Behavior Of Entanglement Entropy Near Periodic Orbits In A Hamiltonian Dynamical System, Paul Bracken
Behavior Of Entanglement Entropy Near Periodic Orbits In A Hamiltonian Dynamical System, Paul Bracken
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Entanglement entropy growth is studied under a form of dynamics that is based on iteration. This approach allows the investigation of the role of decoherence in producing increases of entropy. This has important consequences as far as the study of decoherence is concerned. It is indicated that results are generally independent of Hilbert space partitioning. It is seen that a deep relationship between classical dynamical entropy and the growth of entanglement entropy exists in this kind of model. The former acts to bound the latter and in the asymptotic region, they tend to a common limit.
Enhancing Student Learning Of Global Warming Through Reflective Writing, Liang Zeng, Guang Zeng
Enhancing Student Learning Of Global Warming Through Reflective Writing, Liang Zeng, Guang Zeng
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The National Academy of Science has published studies showing strong scientific evidence that global warming is caused by human consumption of fossil fuels, yet recent surveys have shown young adults in the U.S. are disengaged or disagree with this fact. Accordingly, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published learning objectives to educate the world population on global warming and renewable energy by 2030. In this paper, we introduce a reflective writing activity physics educators can employ to foster a deeper understanding of global warming in introductory college physics and physical science courses, without overloading their teaching time.

Twisted laminar superconducting composite structures based on multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) yarns were crafted by integrating magnesium and boron homogeneous mixture into the carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogel sheets. After the ignition of the Mg–B–MWCNT system, under the controlled argon environment, the high exothermic reaction between magnesium (Mg) and boron (B) with stoichiometric ratio produced the MgB2@MWCNT superconducting composite yarns. The process was conducted under the controlled argon environment and uniform heating rate in the differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyzer. The XRD analysis confirmed that the produced composite yarns contain nano and microscale inclusions of superconducting phase of MgB2. The …

Background: Anticipating an initial shortage of vaccines for COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States developed priority vaccine allocations for specific demographic groups in the population. This study evaluates the performance of the CDC vaccine allocation strategy with respect to multiple potentially competing vaccination goals (minimizing mortality, cases, infections, and years of life lost (YLL)), under the same framework as the CDC allocation: four priority vaccination groups and population demographics stratified by age, comorbidities, occupation and living condition (congested or non-congested).
Methods and findings: We developed a compartmental disease model that incorporates key elements of the …

Subharmonic Resonance Of One Fourth Order Of Electrostatically Actuated Mems Circular Plates: Amplitude-Frequency Response, Dumitru Caruntu, Julio Beatriz, Miguel Martinez
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
This work deals with the amplitude-frequency response subharmonic resonance of 1/4 order of electrostatically actuated circular plates. The method of multiple scales is used to model the hard excitations and to predict the response. This work predicts that the steady state solutions are zero amplitude solutions, and non-zero amplitude solutions which consist of stable and unstable branches. The effects of parameters such as voltage and damping on the response are predicted. As the voltage increases, the non-zero amplitude solutions are shifted to lower frequencies. As the damping increases, the non-zero steady-state amplitudes are shifted to higher amplitudes, so larger initial …

Lignin, Sugar, And Furan Production Of Industrial Hemp Biomass Via An Integrated Process, Jikai Zhao, Jason Griffin, Kraig Roozeboom, Juhee Lee, Donghai Wang
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Traditional pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is often accompanied by washing and disposal of wastewater, which leads to overuse of water and loss of by-products. The objectives of this study were to validate the potential of an acid-base integrated process for simultaneous sugars, furans, and lignin production without washing and wastewater discarding. The difference in conversion performance among different biomass resources was also demonstrated. Parallel acetic acid (HOAc, pH = 2.25) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH, pH = 13.46) pretreatments followed by solid and liquid integration were applied to four genotypes of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) biomass that were harvested …

Covering By Homothets And Illuminating Convex Bodies, Alexey Glazyrin
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The paper is devoted to coverings by translative homothets and illuminations of convex bodies. For a given positive number α and a convex body B, gα(B) is the infimum of α-powers of finitely many homothety coefficients less than 1 such that there is a covering of B by translative homothets with these coefficients. hα(B) is the minimal number of directions such that the boundary of B can be illuminated by this number of directions except for a subset whose Hausdorff dimension is less than α. In this paper, we prove that gα(B)≤hα(B), find upper and lower bounds for both numbers, …

After the detection of gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences, the search for transient gravitational-wave signals with less well-defined waveforms for which matched filtering is not well suited is one of the frontiers for gravitational-wave astronomy. Broadly classified into "short" less than or similar to 1 s and "long" greater than or similar to 1 s duration signals, these signals are expected from a variety of astrophysical processes, including non-axisymmetric deformations in magnetars or eccentric binary black hole coalescences. In this work, we present a search for long-duration gravitational-wave transients from Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo's third observing run from …

