Rethinking The Meaning Of Study Abroad Programs: The Learning Experiences Of Two Female Gambian Students In Taiwan, Virginie Marc
Journal of Global Education and Research
This paper is an ethnographic effort which examines the effects of oppression and social inequality on the learning experiences of foreign students in Taiwan, focusing on two female Gambian students. The theoretical frameworks utilized to interpret the learning experiences of these foreign students in Taiwan include Freire’s critical pedagogy, critical travel pedagogy, global citizenship, and experiential learning. Unstructured interviews and observations were selected for data collection, and the findings suggest these international students used their learning experiences as a tool to transform their lives and their perspectives on the future of Gambian society. The findings also show these study abroad …
Self-Regulated Learning Strategies Of Adult Learners Regarding Non-Native Status, Gender, And Study Majors, Xi Lin
Journal of Global Education and Research
The number of adult learners is growing rapidly in the US institutions, and these learners have become an important student population in colleges. Therefore, it is important to understand their learning strategies in order to better assist them to achieve academic goals. Meanwhile, US institutions have dramatically increased the number of international English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Thus, to better understand these students’ learning strategies and help them succeed is a need. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the differences in learning strategies (i.e., cognitive and metacognitive strategies and resource management strategies) of adult learners …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Fatigue is a prominent quality of life concern among cancer patients who have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The high percentage of HCT patients reporting fatigue concerns warrants investigation into factors that may contribute to or alleviate fatigue. The present study sought to elucidate relationships among fatigue and behavioral factors including sleep disruption and sedentary activity.
Method: Allogeneic HCT recipients who were one to five years post-transplant were invited to participate in the present study. Participants wore an actigraph assessing sleep efficiency and sedentary behavior for one week, completed daily assessments of fatigue and sleep during the same …

Evaluation Of The Psychometric Properties Of The Systems Coaching Survey, Sarah E. Thoman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to provide evidence for the reliability and validity of the Systems Coaching Survey (SCS). Systems coaching is an approach to building capacity among groups of educators to drive educational reform efforts by employing seven interdependent sets of skills (interpersonal communication, data-based problem solving, team facilitation, content knowledge dissemination, leadership, professional learning, evaluation). The SCS was designed to measure educators’ skills to facilitate implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). The 41-item survey was piloted nationally in the spring of 2017 by 1,060 educators across 180 schools in six U.S. states who had responsibilities for facilitating MTSS …

Using A Stress Process Model To Examine Longitudinal Racial Differences In Well-Being And Health: Results From A Population-Based Study Of Caregiving, Adrian N. S. Badana
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the older adult population of the United States increases over the next decade, many family caregivers will be needed to provide care for aging loved ones. The growing diversity of the population may also mean that more racial/ethnic minority caregivers will be providing care to older family members. Most of the studies examining race and caregiving have focused on racial differences in stress, coping, well-being and health among White and Black family caregivers. However, previous research examining racial differences in caregiving has often been limited to smaller convenience samples of caregivers, which limit generalizability of study findings. In this …

Examining Efl Learners’ Reading Comprehension: The Impact Of Metacognitive Strategies Discussion And Collaborative Learning Within Multimedia E-Book Dialogic Environments, Abrar H. Alsofyani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For most English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, both reading and comprehension skills are challenging to acquire. EFL students find reading challenging due to their inability to comprehend and interpret text information, which may lead, at times, to demotivation and loss of interest. The current study intends to explore how Saudi EFL learners may better tackle reading comprehension challenges by examining the utilization of metacognitive reading strategies through discussion and extensive collaborative learning activities within a multimedia e-book dialogic environment. Accordingly, the study investigates the impact of teaching metacognitive strategy-based discussion and collaborative learning on students’ application of the …

