The Maghreb Maquiladora: Gender, Labor, And Socio-Economic Power In A Tunisian Export Processing Zone, Claire Therese Oueslati-Porter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study is about Tunisian women's work and lives in the present era of economic neoliberalism. The focus is women in the city of Bizerte, Tunisia, both those who work in Bizerte's export processing zone (EPZ), as well as those who work outside it. This study is a qualitative examination of formal and informal employment, set inside and outside of women's traditional political and economic domain, the home. Through ethnography of women's work and lives, this study's purpose is to contribute evidence against conflating women's "empowerment" with incorporation into global production. However, this study also lends itself to considerations of …

Prospects For Political Reform In China, Jody Lee Tomlin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study is intended to analyze levels of institutional confidence in China. The purpose is to measure the relationship between changing political and cultural values with modernization and levels of institutional criticism. To analyze institutional criticism modernization and political culture theories are used. Using these theories together offers explanatory power as to what political and cultural values may change and why changes in confidence in governance may occur. These theories include socioeconomic, traditional, and political values to measure institutional confidence in 1990 and 2007. The examination of traditional versus modernization values imply that individuals possessing these opposing values display different …

What Do Passengers Do During Travel Time? Structured Observations On Buses And Trains , Marie Russell, Rachel Price, Louise Signal, James Stanley, Zachery Gerring, Jacqueline Cumming

Journal of Public Transportation

Structured observation is one way to assess how public transport passengers actually use their travel time. This study reports on 812 adult passengers in Wellington, New Zealand. Researchers recorded passenger characteristics and behavior over a 4-minute period, on a range of routes and times, using 12 pre-set codes. Most passengers (65.3%) were “looking ahead/out the window” at some point in the observation period, more on buses than on trains. About one-fifth of all passengers observed were seen reading, more on trains. Other activities included listening on headphones, talking, texting, and sleeping/eyes closed. Activities were compared on the basis of gender, …

From Bloodless Revolution To Bloody Counterrevolution: The Adana Massacres Of 1909, Bedross Der Matossian Aug 2011

From Bloodless Revolution To Bloody Counterrevolution: The Adana Massacres Of 1909, Bedross Der Matossian

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The historiography of the Adana Massacres of 1909 is represented by two diverg- ing views. While some Turkish scholars deny the involvement of the local govern- ment officials in the massacres by putting all of the blame on the Armenians who revolted as part of a conspiracy to establish a kingdom in Cilicia, some Armenian scholars, whose work is overshadowed by the Armenian genocide, accuse the Com- mittee of Union and Progress (CUP) of acting behind the scenes to destroy the Armenian economic infrastructure in Adana in order to curb any future political and economic development in the area. Constructivist And Behaviorist Approaches: Development And Initial Evaluation Of A Teaching Practice Scale For Introductory Statistics At The College Level, Rossi A. Hassad Jul 2011

Constructivist And Behaviorist Approaches: Development And Initial Evaluation Of A Teaching Practice Scale For Introductory Statistics At The College Level, Rossi A. Hassad

Numeracy

This study examined the teaching practices of 227 college instructors of introductory statistics from the health and behavioral sciences. Using primarily multidimensional scaling (MDS) techniques, a two-dimensional, 10-item teaching-practice scale, TISS (Teaching of Introductory Statistics Scale), was developed. The two dimensions (subscales) are characterized as constructivist and behaviorist; they are orthogonal. Criterion validity of the TISS was established in relation to instructors’ attitude toward teaching, and acceptable levels of reliability were obtained. A significantly higher level of behaviorist practice (less reform-oriented) was reported by instructors from the U.S., as well as instructors with academic degrees in mathematics and engineering, whereas …

Modeling Human Behavior To Anticipate Insider Attacks, Frank L. Greitzer , Ph.D., Ryan E. Hohimer

Journal of Strategic Security

The insider threat ranks among the most pressing cyber-security challenges
that threaten government and industry information infrastructures.
To date, no systematic methods have been developed that provide a
complete and effective approach to prevent data leakage, espionage, and
sabotage. Current practice is forensic in nature, relegating to the analyst
the bulk of the responsibility to monitor, analyze, and correlate an overwhelming
amount of data. We describe a predictive modeling framework
that integrates a diverse set of data sources from the cyber domain, as well
as inferred psychological/motivational factors that may underlie malicious
insider exploits. This comprehensive threat assessment approach
provides …

From Construction To Conceptualization: Catastrophe Across Three Occasions, John Barnshaw, Lynn Letukas Jun 2011

From Construction To Conceptualization: Catastrophe Across Three Occasions, John Barnshaw, Lynn Letukas

ACURIL 2011: The Role of Libraries and Archives in Disaster Preparedness, Response and Research

This paper explores the process of developing and refining the conceptualization of catastrophe utilizing the extant literature collected following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor leak, the Indian Ocean tsunami, and the BP oil spill. A catastrophe is different from a disaster in that most or all of a community or area is impacted, many local individuals are unable to undertake their usual roles, the community undergoes a period of prolonged inoperability, media plays an increasing role in the construction of the public perception of the occasion, and the political arena shifts from a local or regional issue to a national or …

A panel from the exhibit "From Fiddler Crabs to a Harbor with Class: A History of Bayboro Harbor and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg" celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the university.

