An Investigation Of Standardized Assessment Performance For Middle School Students Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael Norman Voth May 2023

An Investigation Of Standardized Assessment Performance For Middle School Students Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Michael Norman Voth

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the learning of students in public education through the analysis of standardized assessment performance before and during COVID-19. The study also compares virtual learning and face-to-face students’ change in performance on the standardized assessments. To answer the research questions, the quantitative research uses 5th and 7th grade math and reading STAAR data from 2019 and 2021 for the same cohort of students at a suburban ISD in Texas. The casual-comparative research study suggests that there is a significant drop in students’ performance on standardized assessments in …

Results And Simulation Of Active Self-Assembly, Robert M. Alaniz May 2023

Results And Simulation Of Active Self-Assembly, Robert M. Alaniz

Theses and Dissertations

Self-assembly is the process by which simple elements in a system organize themselves into more complex structures based on a set of rules that govern their interactions. With many ways to create self-assembling systems, new models of abstraction have also arisen to handle specific mechanisms and procedures. We explore several open problems in the seeded model of Active Self-Assembly, Chemical Reaction Networks, and Surface Chemical Reaction Networks, proving new results while developing a robust simulation environment, AutoTile, to help build and test these results.

A Machine Learning Approach To Evaluate The Effect Of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors On Chronic Kidney Disease In Diabetes Patients, Solomon Eshun May 2023

A Machine Learning Approach To Evaluate The Effect Of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitors On Chronic Kidney Disease In Diabetes Patients, Solomon Eshun

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant complication that contributes to diabetes-related mortality in the United States, and there is growing evidence that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) can slow its progression. However, observational studies may suffer from confounding by indication, where patient characteristics and disease severity influence the decision to prescribe SGLT2i. This study utilized electronic health records of individuals with diabetes (from TriNetX) to investigate the effectiveness of SGLT2i on CKD progression. The database provided detailed information on patients’ CKD status, demographics, diagnosis, procedures, and medications, along with corresponding dates of diagnosis and prescription. The study comprised of …

Evaluation Of Black Holes In An Evolving Universe, John P. Naan May 2023

Evaluation Of Black Holes In An Evolving Universe, John P. Naan

Theses and Dissertations

There are various solutions to the Einstein field equations that represent different physical assumptions, but how to represent multiple black holes within an expanding universe remains an area of open interest. The first step to resolving this question involves evaluating spacetime models that contain a single black hole in an expanding universe. Here, we are primarily interested in understanding the energy distribution of black hole models by solving Einstein's equations using the associated spacetime metric and comparing the propagation of waves within the model against other known spacetime models. Specifically, we will evaluate the combined Schwarschild-de Sitter solution under a …

Congruences For Quotients Of Rogers-Ramanujan Functions, Maria Del Rosario Valencia Arevalo May 2023

Congruences For Quotients Of Rogers-Ramanujan Functions, Maria Del Rosario Valencia Arevalo

Theses and Dissertations

In 1919 the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan conjectured congruences for the partition function p(n) modulo powers of the primes 5,7,11. In this work, we study Ramanujan type congruences modulo powers of primes p = 7,11,13,17,19,23 satisfied by the Fourier coefficients of quotients the Rogers-Ramanujan Functions G(τ) and H(τ) and the Dedekind eta function η(5τ). In addition to deriving new congruences, we develop the foundational theory of modular forms to motivate and prove the results. The work includes proofs of congruences facilitated by Python/SageMath code.

Near-Optimal Control Of A Quadcopter Using Reinforcement Learning, Alberto Velazquez-Estrada May 2023

Near-Optimal Control Of A Quadcopter Using Reinforcement Learning, Alberto Velazquez-Estrada

Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a novel control method for quadcopters that achieves near-optimal tracking control for input-affine nonlinear quadcopter dynamics. The method uses a reinforcement learning algorithm called Single Network Adaptive Critics (SNAC), which approximates a solution to the discrete-time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (DT-HJB) equation using a single neural network trained offline. The control method involves two SNAC controllers, with the outer loop controlling the linear position and velocities (position control) and the inner loop controlling the angular position and velocities (attitude control). The resulting quadcopter controller provides optimal feedback control and tracks a trajectory for an infinite-horizon, and it is compared with …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Here we summarize the main takeaways from a symposium and hybrid virtual and in-person participatory discussion focused on the challenges of scale in understanding the ecology and management of phyllosphere microbial communities. We provide an overview of the confounding effects of spatial scale on inference in microbial ecology, the spatial organization of microbial interactions in the phyllosphere, advances and remaining gaps in measuring phyllosphere colonization across scales, and the epidemiology in the phyllosphere. We hope to motivate further discussion and the development and adoption of creative approaches to solving the challenges of scale to enhance fundamental understanding and practical management …

The Development Of Sociomathematical Norms In The Transition To Tertiary Exam-Oriented Individualistic Mathematics Education In An East Asian Context, Woong Lim, Hyunkyoung Yoon, Younggon Bae, Oh Nam Kwon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This study investigates social, mathematical, and sociomathematical norms perceived by college students in an engineering mathematics course and examines the students’ sense of mathematics as signals of individual merit. Data sources include a survey and one-on-one interviews with 38 students. The findings help illustrate student perceptions of academic social norms in a large-lecture course represented by the acquisition model of learning in college, detached from communal and collaborative disciplinary practices. Findings provide insights into the local educational context of an East Asian country as a case study when exam-oriented mathematics is institutionalized as normalcy.

