Electromagnetic Wave Scattering From Vegetation, Xiaoyan Huang
Electromagnetic Wave Scattering From Vegetation, Xiaoyan Huang
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation contains the theoretical study of microwave scattering from vegetated media and the development of microwave scattering models with applications to these media. A vegetation canopy may consist of deciduous or coniferous leaves, branches, and trunks with certain size and orientation distributions. The formulation of the scattering model for each element of the canopy is carried out and its scatter patterns versus its size and orientation for like and cross polarizations are computed and presented. In particular, an extension is made where vegetation with a compound-leaf pattern is considered. For this type of vegetation, several leaves that form a …

Evaluating Indexing And Routing Schemes For Spatial Queries In Sensor Networks, Raja Rajeshwari Anugula
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Recent advances in low-power sensing devices coupled with widespread availability of wireless ad-hoc networks, has fueled the development of sensor networks. These senor networks have various applications such as to monitor conditions at different locations (temperature, pressure, rainfall, vibrations etc.,), tracking of objects and so on. Each device is equipped with an energy source (usually with a battery), memory, CPU and communication bandwidth, which is severely constrained. Hence each sensor network is comprised of hardware for sensing, software for communication and computational algorithms. Spatial queries are commonly applied to sensor network, for example: "Find the highest temperature sensed in a …

Nonlinear Control Of Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Devices, Kwadwo Osei Owusu
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Different actuation principles have been developed for MEMS but electrostatic actuators are the most common. A significant drawback in the use of electrostatic actuators for some applications is their nonlinear voltage to position characteristics. Analog operation of these devices requires the use of feedback to stabilize and linearize them. Controlling and optimizing the operation of electrostatic controllers using feedback requires the establishment of the complete and accurate dynamical model of the device. In this thesis, we show how an optical switch driven by a MEMS electrostatic comb drive is controlled to guarantee its performance, stability and reliability for use in …

3d Interconnects For Die And Wafer Stacks, Rachita Dewan
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
3D integration results from the ever demanding trend towards smaller and lower-profile, lighter and lower cost packaged devices requires further package miniaturization. With the present System-on-chip (SOC) technology reaching its limitation in terms of functionality and cost, effort are being concentrated on exploring the third dimension, i.e. 3D integration. It provides a volumetric packaging solution for higher integration and performance and results in size and weight reduction. Approaches to achieve 3D integration are die and wafer stacking. A key technology to realize the potential of stacking is implementation of vertical electrical interconnects between die and wafer stacks. This thesis discusses …

Modeling And Performance Evaluation Of A Power Electronic-Based Controlled Fuel Cell System, Yashar Ehsan Kenarangui
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
In fuel cell applications, design of an appropriate controller and selection of an Ultra-Capacitor require a suitable model of fuel-cell-systems that can adequately represent the significant characteristics of the system. Such a model, using lumped circuit elements, was developed in this thesis via a simple method without requiring fuel cell design parameters. To validate the model, simulation results from the model were compared against the results from experimental setups and satisfactory results were obtained. Later, this model was used in order to design a controller that meets the control objectives, namely, regulation of output voltage and attenuation of load current …

Determinants Of Adverse Usage Of Information Systems Assets: A Study Of Antecedents Of Is Exploit In Organizations, Aakash Taneja
Business Administration Dissertations - Archive
Information systems assets are vital to the functioning and survival of organizations. Therefore, organizations expend many resources in protecting these assets. Organizations spent resources on technologies, policies, procedures, guidelines, user awareness, education, training and other protection mechanisms. Advancing technology and complexity of organizations make the protection of these assets a continuing challenge. Studies show that in spite of these efforts, the main reason for security failures in organizations is due to human behavior (Stanton et al. 2004). This study speaks for an enhanced behavioral model for the adverse usage of IS assets and addresses the factors that influence these behaviors. …

Housing policy as one of the tools for eradicating poverty remains a critical arena for debate, especially in light of the dire situation of impoverished inner cities and growing inequalities between communities in the U.S. Policies aimed towards ameliorating the negative effects of these inequalities on impecunious residents include deconcentrating poverty through the dispersion of public housing residents into more affluent neighborhoods. The logic behind this approach is the assumption that removing barriers and obstacles from low income families by integrating them into middle class neighborhoods will increase the life chances of the low income families. These policies are often …

Novel Preparation Of Polymeric Scaffolds For Tissue Engineering Using Phase Separation With Protein Microbubble Incorporation, Ashwin Nair
Bioengineering Theses - Archive
Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been extensively used as a biodegradable and porous tissue scaffold due to their biocompatibility and degradability. Several techniques have been developed for the fabrication of polymeric scaffolds but they all have some limitation or the other which has in turn hampered the growth of cells seeded on them. Salt leached scaffolds have good porosity and large pores but poor mechanical strength and the problem of residual salt even after leaching. Similarly gas foaming scaffolds have shown large pores but poor interconnection with residual ammonium salts. Other methods like thermally induced phase separation and fiber bonding …

Changes to the anatomical or physiological structure of the neuronal circuitry are known to produce a change in the optical properties of the tissue under investigation. The goal of this thesis is to determine changes in the light scattering and hemoglobin oxygen saturation in three cases: (i) a normal spinal cord, (ii) demyelinated sciatic nerve, and (iii) spinal cord under neuronal activity induced by peripheral electrical stimulation. We hypothesize that (i) nerve demyelination or degeneration would result in a decrease in light scattering and hemoglobin oxygen saturation and (ii) peripheral electrical stimulation would show an increase in light scattering and …