We performed a detailed analysis of the detectability of a wide range of gravitational waves derived from core-collapse supernova simulations using gravitational-wave detector noise scaled to the sensitivity of the upcoming fourth and fifth observing runs of the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo, and KAGRA. We use the coherent WaveBurst algorithm, which was used in the previous observing runs to search for gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae. As coherent WaveBurst makes minimal assumptions on the morphology of a gravitational-wave signal, it can play an important role in the first detection of gravitational waves from an event in the Milky Way. We …

Theoretical model for the simulation of synthesis of Janus-like particles (JP) consisting two different phases using the Carbon Combustion Synthesis of Oxides (CCSO) is presented. The model includes the variation of sample initial porosity, carbon concentration and oxygen flow rate used to predict the formation of JP features. The two temperature (2T) combustion model of chemically active submicron-dispersed mixture of two phases including ferroelectric and ferromagnetic was implemented and assessed by using the experimentally estimated activation energy of 112±3.3 kJ/mol and combustion temperature. The experimental values allowed to account the thermal and concentration expansion effect along with the dispersion by …

Optimal Quantization For Mixed Distributions, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
Optimal Quantization For Mixed Distributions, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The basic goal of quantization for probability distribution is to reduce the number of values, which is typically uncountable, describing a probability distribution to some finite set and thus approximation of a continuous probability distribution by a discrete distribution. Mixed distributions are an exciting new area for optimal quantization. In this paper, we have determined the optimal sets of n -means, the n th quantization errors, and the quantization dimensions of different mixed distributions. Besides, we have discussed whether the quantization coefficients for the mixed distributions exist. The results in this paper will give a motivation and insight into more …

One of the main priorities of marine scientific research is to provide practical information and guidance for biodiversity conservation and management. In this context, the identification of key and fragile habitat-forming species is particularly important. Despite their ecological importance, whip corals in the order Antipatharia remain poorly studied around the world, and especially in the South Pacific. During recent expeditions to explore mesophotic and deep benthic habitats around Rapa Nui (Easter Island), dense assemblages of whip black corals were observed in situ. We here report the first detailed description of the distribution and abundance of these black coral assemblages …

This paper presents the results of a search for generic short-duration gravitational-wave transients in data from the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. Transients with durations of milliseconds to a few seconds in the 24–4096 Hz frequency band are targeted by the search, with no assumptions made regarding the incoming signal direction, polarization, or morphology. Gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences that have been identified by other targeted analyses are detected, but no statistically significant evidence for other gravitational wave bursts is found. Sensitivities to a variety of signals are presented. These include updated upper limits on …

Technique To Solve Linear Fractional Differential Equations Using B-Polynomials Bases, Muhammad I. Bhatti, Md. Habibur Rahman
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
A multidimensional, modified, fractional-order B-polys technique was implemented for finding solutions of linear fractional-order partial differential equations. To calculate the results of the linear Fractional Partial Differential Equations (FPDE), the sum of the product of fractional B-polys and the coefficients was employed. Moreover, minimization of error in the coefficients was found by employing the Galerkin method. Before the Galerkin method was applied, the linear FPDE was transformed into an operational matrix equation that was inverted to provide the values of the unknown coefficients in the approximate solution. A valid multidimensional solution was determined when an appropriate number of basis sets …

Projections of climate change impacts on marine ecosystems have revealed long-term declines in global marine animal biomass and unevenly distributed impacts on fisheries. Here we apply an enhanced suite of global marine ecosystem models from the Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (Fish-MIP), forced by new-generation Earth system model outputs from Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), to provide insights into how projected climate change will affect future ocean ecosystems. Compared with the previous generation CMIP5-forced Fish-MIP ensemble, the new ensemble ecosystem simulations show a greater decline in mean global ocean animal biomass under both strong-mitigation …

The 1927 SIR contagion model is the dynamical system for an infection that passes at a constant rate in random pairwise meetings. Our Behavioral SI* Model assumes that everyone has access to a constant elasticity of avoidance technology. We then derive the passing rate in fully solvable Nash equilibrium of the game where everyone optimizes. The resulting dynamics are log-linear, and incidence is log-linear in prevalence, with slope less than one.
The SI* models yields extreme predictions for major contagions, not realized. At breakout, the SI* models capture exponential growth. In our BSI* model, increasing avoidance behavior bends the curve, …

Principal points were first introduced in 1990: for a positive integer n, n principal points of a random variable are the n points that minimize the mean squared distance between the random variable and the nearest of the n points. In this paper, we give a high precision numerical method for calculating the n principal points and the n th quantization errors for all positive integers n. For some absolutely continuous univariate distributions, we calculate the n principal points for different n using Newton’s method. Additionally, we also provide the corresponding values of mean squared distances.

