This paper reviews the literature on moults and resulting appearances of the Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis; LTDU), focusing on the high degree of plumage variation observed in this species, which is unique among ducks. In addition to exhibiting three visibly different plumages in its first year of life, and two visibly different plumages every year thereafter, the LTDU also shows a high variation among individuals, due, at least in part, to individual variation in the prolongation of each moult. This has led to confusion for those describing LTDU plumage and moult patterns in the past. Previous (and some erroneous) hypotheses …

An observational study of loafing and sleeping behaviour of Trumpeter Swans was conducted in southern Ontario throughout the year in 2018 and 2019. Like other birds, these swans have the ability to close down one brain hemisphere at a time during rest, which is indicated by eye closure. We quantified rates of closure of eyes during sleeping bouts for both breeding and non-breeding swans. Single eye closure varied in frequency, duration and in terms of which hemisphere was shut down. Increasing duration of eye closure over time indicated an increased sense of security with surrounding in one mated pair. Proportion …

Populations of many breeding marsh bird species continue to decline in the southern Great Lakes basin, although this is not the case for the threatened Least Bittern. Recent analysis based on data from the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program of Birds Canada shows that its abundance has increased consistently since the mid-2000s throughout the lower Great Lakes in the U.S. and Canada, with the highest abundance occurring in recent years. In this study, we expanded on these findings by assessing patterns in abundance of Least Bitterns among different geographical locations in Ontario and across years from 1995 to 2019. We …

Between 2012 and 2017, we conducted a Common Gallinule banding study to determine the feasibility of catching and banding gallinule with an airboat in Ontario, estimate how many birds could potentially be banded and subsequently encountered, calculate an index of productivity and assess whether enough data could be obtained to inform management decisions and conservation planning. We captured gallinules using dip nets and spotlights at night from an airboat. In total, we banded 440 (approximately 28%) of the 1,564 gallinules that have ever been banded in Ontario. Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often experience difficulties in both vocal and non-vocal communication, which can lead to problem behavior as a means of expressing needs and wants. Functional communication training (FCT) has been shown to be effective in teaching functional communicative responses (FCRs) and decreasing problem behavior. However, studies on the use of sign language as a communicative response or modality in FCT have been limited, despite its benefits, including feasibility and low response effort, compared to other modalities, such as picture cards and augmentative and alternative communication devices. International Journal of Speleology
We redefine the extent of former glaciers in the northern Jura Mountains through the study of endokarst deposits. Sedimentary deposits (pebbly debris flows, laminated clays, and allochthonous limestone blocks) and chemical deposits (speleothems) were identified and studied using three complementary approaches: (i) detailed geomorphological mapping, (ii) petrographic analysis, and (iii) U/Th-dating. In addition, a surface geomorphological analysis made it possible to calculate the minimum erosion time required for the formation of the sinkhole linked to the underground study site. The study site is the Dolois Chamber, an underground site upstream of the Verneau karst network (Doubs Department, France). The combined …

Red-billed Tropicbird Phaethon aethereus has been considered vagrant in the Gulf of Guinea, although with suggestions of sporadic breeding at Tinhosas Islets, south of Príncipe Island. Here, we report repeated visits of birds to potential nesting sites, aggressive territorial behavior, and pair interactions on the coastal cliffs in the southern portion of São Tomé Island and nearby islets of Rolas and Sete Pedras. These observations strongly suggest that the species breeds at these locations, which would expand the known breeding range in the eastern Atlantic. Future work is needed to clarify the status of the species in the region.

The Fuegian Steamer Duck Tachyeres pteneres is endemic to the southern cone of South America. Though classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, it is categorized as Near Threatened by the Chilean Ministry of Environment. However, few studies have been conducted on this species, and large portions of its distribution remain unsurveyed. This lack of information hinders a full appreciation of the species' conservation status under the IUCN criteria. We therefore conducted extensive surveys along the southern coast of Chile. The feathers of seabirds are widely used as appropriate indicators for various aspects of avian ecology and toxicology. To reveal total mercury (Hg) concentrations and the connection to diet using stable isotope analysis in Black-tailed Gulls Larus crassirostris, feathers were collected from 10 carcasses from the breeding colony on Kabushima Island during the incubation period in 2020. Total Hg concentrations in primary remiges were found to decrease during the molt sequence. The innermost primaries (P1), the first to be replaced after breeding, had the highest Hg concentrations of all feathers (7.73 ± 2.37 μg/g dry weight). The concentration of Hg …

Seasonal And Spatial Patterns Of Avian Assemblages In The Eastern Taiwan Strait: Implications For Offshore Wind Farm Development, Mei-Ling Bai, Chia-Hsiang Huang, Yu-Yi Lien

The eastern Taiwan Strait, a region situated along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and currently undergoing rapid offshore wind energy development, remains poorly studied with respect to its seabird assemblages. Through intensive vessel-based transect surveys conducted between 2014 and 2021, this study documented 22,187 birds from 105 species across 10 orders and 29 families. Migratory non-seabirds accounted for 55.2% of individuals and dominated the species richness, highlighting the region's importance for migratory pathways. Seabird density was relatively low, however, consistent with trends in other tropical regions, and this pattern may also reflect both environmental degradation and methodological differences in density estimation. …
