The Debate On Physician-Assisted Death In The United States: A Narrative Analysis Of Formula Stories, Rebecca Blackwell
The Debate On Physician-Assisted Death In The United States: A Narrative Analysis Of Formula Stories, Rebecca Blackwell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Public policy discussions can be viewed as empirical windows into broadly shared culturalvalues and emotions of the social contexts in which the policy discussions take place. This project is a narrative analysis of the public debate on physician-assisted death (PAD), drawing from three data sources: newspaper articles, the websites of social movement organizations, and testimonies from a state legislative hearing. This analysis explores ways in which social actors deploy personal stories that contribute to shape the policy-making process by appealing to cultural beliefs and broadly shared emotions. The findings of this project constitute a contribution to the study of emotions …

Healthcare Data Analytics For Predicting Health Outcomes Of Older Adults And Emergency Responses Of Aged Care Facilities, Nazmus Sakib
Healthcare Data Analytics For Predicting Health Outcomes Of Older Adults And Emergency Responses Of Aged Care Facilities, Nazmus Sakib
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The United States (US) is experiencing rapid growth in its older adult population, who may suffer from multiple chronic diseases, injuries, and impairments. To meet with the excess demand without compromising the quality of care for older adults, the current aged care systems, such as nursing home systems, will face unprecedented challenges of healthcare resource shortage with rising costs. Accurate prediction of health outcomes of individual older adults will facilitate the aged care professionals to better prioritize healthcare resources for the most at-risk individuals with more focused care and provide more proactive and individualized treatment and care delivery. In addition, …
Narrative Meaning Productions Of Compassionate Healthcare: An Examination Of Cultural Codes, Organizational Practices, And Everyday Realities, Carley Geiss
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the social complexities of emotion in healthcare; employing a multi-level narrative approach that explores the cultural, organizational, and interactional aspects of “compassionate care.” The central question I ask is: How do cultural beliefs and values surrounding compassionate healthcare inform organizational practices and the lived experiences of individuals providing such care? This project highlights the largely overlooked cultural, structural aspects of emotion, demonstrating how pervasive collective values and beliefs become institutionalized, and how such standards inform everyday experiences of healthcare providers.

Quality Of Life Of Older Adults With Complicated Grief Receiving Accelerated Resolution Therapy: A Mixed Methods Study, Tina M. Mason
Quality Of Life Of Older Adults With Complicated Grief Receiving Accelerated Resolution Therapy: A Mixed Methods Study, Tina M. Mason
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: It is estimated that 10-15% of bereaved people in the general population are experiencing prolonged, complicated grief after a loss. Persons with complicated grief experience a disruption of usual, pre-death activities, destructive thoughts and actions, and can develop or find a worsening of comorbidities and impairments. All of these, in turn, worsen the experience. Complicated grief reactions can compound the stress of the loss, disrupting the normal functioning of the central nervous, immune, cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and gastrointestinal systems, which in turn can contribute to poor quality of life for the surviving family member. However, due to a paucity of …

International Journal of Speleology
Folia are speleothems that resemble bells, inverted cups, or bracket fungi, and whose origins are still controversial. Cenote Zapote (an underwater cave) in the Yucatán Peninsula (México), is home to some of the largest folia reported to date. These speleothems are currently growing in an active underwater system, meaning this site offers an excellent opportunity to constrain the different formation models proposed for folia, which have traditionally relied on inactive examples. In Cenote Zapote, folia are closely related to bubble trails and cupolas, suggesting an underwater CO2-degassing process. In thin section, they display a succession of columnar-open and …
