Reducing Data Requirements In Polymer Science: Deep Neural Networks For Predicting Surface Tension Of Copolymer Compatibilizers, Md Mushfiqul Islam

In polymer chemistry, compatibilization involves adding a substance often a block or graft copolymerto stabilize polymer blends that would otherwise not mix well, leading to rough structures and weak me- chanical properties. Compatibilizers improve miscibility and reduce interfacial tension, which is critical for applications such as mixed-waste polymer recycling. Sequence-controlled polymers offer unique potential by combining the tunable chemistry of synthetic polymers with the precise, function-driven design of biological macromolecules, but unlike proteins, they lack large, evolution-shaped datasets to guide discovery. This research develops a deep learning framework to predict the surface tension of sequence-controlled copolymer compatibilizers across varying concentrations. …

A variety of gull and tern species have adapted to urban environments by nesting on rooftops and other human-made structures. Previous reports of Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) breeding on rooftops have generally involved small numbers of nests (≤25). Here, we report an occurrence of an unusually large number of Common Terns nesting on a rooftop in Port Credit, Ontario, in 2013. A complete survey of the roof was conducted on 31 May, when 1,011 Common Tern nests were counted. A similar number of breeding pairs used this roof in 2014, but the site was largely abandoned by 2015, due to …

Changes In Agricultural Land Use And The Effectiveness Of Protected Areas: Impacts On The Occurrence Of Three Grassland Bird Species In The Carden Plain Of Ontario, Alice L. Merondun, Ginny Moore, Ron Reid, Erica Nol

We measure changes in occurrence (i.e., presence/absence) of three grassland bird species in the Carden Plain, between 2001 to 2005 and 2015 to 2016, by comparing point count results of the 2001–2005 Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas (OBBA) to repeated point counts at the same sites in the more recent period. We examine associations between changes of occurrence and habitat change and protection status of the survey locations for the three most commonly occurring species of Ontario grassland birds (Bobolink, Dolichonyx oryzivorus; Eastern Meadowlark, Sturnella magna; and Savannah Sparrow, Passerculus sandwichensis), all of which have experienced population declines in Ontario of …

Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) breeding populations in inland areas of North America have experienced significant declines, particularly in the Canadian waters of the lower Great Lakes. Once home to two-thirds of the Great Lakes population, Presqu’ile Provincial Park maintained only a small breeding colony of Common Terns from the 1970s to the early 2010s. In 2008, a research program was started to understand the population status of this colony. This involved close collaboration between faculty at Penn State University and Ontario Parks staff, and identified poor reproductive success at this site. The Little Gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus) is a rare gull in most of North America; however, in spring it is relatively numerous at several sites in Ontario, as it migrates with its much more numerous relative, the Bonaparte’s Gull (Chroicocephalus philadelphia). The primary objective of this study was to document the spring migration phenology, abundance and behaviour of the Little Gull and the Bonaparte’s Gull at Oshawa Second Marsh (OSM), Ontario. Pursuit flights, roosting flights and migration departures by Little Gulls are also reported. The study took place from late March to late May, 1992–2022, at OSM. This site consistently hosted …

This paper reviews the literature on moults and resulting appearances of the Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis; LTDU), focusing on the high degree of plumage variation observed in this species, which is unique among ducks. In addition to exhibiting three visibly different plumages in its first year of life, and two visibly different plumages every year thereafter, the LTDU also shows a high variation among individuals, due, at least in part, to individual variation in the prolongation of each moult. This has led to confusion for those describing LTDU plumage and moult patterns in the past. Previous (and some erroneous) hypotheses …

An observational study of loafing and sleeping behaviour of Trumpeter Swans was conducted in southern Ontario throughout the year in 2018 and 2019. Like other birds, these swans have the ability to close down one brain hemisphere at a time during rest, which is indicated by eye closure. We quantified rates of closure of eyes during sleeping bouts for both breeding and non-breeding swans. Single eye closure varied in frequency, duration and in terms of which hemisphere was shut down. Increasing duration of eye closure over time indicated an increased sense of security with surrounding in one mated pair. Proportion …

Populations of many breeding marsh bird species continue to decline in the southern Great Lakes basin, although this is not the case for the threatened Least Bittern. Recent analysis based on data from the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program of Birds Canada shows that its abundance has increased consistently since the mid-2000s throughout the lower Great Lakes in the U.S. and Canada, with the highest abundance occurring in recent years. In this study, we expanded on these findings by assessing patterns in abundance of Least Bitterns among different geographical locations in Ontario and across years from 1995 to 2019. We …

The Fuegian Steamer Duck Tachyeres pteneres is endemic to the southern cone of South America. Though classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, it is categorized as Near Threatened by the Chilean Ministry of Environment. However, few studies have been conducted on this species, and large portions of its distribution remain unsurveyed. This lack of information hinders a full appreciation of the species' conservation status under the IUCN criteria. We therefore conducted extensive surveys along the southern coast of Chile.
