Anomalous Electromagnetic Transport In Compact Stars, Efrain J. Ferrer, Vivian De La Incera
Anomalous Electromagnetic Transport In Compact Stars, Efrain J. Ferrer, Vivian De La Incera
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
We study the anomalous electromagnetic transport properties of a quark-matter phase that can be realized in the presence of a magnetic field in the low-temperature/moderate-high-density region of the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) phase map. In this so-called Magnetic Dual Chiral Density Wave phase, an inhomogeneous condensate is dynamically induced producing a nontrivial topology, a consequence of the asymmetry of the lowest Landau level modes of the quasiparticles in this phase. The nontrivial topology manifests in the electromagnetic effective action via a chiral anomaly term ˜ , with an axion field given by the phase of the Dual Chiral Density Wave …
Modeling Of Aggregation And Gelation Of Nanoparticles Using Quadrature Method Of Moments, Elsayed Abdelfatah, Maysam Pournik
Modeling Of Aggregation And Gelation Of Nanoparticles Using Quadrature Method Of Moments, Elsayed Abdelfatah, Maysam Pournik
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Applications of Nanotechnology are growing significantly in the petroleum industry such as oil recovery, and well stimulation. In aqueous media, silica nanoparticles aggregate if there is sufficient attractive energy between nanoparticles. Aggregate size distribution evolves as aggregation continues, and once it spans the space, it forms a gel. The objective of this study is to study the aggregation and gelation kinetics in the batch. Population Balance equation (PBE) is used to model the kinetics of aggregation. Quadrature method of moments (QMOM) is used to convert the PBE with continuous distribution of nanoparticle size into a set of moment equations for …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Pumping of fluids with precise control is one of the key components in a microfluidic device. The electric field has been used as one of the most popular and efficient nonmechanical pumping mechanism to transport fluids in microchannels from the very early stage of microfluidic technology development. This review presents fundamental physics and theories of the different microscale phenomena that arise due to the application of an electric field in fluids, which can be applied for pumping of fluids in microdevices. Specific mechanisms considered in this report are electroosmosis, AC electroosmosis, AC electrothermal, induced charge electroosmosis, traveling wave dielectrophoresis, and …

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen, is highly susceptible to developing resistance to multiple antibiotics. The gene encoding aspartyl-tRNA synthetase (AspRS) from P. aeruginosa was cloned and the resulting protein characterized. AspRS was kinetically evaluated, and the KM values for aspartic acid, ATP, and tRNA were 170, 495, and 0.5 μM, respectively. AspRS was developed into a screening platform using scintillation proximity assay (SPA) technology and used to screen 1690 chemical compounds, resulting in the identification of two inhibitory compounds, BT02A02 and BT02C05. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined against nine clinically relevant bacterial strains, including efflux pump …

Tailoring Bismuth Oxide Flower-, Bowtie- And Brushwood-Like Structures Through Microfluidic Synthesis, Srbuhi A. Yolchinyan, Mkhitar A. Hobosyan, Karen S. Martirosyan
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Bismuth oxide structures resembling flowers, bowties and brushwood-like assemblies were successfully produced utilizing microfluidic synthesis approach. The molecular length of surfactant polyethylene glycol (PEG) was critical in shaping the particle morphology, while the laminar flow in micro-channels assured the complete structures without breakage. The PEG with 200 Molecular Weight (MW) assists to produce 1–2 μm flower-like structures, while the PEG with 8000 MW yields to the highly crystalline bowtie and brushwood-like structures with up to 60 μm size. The particle morphology examination along microfluidic network coupled with fluid dynamics calculations showed that the complex structures are completed at the …

The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the event GW170817, the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star component will add to the contribution from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. In the Advanced LIGO-Virgo frequency band most sensitive to stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), we predict a total astrophysical background with amplitude ΩGW(f=25 Hz)=1.8-1.3+2.7×10-9 with …

The Easter Island ecoregion includes Rapa Nui (Easter Island; RN), with a human population of ~5600, and the uninhabited Salas y Gómez (SyG). Although the culture and terrestrial ecology of RN have been well studied, we know little about the marine environment of these islands, particularly the interplay among herbivores, algae, and corals, and how coral reef communities differ between islands, by wave energy exposure, and between depths. To address the potential roles of herbivores, wave-energy exposure, and depth on the sessile benthic communities, we examined herbivorous fish biomass, sea urchin (Diadema savignyi) density, and algal and coral …

We report the discovery and initial follow-up of a double neutron star (DNS) system, PSR J1946+2052, with the Arecibo L-Band Feed Array pulsar (PALFA) survey. PSR J1946+2052 is a 17 ms pulsar in a 1.88 hr, eccentric (e = 0.06) orbit with a 1.2 M o companion. We have used the Jansky Very Large Array to localize PSR J1946+2052 to a precision of 0.″09 using a new phase binning mode. We have searched multiwavelength catalogs for coincident sources but did not find any counterparts. The improved position enabled a measurement of the spin period derivative of the pulsar (P = …
Cartan Frames And Algebras With Links To Integrable Systems Differential Equations And Surfaces, Paul Bracken
Cartan Frames And Algebras With Links To Integrable Systems Differential Equations And Surfaces, Paul Bracken
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Moving frames and Clifford algebras will be used to illustrate an interconnected approach to the study of integrable systems, their surfaces, and methods for producing integrable partial differential equations. After a system of one-forms is defined, moving frame equations can be integrated and the resulting equations for the surface can be obtained. Other differential equations which involve quantities relevant to the surface are obtained. For the case of minimal and constant mean curvature surfaces, the coordinate functions can be calculated in closed form. In the case of constant mean curvature, they can be expressed in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions.

