Mycorrhizal Abundance In Aerial Versus Terrestrial Roots Among The Climbing Araceae Of The Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2007, Sydney Glassman

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Climbing plants of the family Araceae are a prominent feature of the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Aerial and terrestrial roots were collected from two species of climbing aroids Syngonium sp A (n = 15) and Philodendron aurantifolium (n = 17) and analyzed for mycorrhizae presence and abundance. Evidence of mycorrhizae infection was found in every plant sampled, and percent abundance of mycorrhizae in the aerial roots of Syngonium sp A ranged from 7.9-90%, while the mycorrhizal cover ranged from 5.3-38% in terrestrial roots. Mycorrhizal cover in the aerial roots of P. aurantifolium ranged from 8.2-57%, and from 4-33% …

Structural Equation Model Of Exercise In Women Utilizing The Theory Of Unpleasant Symptoms And Social Cognitive Variables, Sarah Elizabeth Cobb Apr 2007

Structural Equation Model Of Exercise In Women Utilizing The Theory Of Unpleasant Symptoms And Social Cognitive Variables, Sarah Elizabeth Cobb

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A dramatic decline in physical activity levels occurs from adolescence to young adulthood. Those who were sedentary as adolescents tend to maintain a sedentary lifestyle. Women are particularly vulnerable to the effects of a sedentary lifestyle because of the risk for cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this research was to test a theoretical model of exercise in adolescent and young adult women using the theory of unpleasant symptoms with social cognitive variables and then to test a revised model that was determined a priori. The central hypotheses were that the relationships as depicted in the proposed theoretical models would be …

Socio-Natural Landscapes In The Palmarejo Valley, Honduras, James R. Hawken Apr 2007

Socio-Natural Landscapes In The Palmarejo Valley, Honduras, James R. Hawken

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Communities have traditionally been viewed as spatially bounded social units composed of multiple households whose inhabitants are integrated by shared resources and a common sense of identity. While investigating resources and identity is useful for archaeological study because of their material correlates, such views of community ultimately fail to acknowledge the dynamic interaction between cultural and environmental forces in shaping and shifting those arrangements over time. This study examines settlement, excavation, and geoarchaeological data from the Palmarejo Valley in northwestern Honduras with the aim of modeling the process of community formation at the intersection of social and natural landscapes in …

Impact Of Area Social Predictors Of Health On Black-White Disparities In Stroke Mortality, Tyra Dark

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the area social predictors of health (ASPoH) and Black-White disparities in stroke mortality relationship. Utilizing stroke mortality data obtained from the Florida Department of Health for years 1998-2002, and social and economic data obtained from the year 2000 Census of Population, this study examined the effect of resource availability at the census tract level on Black-White disparities in stroke mortality. The influence of social class on Black-White disparities in stroke mortality and effect modification by social class of the association between Black-White disparities and ASPoH variables was also investigated. Principal component analysis produced four ASPoH scores from …

Factors Associated With School-Based Mental Health Services Delivered By School Psychologists, Emily Luis Cimino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine factors that relate to the delivery of mental health services by school psychologists using a national database. The relationship between school psychologists' demographic, preparation, and professional context factors (e.g., gender, ethnicity, educational level, percentage of minority students served, years of experience, and students to school psychologist ratio), and the types of mental health services delivered, amount of time invested in such services, and the desirability of school psychologists to provide or not to provide mental health services was addressed. In addition, the percentages of school psychologists who deliver mental health services and …

Relation Between Weight Status, Gender, Ethnicity And The Food And Activity Choices Of 6th And 9th Graders, Heather Leanne Curtiss

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the relationship between the variables weight status (expected weight, at-risk for overweight, and overweight), ethnicity, and gender and the dependent variables dietary intake and physical activity behaviors among adolescents. Data presented in this study were collected using the Nutrition and Exercise Survey for Students, which was completed by 535 6th grade and 9th grade students across 3 middle and 2 high-schools in southwest Florida. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to identify differences in dietary intake and physical activity behaviors between groups.

The primary questions related to interactions and main effects between the variables weight …

Good Girl, Bad Girl: The Role Of Abigail And Jessica In The Jew Of Malta And The Merchant Of Venice, Anna Beskin Mar 2007

Good Girl, Bad Girl: The Role Of Abigail And Jessica In The Jew Of Malta And The Merchant Of Venice, Anna Beskin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In The Jew of Malta and The Merchant of Venice, both Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare question anti-Semitism, Christian presumption, and socially constructed gender roles. Often compared, the two plays have obvious similarities: both plots center on rich, Jewish protagonists---Barabas in The Jew of Malta and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice---who are vilified and then destroyed by a merciless Gentile society. On the surface, the protagonists' daughters---Abigail in The Jew of Malta and Jessica in The Merchant of Venice---also share many similarities. Both are the young, beautiful daughters of rich and much maligned Jews; both love …

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On The Diversity Of Soil-Dwelling Arthropods In The University Of South Florida Ecological Research Area, Tampa, Florida, Celina Bellanceau

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Leaf litter samples were used to study arthropod diversity in the University of South Florida Ecological Research Area. Arthropods were collected from different plots of different prescribed burn frequencies (1year, 2 year, 5 year, 7 year and no burn frequencies). Differential responses of arthropods to burn frequency were studied. It was expected that burn frequency would affect arthropod richness and diversity and that the pattern of diversity and richness would follow the Intermediated Disturbance Hypothesis. It was also expected that richness and diversity would be correlated with the amount of leaf litter present. Preliminary results suggest that there are short-term …

Tool-Related Cognition In New Caledonian Crows., Lucas A. Bluff, Alex A.S. Weir, Christian Rutz Jan 2007

