Molecular programmers and nanostructure engineers use domain-level design to abstract away messy DNA/RNA sequence, chemical and geometric details. Such domain-level abstractions are enforced by sequence design principles and provide a key principle that allows scaling up of complex multistranded DNA/RNA programs and structures. Determining the most favoured secondary structure, or Minimum Free Energy (MFE), of a set of strands, is typically studied at the sequence level but has seen limited domain-level work. We analyse the computational complexity of MFE for multistranded systems in a simple setting were we allow only 1 or 2 domains per strand. On the one hand, …

We report the spectroscopic confirmation and fundamental properties of TOI 757 b, a mini Neptune on a 17.5 d orbit transiting a bright star ( mag) discovered by the TESS mission. We acquired high precision radial velocity measurements with the HARPS, ESPRESSO, and PFS spectrographs to confirm the planet detection and determine its mass. We also acquired space borne transit photometry with the CHEOPS space telescope to place stronger constraints on the planet radius, supported with ground based LCOGT photometry. WASP and KELT photometry were used to help constrain the stellar rotation period. We also determined the fundamental parameters of …

Faculty online learning communities (FOLCs) can help faculty effectively adopt and persist in using research-based curricula. This paper documents faculty perspectives on the value they gained from participating in a multi-year FOLC designed to help them implement an inquiry-based physical science curriculum. Personal value narratives were collected from 11 volunteer FOLC participants. In the narratives, participants responded to prompts regarding their initial reasons for participation, activities they engaged in, and values they gained, as well as how participation impacted their profession, social connections, professional practice, and ability to influence their world as teachers. Qualitative analysis shows that the values faculty …

Influence Of Plastic Coating Temperature On Recycled Concrete Brick Coarse Aggregate, Jamil Ahmed Joy, Chowdhury Zubayer Bin Zahid, S. M. Imdadul Islam Sep 2024

Influence Of Plastic Coating Temperature On Recycled Concrete Brick Coarse Aggregate, Jamil Ahmed Joy, Chowdhury Zubayer Bin Zahid, S. M. Imdadul Islam

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The generation of waste from the demolition of old structures poses a significant environmental challenge. Recycling these materials as aggregates in concrete offers a potential alleviation of environmental impact. While recycled aggregates offer promise as a remedy, they are not without drawbacks. However, innovative approaches have been developed to overcome these limitations. Among these, plastic coating stands out as a particularly sustainable solution. This study investigates the influence of plastic coating temperature on recycled concrete brick aggregates (RCBA), which serve as coarse aggregates. The RCBA were coated with locally sourced polyethylene terephthalate (PET) at varying temperatures, such as 250 °C, …

Exact Solutions Of Stochastic Burgers–Korteweg De Vries Type Equation With Variable Coefficients, Kolade Adjibi, Allan Martinez, Miguel Mascorro, Carlos Montes, Tamer Oraby, Rita Sandoval, Erwin Suazo Sep 2024

Exact Solutions Of Stochastic Burgers–Korteweg De Vries Type Equation With Variable Coefficients, Kolade Adjibi, Allan Martinez, Miguel Mascorro, Carlos Montes, Tamer Oraby, Rita Sandoval, Erwin Suazo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We will present exact solutions for three variations of the stochastic Korteweg de Vries–Burgers (KdV–Burgers) equation featuring variable coefficients. In each variant, white noise exhibits spatial uniformity, and the three categories include additive, multiplicative, and advection noise. Across all cases, the coefficients are time-dependent functions. Our discovery indicates that solving certain deterministic counterparts of KdV–Burgers equations and composing the solution with a solution of stochastic differential equations leads to the exact solution of the stochastic Korteweg de Vries–Burgers (KdV–Burgers) equations.

Numerical Simulations For Fractional Differential Equations Of Higher Order And A Wright-Type Transformation, Mariana Nacianceno, Tamer Oraby, Hansapani Rodrigo, Y. Sepulveda, Josef A. Sifuentes, Erwin Suazo, T. Stuck, J. Williams Sep 2024

Numerical Simulations For Fractional Differential Equations Of Higher Order And A Wright-Type Transformation, Mariana Nacianceno, Tamer Oraby, Hansapani Rodrigo, Y. Sepulveda, Josef A. Sifuentes, Erwin Suazo, T. Stuck, J. Williams

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this work, a new relationship is established between the solutions of higher order fractional differential equations and a Wright-type transformation. Solutions could be interpreted as expected values of functions in a random time process. As applications, we solve the fractional beam equation, fractional electric circuits with special functions as external sources, derive d’Alembert’s formula and show the existence of explicit solutions for a general fractional wave equation with variable coefficients. Due to this relationship, we present two methods for simulating solutions of fractional differential equations. The two approaches use the interpretation of the Caputo derivative of a function as …

