Evaluating The Impacts Of Dam Construction And Longshore Transport Upon Modern Sedimentation Within The Rio Grande Delta (Texas, U.S.A.), Samantha Moore, Elizabeth A. Heise, Marty Grove, Anthony Reisinger, Jude A. Benavides

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The modern Rio Grande delta system has experienced a century of dam construction, water removal for irrigation and municipal use, and land use modifications that have dramatically reduced its sediment load. This study examines whether damming has sufficiently limited delivery of upstream sediment to permit locally eroded sources and/or littoral transport along the coast to influence the provenance signal of the Rio Grande delta. Changes in sediment provenance within the Rio Grande’s delta can be detected and quantified by measurement of detrital zircon Uranium–lead dating age distributions. Previous provenance studies indicate that modern Rio Grande river sand upstream of Falcon …

Truck Platooning In The U.S. National Road Network: A System-Level Modeling Approach, Mohamadhossein Noruzoliaee, Bo Zou, Yan (Joann) Zhou

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Truck platooning enables a group of trucks to move close together, which helps reduce truck fuel use and increase effective road capacity. In this paper, a system-level equilibrium model is developed to characterize spontaneous truck platooning with coexistence of non-platooning vehicles in a network, by explicitly accounting for the interlocking relationship among platoon formation time, truck fuel saving, and increase in effective road capacity. To equilibrate the relationships, an algorithm is proposed which involves a diagonalization approach and a bush-based algorithm to solve decomposed subproblems. The condition of proportionality is imposed to obtain unique traffic flows for each class of …

Covert Computation In Staged Self-Assembly: Verification Is Pspace-Complete, David Caballero, Timothy Gomez, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie Jan 2021

Covert Computation In Staged Self-Assembly: Verification Is Pspace-Complete, David Caballero, Timothy Gomez, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Staged self-assembly has proven to be a powerful abstract model of self-assembly by modeling laboratory techniques where several nanoscale systems are allowed to assemble separately and then be mixed at a later stage. A fundamental problem in self-assembly is Unique Assembly Verification (UAV), which asks whether a single final assembly is uniquely constructed. This has previously been shown to be Π^{p}₂-hard in staged self-assembly with a constant number of stages, but a more precise complexity classification was left open related to the polynomial hierarchy.
Covert Computation was recently introduced as a way to compute a function while hiding the input …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Agn Jets And A Fanciful Trio Of Black Holes In The Abell 85 Brightest Cluster Galaxy, Juan P. Madrid

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A new radio map of the Abell 85 Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) was obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. With a resolution of 002, this radio image shows two kiloparsec-scale bipolar active galactic nucleus jets emanating from the active galactic nucleus of the A85 BCG. The galaxy core appears as a single entity on the new radio map. It has been assumed that the A85 BCG contained a binary black hole in its core. However, Chandra X-ray data and the new high-resolution radio map show no evidence that the A85 BCG harbors a binary black hole. The …

Noise due to scattered light has been a frequent disturbance in the advanced LIGO gravitational wave detectors, hindering the detection of gravitational waves. The non stationary scatter noise caused by low frequency motion can be recognized as arches in the time-frequency plane of the gravitational wave channel. In this paper, we characterize the scattering noise for LIGO and Virgo's third observing run O3 from April, 2019 to March, 2020. We find at least two different populations of scattering noise and we investigate the multiple origins of one of them as well as its mitigation. We find that relative motion between …

The imposition and lifting of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to avert the COVID19 pandemic have gained popularity worldwide and will continue to be enforced until herd immunity is achieved. We developed a linear regression model to ascertain the nexus between the time-varying reproduction number averaged over a time window of six days (Rts) and seven NPIs: contact tracing, quarantine efforts, social distancing and health checks, hand hygiene, wearing of facemasks, lockdown and isolation, and health-related supports. Our analysis suggests that the second wave that emerged in Sri Lanka in early October 2020 continued despite numerous NPIs. The model indicates that the …

Search For Continuous Gravitational-Wave Signals In Pulsar Timing Residuals: A New Scalable Approach With Diffusive Nested Sampling, Yu-Yang Songsheng, Yi-Qian Qian, Yan-Rong Li, Pu Du, Jie-Wen Chen, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty, Jian-Min Wang

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Detecting continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) generated by individual close binaries of supermassive black holes (CB-SMBHs) is one of the primary objectives of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The detection sensitivity is slated to increase significantly as the number of well-timed millisecond pulsars will increase by more than an order of magnitude with the advent of next-generation radio telescopes. Currently, the Bayesian analysis pipeline using parallel tempering Markov Chain Monte Carlo has been applied in multiple studies for CB-SMBH searches, but it may be challenged by the high dimensionality of the parameter space for future large-scale PTAs. One solution is to …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a new analysis of the profile data from the 47 millisecond pulsars comprising the 12.5 yr data set of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves, which is presented in a parallel paper (Alam et al., hereafter NG12.5). Our reprocessing is performed using “wideband” timing methods, which use frequency-dependent template profiles, simultaneous time-of-arrival (TOA) and dispersion measure (DM) measurements from broadband observations, and novel analysis techniques. In particular, the wideband DM measurements are used to constrain the DM portion of the timing model. We compare the ensemble timing results to those in NG12.5 by examining the …

