Chemical stressors are pervasive, affecting both terrestrial and aquatic environments. The continual influx of these toxins is damaging ecosystems and the organisms that inhabit them. The abundance of environmental toxins makes aquatic habitats inhospitable for aquatic life. These chemical stressors consistently disrupt the life processes of aquatic organisms, particularly their physiological functions. This study examined on the effects of environmentally relevant pesticides mixture (low-dose and high-dose: S-metolachlor: 2.4 go/L, 12 μg/L; linuron: 2.0 μg/L, 10 μg/L; isoproturon: 1.2 μg/L, 6.0 μg/L; tebucanozole: 1.2 μg/L, 6.0 μg/L; aclonifen: 0.8 μg/L, 4.0 μg/L; atrazine: 0.4 μg/L, 2.0 μg/L; pendimethalin: 0.4 μg/L, 2.0 …

Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). To implement best conservation practices for this species, its biology should be well understood. Attempting to characterize the foraging physiology of free-ranging hawksbill sea turtles is complicated by the fact that sampling is typically limited to nesting females during the reproductive season. Without data from non-reproductive periods, it is difficult to determine whether observed physiological values reflect baseline conditions or are specific to the energetically demanding nesting season. Accordingly, in this study, we described the physiology of foraging in …

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a powerful and sensitive method for monitoring aquatic and terrestrial organisms, offering insights into their distribution. Usually, eDNA is collected using a filter membrane through water filtration. However, the passive eDNA method can simplify sampling and broaden its scope, offering new insights for ecological surveillance. This study examined the efficacy of six different membrane filters in detecting the yellow mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens) through a novel passive eDNA method. After being immersed in water for 12 h, only the mixed cellulose ester (MCE) membrane filter consistently demonstrated specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification using …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we are concerned with integrable semi- and fully discrete analogues of the massive Thirring model in light core coordinates. By using the Hirota’s bilinear approach and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction method, we propose both the semi- and fully discrete massive Thirring models and construct their multi-bright soliton solutions.

The Bahia Grande is a 6,500—acre tidal basin located at the southernmost tip of Texas. Tidal flow into this coastal estuary was cut off in the 1930s, causing the basin to dry up for ~70 y. A pilot channel connecting the Bahia Grande to tidal waters was constructed in 2005, allowing flooding of the basin to occur. Throughout the period reported herein (2005–2019), the system remained characterized by persistent spatial and temporal episodes of extreme hypersalinity (>70)—a critical factor influencing estuarine community composition and driving key ecological processes. With additional rehabilitation actions forthcoming, characterization of the estuary is essential …

Sinkhole formation poses a significant geohazard in karst regions, where unpredictable subsurface erosion often necessitates costly grouting for stabilization. Accurate estimation of grout volume remains a persistent challenge due to spatial variability, site-specific conditions, and the limitations of traditional empirical methods. This study introduces a novel machine learning-based regression model for grout volume prediction that integrates cone penetration test (CPT)-derived Sinkhole Resistance Ratio (SRR) values, spatial correlations between CPT and grouting points (GPs), and field-recorded grout volumes from six sinkhole sites in Florida. Three data transformation methods, the Proximal Allocation Method (PAM), the Equitable Distribution Method (EDM), and the Threshold-based …
Computational Expressions Of Void Reactions In Extended Chemical Reaction Network Models, Aiden J. Massie
Computational Expressions Of Void Reactions In Extended Chemical Reaction Network Models, Aiden J. Massie
Theses and Dissertations
Chemical Reaction Networks (CRNs) are a system of abstraction of real-world chemical dynamics. Each CRN system is defined as a pair of molecular species and reaction rules, which consume a set of reactant species and create a new set of product species. In this paper, we investigate the simple class of void reactions, which cannot create new species and are computationally weak with small-enough sizes in basic CRNs. Here, we study their computational expression in more powerful extended CRN models. Specifically, we consider the Step CRN model, in which new species are added into the system through a sequence of …