Learners’ Mathematics Identity And Achievement: Where Does The Teacher Come In?, Luis M. Fernandez, Ursula Nguyen, Rebecca Callahan Sep 2024

Learners’ Mathematics Identity And Achievement: Where Does The Teacher Come In?, Luis M. Fernandez, Ursula Nguyen, Rebecca Callahan

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In response to recent interest in K-12th students’ mathematics identity formation and its implications for achievement, the present study examines the relationship between learners’ mathematics identity and student achievement while simultaneously accounting for teacher-enacted instructional practices in mathematics. Drawing from HSLS:2009, a nationally representative dataset of 9th–12th students within the United States, we use multiple linear regression analyses to examine how teachers’ mathematical pedagogies and 9th grade students’ perceptions of teacher equity are associated, first, with students’ mathematics identity, and, subsequently, math achievement after accounting for students’ mathematics identity. Ultimately, results from our models reveal a statistically significant relationship between …

We present the results from a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernovae observed optically within 30 Mpc during the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. No gravitational wave associated with a core-collapse supernova has been identified. We then report the detection efficiency for a variety of possible gravitational-wave emissions. For neutrino-driven explosions, the distance at which we reach 50% detection efficiency is up to 8.9 kpc, while more energetic magnetorotationally driven explosions are detectable at larger distances. The distance reaches for selected models of the black hole formation, and quantum chromodynamics phase transition are also …

On Blow-Up And Explicit Soliton Solutions For Coupled Variable Coefficient Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Jose M. Escorcia, Erwin Suazo Aug 2024

On Blow-Up And Explicit Soliton Solutions For Coupled Variable Coefficient Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations, Jose M. Escorcia, Erwin Suazo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This work is concerned with the study of explicit solutions for a generalized coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) system with variable coefficients. Indeed, by employing similarity transformations, we show the existence of rogue wave and dark–bright soliton-like solutions for such a generalized NLS system, provided the coefficients satisfy a Riccati system. As a result of the multiparameter solution of the Riccati system, the nonlinear dynamics of the solution can be controlled. Finite-time singular solutions in the 𝐿∞ norm for the generalized coupled NLS system are presented explicitly. Finally, an n-dimensional transformation between a variable coefficient NLS coupled system and a …

Cosmic Variance Of The Hellings And Downs Correlation For Ensembles Of Universes Having Nonzero Angular Power Spectra, Deepali Agarwal, Joseph D. Romano Aug 2024

Cosmic Variance Of The Hellings And Downs Correlation For Ensembles Of Universes Having Nonzero Angular Power Spectra, Deepali Agarwal, Joseph D. Romano

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Gravitational waves (GWs) induce correlated perturbations to the arrival times of pulses from an array of galactic millisecond pulsars. The expected correlations, obtained by averaging over many pairs of pulsars having the same angular separation (pulsar averaging) and over an ensemble of model universes (ensemble averaging), are described by the Hellings and Downs curve. As shown by Allen [Phys. Rev. D 107, 043018 (2023)], the pulsar-averaged correlation will not agree exactly with the expected Hellings and Downs prediction if the gravitational-wave sources interfere with one another, differing instead by a “cosmic variance” contribution. The …

Understanding Associations Between Disasters And Sustainability, Resilience, And Poverty: An Empirical Study Of The Last Two Decades, Dean Kyne, Dominic Kyei

Sociology Faculty Publications

This study investigates the impact of disasters on sustainability, resilience, and poverty, using data from the “Sustainable Development Report” and the Emergency Events Database (EM-DAT) from 2000 to 2023. Regression models assessed the effects of disasters, deaths, injuries, affected individuals, and economic damage on normalized values of the dependent variables with lag periods of one, two, and three years of independent variables. The results reveal that disasters consistently negatively impact sustainability and resilience, highlighting the need for robust disaster risk reduction strategies and resilient infrastructure. Higher mortality rates significantly hindered development, emphasizing the importance of improving early warning systems, emergency …

A Dft Comparison Of C–C Reductive Coupling From Terminal Cyanido And Cyaphido Complexes Of Nickel, Roberto Escobar, Jessica Meza, Javier Pena, Abdurrahman Atesin, William D. Jones, Christian Müller, Tülay A. Ateşin Aug 2024

A Dft Comparison Of C–C Reductive Coupling From Terminal Cyanido And Cyaphido Complexes Of Nickel, Roberto Escobar, Jessica Meza, Javier Pena, Abdurrahman Atesin, William D. Jones, Christian Müller, Tülay A. Ateşin

