This symposium seeks to create dialogue about quality and assessment in Arts Based Educational Research (ABER) by grounding discussion in performance. The session begins with the staging of a research informed dance and theatre piece: “Chicago Butoh”. This performance will then be critiqued by Julia Grey and Graham W. Lea using different approaches to assessing ABER. Tabatha Dell’Angelo then examines the dance and the critiques. Opportunities for audience interaction and dialogue are woven throughout the session. By sharing multiple perspectives on quality assessment grounded in the physicality of live performance, we hope to help audience members envision "better" work and …

Aphra Behn On The Contemporary Stage: Behn's Feminist Legacy And Woman-Directed Revivals Of The Rover, Nicole Elizabeth Stodard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study theorizes the origins and history of the professional female playwright and director from the Restoration period to the present day through the stage history of Behn's most popular play, The Rover. Part one is comprised of two chapters: the first in this section argues the importance of appreciating Behn's proto-directorial function in the Restoration theatre and her significance to the history of feminism and women in professional theatre; the second chapter in this section examines the implications of casting practices and venue changes to eighteenth-century revivals of Behn's canon with a particular eye towards what a contemporary director …

WWABD: What would Aphra Behn—world traveler and spy, playwright and poet of scandal, innovator of novelistic forms—do, were she to imagine a future for digital humanities in period-specific scholarship? This essay outlines a vision for the DH section of Aphra Behn Online: An Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830. In particular, I see three important and interrelated places for development: theorizing the feminized labor of digital recovery, editing, and textual preparation; offering thoughtful and feminist approaches to digital pedagogy that are specific to the work we do in the period; and critically assessing the absences in existing …
