Lyrics, Slave Songs Of The United States, William Francis Allen, Lucy Mckim Garrison, Charles Pickard Ware, Mahisa Henry
Early Visions Bucket
"Slave Songs of the United States (1867) is widely considered the first published anthology of Negro (African American) Spirituals recorded. These songs document, mourn and celebrate the language, pain, hope and resilience of a people who were brought here forcefully, treated inhumanely, converted to a foreign religion, fought for freedom, and who eventually were released from physical bondage with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Singing was a way of daily life for Africans — permeating daily activities, tied to ritual and traditional religion."

Christianity In The Kitchen: A Physiological Cook Book, Mary Mann
Historic Cookbook Collection
"Mary Mann believed that good digestion was synonymous with virtue, and dyspepsia was equated with sin. So the advice and recipes in her cookbook promote good eating habits… discouraging the consumption of processed and fatty foods labelling them 'death in the pot.' Her cookbook contains several hundred recipes for a wide variety of dishes from soup to nuts (including meat - she was not a vegetarian) that reflect this philosophy.
