Age And Sex-Related Activity In White-Nosed Coatis (Nasua Narica), August 2010, Rachel Munro
Age And Sex-Related Activity In White-Nosed Coatis (Nasua Narica), August 2010, Rachel Munro
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The time allocation theory mentions that sociality increases an individual’s fitness because it cannot efficiently forage and watch for predators at the same time on its own, but if in a group vigilance can be shared and time to forage and participate in other activities can be increased, therefore increasing fitness (Caraco, 1979). White-nose coatis,Nasua narica, (Procyonidae) are diurnal and social mammals. Adult females and juveniles live together in bands whereas males are solitary and only join a band when mating. Because and individual cannot perform two activities at once, I studied how age and sex influence how coatis spend …

Malaria In Prehistoric Sardinia (Italy): An Examination Of Skeletal Remains From The Middle Bronze Age, Teddi J. Setzer
Malaria In Prehistoric Sardinia (Italy): An Examination Of Skeletal Remains From The Middle Bronze Age, Teddi J. Setzer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sardinia was an island with a history of a malarious environment until eradication efforts were conducted from 1946 to 1950. While historic documents suggest the disease was introduced from North Africa around 500 BC, no study has been conducted to test for the presence of malaria in prehistoric native populations, such as the Nuragic people of the Bronze Age. However, it has been suggested that aspects of the Nuragic culture, for example the stone structures found throughout the island, are adaptations to a malarious environment. The purpose of this dissertation is to test the hypothesis that malaria was present in …
The Aggregated Influences Of Poverty Impacting Dental Care Access And Oral Health Among Migrant Farmworkers In Tampa, Florida, Nolan Kline
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oral health is an important aspect of overall health, but many vulnerable populations such as migrant farmworkers are without access to oral healthcare. Although some non-government organizations such as faith-based organizations have attempted to fill gaps left by government and private sectors, a lack of a dental safety net creates limited access to oral health services for migrant farmworkers. Access to care is further constrained by structural factors including low wages, migration route, and high costs of care. Building off a critical medical anthropology approach in understanding oral healthcare access, I argue that limited oral health access for migrant workers …
Experimental Translocation Of The Florida Sand Skink (Plestiodon [=Neoseps] Reynoldsi): Success Of A Restricted Species Across Diverse Microhabitats, Nicholas Paul Osman
Experimental Translocation Of The Florida Sand Skink (Plestiodon [=Neoseps] Reynoldsi): Success Of A Restricted Species Across Diverse Microhabitats, Nicholas Paul Osman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The fossorial Florida Sand Skink (Plestiodon [=Neoseps] reynoldsi) inhabits a restricted range of scrub and sandhill fragments on the ridges of central Florida. The high rate of urban and agricultural development in this area necessitates conservation strategies other than land acquisition and management because of the limited remaining Florida Sand Skink habitat available. This study tests the viability of translocation as a conservation strategy for this species and assesses which features of a recipient site contribute to the successful establishment of a population. In 2007, 300 individuals were collected and moved from an intact scrub habitat, …

Increasing Healthy Food Choices In Preschoolers Using Correspondence Training And Recruiting Natural Communities Of Reinforcement, Elyse D. Wiseman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Obesity is a contributing factor to many diseases. Unhealthy food choices are a behavior that can lead to obesity. Teaching children to make healthy food choices at an early age could lead to healthy food choices throughout a lifetime, which would mitigate potential for obesity. A number of different treatments have evaluated healthy food choices in children; however, many did not evaluate or show maintenance effects. The purpose of this study was to utilize correspondence training to acquire healthy food choices in preschoolers and to evaluate of natural communities of reinforcement as a maintenance procedure. Results showed that correspondence training …

Residential Learning Outcomes: Analysis Using The College Student Experiences Questionnaire At A Large Public Research University, Cari Murphy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The creation of learning outcomes inside and outside of the classroom on college campuses has been a growing trend based on a variety of publications which encouraged the fostering of diverse types learning and the measurement of student learning outside of the classroom (ACPA, 1994; Keeling, 2004). The creation of the learning outcomes is a positive step, however, assessment of the learning outcomes must be conducted to determine what students are learning and what areas are to be improved otherwise the learning outcomes are meaningless.
This study was conducted at a large public research university where the Department of Housing …

