The $5000 Campaign Contribution Cap: Americans’ Perceptions Of Trust And Corruption, Kelly Bergstrand, Cristopher T. Robertson

Social Work Datasets-Archive

Recently, some states have passed laws to limit the size of campaign contributions, such as a voter-approved ballot measure in Maine targeting independent political action committees (e.g., super PACs). Few studies investigate super PAC reform, and our study is the first to test Maine's novel form of regulation. Additionally, we evaluate the appearance of quid pro quo corruption: a critical factor for campaign finance reform to survive legal challenges. To do so, we conducted two experimental studies with 1131 respondents. First, we examined whether the size of donations affected perceptions of political corruption. We find that larger donations, especially those …

Media Use And Pro-Equality Attitudes Toward Women As Leaders, Mark Tremayne, Dustin Harp, Ariana Hernandez Feb 2026

Media Use And Pro-Equality Attitudes Toward Women As Leaders, Mark Tremayne, Dustin Harp, Ariana Hernandez

Communication Faculty Publications

This study examines how Americans’ media use corresponds with attitudes toward women as leaders. We surveyed 1,030 adults and measured pro-equality attitudes using a 17-item index. Newspaper reading and streaming video use were positively associated with pro-equality views, while time spent on social media (particularly Facebook and X) showed small negative associations. Participants who used newspapers for political content reported higher pro-equality scores than non-users, whereas those who used X for politics reported lower scores. The findings suggest that media habits and political ideology are connected to gender attitudes.

The fact that cultural critics are wishing the show away at the point at which it has reached its popular cultural zenith of mass appeal is significant in that it is indicative of a widely held position, which readily equates (mass) media culture with bad or low culture, frightening, out of bounds, vulgar and excessive (Skeggs 2005a). At …
