What Factors Affect Entrepreneurial Intention In Sharing Accommodations? The Application Of The Entrepreneurial Event Model, Jaewook Kim, Liang(Rebecca) Tang, Xi Wang, Linan Zhang

Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism

Hosts of sharing accommodation platforms are considered an evolving mode of entrepreneurs. This study aimed to examine the relationship among entrepreneurship capital (EC), perceived feasibility (PF), perceived desirability (PD), and entrepreneurial intention (EI) in sharing lodging by using the entrepreneurial event (SEE) model. Particularly, EC was evaluated as a second-order factor with four first-order sub-variables: financial, social, intellectual, and human capital (HC). Data were collected from online surveys completed by 328 respondents. Second-order factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used in the analysis. Results confirmed that all four sub-variables contributed to inclusive capital. Inclusive capital positively influenced PF and …

Do Suicide Attempt Survivors Have Reduced Long-Term Well-Being? A Study Of Veterans Across Three Nationally Representative Cohorts, Bradley A. Brown Jan 2022

Do Suicide Attempt Survivors Have Reduced Long-Term Well-Being? A Study Of Veterans Across Three Nationally Representative Cohorts, Bradley A. Brown

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Prior suicide attempts are known to elevate the risk for re-attempting suicide and death by suicide. However, most people who attempt suicide will neither die by suicide nor re-attempt suicide. Establishing comprehensive knowledge about the prognosis of suicide attempts would be valuable for multiple stakeholders, including suicide attempt survivors, their loved ones, and mental health professionals treating suicidal patients. Nearly all work on functioning after a non-fatal suicide attempt centers on elevated risk, and the effects of a suicide attempt on long-term psychological well-being are unknown. The present study addressed this gap in the literature by comparing psychological well-being among …

A Principal's Story Of Leadership: The Evolution Of School Culture In A School For Gifted Education, Lori Wiley Jan 2022

A Principal's Story Of Leadership: The Evolution Of School Culture In A School For Gifted Education, Lori Wiley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A school’s culture evolves over time and guides the ways in which those who interact within the school think, feel, and act. It is grounded in shared meanings, foundational beliefs, and value systems created by a school (Deal & Peterson, 2009). The principal plays a key and critical role in influencing and shaping school culture. The literature representing gifted education, school culture, and the role of the principal in shaping school culture is substantial; however, there is a gap in the literature that explores the role of the principal in gifted education and how the principal might shape the culture …

Educating Consumers And Producers Of Data: Review Of Making Sense Of Numbers By Jane E. Miller (2022), Andrew J. Miller Jan 2022

Educating Consumers And Producers Of Data: Review Of Making Sense Of Numbers By Jane E. Miller (2022), Andrew J. Miller

Numeracy

Author Jane E. Miller has brought her considerable experience writing and teaching about numerate communication to a new textbook, Making Sense of Numbers. Miller uses clear prose, timely and authentic examples, and thought-provoking exercises to educate the next generation of consumers and producers of data, students in introductory quantitative reasoning, research methods, or data analysis courses. While the textbook does not fit the mold of a "typical" quantitative literacy course, creative instructors may find ways to use it in innovative quantitative literacy, data literacy, or introductory data science courses.

Numeracy And Financial Wellbeing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nora Wikoff Jan 2022

Numeracy And Financial Wellbeing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Nora Wikoff

Numeracy

This paper examines the role of numeracy in smoothing financial difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that numeracy was associated with a 30% reduction in late or non-payment of bills and a 20% reduction in the odds of feeling financially squeezed. The effect of numeracy on financial wellbeing was remarkably consistent across levels of education, ethnicity, and gender, suggesting that improving numeracy levels in the population may be an effective strategy to increase financial capability across the board. However, while numerate individuals were less likely to experience financial difficulty, high numeracy did not predict narrower gaps between Whites …

Building A Social And Academic Online Bridge To Quantitatively-Rich College Coursework, Melissa Eblen-Zayas, Lin Winton

Numeracy

We describe the online summer portion of a quantitative skills bridge program focused on helping students prepare socially and academically for the transition to college. College students are increasingly asked to employ quantitative skills across the curriculum, but students arrive at college with varied preparation. Further, those with the least preparation often encounter other challenges to social belongingness and navigating their institution. In response to these needs, our institution developed a bridge program aimed at students with a broad range of interests -- not just STEM, and the program has a significant focus on community-building as well as strengthening quantitative …

Conclusion: Words Of Passion, Laura Runge Jan 2022

Conclusion: Words Of Passion, Laura Runge

QUANTITATIVE LITERARY ANALYSIS OF THE WORKS OF APHRA BEHN - Datasets

Chapter Abstract

The book ties the thematic threads of the chapters together with an analysis of the words of passion in Behn’s complete oeuvre. In addition to love, the word that ties the book together, Behn’s literary works explore more negative than positive passions with a focus on nervous states of apprehension, fear, doubt and sometimes hope. She also showcases violent, dangerous and extreme passions, hate, revenge and rage. The concordance data reveals, however, that Behn’s passions operate within a moral universe of Christian values where sin and guilt shadow behaviors stimulated by passion. What …

Objectives Patients with tuberculosis (TB) generally are instructed to isolate at the beginning of treatment in order to prevent disease transmission. The duration of isolation varies and may be prolonged (ie, lasting 1 month or more). Few studies have examined the impact of isolation during TB treatment on adolescents, who may be more vulnerable to its negative effects.

