Natural Law Ethics: A Comparison Of The Theravāda And Thomistic Traditions, David Lantigua
Natural Law Ethics: A Comparison Of The Theravāda And Thomistic Traditions, David Lantigua
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the topic of natural law in the Therav
āda and Thomistic traditions by utilizing the methodology of comparative religious ethics. Approaches to the method such as ethical formalism, ethical naturalism, and narrative ethics are assessed with the author opting for a multidimensional approach that is religious and ethical. This multidimensional approach, as defined by William Schweiker, conducts natural law inquiry from a hermeneutical standpoint of moral diversity and democratic pluralism.
The hermeneutical standpoint warrants a historicizing of natural law ethics that is compatible with modern secularity instead of a classicist metaphysical worldview. To achieve this task, the …
The Sutra Of The Lotus Flower Of The Wonderful Dharma Speaks: A Critical Examination Of Mahayana Buddhist Literature Via The Eastern Lens, Erin Lyn Lauer
The Sutra Of The Lotus Flower Of The Wonderful Dharma Speaks: A Critical Examination Of Mahayana Buddhist Literature Via The Eastern Lens, Erin Lyn Lauer
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
My time researching and writing on the Lotus Sutra has been an enjoyable experience, granting me an extended opportunity to academically investigate one Buddhist sutra in a meaningful and thorough manner. As I wrote my thesis, many of my peers asked why I chose a Buddhist text to analyze, as it seemed so "unusual," or "weird" to them that I would select a work so "obscure" and "unknown". After hearing these curious comments, I explained several basic concepts of the Buddhist tradition to them, such as the word "sutra" means scripture or that "Buddha Sak.yamuni" is the historical founder of …

(Dis)Continuity Between Sikhism And Islam: The Development Of Hukam Across Religions, Mark Horowitz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of the Sikh concept of hukam, which is usually translated as a divine command or order. The concept is prominently featured in the Sikh sacred scripture (Guru Granth) and is an important aspect of daily ritual life for the Sikhs. The goal of this study is to provide initial insight into how the concept developed in the Sikh scriptural tradition, as well as the implications that the concept had for the Sikh community. This paper traces the development of hukam from the concepts origin in the Islamic tradition, the writings …
An Analysis Of Origen’S Charismatic Ideology In His Commentary On The Gospel Of John, Kimberly W. Logan-Hudson
An Analysis Of Origen’S Charismatic Ideology In His Commentary On The Gospel Of John, Kimberly W. Logan-Hudson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to examine whether Origen projects a charismatic ideology within his Commentary on the Gospel of John. Five characteristics will be utilized during the process: (1) Charismatic authority is given directly from God and only God; (2) Those who have been chosen sought and maintain the position; (3) Individuals must recognize this authority along with others; (4) Those with charismatic authority must mediate God's word for others; (5) This authority may only belong to individuals within the one body of the church. In analyzing Books 1, 2, 6, and 10 along with these five characteristics, the thesis will …

The Art Of Existentialism: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Norman Mailer And The American Existential Tradition, J'Aimã© L. Sanders
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of my research is to examine the philosophic influences on three literary works: F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Ernest Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon, and Norman Mailer's An American Dream. Through an investigation of biographical, historical, cultural, and textual evidence, I will argue for the influence of several European philosophers---Friedrich Nietzsche, Søren Kierkegaard, and Martin Heidegger---on these authors and on the structures and messages of their works. I will discuss how the specific works I have selected not only reveal each author's apt understanding of the existential-philosophical crises facing the individual in the twentieth century, but also …
The Proliferating Sacred: Secularization And Postmodernity, Donald Surrency
The Proliferating Sacred: Secularization And Postmodernity, Donald Surrency
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When analyzing the role religion plays in contemporary American society, one is forced to address the notion of secularization. This is a term that broadly refers to the marginalization of religious influence in culture and society that began at the outset of the Enlightenment, sometime during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but, as Peter Berger argues, can actually be traced back to the times of the great Israelite prophets who emerged during the Axial Age (800-200 BCE). Throughout the available literature, proponents of the secularization thesis extend the marginalization of religious influence from the societal level to the level of …

Cicero And St. Augustine's Just War Theory: Classical Influences On A Christian Idea, Berit Van Neste
Cicero And St. Augustine's Just War Theory: Classical Influences On A Christian Idea, Berit Van Neste
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The theology of Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, and the origin of his theory of Just War are subjects of serious scholarly debate. Just War involved the use of the state army to eliminate heresy by killing heretics who refused to convert to mainstream Christianity. The purpose of this paper is to argue that Augustine primarily based his theory of Just War on Cicero's own theory of Just War.
Augustine was quite heavily influenced by Cicero. He credited Cicero with his own conversion to Christianity. He drew heavily from Cicero's works as a basis for many of his own writings, …
The Middle-Class Religious Ideology And The Underclass Struggle: A Growing Divide In Black Religion, Franklin Hills Jr.
The Middle-Class Religious Ideology And The Underclass Struggle: A Growing Divide In Black Religion, Franklin Hills Jr.
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The trajectory of religious phenomena has been to give a reflective, yet
formative understanding of the ethos endemic to a culture. Pursuant to this
thought, the ethos of African American religion can rightfully be described as a
religious sociological construct, mired in a myriad of changes. These changes
have had a profound effect on how African Americans relate to their God, their
world, and themselves. The chief aim of this enterprise is to chronicle the
transformation of Black Religion in the United States, noting the social and
economic factors that served synergistically to formulate its current mission. I
conclude that …
Intelligent Design And Evolutionary Theory: Legal Battles And Classroom Relevance For School Leadership, Larry R. Plank
Intelligent Design And Evolutionary Theory: Legal Battles And Classroom Relevance For School Leadership, Larry R. Plank
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Evolutionary theory in the scientific curricula of public education has been scrutinized by religious societies for the better part of a century around the globe. Although Darwin’s explanation of the mechanism of evolution—the process of natural selection—is widely accepted by scientists in the United States and other industrialized nations, the U.S. has lagged behind these other countries in accepting evolutionary theory in public school curricula. The debate of what to include in textbooks and classroom lessons is one of America’s most controversial issues. The creationist worldview of life’s origins has been incorporated into science curriculum as a direct challenge to …

The Commodification Of Yoga In Contemporary U.S. Culture, Michelle E. Demeter
The Commodification Of Yoga In Contemporary U.S. Culture, Michelle E. Demeter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Yoga is an increasingly visible and versatile commodity in the United States health market. Though its origins stretch to pre-Vedic India and its traditional religious purpose is linked to Hinduism, it is evident that yoga has undergone much change since its transmission to U.S. culture. In its popular, widespread incarnation in the United States, yoga is not usually learned at the feet of a guru, but at exercise centers and gyms. These secular locales of yoga's practice help define the "yoga phenomenon" in contemporary America. This phenomenon has resulted in yoga's wide acceptance and high visibility in American popular culture …