Tool-Related Cognition In New Caledonian Crows., Lucas A. Bluff, Alex A.S. Weir, Christian Rutz

KIP Articles

The extent to which non-humans understand their physical world is controversial, due to conceptual and empirical difficulties. We examine the evidence for physical understanding in the remarkable tool-oriented behaviour of New Caledonian crows, which make several types of tool in the wild and show prolific tool-related behaviour in captivity. We summarize our own research into the cognitive processes involved in tool behaviour in this species, and review comparable studies in other birds and primates. Our main laboratory findings are: tool-related behaviour emerges in juvenile crows that had no opportunity to learn from others; adult crows can make or select tools …

Influence Of Hunter Adaptability On Resilience Of Subsistence Hunting Systems, Todd J. Brinkman, Gary P. Kofinas, F. Stuart Chapin Iii, David K. Person Jan 2007

Influence Of Hunter Adaptability On Resilience Of Subsistence Hunting Systems, Todd J. Brinkman, Gary P. Kofinas, F. Stuart Chapin Iii, David K. Person

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The capacity of hunters to shape the fundamental properties of their lifestyle at times when extrinsic factors change the availability of subsistence foods is critical to subsistence cultures. Recent changes in deer hunting on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska illustrate the social-ecological challenges to the resilience of a rural subsistence hunting system and raise the broader question of whether efficient hunting strategies necessarily enhance resilience. During the latter half of the 20th century, indigenous people of Alaska’s Prince of Wales Island adapted to changing subsistence opportunities by capitalizing on increased availability of deer due to clearcut logging and the construction …

Differentiating Livelihood Strategies Among The Luo And Kipsigis People In Western Kenya , Mary Nyasimi, Lorna Michael Butler, Lee Burras, Hsain Ilahiane, Richard Schultz, Jan Flora

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Rural communities of sub-Saharan Africa are under increasing adaptive pressure resulting from decline in the quality of land resources. To increase food, generate income, and safeguard against risks and shocks, families are engaging in multiple livelihood strategies. This study was conducted to: 1) evaluate livelihood strategies; 2) examine the dynamic diversification process in the agrarian and non-agrarian continuum; and 3) investigate how type and availability of assets influences choice of a livelihood strategy. Results from our investigation in western Kenya suggest that as land is subjected to degradation, there is a shift in the type of assets that families can …

Ict Infrastructures In The Aging Society, J. E.M.H. Bronswijk, William D. Kearns, L. R. Normie

Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications

As Information and Communication Technology (ICT) penetrates dwellings worldwide, also the increasing number of older persons will become more dependent on information technology infrastructures. While ICT continues to advance quickly, the ergonomic refinement for use by older adults has lagged behind. In addition, technical problems exist, partly resulting from designers’ frequent use of proprietary products having little or no interoperability with products of other vendors. Fortunately, standards are emerging to address this problem; the cellular phone appears to be evolving into the general user interface for all, including older adults, and the addition of networking to ICT will significantly enhance …

Two aspects of these developments are described along with their implications for gerontechnology. First, international high speed Internet networks serving the academic community are reviewed, acknowledging that today’s academic networks are poised to inform the public’s computer networks of tomorrow. Second, computational systems that increasingly penetrate every facet of the built environment, for instance, clothing, furnishings, personal items, transportation and home environmental control and security are described. Over time such embedded systems are integrated into large wired and wireless networks of devices which may extend over …

The Muduga And Kurumba Of Kerala, South India And The Social Organization Of Hunting And Gathering, George Tharakan C. Jan 2007

The Muduga And Kurumba Of Kerala, South India And The Social Organization Of Hunting And Gathering, George Tharakan C.

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article examines the subsistence practices among the Muduga and Kurumba of Attappady in Kerala paying close attention to the socio-ecological basis of their economic activities. This facilitates an understanding of the close relationship between the distribution of natural and cultural communities, and the way in which the society is organized to reach a successful accommodation of a specific set of environmental needs. The data presented relate to wild and domesticated food products and the kin and social systems employed for obtaining them. I conclude that, although hunting and gathering alone could provide a subsistence, in a modern situation, dependence …

A League Of Their Own:Demographics, Motivations And Patterns Of Use Of 1,955 Male Adult Non-Medicalanabolic Steroid Users In The United States, Jason Cohen, Rick Collins, Jack Darkes, Daniel Gwartney

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: Rule violations among elite-level sports competitors and tragedies among adolescents have largely defined the issue of non-medical anabolic-androgenic steroid (NMAAS) use for the public and policy makers. However, the predominant and oft-ignored segment of the NMAAS community exists in the general population that is neither participating in competitive sports nor adolescent. A clearer profile of NMAAS users within the general population is an initial step in developing a full understanding of NMAAS use and devising appropriate policy and interventions. This survey sought to provide a more comprehensive profile of NMAAS users by accessing a large sample of user respondents …

The Impact Of Host Rock Geochemistry On Bacterial Community Structure In Oligotrophic Cave Environments, Hazel A. Barton, Nicholas M. Taylor, Michael P. Kreate, Austin C. Springer, Stuart A. Oehrle, Janet L. Bertog

International Journal of Speleology

Despite extremely starved conditions, caves contain surprisingly diverse microbial communities. Our research is geared toward understanding what ecosystems drivers are responsible for this high diversity. To asses the effect of rock fabric and mineralogy, we carried out a comparative geomicrobiology study within Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, USA. Samples were collected from two different geologic locations within the cave: WF1 in the Massive Member of the Capitan Formation and sF88 in the calcareous siltstones of the Yates Formation. We examined the organic content at each location using liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy and analyzed microbial community structure using molecular phylogenetic analyses. In …