Methods This study took place from 2018 through 2019 in Lima, Peru, where the Ministry of Health mandates the exclusion of patients with TB from educational institutions for at least 2 months. Using semi-structured guides, we conducted individual in-depth interviews with adolescents …

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Despite a nonmarital birth rate of 70% for non-Hispanic Black women in the United States, there is a dearth of research on culturally grounded coparenting interventions for unmarried Black families with infants. Accordingly, this randomized controlled trial investigated one-year post-partum child and family outcomes of a novel modest dosage (6 session) Focused Coparenting Consultation (FCC) offered prenatally. One-hundred-thirty-eight families led by unmarried Black coparents were randomized to an intervention (N=70) or Treatment-As-Usual (TAU; control) condition (N=68). TAU families received navigational support in accessing existing community services for pregnant and parenting families. Intervention families also received TAU along with 6 dyadic …

Originating in ancient India, Ayurveda is an alternative medicinal approach that provides substantial evidence for a theoretical-level analysis of all aspects of life. Unlike modern medicine, Ayurveda is based upon tridoshas (Vata, pitta, and Kapha) and Prakriti. On the other hand, the research of all the genes involved at the proteomics, metabolomics, and transcriptome levels are referred to as genomics. Geoclimatic regions (deshanupatini), familial characteristics (kulanupatini), and ethnicity (jatiprasakta) have all been shown to affect phenotypic variability. The combination of genomics with Ayurveda known as ayurgenomics provided new insights into tridosha that may pave the way for precision medicine (personalized …

Arrow Of Time, Entropy, And Protein Folding: Holistic View On Biochirality, Victor V. Dyakin, Vladimir N. Uversky

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Chirality is a universal phenomenon, embracing the space–time domains of non-organic and organic nature. The biological time arrow, evident in the aging of proteins and organisms, should be linked to the prevalent biomolecular chirality. This hypothesis drives our exploration of protein aging, in relation to the biological aging of an organism. Recent advances in the chirality discrimination methods and theoretical considerations of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics clarify the fundamental issues, concerning the biphasic, alternative, and stepwise changes in the conformational entropy associated with protein folding. Living cells represent open, non-equilibrium, self-organizing, and dissipative systems. The non-equilibrium thermodynamics of cell biology are …

Fundamental Clock Of Biological Aging: Convergence Of Molecular, Neurodegenerative, Cognitive And Psychiatric Pathways: Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics Meet Psychology, Victor V. Dyakin, Nuka V. Dyakina-Fagnano, Laura B. Mcintire, Vladimir N. Uversky

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

In humans, age-associated degrading changes, widely observed in molecular and cellular processes underly the time-dependent decline in spatial navigation, time perception, cognitive and psychological abilities, and memory. Cross-talk of biological, cognitive, and psychological clocks provides an integrative contribution to healthy and advanced aging. At the molecular level, genome, proteome, and lipidome instability are widely recognized as the primary causal factors in aging. We narrow attention to the roles of protein aging linked to prevalent amino acids chirality, enzymatic and spontaneous (non-enzymatic) post-translational modifications (PTMs SP), and non-equilibrium phase transitions. The homochirality of protein synthesis, resulting in the steady-state non-equilibrium condition …

Big Data Visualization Through The Lens Of Peirce’S Visual Sign Theory, Alon Friedman, Martin Thellefsen Jan 2022

Big Data Visualization Through The Lens Of Peirce’S Visual Sign Theory, Alon Friedman, Martin Thellefsen

School of Information Faculty Publications

Data from social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, are generated by people who produce, spread, share, or exchange multimedia content. Such content may include text, images, sounds, or videos. To derive insight into the behavior of social media users, researchers often use open-source technologies to visualize data and generate models for data analytics. One of the most popular open-source applications for managing and analyzing social media data is the open-source R programming language. Friedman and Feichtinger (2017) created an R package termed ‘Peirce’s sign theory R package’ to analyze data using Peirce’s principles of discovery. Though Peirce semiotics …

Is Outdoor Recreation Associated With Greater Climate Change Concern In The United States?, Kyle W. Knight, Feng Hao Jan 2022