Analyzing The Sentiment Of The New York Times, Luke Daniel Cross
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Our era of click bait, fake news and politicized media has cast a critical spotlight onto deceptively structured headlines and how they influence readership. Much of the existing research delves into the implications of phrasing on article headlines -- it is common to find that even minor shifts in the focus of a headline alters what aspects of the article are remembered. While this is a prime example of the need for conscientious, accurate reporting, it offers little for journalists already taking steps to ensure precise diction and clarity. Instead of analyzing how a misleading headline explicitly alters the way …
State Emotion Regulation As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between State Attachment Security And State Mindfulness, Jamie Onufrak, Lindsey M. Rodriguez, Dimitra Dimopoulos
State Emotion Regulation As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between State Attachment Security And State Mindfulness, Jamie Onufrak, Lindsey M. Rodriguez, Dimitra Dimopoulos
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Adult attachment theory. Adult attachment theory is a conceptual framework that describes the dynamics of ones actions in interpersonal relationships (Hazen and Shaver, 1987).
Mindfulness is “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally” and “the self-regulation of attention and the non-evaluative acceptance of one’s immediate experiences” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p.14).
Emotion regulation refers to the ability to influence, experience and express emotions in a manner that is conducive to one’s well-being (Gross, 1998).
There is a large body of correlational research demonstrating a positive correlation between attachment security and mindfulness. However, there are no …

Indeed, the use of robots that process data remotely causes privacy concerns. There are some main factors that could increase the capability of violating users’ privacy. Here we analyze these factors and propose solutions that assist in mitigating the problem of privacy violation while using social robots. These solutions assist in solving the limitations of current robots …
Sharing Tracks With High Speed Trains In Urban Areas – Risk Due To Drivers And Pedestrian, Oren Masory
Sharing Tracks With High Speed Trains In Urban Areas – Risk Due To Drivers And Pedestrian, Oren Masory
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Sharing operations of high-speed passenger and heavy freight on the same rail tracks presents additional risks to vehicle and pedestrians who cross the tracks. This is due to increase in rail traffic at crossing; users overestimate the amount of time they have to cross in front of a higher speed train, since they are used to interacting with slower conventional trains; track circuited crossings are not adaptable and might lead to confusion and bad decisions. This paper discusses few issues related to human perception which contribute to accidents in this case.
Using Artificial Intelligence To Understand Industry Trends In Logo Design, Austin Lubetkin
Using Artificial Intelligence To Understand Industry Trends In Logo Design, Austin Lubetkin
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Logos are a commonplace element of graphic design employed by most major companies. These companies extensively research the psychological implications of their logos to create a perception of their brand identity. Consumers have been trained to understand or identify relevant information about a company from their logo. A common example is how a consumer can identify a fast food logo by the prevalence of the colors red and yellow. By using a known parameter like the type of industry of a company, this paper explores the possibility of building a computer vision classifier of logos by industry. The source of …

Efl Student Collaborative Writing In Google Docs: A Multiple Case Study, Quang Nam Pham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The development of modern technology has presented new opportunities for language instruction. In recent years, technology-mediated collaborative writing has received great attention in research literature. The constraints and affordances of some tools, such as Wikispaces and Google Docs for collaborative writing have been explored. Although wiki-based collaborative writing have been conducted in a variety of contexts, studies in Google Docs-based collaborative writing in English as Foreign Language (EFL) contexts are underrepresented in research literature.
To contribute to research diversity, I conducted a dissertation study in an English for Specific Purposes class at a university in southern Vietnam. Sociocultural Theory and …

Mobilizing Images Of Black Pain And Death Through Digital Media: Visual Claims To Collective Identity After “I Can’T Breathe”, Aryn Kelly
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the wake of Eric Garner’s 2014 public execution at the hands of NYPD officers, online spaces such as Twitter saw an influx of remediated imagery referencing Ramsey Orta’s bystander cell phone video of Garner’s death. These images often explicitly reference the chokehold that killed Garner and/or they reappropriate Garner’s last words: “I can’t breathe.” To what formal dimensions in Orta’s video are these remediated images responding? What broader cultural work is the creation of these images doing?
In this project, I regard Orta’s video as the point of entry for considering the cultural work of remediating images from it, …

