The global community promised that the crime of genocide would be prevented and signatory parties of the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide (December 9, 1948) would do everything in their power to prevent another Holocaust from occurring. Organized as part of the NSF-funded Strong Coasts Coastlines and People (CoPe) project, this two-part event was designed as a way to share research findings with the communities and partners who have been central to the project’s success.

This teacher action research study describes the development and application of the opportunities for growth teaching method to increase learner motivation, persistence, cooperation and positive self-talk among primary school students. The approach was implemented with 30 fourth graders in a Philadelphia public school classroom to foster unity, support attitudes toward academics and participation, redefine failure, and reframe challenges. Before this intervention, most of the students lacked self-regulation, self-awareness, and relationship skills needed to thrive. In this inquiry, the teacher worked alongside a university mentor to develop, monitor, and analyze the teacher’s wonderings. In a 3rd grade classroom, the teacher wanted to explore how hands-on and discourse strategies could impact mathematics achievement for all students. Specifically, the teacher explored how utilizing hands-on activities and discourse strategies in collaborative groups could lead to increased engagement and better outcomes for her exceptional student education (ESE) population in learning multiplication and division. Teaching Ai Ethics And Skepticism: The Impact Of Instruction On Ethical Usage On Students’ Perceptions, Jenna D. Justin

Journal of Practitioner Research

This study investigates the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in K-12 education, focusing on how explicit instruction influences students' perceptions of AI tools like ChatGPT. Conducted with 80 sixth-grade students at A.D. Henderson University School and FAU High School, the research tracks changes in student understanding and skepticism of AI following a World History unit. Pre- and post-instruction surveys revealed a decline in comfort with AI as students became more aware of its ethical concerns, including plagiarism, bias, and misinformation. The findings suggest integrating AI ethics into the middle school curriculum to foster responsible AI usage among students.

We aim to expand units coordination and construction assessment by examining the significance of embodiment and teacher noticing, especially in relation to recent developments in equitable mathematics teacher noticing research. We outline our approach as mathematics teacher educators with a wide range of expertise, wherein we investigated how prospective elementary mathematics teachers (PTs) notice students' units construction and coordination through embodied actions and the impact of incorporating a focus on embodiment in assessment. First Ground Visit To The Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes Forsteri Colony At Jason Peninsula, Larsen C Ice Shelf, Weddell Sea, Antarctica, Jonathan Zaccaria

Marine Ornithology

The growth of ecotourism leads tour operators to develop means of exploration that facilitate access to remote and difficult-to-reach areas. For instance, new ice-class expedition ships can now bring visitors to isolated places in Antarctica that have never before been visited. In November 2021, a first ground visit was made to the Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri colony at the Jason Peninsula. The result is the first census of the population that has been conducted in situ. This example illustrates that reaching extremely isolated places through ecotourism is an opportunity to develop citizen science and collect useful data.

This note summarises key identification criteria for Fuegian Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus chilensis that permit field separation from Wilson’s Storm Petrel O. o. oceanicus/exasperatus. Multiple sightings of presumed Fuegian Storm Petrel off São Tomé are considered in the light of these identification criteria. Here, we establish a provisional range for presumed Fuegian Storm Petrels in the Atlantic based on relevant literature, photographs in the Macaulay Library, and responses to social media requests.

Invasive mammalian predators have devastating effects on seabird nesting colonies. A census was conducted on breeding Wedge-tailed Shearwaters Ardenna pacifica in 2016 and 2021 on D’Arros Island, Seychelles, which has been rat-free since 2003. Results were compared with an earlier population estimate to assess population growth following the rat eradication. Compared to counts in 2009, we estimated a 10-fold increase in breeding population size, with 2768 (95% confidence interval (CI) 2424–3112) and 2406 (95% CI 2143–2667) breeding pairs in 2016 and 2021, respectively. We report the development of a colony of threatened Newell’s Shearwater Puffinus newelli (NESH) at Makamaka‘ole, West Maui, USA, a successful first undertaking in the Hawaiian Islands. Efforts involved the construction of two predator-proof fenced areas, removal/control of predators, placement of nest boxes, and social attraction using recorded calls and decoys. Initially, one of the management areas was intended for Hawaiian Petrel Pterodroma sandwichensis (HAPE) and the other for NESH. Exclosures were completed and mammalian predators were removed in 2013, and social attraction began in 2014. The Marbled Murrelet Brachyramphus marmoratus breeds and overwinters along the coast of British Columbia, Canada, and is listed as Threatened under the Canadian Species at Risk Act. Understanding population trends for this seabird species is important for management and recovery, yet long-term time-series data for Marbled Murrelet abundance are rare. We update trends and annual fluctuations of Marbled Murrelet numbers derived from at-sea counts in Laskeek Bay, Haida Gwaii, on the north coast of British Columbia, 1990–2020. The 2014–2016 Pacific marine heatwave caused unprecedented die-offs and multi-year reproductive failures for Common Murres Uria aalge along the west coast of North America. Lingering impacts, such as declines in colony attendance and productivity, have persisted at some colonies following the heatwave and are attributed largely to changes in prey availability and quality. Here, we present evidence of an additional, top-down mechanism contributing to Common Murre breeding failures on Gull Island (Alaska): disturbance of nesting birds by aerial predators and associated egg depredation. In 2022, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus resulted in mass mortality throughout seabird colonies in the North Atlantic Ocean. While mortalities and transmission of the virus are being documented, other effects are less understood. We documented nest abandonment and unprecedented reproductive failure by Northern Gannets Morus bassanus at Cape St. Mary’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, the species’ southernmost colony. Reproductive success in 2022 was the lowest on record at 17%, which was likely a result of adults abandoning the nest and succumbing to avian influenza virus (AIV) infection. Aberrant colouration in birds is relatively common but melanism occurs infrequently. We report an observation of a melanistic Razorbill Alca torda attending the nesting colony at Machias Seal Island, Bay of Fundy in 2022 and 2023. This is the third reported occurrence of a melanistic Razorbill and the first in over 100 years.

