A Statically Balanced Shape-Shifting Surface, Joseph Eugene Pishnery

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a concept for producing a Statically Balanced Shape-Shifting Surface (SB-SSS). In this context, an SB-SSS is a surface that can require near-zero magnitude force changes to accomplish a change in shape while retaining effectiveness as a physical barrier. This paper focuses on how to statically balance a specifically-designed compliant mechanism and how to incorporate this mechanism into a polygonal cell.

The mechanism consists of a compliant Peaucellier-Lipkin linkage layered with a pre-stressed link as the balancer. Previous work is presented that can show how a polygonal cell can be incorporated into a surface via a tiling …

This study seeks to determine whether the process of mortgage finance liberalization, manifested in concurrent activities of securitization, deregulation, and neo-liberal policy, have resulted in changes to the tenure of residents in neighborhoods in Tampa Bay. It makes use of existing literature on gentrification and mortgage finance and compares those findings with three sample neighborhoods in and around the city of Tampa. To do so the thesis employs data collected from lenders pursuant to the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, court records of sales and mortgages filed with the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Hillsborough County, and interviews with stakeholders …

Archaeological Survey And Testing On St. Vincent Island, Northwest Florida, Elicia Victoria Kimble

St. Vincent Island is one of the barrier islands in the Florida panhandle between Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge encompasses all 5000 hectares of the island. Archaeological fieldwork in the summer of 2009 included a survey of the entire island and a test unit at one of the island's richest sites. In spring of 2010 a second test unit was excavated at another archaeologically rich site. A total of 16 known sites were investigated and two newly discovered sites recorded. This research combines all these data with information obtained from existing artifact …

Genocide studies has come a long way over the past decade, having attained a level of intellectual sobriety, academic credibility, and public recognition virtually inconceivable forty years ago. At the same time, there have been signs of convergence between the fields of genocide studies and Holocaust historiography and studies. Following the events of September 11, 2001, the U.S. Government began improving security in large population centers and near potential highvalue terrorist targets. Included in these efforts was the development of a more robust border security program, with an emphasis on reducing the threat of terrorist infiltration at America's borders. However, nearly a decade after 9/11, terrorism and organized crime continue to pose significant threats to the United States. As many of these threats emanate from other nations, improved border security helps mitigate these threats. The present invention is a method of extracting infectious pathogens from a volume of blood including the steps of creating a fibrin aggregate confining the pathogens and introducing a fibrin lysis reagent to expose the pathogens for analysis. The fibrin lysis reagent is preferably composed of plasminogen and streptokinase frozen in coincident relation until the fibrin lysis reagent is needed whereby streptokinase enzymatically reacts with plasminogen to form plasmin upon thawing. The plasminogen is suspended in an aqueous salt solution prior to freezing including NaCl and Na3PO4.

Certainly, he has written eloquently about aspects of the Holocaust, and his emphasis on language and its power to make and unmake much of human life, has been widely influential. China's Use Of Cyber Warfare: Espionage Meets Strategic Deterrence, Magnus Hjortdal

This article presents three reasons for states to use cyber warfare and
shows that cyberspace is—and will continue to be—a decisive element in
China's strategy to ascend in the international system. The three reasons
are: deterrence through infiltration of critical infrastructure; militarytechnological
espionage to gain military knowledge; and industrial espionage
to gain economic advantage. China has a greater interest in using
cyberspace offensively than other actors, such as the United States, since
it has more to gain from spying on and deterring the United States than

Revisiting The Estonian Cyber Attacks: Digital Threats And Multinational Responses, Stephen Herzog

In April 2007, the Estonian Government moved a memorial commemorating
the Soviet liberation of the country from the Nazis to a less prominent
and visible location in Tallinn. This decision triggered rioting among
Russian-speaking minorities and cyber terrorism targeting Estonia's critical
economic and political infrastructure. Drawing upon the Estonian
cyber attacks, this article argues that globalization and the Internet have
enabled transnational groups—such as the Russian diaspora—to avenge
their grievances by threatening the sovereignty of nation-states in cyberspace.
Sophisticated and virtually untraceable political "hacktivists" may
now possess the ability to disrupt or destroy government operations,
banking transactions, city power grids, …

The intent of this article is to describe—and prescribe—a scientific framework
for assuring mission essential functions in a contested cyber environment.
Such a framework has profound national security implications
as the American military increasingly depends on cyberspace to execute
critical mission sets. In setting forth this prescribed course of action, the
article will first decompose information systems into atomic processes
that manipulate information at all six phases of the information lifecycle,
then systematically define the mathematical rules that govern mission
assurance.
