"Donna Florida, a narrative poem described in the prologue as 'a work of the writer’s youth,' was first published in pieces in The Boston Monthly in 1841 and in Magnolia in 1843. An admirer of Lord Byron’s Don Juan, William Gillmore Simms was inspired to write about the subject in the wake of 'constant remark and criticism' of Byron’s work, 'particularly in connection with the premature and lamented fate of the unhappy writer.' Although never finished, the poem in its extended form of four cantos was eventually paid for and distributed privately by Simms, with the help of a few …

Interestingly, the date noted at the close of the poem is 6 February 1838, just one week after Osceola’s death." The title includes a misspelling of Osceola's name.

"An Authentic Narrative of the Seminole War, attributed to Mary Godfrey (1836), details the horrors of an African and Indian rampage along the Florida frontier, and was hawked with graphic foldouts of the carnage. Two thirds of the text deals with escalating skirmishes leading up to the Second Seminole War; the information concerning the war is relatively accurate, the details of successive disputed treaties are repeated from the perspective of the white invaders, however, and the 'savages,' are consistently portrayed as intent on a “war of extermination” against the innocent settlers."

"Nathan S. Jarvis’ Army Surgeon’s Notes records the experiences and adventures—rather than medical duties—of an army appointed doctor during the Second Seminole War. The notes are staggered and incoherent at times. Judging from the stories contained herein, explaining in detail the severe conditions Jarvis and his comrades endured, it is likely Jarvis’s opportunities to write were limited. There are nuggets of text that tell stories of struggle, survival, and treachery on both sides of the fight."