Interactions Between Black, Brown, Blue And Green Carbon From Terrestrial To Marine Ecosystems: A Critical Review, Allison White, Richard Kline, Md. Saydur Rahman
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Black and brown carbon are byproducts of the incomplete combustion of biomass or fossil fuels. These light-absorbing aerosols influence climate by altering the radiative balance through the absorption and scattering of sunlight, exacerbating global climate change. Their subsequent deposition on terrestrial and marine environments affects surface albedo, snow and ice melt, and biogeochemical processes, leading to further environmental consequences. In contrast, green and blue carbon refer to carbon stored in terrestrial vegetation and marine ecosystems, respectively. These ecosystems play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by sequestering atmospheric carbon; however, they are increasingly threatened by climatic disturbances, anthropogenic activities, …
Influence Of Peer-Led Team Learning In Students’ Chemistry Self-Efficacy, And Academic Achievement In General Chemistry Courses, Hector Leal
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most perplexing issues facing peer cooperative learning is dealing with student motivation and goal orientation. Sometimes the students who could most benefit from the positive effects of peer learning are the ones least likely to participate due to fear of exposing their academic weaknesses to others or even to themselves (Arendale, 2020). Exploring the complexity of student motivation is being carefully studied amongst elementary and secondary education student populations. However, this important construct is often ignored in the study of postsecondary education in general, and the provision of learning assistance, particularly at the college level. My purpose …

With the increasing adoption of deep learning classification models in the medical domain, a critical challenge remains: achieving high predictive accuracy while maintaining clinical Inter-pretability. This study examines how model architecture, dataset origin, and the use of full versus subset data affect both classification performance and Interpretability in Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis. ResNet18 is evaluated using an open-source ECG Image Dataset, thus a custom dataset derived from digitized ECG images. Post-hoc explainability methods, such as Integrated Gradients, are applied to determine which time steps have the most significant influence on model decisions. The findings demonstrate that model architecture and dataset …
Efficient Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Large-Scale Time Series Classification, Kevin Garcia
Efficient Self-Supervised Representation Learning For Large-Scale Time Series Classification, Kevin Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, there has been a significant advancement in designing Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) frameworks for time series data to reduce the dependency on data labels. Among these works, hierarchical contrastive learning-based SSL frameworks, which learn representations by contrasting data embeddings at multiple resolutions, have gained considerable attention. Due to their ability to gather more information, they exhibit better generalization in various downstream tasks. However, when the time series data length is significant long, the computational cost is often significantly higher than that of other SSL frameworks. In this paper, to address this challenge, we propose an efficient way to train hierarchical …
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Interpretable Alignment Of Textual Weather Reports With Local Sensor Time Series For Extreme Weather Event Visualization, Juan Luis Garza
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an automated and interpretable pipeline that links natural-language weather narratives with local meteorological sensor time series. Using large language models, NOAA-style event reports are transformed into structured records capturing event type, timing, descriptive context, and uncertainty. Each extracted event is aligned with harmonized temperature, precipitation, and wind measurements from nearby weather stations, enabling systematic comparisons between narrative evidence and observed atmospheric conditions.
Across roughly fifty stations and more than two thousand events, the analyses show that discrepancies between narrative descriptions and sensor behavior arise primarily from spatial separation rather than from temporal offsets, sensor preprocessing artifacts, or …

In the next part, we study models of molecular computation, where we consider the problem of reachability in Chemical Reaction Networks and similar model extensions. The final part is a game-complexity analysis of Celtic! and k-ago, …
Ai-Driven Electromagnetic Design And Performance Prediction Of Microstrip Antennas, Eduardo Javier Vazquez
Ai-Driven Electromagnetic Design And Performance Prediction Of Microstrip Antennas, Eduardo Javier Vazquez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the application of Deep Learning to automate and accelerate microstrip antenna inverse design. The initial investigation was to predict microstrip antenna performance from its geometry parametric input, and found out that forward prediction with adopted geometric representation results in ill-posed scenario, high ambiguity and unstable mapping. The study later mostly focuses on the inverse prediction by machine learning from S11 parameter input to predict antenna patch geometry parameters instead.
A dataset of 5,000 ANSYS HFSS simulated antennas (later filtered to 4,136 valid samples) was generated using cubic spine -described geometry profiles. Multiple neural architectures were adopted for …