We explore the possibility of identifying Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus colonies in the saltmarshes of the Lagoon of Venice, Italy, using Google Earth satellite images. One reproductive season was considered (June 2017), based on the images available on Google Earth. This species builds nests clustered around tidal pools and tidal creeks, providing a dark background to reveal the white gulls. Images of the southern part of the lagoon (excluding fish farms) were analyzed by dividing it into sectors (n = 403) using the Google Earth grid at an elevation of 100 m above ground level. Notes On A Plover Briefly Incubating An Oystercatcher Nest In Patagonia, José O. Valdebenito

A breeding female Two-banded Plover Charadrius falklandicus was observed incubating the eggs of a Magellanic Oystercatcher Haematopus leucopodus while the nest was unattended by the oystercatcher. The behaviour was likely triggered by the plover’s nest becoming momentarily inaccessible, and so, being in incubation mode, the bird responded by incubating the nearest nest available. This is the first report of such behaviour while the oystercatcher was nearby, and the plover nest was still active and in sight.

Marbled Murrelets Brachyramphus marmoratus are small seabirds widely distributed in nearshore waters on the west coast of North America, from Alaska to central California. A 1986 review of anecdotal records revealed that Marbled Murrelets use coastal freshwater lakes during the breeding season, possibly to forage, and in winter, possibly while prospecting for nest sites in old-growth forest. Species population estimates are a fundamental component of conservation planning, but there are deficiencies in reliable data for many seabirds. The Pink-footed Shearwater Ardenna creatopus is a seabird that breeds on three islands worldwide, with the largest population on Isla Mocha, Chile. We aimed to update the breeding population estimate of Pink-footed Shearwaters on Isla Mocha, comparing results from design- and model-based estimation methods. We counted shearwater burrows in 220 randomly generated five-meter-radius plots across pre-defined strata on Isla Mocha. This study examines the distribution of Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica along the northwest coast of South America. The species is well known in tropical waters distant from the coast, but it also appears to be a regular visitor to shelf-break waters off Colombia and northern Ecuador; there is no evidence indicating a similar presence within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Peru, where waters are colder. About 50% of Wedge-tailed Shearwater sightings are associated with dolphins and/or large fish. More than 90% of the nearshore South American records are of pale-phase individuals.

Seabird-vessel interactions are often studied through the lens of fisheries bycatch, but seabirds encounter many watercraft types. Western Gulls Larus occidentalis breeding on the Farallon Islands (California, USA) have a foraging domain that encompasses both shipping lanes and productive fishing grounds, resulting in ample opportunities for vessel encounters. Previous research showed that these Western Gulls can serve as ecosystem indicators because their foraging behavior is linked to ocean prey conditions, and because their foraging grounds overlap with that of Humpback Whales Megaptera novaeangliae, which can make prey accessible. We report predation by an Arctic Fox Alopex lagopus on two seabird species, Atlantic Puffins Fratercula arctica and Leach’s Storm Petrels Hydrobates leucorhous, nesting on Bakeapple Island, Little Fogo Islands, Newfoundland, Canada. This event took place in 2022, when a whole-island inspection revealed that fox, facilitated by over-ice invasion, killed at least 139 adult storm petrels and 8 puffin chicks. The fox also dug out 83 storm petrel and 4 puffin burrows. Breeding by seabirds on the island, which harbours some of the northernmost colonies in Newfoundland, was also largely disrupted; we documented extremely low egg and chick production values …

Great Black-backed Gulls Larus marinus and American Herring Gulls L. argentatus smithsonianus are considered dietary generalists at the population level: they consume a variety of prey types, including the adults and offspring of other seabirds, and they shift among prey types as availability varies. Atlantic Puffin Fratercula arctica adults, eggs, and chicks are often the target of depredation, and adults are also susceptible to kleptoparasitic attacks by large gulls during their summer breeding season in coastal Newfoundland, Canada. Scarce information is available on the trophic ecology and feeding habitats of the Peruvian Tern Sternula lorata. We searched 15 Peruvian Tern colonies along the coast of northern Chile during the breeding seasons of 2008 to 2018 to evaluate the tern’s main food source. We collected samples of prey remains found near nests as well as prey items regurgitated by chicks and adults during our visits. We found that the Peruvian Tern is mainly piscivorous, secondarily feeding on some cephalopods and euphausiids. Strategies to reduce the negative impacts of fisheries on ecosystems often come into conflict with fishers who have different experiences with, and perceptions of, biodiversity compared to policy makers and fisheries managers. We interviewed 800 fishers along 2400 kilometers of the Humboldt Current System (HCS) coast, assessing fishers’ perceptions of the impacts of marine predators on fishing and their proposals to reduce conflicts with small-scale net fisheries. Vessel captains saw seabirds as positive indicators of fish presence along the HCS (mean probability 62.7%). In contrast, sea lions were perceived negatively, affecting catches for all fishers and causing fishing gear damage …