Hexagon Tilings Of The Plane That Are Not Edge-To-Edge, D. Frettlöh, Alexey Glazyrin, Z. Lángi Jan 2021

Hexagon Tilings Of The Plane That Are Not Edge-To-Edge, D. Frettlöh, Alexey Glazyrin, Z. Lángi

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

An irregular vertex in a tiling by polygons is a vertex of one tile and belongs to the interior of an edge of another tile. In this paper we show that for any integer k≥3, there exists a normal tiling of the Euclidean plane by convex hexagons of unit area with exactly k irregular vertices. Using the same approach we show that there are normal edge-to-edge tilings of the plane by hexagons of unit area and exactly k many n-gons (n>6) of unit area. A result of Akopyan yields an upper bound for k depending on the maximal diameter …

Combining Assumptions And Graphical Network Into Gene Expression Data Analysis, Demba Fofana, E. O. George, Dale Brown Jan 2021

Combining Assumptions And Graphical Network Into Gene Expression Data Analysis, Demba Fofana, E. O. George, Dale Brown

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Analyzing gene expression data rigorously requires taking assumptions into consideration but also relies on using information about network relations that exist among genes. Combining these different elements cannot only improve statistical power, but also provide a better framework through which gene expression can be properly analyzed.

Material and methods

We propose a novel statistical model that combines assumptions and gene network information into the analysis. Assumptions are important since every test statistic is valid only when required assumptions hold. So, we propose hybrid p-values and show that, under the null hypothesis of primary interest, these p-values are …

Communities develop social languages in which utterances take on culturally specific situated meanings. As physics students interact in their classroom, they can learn the broader physics community’s social language by co-constructing meanings with their instructors. We provide an exposition of a systematic and productive use of idiosyncratic, socially acquired language in two classroom communities that we consider to be subcultures of the broader community of physicists. We perform a discourse analysis on twelve quantum mechanics students, two instructors, and the course text related to statements about basis and change of basis within a spin-½ probability problem. We classify the utterances’ …

Schrödinger-Poisson Systems With Singular Potential And Critical Exponent, Senli Liu, Haibo Chen, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article we study the Schrödinger-Poisson system−∆ u+ V (| x|) u+ λφu= f (u), x∈ R3,−∆ φ= u2, x∈ R3, where V is a singular potential with the parameter α and the nonlinearity f satisfies critical growth. By applying a generalized version of Lions-type theorem and the Nehari manifold theory, we establish the existence of the nonnegative ground state solution when λ= 0. By the perturbation method, we obtain a nontrivial solution to above system when λ= 0.

Hardness Of Reconfiguring Robot Swarms With Uniform External Control In Limited Directions, David Caballero, Angel A. Cantu, Timothy Gomez, Austin Luchsinger, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Motivated by advances is nanoscale applications and simplistic robot agents, we look at problems based on using a global signal to move all agents when given a limited number of directional signals and immovable geometry. We study a model where unit square particles move within a 2D grid based on uniform external forces. Movement is based on a sequence of uniform commands which cause all particles to move 1 step in a specific direction. The 2D grid board additionally contains \blocked" spaces which prevent particles from entry. Within this model, we investigate the complexity of deciding 1) whether a target …

Exponential And Hypoexponential Distributions: Some Characterizations, George Yanev Dec 2020

Exponential And Hypoexponential Distributions: Some Characterizations, George Yanev

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The (general) hypoexponential distribution is the distribution of a sum of independent exponential random variables. We consider the particular case when the involved exponential variables have distinct rate parameters. We prove that the following converse result is true. If for some n ≥ 2, X1, X2, . . . , Xn are independent copies of a random variable X with unknown distribution F and a specific linear combination of Xj ’s has hypoexponential distribution, then F is exponential. Thus, we obtain new characterizations of the exponential distribution. As corollaries of the main results, we extend some previous characterizations established recently …

Size tunable nanoparticles (NPs) have played an important role in areas of optoelectronics, drug delivery, magnetism and many others. Moreover, designing size-tunable NPs without exposing them to high temperature and long time thermal treatment is highly desirable to make agglomerate- and defect-free NPs. In this work, we have designed Gd2Hf2O7:Eu3+ (GHOE) NPs using the molten-salt synthesis (MSS) method with the precursors made from varying precipitant concentrations (correspondingly the pH of the precipitating solution). The obtained NPs have a decreasing size as the pH of the precipitating solution rises and a defect fluorite structure with a large fraction of Eu3+ ions …