Background: There is huge variability in the way that individuals with tinnitus respond to interventions. These experiential variations, together with a range of associated etiologies, contribute to tinnitus being a highly heterogeneous condition. Despite this heterogeneity, a “one size fits all” approach is taken when making management recommendations. Although there are various management approaches, not all are equally effective. Psychological approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy have the most evidence base. Managing tinnitus is challenging due to the significant variations in tinnitus experiences and treatment successes. Tailored interventions based on individual tinnitus profiles may improve outcomes. Predictive models of treatment …

Climate change is warming the ocean and impacting lower trophic level (LTL) organisms. Marine ecosystem models can provide estimates of how these changes will propagate to larger animals and impact societal services such as fisheries, but at present these estimates vary widely. A better understanding of what drives this inter-model variation will improve our ability to project fisheries and other ecosystem services into the future, while also helping to identify uncertainties in process understanding. Here, we explore the mechanisms that underlie the diversity of responses to changes in temperature and LTLs in eight global marine ecosystem models from the Fisheries …

The increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in today’s classrooms calls for science teachers to facilitate science learning for all students. Drawing from a sociocultural framework that values diverse students’ cultures and languages, a translanguaging pedagogy has been identified as one way to help linguistically diverse students develop science concepts. A meta-synthesis of studies exploring translanguaging pedagogy in science classrooms was conducted to create a framework for the competencies needed by science teachers to incorporate a translanguaging pedagogy in their instruction. The resulting framework consists of six competencies: (1) The teacher should know pedagogical methods on how to teach bilingual students, …

We present results of three wide-band directed searches for continuous gravitational waves from 15 young supernova remnants in the first half of the third Advanced LIGO and Virgo observing run. We use three search pipelines with distinct signal models and methods of identifying noise artifacts. Without ephemerides of these sources, the searches are conducted over a fRequency band spanning from 10 to 2 kHz. We find no evidence of continuous gravitational radiation from these sources. We set upper limits on the intrinsic signal strain at 95% confidence level in sample subbands, estimate the sensitivity in the full band, and derive …

We present a search for continuous gravitational-wave emission due to r-modes in the pulsar PSR J0537-6910 using data from the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration observing run O3. PSR J0537-6910 is a young energetic X-ray pulsar and is the most frequent glitcher known. The inter-glitch braking index of the pulsar suggests that gravitational-wave emission due to r-mode oscillations may play an important role in the spin evolution of this pulsar. Theoretical models confirm this possibility and predict emission at a level that can be probed by ground-based detectors. In order to explore this scenario, we search for r-mode emission in the epochs between …

Synthesis Of Alkylthio Benzene Derivatives Via Simultaneous Diazotization And Nucleophilic Displacement, Abraham Alvarado, Juan D. Deleija, Jose J. Gutierrez
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
Alkylthio benzene derivatives were effectively synthesized by simultaneous diazotization of aromatic amines and nucleophilic displacement. The method is fairly general and proceeds in moderate yields. Product yields were comparable regardless of steric hindrance of the thiol or of the functional group present in the starting material. The newly developed procedure allowed for the incorporation of a tertiary alkylthio group, which cannot be easily introduced otherwise. The products were characterized by 1H NMR and 13C NMR.

Conservation concerns are increasing for numerous freshwater turtle species, including Pseudemys gorzugi, which has led to a call for more research. However, traditional sampling methodologies are often time consuming, labor intensive, and invasive, restricting the amount of data that can be collected. Biases of traditional sampling methods can further impair the quality of the data collected, and these shortfalls may discourage their use. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, drones) for conducting wildlife surveys has recently demonstrated the potential to bridge gaps in data collection by offering a less labor intensive, minimally invasive, and more efficient process. We consider the opportunities and challenges associated with organizing a conference online, using a case study of a medium-sized (approx. 400 participants) international conference held virtually in August 2020. In addition, we present quantifiable evidence of the participants’ experience using the results from an online post-conference questionnaire. Although the virtual meeting was not able to replicate the in-person experience in some aspects (e.g. less engagement between participants) the overwhelming majority of respondents found the meeting an enjoyable experience and would join similar events again. Notably, there was a strong desire for future inperson meetings to have at least some online …

According to recent security analysis reports, malicious software (a.k.a. malware) is rising at an alarming rate in numbers, complexity, and harmful purposes to compromise the security of modern computer systems. Recently, malware detection based on low-level hardware features (e.g., Hardware Performance Counters (HPCs) information) has emerged as an effective alternative solution to address the complexity and performance overheads of traditional software-based detection methods. Hardware-assisted Malware Detection (HMD) techniques depend on standard Machine Learning (ML) classifiers to detect signatures of malicious applications by monitoring built-in HPC registers during execution at run-time. Prior HMD methods though effective have limited their study on …

The study presented here depicts the reasons for high school students to have a negative attitude toward mathematics. The students were asked to rate mathematics in comparison to other subjects like history, physics, or computer science. In addition, they were asked about their attitude, beliefs, and motivations toward mathematics. To this end a convergent parallel mixed-method approach was implemented using a questionnaire that combines open-ended, closed-ended (e.g., forced ranking scale, or multiple and single responses), and liker-scale items. One of the main reasons for student’s reluctancy toward mathematics is their lack of understanding and self-perception of low content knowledge, which …