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

The density functional theory study of the thermal C–C reductive coupling from terminal cyanido and hypothetical cyaphido complexes of [Ni(dmpe)] (dmpe = 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) revealed the key reaction intermediate in the reductive C–CP coupling being a σ-CC complex unlike an η2-aryl complex in the Ni C–CN system, as already observed in our previous studies. The reaction in THF is endothermic by 4.9 kcal/mol for cyanido with a 32.0 kcal/mol activation barrier and exothermic by 28.5 kcal/mol for cyaphido with an 11.3 kcal/mol activation barrier. To compare our results with the existing experimental data, we chose mesityl as the aryl group and …

Microeukaryotes are key contributors to marine carbon cycling. Their physiology, ecology, and interactions with the chemical environment are poorly understood in offshore ecosystems, and especially in the deep ocean. Using the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Clio, microbial communities along a 1050 km transect in the western North Atlantic Ocean were surveyed at 10–200 m vertical depth increments to capture metabolic signatures spanning oligotrophic, continental margin, and productive coastal ecosystems. Microeukaryotes were examined using a paired metatranscriptomic and metaproteomic approach. Here we show a diverse surface assemblage consisting of stramenopiles, dinoflagellates and ciliates represented in both the transcript and protein fractions, …

Ultralight Vector Dark Matter Search Using Data From The Kagra O3gk Run, A. Abac, R. Abbott, H. Abe, Teviet Creighton, Mario C. Diaz, Francisco Llamas, Soma Mukherjee, Gaukhar Nurbek, Volker Quetschke, Wenhui Wang

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for U(1)B−L gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the …

A Second Homotopy Group For Digital Images, Gregory Lupton, Oleg R. Musin, Nicholas A. Scoville, P. Christopher Staecker, Jonathan Treviño-Marroquín

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We define a second (higher) homotopy group for digital images. Namely, we construct a functor from digital images to abelian groups, which closely resembles the ordinary second homotopy group from algebraic topology. We illustrate that our approach can be effective by computing this (digital) second homotopy group for a digital 2-sphere.

Free Energy Differences In Nonequilibrium Thermodynamic Processes, Paul Bracken Aug 2024

Free Energy Differences In Nonequilibrium Thermodynamic Processes, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Systems which may be allowed to go out of equilibrium have been of interest recently. A quantity is formulated whose average over an ensemble of microscopic realizations of the process depends only on the initial and final states. This is so even though the system may not be in equilibrium during the process. A generalization to the case where the initial and final states are not equilibrium states is developed here. Quantum analogues of these relations are derived, and an indication of how this might be applied to study entropy increase in thermodynamics is presented.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Nial-Hydride Heterometallics: Perturbing Electron Density Within Al–H–Ni Subunits, Aleida G. Gonzalez, Fernando Gonzalez, Edgar De Leon, Kaitlyn M. Birkhoff, Sam Yruegas, Haoyuan Chen, Manar Shoshani

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Heterometallic hydride complexes are of growing interest due to their potential to contribute to highly active insertion-based catalysis; however, methods to modulate electron density within this class of molecules are underexplored. Addition of ancillary ligands to heterotrimetallic NiAl2H2 species (1) results in the formation of heterobimetallic NiAl-hydride complexes with varying phosphine donors (2-(L)2). Incorporation of sigma donating ancillary ligands of increasing strength led to contractions of the Ni–Al distances correlated to a strengthening of a back donation interaction to the Al–H sigma antibonding orbital, most prominently present in 2-(PMe3)2. Demethylation of the aryl ether from 2-(PMe3)2 provides access to a …

Teaching-focused professional development (PD) programs offered at institutions of higher education (IHEs) are uniquely positioned to be levers of change that improve the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in ways that broaden participation in STEM education, workforce development, and career pathways in the United States (US). PD programs and their potential to transform undergraduate STEM education, however, are understudied. This multiple-case study compares suites of PD programs offered at three IHEs in the US: a community college, an emerging research institution, and a research-intensive university. Each suite of PD programs is characterized in terms of …

Traveling Wave Phenomena Of Inhomogeneous Half-Wave Equation, Zhaosheng Feng, Yu Su Aug 2024

Traveling Wave Phenomena Of Inhomogeneous Half-Wave Equation, Zhaosheng Feng, Yu Su

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we are concerned with traveling wave phenomena of the inhomogeneous half-wave equation, which models the energy of a spin zero particle in the Coulomb field. We study the Gagliardo-Nirenberg and critical Hardy-Sobolev inequalities with velocity 0 < | v | < 1 and obtain the estimates for the best constants and optimizers of inequalities. Moreover, we establish the non-scattering results with small traveling wave for energy subcritical and critical cases.