Health Information Barriers, Weight Status, And Health Behaviors Among Cancer Survivors: Exploring The Moderating Effects Of Race And Ethnicity, Jennifer L. Barinas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is an increasing need for research addressing the health concerns faced in cancer survivorship. Research has indicated that racial and ethnic minority cancer survivors are at increased risk for negative health outcomes, and some findings suggest that health literacy may play a role. Yet, few studies have explored how relations among heath information barriers, weight status, and health behaviors may differ by race and ethnicity in cancer survivors. Objectives: 1) To explore whether health information barriers are associated with weight status, cigarette use, and alcohol use among cancer survivors, 2) To explore the moderating role of race and ethnicity …
Illuminating Changes In Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions About Teaching Elementary Mathematicsin An Introductory Methods Course, Elaine Cerrato
Illuminating Changes In Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions About Teaching Elementary Mathematicsin An Introductory Methods Course, Elaine Cerrato
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Producing highly skilled elementary mathematics teachers capable of facilitating mathematics learning in ways aligned with The Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000) and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM), is a common objective of teacher preparation programs (National Governors Association & Chief Council of State School Officers, 2010). After decades of effort, Brown (2003) argues, teachers continue to teach in the way they were taught; thus, they disregard mathematics standards. As Abell, Appleton, and Hanuscin (2010) note, students’ preexisting ideas relevant to the nature of learning and teaching stem from experiences in their schooling, life, and …
A Functional Approach To Bullying Prevention And Reduction: The Development And Evaluation Of The Functional Behavior Assessment For Bullying-Behavior In Schools (Fabb-S), Lindsey Slattery
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Bullying is reported to be one of the most prevalent forms of violence in schools and has negative health, financial, and social outcomes. Researchers define bullying as (a) aggressive behavior that is (b) repeated over time and that involves (c) a real/ perceived imbalance of power. The literature on bullying is limited due to the absence of functional behavior assessment procedures and individualized interventions for bullying behaviors. Study 1 developed the Functional Assessment of Bullying Behaviors in Schools (FABB-S) tool. Following expert review 21 items were found to have content validity. Following revision, the items were reviewed by child work …
Palatable Shades Of Gender: Status Processes At The Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Team Formation, Jasmón L. Bailey
Palatable Shades Of Gender: Status Processes At The Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Team Formation, Jasmón L. Bailey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the importance of studying how race and gender influence partner selection processes of team formation. Stratified social systems influence the choice and decision-making behaviors that shape group and team formation (Hechter 1978). By testing Skvoretz’s and Bailey’s (2016) formal theory of team formation choice processes derived from expectation states theory, the dissertation aims to understand how race and gender influence a person’s choice and decision-making with respect to forming a group of problem-solving teammates. Through a quasi-experimental research design, subjects participate in simulated interactive environments in which they can select and personalize self-represented avatars and then choose …
When Faced With A Democracy: Political Socialization Of First-Generation Ethnic Russian Immigrants In Central And South Florida, Marina Seraphine Mendez
When Faced With A Democracy: Political Socialization Of First-Generation Ethnic Russian Immigrants In Central And South Florida, Marina Seraphine Mendez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
It is a qualitative study about political socialization of first-generation ethnic Russian immigrants in Central and South Florida. The method used is a constructivist grounded theory with two-level coding. Based on data collected in forty in-depth interviews, I constructed a model of political socialization. It incorporates a starting point (the legal status in the US), triggers (English language proficiency, spousal support, and parenting), political socialization agencies (English as Second Language classes, a spouse, volunteering, the church) and output structures (bureaucratic institutions). Using respondents’ opinions about American vs. Russian political systems and mass media, their political participation, and views about political …
Cognitivism In School Psychologists’ Talk About Cultural Responsiveness: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Sujay Sabnis
Cognitivism In School Psychologists’ Talk About Cultural Responsiveness: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Sujay Sabnis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although there is an increase in publications on the topic of cultural responsiveness in school psychology, the research literature does not interrogate the discourse around cultural responsiveness and the modes of practices it enables. Using a preexisting dataset featuring interviews with 15 school psychologists, I analyzed the discursive formations characterizing the talk about cultural responsiveness. Data analysis using the critical discursive psychology framework illuminated the presence of cognitivism in participant talk. Critical discourse analysis drawing on Foucauldian theory of power effects revealed the ways in which cognitivism both enabled and constrained the discursive production of ‘culture’ and ‘cultural responsiveness’. Culture …

Right-Wing, Nationalist Discourses And Counter-Discourses On Twitter During The European Migrant Crisis, Ramona Kreis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines right-wing, nationalist-conservative discourses on Twitter. Specifically, this study explores the features of right-wing discourses and counter-discourses in the context of the European migrant crisis in 2015 and the terrorist attack in Berlin, Germany, in 2016. Informed by critical discourse analysis and multimodal discourse analysis, the analysis focuses on discursive strategies and semiotic and multimodal resources found in tweets that either endorse or challenge anti-refugee stances during the aforementioned time frames. Additionally, this study explores to what extent the platform-specific technological affordances facilitate dialogic interaction between users who express right-wing opinions and users who challenge right-wing discourses.