Coupled bed-flow direct numerical simulations investigating the early stages of pattern formation and bedform (ripple) interactions were examined in a previous paper (Part 1), making use of the resolved flow field. In this paper (Part 2), we compare our results to published experimental data and provide an extensive quantitative analysis of the bed using spectral analysis and two-point correlations. The effect of the mobile rippled bed on the flow structure and turbulence is investigated locally (at specific streamwise locations) and over the entire computational domain. We show that developing ripples attain a self-similar profile in both the shape and the …

We present results of coupled direct numerical simulations between flow and a deformable bed in a horizontally periodic, turbulent open channel at a shear Reynolds number of Reτ = 180. The feedback between the temporally and spatially evolving bed and the flow is enforced via the immersed boundary method. Using the near-bed flow field, we provide evidence on the role of locally intense near-bed vortical structures during the early stages of bed formation, from the emergence of quasi-streamwise streaks to the formation of incipient bedform crestlines. Additionally, we take a new look at a number of defect-related bedform interactions, …

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent organic pollutants that remain a human health concern with newly discovered sources of contamination and ongoing bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Children exposed during early brain development are at highest risk of neurological deficits, but highly exposed adults reportedly have an increased risk of Parkinson's disease. Our previous studies found allelic differences in the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) affect sensitivity to developmental PCB exposure, resulting in cognitive deficits and motor dysfunction. High-affinity Ahr b Cyp1a2(-/-) mice were most sensitive compared with poor-affinity Ahr d Cyp1a2(-/-) and wild-type Ahr b Cyp1a2(+/+) mice. Our follow-up …

Efficient data dissemination in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is a challenging issue due to the dynamic nature of the network. To improve the performance of data dissemination, we study distributed data replication algorithms in VANETs for exchanging information and computing in an arbitrarily-connected network of vehicle nodes. To achieve low dissemination delay and improve the network performance, we control the number of message copies that can be disseminated in the network and then propose an efficient distributed data replication algorithm (EDDA). The key idea is to let the data carrier distribute the data dissemination tasks to multiple nodes to …

Nonreciprocal Localization Of Photons, Hamidreza Ramezani, Pankaj K. Jha, Yuan Wang, Xiang Zhang
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
We demonstrate that it is possible to localize photons nonreciprocally in a moving photonic lattice made by spatiotemporally modulating the atomic response, where the dispersion acquires a spectral Doppler shift with respect to the probe direction. A static defect placed in such a moving lattice produces a spatial localization of light in the band gap with a shifting frequency that depends on the direction of incident field with respect to the moving lattice. This phenomenon has an impact not only in photonics but also in broader areas such as condensed matter and acoustics, opening the doors for designing new devices …

We present results from the first directed search for nontensorial gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for tensorial (plus and cross) modes only, a generic metric theory may, in principle, predict waves with up to six different polarizations. This analysis is sensitive to continuous signals of scalar, vector, or tensor polarizations, and does not rely on any specific theory of gravity. After searching data from the first observation run of the advanced LIGO detectors for signals at twice the rotational frequency of 200 known pulsars, we find no evidence of gravitational waves of any polarization. We report the first upper …

This survey research examined social networking sites (SNS) internal to the company to determine how SNS use affects attitudes, and ultimately turnover intentions. We hypothesize that due to social capital, emotional dissonance, and conservation of resource theories, work SNS use will decrease work isolation, which will decrease work-related attitudes and increase turnover intentions. Due to social capital theory, we propose that work SNS use will decrease work isolation. Due to emotional dissonance theory, we hypothesize that work isolation will decrease positive emotions and job satisfaction, and increase job tensions, such as work stress. All three of these factors will increase …

A Two-Dimensional Finite Element Model Of The Grain Boundary Based On Thermo-Mechanical Strain Gradient Plasticity, Yooseob Song, George Z. Voyiadjis
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
In this work, a two-dimensional finite element model for the grain boundary flow rule is developed based on the thermo-mechanical gradient-enhanced plasticity theory. The proposed model is temperature-dependent. A special attention is given to physical and micromechanical nature of dislocation interactions in combination with thermal activation on stored and dissipated energy. Thermodynamic conjugate microforces are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. Correspondingly, two different grain boundary material length scales are present in the proposed model. Finally, numerical examples are solved in order to explore characteristics of the proposed grain boundary flow rule.

The hydration of cement can release a substantial amount of heat that can be problematic in mass concrete structure. This heat of hydration (HH) can produce thermal stresses that can crack the concrete and compromise the integrity of the structure leading to its failure. Throughout the years, different methods have been developed in order to mitigate the negative effects of the HH on mass concrete structures. This study presents a comprehensive review of the previous methods documented in the literature that have been utilized in controlling the temperature rise due to the HH in mass concreting. The reviewed methods were …

Hermatypic corals flourished on reefs in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) in the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. Today, many of these relict reefs are mesophotic banks that have unique coral assemblages and provide critical habitat; however, the South Texas Banks (STB) lack quantitative surveys. Therefore, we used a remotely operated vehicle to conduct quantitative surveys of 5 banks: Baker, Aransas, Dream, Blackfish Ridge, and Harte. Coral communities, based on estimated coral densities (colonies/m2), significantly differed among banks for terraces, slopes, and overall (combined terrace and slope) communities for most banks examined. Within banks, terrace and slope communities significantly differed …

Myripristis chryseres Jordan & Evermann, 1903, is recorded for the first time in the Easter Island Ecoregion. Two specimens were observed swimming along a rock cliff and entering a cavern at ∼163 m depth near the peak of Pukao seamount, located ∼85 km (46 nm) west of Easter Island. This report expands the geographic range of M. chryseres eastward by ∼3,800 km and is the first report of the species for the eastern Pacific. It is unclear whether this new record is indicative of a relatively recent range expansion or a lack of visual surveys in the region, which …