A Review Of Stable, Traversable Wormholes In F(R) Gravity Theories, Ramesh Radhakrishnan, Patrick Brown, Jacob Matulevich, Eric Davis, Delaram Mirfendereski, Gerald Cleaver Aug 2024

A Review Of Stable, Traversable Wormholes In F(R) Gravity Theories, Ramesh Radhakrishnan, Patrick Brown, Jacob Matulevich, Eric Davis, Delaram Mirfendereski, Gerald Cleaver

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

It has been proven that in standard Einstein gravity, exotic matter (i.e., matter violating the pointwise and averaged Weak and Null Energy Conditions) is required to stabilize traversable wormholes. Quantum field theory permits these violations due to the quantum coherent effects found in any quantum field. Even reasonable classical scalar fields violate the energy conditions. In the case of the Casimir effect and squeezed vacuum states, these violations have been experimentally proven. It is advantageous to investigate methods to minimize the use of exotic matter. One such area of interest is extended theories of Einstein gravity. It has been claimed …

Online programs have made a lasting impact on institutions of higher learning for several decades. This ethnographic qualitative study focused on the development and support of a distance learning department at a Hispanic-serving institution. The study aimed to identify unique organizational elements specific to this Hispanic-serving institution. The findings were significant, revealing that the Distance Learning department, operating under an “academic umbrella”, functioned as a comprehensive hub for both faculty and student support, offering a wide range of services including technical and instructional technology support. Furthermore, the study found that the department's placement under the “academic umbrella” not only centralized …

Enumeration Of Level-K Hypertriangulations, Patrick J. Kaylor Aug 2024

Enumeration Of Level-K Hypertriangulations, Patrick J. Kaylor

Theses and Dissertations

Triangulations are a classical object in discrete and computational geometry that finds it uses in many other fields, including numerous applications. In this thesis we approach the question of enumerating all hypertriangulations of a point set, the family of tilings introduced by Olarte and Santos in 2022 as induced projections of hypersimplices. Unfortunately, the usual approach to enumeration of trinagulations using flips may not work for hypertriangulations as flip-connectivity is only conjectured for that family even in the two-dimensional case. As a result, we develop a DFS-based algorithm and present its Python implementation that enumerates all hypertriangulations of small point …

Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) And Computer Software To Assess Effects Of Cover Crops On Cash Crop Volumetric Mass And Plant Height, Carlos Andres Garcia Patlan

Theses and Dissertations

Sustainability in agriculture starts with the health of soil-- from its productivity and fertility, to its ability to retain water during droughts and allow for drainage during rain. One approach of improving soil health is the use of cover crops, a practice associated with improved nutrient availability in soils, the promotion of soil biodiversity and organic matter to improve density and structure, effective weed management, and ultimately improved yields of subsequent cash crops. Assessing the cumulative impacts of cover crops is difficult, with various metrics and indicators. Crop dry weight may be a way to predict the effects cover crops …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Medicinally Privileged Aza Heterocycles, Nneoma James Aug 2024

Synthesis And Characterization Of Medicinally Privileged Aza Heterocycles, Nneoma James

Theses and Dissertations

Four-membered cyclic amides, commonly known as β-lactams, have played a crucial role in drug discovery research since its discovery by Alexander Fleming in 1928 from Penicillium notatum. The β-lactam antibiotics are broadly effective against several bacterial infections through acylating the transpeptidase involved in cross-linking peptides to form peptidoglycan or periplasmic murein, which is a fundamental constituent of the bacterial cell wall for both the gram-positive (ten or more layers) and gram-negative (one or two layers) bacteria. Although for more than eight decades, β-lactams have been recognized as antibiotics, later, other medicinal activities of β-lactam derivatives have been reported, including lowering …

Chemical Investigation Of The Ethanol Extract Of Tillandsia Usneoides (Spanish Moss), Jakir Hossain

Theses and Dissertations

Tillandsia usneoides in epiphytic bromeliads takes up water through absorptive trichomes on the shoot surface under extreme environmental conditions. Although previous studies revealed the way by which T. usneoides absorbs water and prevents water loss, its water transport remains unclear. Uses of T. usneoides L. have been documented going back to pre-Columbian and late archaic societies. Between the 1800s and 1900s. T. usneoides was utilized in fruit packing and polish, among other industrial goods. In terms of medicine, tillandsia is well-known for treating leucorrhea, rheumatism, ulcers, hemorrhoids, and as an anti-diabetic, emetic, analgesic, purgative, antispasmodic, and diuretic. The chemical composition …