We present the discovery and characterization of six short-period, transiting giant planets from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) -- TOI-1811 (TIC 376524552), TOI-2025 (TIC 394050135), TOI-2145 (TIC 88992642), TOI-2152 (TIC 395393265), TOI-2154 (TIC 428787891), and TOI-2497 (TIC 97568467). All six planets orbit bright host stars (8.9 <G < 11.8, 7.7 <K < 10.1). Using a combination of time-series photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations from the TESS Follow-up Observing Program Working Group, we have determined that the planets are Jovian-sized (RP = 0.99--1.45 RJ), have masses ranging from 0.92 to 5.26 MJ, and orbit F, G, and K stars (4766 ≤ Teff ≤ 7360 K). We detect a significant orbital …

We investigate the dispersal of droplet nuclei inside a canonical room of size 10 × 10 × 3 . 2 m 3 with a four-way cassette air-conditioning unit placed at the center of the ceiling. We use Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations with three flow rates corresponding to air changes per hour (ACH) values of 2.5, 5, and 10. The room setup as well as the operating conditions are chosen to match those of a recent high-fidelity large eddy simulation (LES) study. We use statistical overloading with a total of one million droplet nuclei being initially distributed randomly with uniform …

Uniform Distributions On Curves And Quantization, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Apr 2023

Uniform Distributions On Curves And Quantization, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The basic goal of quantization for probability distribution is to reduce the number of values, which is typically uncountable, describing a probability distribution to some finite set and thus to make an approximation of a continuous probability distribution by a discrete distribution. It has broad application in signal processing and data compression. In this paper, first we define the uniform distributions on different curves such as a line segment, a circle, and the boundary of an equilateral triangle. Then, we give the exact formulas to determine the optimal sets of n -means and the n th quantization errors for different …

Multiple Solutions Of P-Fractional Schrödinger-Choquard-Kirchhoff Equations With Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev Critical Exponents, Xiaolu Lin, Shenzhou Zheng, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article, we are concerned with multiple solutions of Schrödinger-Choquard-Kirchhoff equations involving the fractional p -Laplacian and Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev critical exponents in R N . We classify the multiplicity of the solutions in accordance with the Kirchhoff term M ( ⋅ ) and different ranges of q shown in the nonlinearity f ( x , ⋅ ) by means of the variational methods and Krasnoselskii’s genus theory. As an immediate consequence, some recent related results have been improved and extended.

Cranks For Partitions With Bounded Largest Part, Dennis Eichhorn, Brandt Kronholm, Acadia Larsen Apr 2023

Cranks For Partitions With Bounded Largest Part, Dennis Eichhorn, Brandt Kronholm, Acadia Larsen

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

For 80 years, Dyson’s rank has been known as the partition statistic that witnesses the first two of Ramanujan’s celebrated congruences for the ordinary partition function. In this paper, we show that Dyson’s rank actually witnesses families of partition congruences modulo every prime . This comes from an in-depth study of when a “multiplicity-based statistic” is a crank witnessing congruences for the function p ` n, m˘ , which enumerates partitions of n with parts of size at most m. We also show that as the modulus increases, there is an ever-growing collection of distinct multiplicity-based cranks witnessing these same …

Naphtha is an important distillation product of crude oil, and is used as a raw material for first-generation products such as ethylene, propylene, gasoline, xylene (BTX), and others. However, due to the different sources of crude oil, differences in naphtha composition impact the quality of conversion processes. Parameters such as pressure, charge flow, and temperature need to be adjusted for conversion efficiency. This work aims to compare naphtha samples from different origins, through the analysis of distillation curve (ASTM D86), density (ASTM D4052), total sulfur (ASTM D4294), and n-paraffins, iso-paraffins, olefins, naphthene, and aromatics (PIONA, ASTM D5134). Among these parameters …

Cooperative Heterometallic Platforms Enabling Selective C–H Bond Activation And Functionalization Of Pyridines, Manar M. Shoshani Apr 2023

Cooperative Heterometallic Platforms Enabling Selective C–H Bond Activation And Functionalization Of Pyridines, Manar M. Shoshani

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

The development of methodologies for regioselective C–H functionalization of N-heterocycles has seen sustained growth over the last two decades. Cooperative reactivity stemming from the addition of Lewis-acidic metals to late-transition-metal complexes has enabled regioselective catalytic transformations. Progress in the design of ligands and Lewis-acidic metal precursors has led to development of in situ cooperative catalysts able to facilitate C–H functionalization of pyridine at C-2, C-3, and C-4 positions. Very recently, focused efforts toward well-defined heterometallic complexes facilitating C-H bond catalysis have been targeted. Transformations showcasing regioselective C-2 transformations have been achieved. This perspective examines select examples delineating the evolution …