Is Outdoor Recreation Associated With Greater Climate Change Concern In The United States?, Kyle W. Knight, Feng Hao

Sociology Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

There has been extensive research on the association between environmental attitudes and outdoor recreation (or nature-based leisure activities) since the 1970s. There is now considerable evidence to support the claim that spending time in nature leads to greater connectedness to nature and thereby greater pro-environmental attitudes and behavior. However, there is an absence of research focused specifically on the association between outdoor recreation and concern for climate change, which is arguably the most pressing environmental problem facing the world today. We build on previous research by using the 2021 General Social Survey and structural equation modeling to analyze the association …

Despite the importance of faculty diversity training for advancing an inclusive society, little research examines whether participation improves inclusion perceptions and belongingness. Integrating training and diversity education literature concepts, this study examines the effectiveness of training targeting microaggressions in six STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) oriented departments at a research-intensive university. Reactions data collected at the end of face-to-face training suggested that participation generally increased inclusion understanding. Self-assessments on inclusion concepts collected from 45% of participants before and three weeks after training suggest participation increases perceptions of the importance of inclusion, microaggression allyship awareness, inclusive behaviors, and organizational identification. Enacting Economic Resilience: A Synthesis Of Economic And Communication Frameworks, Timothy Betts, Patrice M. Buzzanell

Communication Faculty Publications

This work examines three frameworks for responding to economic disruption: risk mitigation, systemic recovery, and economic resilience. Specifically, by reviewing the metatheoretical commitments, analytic contexts, and implications of two economic perspectives, represented by risk mitigation and systemic recovery, we argue that current approaches to understanding resilience in academic economics have failed to address ongoing and emergent disruptions in the economic and social world. In response, this work also reviews a possible synthesis of economic and communication frameworks. This review places the economic resilience framework, inspired by the communication theory of resilience, in conversation with extant literature in economics, communication studies, …

Discourse Of Gaming: A Conceptual Framework Of Gaming As An Interpretive Community, Gregory P. Perreault, Teresa Lynch Jan 2022

Discourse Of Gaming: A Conceptual Framework Of Gaming As An Interpretive Community, Gregory P. Perreault, Teresa Lynch

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

Situating gaming as a cultural practice aimed at con-structing issues of power through cultural discussions necessitates a framework of discourse of gaming to explain how meanings around gaming practice develop. Built on the premise that gaming offers mul-timodal opportunities for interaction, we introduce the discourse of gaming framework to connect pro-cesses of boundary work, definition making, and legit-imization to the activities of gaming, the gamer’s identity, and the consequences of gaming. Through a survey of Reddit gaming fan communities, discourse of gaming here reflects the power perceived outsiders (e.g., journalists, academics, and politicians) have on shaping the discourse.

Field Insurgency In Lifestyle Journalism: How Lifestyle Journalists Marginalize Instagram Influencers And Protect Their Autonomy, Gregory P. Perreault, Folker Hanusch

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

While Facebook and Twitter have received significant scholarly attention for their role in shaping the journalistic field, Instagram has received sparse attention in comparison. The present study examines how lifestyle journalists (n = 63) from Austria and the United States perceive Instagram influencers operating in relation to the journalistic field. Instagram influencers, empowered by the digital medium, would seem to be in direct competition with lifestyle journalists in terms of content. Through the theoretical lenses of boundary work and field, this study argues that lifestyle journalists—long relegated to the periphery of the journalistic field—discursively leverage the presence of influencers …

What Does It Mean To Be A Female Character In “Indie” Game Storytelling? Narrative Framing And Humanization In Independently Developed Video Games, Mildred F. Perreault, Gregory P. Perreault, Andrea Suarez Jan 2022

What Does It Mean To Be A Female Character In “Indie” Game Storytelling? Narrative Framing And Humanization In Independently Developed Video Games, Mildred F. Perreault, Gregory P. Perreault, Andrea Suarez

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications

Video games have long held a spotty history in their narratives regarding women. Most research has examined large budget games and identified issues of simplification, oversexualization, and a general lack of agency among female characters. The present study explores the gaming niche of “indie”—or independent game developer—video games in their representations of women in particular with Never Alone, Gone Home, and Her Story. These games were released around the time frame of the GamerGate controversy—a controversy which drew attention to the treatment of women in gaming culture—and hence, the games are used to reflect on a potential shift in games …

Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, has resulted in over six million deaths worldwide. Millions of people who survived this SARS-CoV-2 infection show a number of post-COVID complications. Although, the comorbid conditions and post-COVID complexities are to some extent well reviewed and known, the impact of COVID-19 on pre-existing congenital anomalies and genetic diseases are only documented in isolated case reports and case series, so far. In the present review, we analyzed the PubMed indexed literature published between December 2019 and January 2022 to understand this relationship from various points of view, such as susceptibility, …
