and a tendency ignore the needs and expectations of its customers and owners -the taxpayers. This lack of cost-consciorisness has resulted in expensive consulting studies that sit on shelves, ignored and unused; failed projects that produce little for the- authority or its customers; and a general absence of budgetary restraint and common-sense accountabiiity. This-laxity has been encouraged, as documented in dozens of past studies and news articles, by the fact that Capital Metro has never enjoyed stable leadership. Its legacy, …