Knowing that residents of Pinellas County wanted access to a public university, USF President John S. Allen devised a plan to turn the Bay Campus into a branch of USF that offered commuter students access to upper-level undergraduate and limited graduate programs. A two-plus-two articulation agreement allowed graduates of St. Petersburg Junior College to complete their bachelor's degrees at USF St. Petersburg if the campus supported their …

Intimate Partner Violence And Alcohol Abuse In The Indigenous Populations Of Panamá, Addie K. Cant, Sarah E. Pheiffer

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Indigenous communities in the Chiriqui province of Panamá, Central America, the Ngöbe and Buglé tribes, identified a growing problem with alcohol abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV). The College of Nursing at the University of South Florida was invited to conduct research to determine the extent of the problem and to assist with community intervention development. A descriptive correlational study adapting an interview-style survey from the 2005 World Health Organization‟s “Multi-country study on women’s health and domestic violence against women: Summary report of initial results on prevalence, health outcomes and women’s responses” was conducted to provide baseline research that identifies …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Elementary Education Teacher Candidates' Authentic Assessments And Performance On The Professional Education Subtests On The Florida Teacher Certification Exam (Ftce), Thomas Raymond Lang Ii

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

According to Wilkerson and Lang (2003, p.1) with approximately "90% of schools, colleges, and departments of education using portfolios of one form or another as decision-making tools for standards-based decisions regarding certification or licensure (as well as NCATE accreditation), it is appropriate to explore the legal and psychometric aspects of this assessment device."

This study was conducted to examine how well the authentic assessments created in the Chalk and Wire ePortfolio initiative, which was created to provide authentic assessments of the Accomplished Practices, relate to the measures in the Professional Knowledge subtests on Florida Teacher Certification Examination.

The sample …

Men Get Laid, But Women Get Screwed. A Radical Feminist Look At America’S Harmful Views On Women’S Sexuality., Rebecca G. Killik

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

There is a great misunderstanding in our society that women who encounter unwanted pregnancies knew exactly what the consequences were when they decided to have sex. Unfortunately, for a great deal of these accidental mothers, there is a huge stigma put on pregnant women who are non-married and/or in their teens and early twenties. In America there is an increasing incidence of teenage pregnancy rates because of lack of sex education. Ironically, these figures are lower” in six other Western countries [which] range from only 13 to 53 percent of the U.S. rate.” (Westoff  254) What is more, “in women …

Economic Determinism Of Reproductive Ideologies, Kristen L. Brustad Apr 2011

Economic Determinism Of Reproductive Ideologies, Kristen L. Brustad

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

While having children is an individual or couple based decision, general population trends help to indicate correlations between certain factors and fertility. Among these factors is the state of the economy. For an individual deciding on potential children, the expected costs can help to explain whether or not a person knowingly and purposefully plans to have children. The concept of this research is to combine the qualitative data on personal ideologies about having children with the quantitative data on how the economy has impacted these fertility decisions. On the most basic level, this research aims to gain insight on the …

Searching For My Sister, Crystal Tenn Apr 2011

Searching For My Sister, Crystal Tenn

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

My thesis analyzes adopts a discursive approach to reconstruct and recover the life history and memory of my sister, who committed suicide at the age of 21. As opposed to looking for my sister in the pathologizing, hidden accounts of diagnostic categories, a discursive approach within communication allows me to look for her in what in visible and manifest in language. I transcribed three narratives describing my sister’s life and analyzed them in conjunction with literature and a textual analysis. The narratives are spoken transcriptions from my mother, a local chiropractor who befriended my sister, and I. The literature review …

Resistance Meets Spirituality In Academia: "I Prayed On It!", Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications

We describe the lived experiences of a Black Woman educational leader who has studied and worked in the academy and in the field of K-12 education. This partial life history, excavated through the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT), illuminates the social construction of race and the pervasiveness and permanence of racism. We determined through a series of interviews that the participant's resilient resistance is guided by critical spirituality so that circumstances and people who challenge her also confront this source of power. Her lived experience, from student to faculty member, conveys the challenges and opportunities she faces and adds …