The larvae of Lasioptera donacis Coutin feed on fungal communities lining galleries within the mesophyll of leaf sheaths of Arundo donax in an aggregative manner. It has been stated that L. donacis could have established a fundamental symbiotic relationship with one fungus, although the fungal composition of these communities remains unsettled. Using a culture-dependent approach and ITS sequencing, the present work characterizes and compares the fungal communities associated with L. donacis in Eurasia with the endophytes of A. donax in Texas where L. donacis is absent. The 65 cultivable isolates obtained from L. donacis fungal communities were sorted into 15 …

Non-Hermitian Edge Burst Without Skin Localization, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani Apr 2023

Non-Hermitian Edge Burst Without Skin Localization, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

In a class of non-Hermitian quantum walk in lossy lattices with open boundary conditions, an unexpected peak in the distribution of the decay probabilities appears at the edge, referred to as an edge burst. It is proposed that the edge burst originates jointly from the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) and the imaginary gaplessness of the spectrum [W.-T. Xue et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 120401 (2022)]. Using a particular one-dimensional lossy lattice with a nonuniform loss rate, we show that the edge burst can occur even in the absence of skin localizations. Furthermore, we discuss that the edge …

Generalized Spherical Aluthge Transforms And Binormality For Commuting Pairs Of Operators, Slaviša Djordjević, Jaewoong Kim, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we introduce the notion of generalized spherical Aluthge transforms for commuting pairs of operators and study nontrivial joint invariant (resp. hyperinvariant) subspaces between the generalized spherical Aluthge transform and the original commuting pair. Next, we study the norm continuity through generalized Aluthge transform maps. We also study how the Taylor spectra and the Fredrolm index of commuting pairs of operators behave under the spherical Duggal transform. Finally, we introduce the notion of Campbell binormality for commuting pairs of operators and investigate some of its basic properties under spherical Aluthge and Duggal transforms. Moreover, we obtain new set …

The human brain’s resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) provides stable trait-like measures of differences in the perceptual, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of individuals. The rsFC of the prefrontal cortex is hypothesized to mediate a person’s rational self-government, as is also measured by personality, so we tested whether its connectivity networks account for vulnerability to psychosis and related personality configurations. Young adults were recruited as outpatients or controls from the same communities around psychiatric clinics. Healthy controls (n = 30) and clinically stable outpatients with bipolar disorder (n = 35) or schizophrenia (n = 27) were diagnosed by …

P-Adic Cellular Neural Networks: Applications To Image Processing, B. A. Zambrano-Luna, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The p-adic cellular neural networks (CNNs) are mathematical generalizations of the neural networks introduced by Chua and Yang in the 80s. In this work we present two new types of -adic CNNs that can perform computations with real data, and whose dynamics can be understood almost completely. The first type of networks are edge detectors for grayscale images. The stationary states of these networks are organized hierarchically in a lattice structure. The dynamics of any of these networks consists of transitions toward some minimal state in the lattice. The second type is a new class of reaction–diffusion networks. We investigate …

Characterizing The Response Of The Coastal Rio Grande To Upstream Damming, Timothy A. Goudge, John M. Swartz, Tian Y. Dong, David Mohrig Apr 2023

Characterizing The Response Of The Coastal Rio Grande To Upstream Damming, Timothy A. Goudge, John M. Swartz, Tian Y. Dong, David Mohrig

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Dams are major obstructions to the flow of water and the transport of sediment in rivers. Much work has shown the construction of dams, and storage of sediment in reservoirs, can lead to significant changes in the morphodynamic behavior of alluvial rivers; however, in most cases, the effect of damming has a finite downstream limit as sediment is supplied back to the river through channel bed/bank erosion and/or tributary inputs. Here we present a study of a natural experiment that isolates one source of sediment downstream of a dam – the lower Rio Grande, which has no major tributary inputs …

Aloe Barbadensis Rinds Employ Physical And Chemical Defense Mechanisms Against Insect Herbivores With Varying Success, Zachary Johnson, Ishveen Kaur, Fernando Castillo, Rupesh R. Kariyat, Debasish Bandyopadhyay

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Plants deter herbivory through a suite of physical and chemical defenses. While most studies have focused on understanding one or the other, efficient plant defense against herbivory is often cumulative. To examine this, we used Aloe barbadensis (Asphodelaceae) as a model, since in natural settings, the species is found to be well-defended against insect herbivores. To start with, we hypothesized that the epicuticular wax potentially plays an important role in herbivore defense as the major physical defense. To test our hypothesis, we conducted bioactivity-guided extraction and polarity-based fractionation of A. barbadensis rinds. We then mixed them into an artificial diet, …
