Revista Venezolana de Ornitología
Plumage coloration plays an important role in camouflage, communication, and physiological processes in birds. Although various pigmentary aberrations of bird plumage have been documented in Venezuela, here we present the first documented case of a Black-bellied Whistling Duck with progressive graying or partial leucism. It is one of the few ducks with documented plumage aberrations in Venezuela and the Americas.

Depredación De Una Coral Montañera Micrurus Mipartitus Por El Gavilán Pita Venado Buteogallus Meridionalis Con Observaciones Adicionales Sobre Su Rango Altitudinal En Venezuela / Predation Of A Red-Tail Coral Snake Micrurus Mipartitus By The Savanna Hawk Buteogallus Meridionalis With New Altitudinal Records In Venezuela, Luis A. Saavedra, Luis Luis
Revista Venezolana de Ornitología
In spite of its widespread distribution, little is known about the biology of the Savanna Hawk Buteogallus meridionalis. Due to its opportunistic diet, the potential prey items have not been extensively characterized. We describe here for the first time a predation event on a coral snake (Elapidae) by the Savanna Hawk and discuss its association with a significant increase in the raptor's altitudinal range. The event occurred on a cattle ranch near an old-growth mountain forest at 2,250 m asl in the Venezuelan Andean valley of the Mucujún River. An adult Savanna Hawk preyed upon an adult Red-tail Coral Snake …

Incidencia De Muertes Por Colisión En Algunas Especies De Rallidae En La Ciudad De Mérida, Estado Mérida, Venezuela / Death Incidence Due To Collisions In Some Species Of Rallidae In The City Of Mérida, Mérida State, Venezuela, Luis A. Saavedra, María Escalona-Cruz
Revista Venezolana de Ornitología
Collisions of birds against man-made structures generate high mortality in birds, especially if they are migratory species because they are attracted and disoriented by artificial illumination. Several species of Rallidae carry out nocturne migratory movements which make these birds prone to crash in the cities. Due to that, data of death Rallidae by collisions was collected in Mérida’s city, Venezuela. A total of 32 individuals were recorded, 19 of them were found by chance around man-made structures (buildings, billboards) between 2020–2021, and 13 specimens (collected between 1970–2012) were deposited in the Vertebrate’s Collection of Universidad de Los Andes (CVULA). Four …

Revista Venezolana de Ornitología
In order to contribute to the knowledge of the distribution of the Greater Ani Crotophaga major in Venezuela, we report the first records of the species within an altitudinal range of 1,540–2,680 m asl. Between December 2014 and May 2021, 11 individuals were sighted in seven different occasions through the main urban park of Mérida city and its surrounding areas, mainly associated to grasslands close to residential areas, and montane forest borders in the periphery. These observations represent the highest records for Venezuela and they could reflect an extension of distribution due to land transformation or migratory movements.

Plumage aberrations in birds are not unusual and have been sporadically mentioned in literature, in which different patterns and variations are described. Leucism is an inherited disorder, characterized on birds by the lack of pigments in part or all of the plumage, and normal coloration of soft parts such as the bill, eyes, and legs. We present here the fi rst record of total leucism in Magnifi cent Frigatebird Fregata magnifi cens, and the fi rst for the species in Venezuela. Long-term studies are needed in the Neotropical region to evaluate survival and breeding success in leucistic birds.

On October 26, 2019 two warblers from the Setophaga genus were recorded in La Vela de Coro, Falcon State, northwestern Venezuela. These individuals were originally reported online as Blackburnian Warbler Setophaga fusca, the best match available in Venezuelan fi eld guides. That record included an undistinguished photo image. But an exhaustive review noted that the image in the photograph perhaps belonged to another Warbler: S. dominica. A bird watching group moved to the original locality in order to harbor more evidence. Seven additional records were obtained, as well as photo evidence of the presence of S. dominica in Venezuela. These …

Body mass and morphometric data among different bird species have been used in comparative studies of patterns of bird community organization. Also, the body mass of birds is essential in a wide variety of disciplines. In Neotropical countries few biometric studies related to birds have been reported; hence, the main objective of this study to provide the morphometric and body mass data of birds captured in xeric, deciduous and mesic understories habitats from northeastern Venezuela, over a ten year (2006-2016) period. From 90 bird species captured, 51 were measured and 39 had their body masses taken. These results could be …

The Roadside Hawk is a common bird of prey in Central and South America. Its general diet is relatively well known, but little is known about its diet and feeding behavior in urban areas. In this work, I describe the feeding routine, vocalizations, preys, and general behavior of a couple Roadside Hawks in El Valle, an urban area of Caracas, Venezuela, between March and May 2017. During eight weeks, 25 records were obtained. In most records, the Roadside Hawk was seen perched with a prey in its talons. At same time, it uttered a vocal sound. After 1–6 minutes, another …