Proportionality In Middle-School Mathematics Textbooks, Gwendolyn Joy Johnson
Proportionality In Middle-School Mathematics Textbooks, Gwendolyn Joy Johnson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Some scholars have criticized the treatment of proportionality in middle-school textbooks, but these criticisms seem to be based on informal knowledge of the content of textbooks rather than on a detailed curriculum analysis. Thus, a curriculum analysis related to proportionality was needed.
To investigate the treatment of proportionality in current middle-school textbooks, nine such books were analyzed. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade textbooks from three series were used: ConnectedMathematics2 (CMP), Glencoe's Math Connects, and the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP). Lessons with a focus on proportionality were selected from four content areas: algebra, data analysis/probability, geometry/measurement, and rational …
Anthocyanins And Delayed Greening: Inhibition Of Leafcutter Ants (Atta Cephalotes) In Inga Punctata (Mimosaceae) And Zygia Palmana (Fabaceae), May 2010, Antoinette Hertel
Anthocyanins And Delayed Greening: Inhibition Of Leafcutter Ants (Atta Cephalotes) In Inga Punctata (Mimosaceae) And Zygia Palmana (Fabaceae), May 2010, Antoinette Hertel
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Leaves that undergo delayed greening with anthocyanins are suspected of having antiherbivore defenses in addition to low leaf nutrient content. This study examines two species with delayed greening, one with anthocyanins, Zygia palmana, and one without, Inga punctata, to determine whether anthocyanins deter herbivores more than low nutritional quality. Leaf samples were taken from 20 trees in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotinoids and anthocyanins were extracted from leaves and tested for concentrations as well as chemical preference to an herbivore, Atta cephalotes. There was a significant preference for older, fully green leaves in each species (p=.041), as …

Abundance Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae In Epiphytic Orchidaceae: Abiotic, Biotic And Taxonomic Factors, May 2010, Logan E. Smestad
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Despite nutrient stress, not all epiphytes have mycorrhizal associations, including some epiphytic orchids (Lesica & Antibus 1990). In this study epiphytic orchids were collected from tree and limb falls in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, Costa Rica. Abiotic factors such as branch circumference, presence or absence of moss mats, thickness of moss mats, substrate pH and moisture content were measured for their impact on mycorrhizal abundance. Biotic factors such as relative age of the orchid, plant height and the presence or absence of pseudobulbs were also considered. Finally, taxonomic factors were assessed as abundance of mycorrhizae related to the Pleurothallid or …
Crop Size, Ripening, And Fruit Removal In Solanum Umbellatum (Solanaceae) By Phyllostomid Bats, May 2010, Eleanor Caves
Crop Size, Ripening, And Fruit Removal In Solanum Umbellatum (Solanaceae) By Phyllostomid Bats, May 2010, Eleanor Caves
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Effective seed dispersal is of primary importance to most plants. Maximum dispersal should result from a larger fruit crop, since large fruit crops are more obvious to frugivores; however, producing too many fruits can be detrimental to dispersal as it satiates the frugivore. Thus, plants must strike the proper balance to maximize dispersal. I examine the effects of ripe fruit density, ripe fruit number, and fruit crop size within infructescences on fruit removal probabilities (FRPs) of wild Solanum umbellatum in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Further, I examine preferences of frugivorous Phyllostomid bats for various proportions of ripe fruits. Each day, the …
Responses To Prey Size In Metabus Gravidus (Araneae: Araneidae) Provide Evidence For Optimal Foraging, May 2010, Sunjana Supekar
Responses To Prey Size In Metabus Gravidus (Araneae: Araneidae) Provide Evidence For Optimal Foraging, May 2010, Sunjana Supekar
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Foraging strategy is a critical factor in the fitness of many organisms. The optimal foraging theory states that animals optimize their fitness by selecting food that will provide the most amount of nutrition for the least amount of time and energy spent obtaining food. By minimizing energy spent on foraging, organisms can focus on other activities that benefit them, such as watching for predators, looking for mates, or caring for offspring. Because spiders have a very unique method of predation, they are a useful model organism for the study of optimal foraging. Metabus gravidus (Araneae: Araneidae) is a species of …
Importance Of Environmental Education And Knowledge Comparing Grades 9-12 In Monteverde, Costa Rica And Middleton, Wisconsin, Usa, May 2010, Katie Wipfli
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Environmental education is not always a part of school curricula, particularly in the developing world, where population growth and environmental degradation are increase most rapidly. This study takes place in Monteverde, Costa Rica where three local schools with varying levels of environmental education were surveyed. I compared them to a high school in Middleton, Wisconsin to see how Costa Rica and the United States compare. A 20-question survey was used to measure environmental knowledge of students at each school. I found that environmental education is important. Environmental education was an important determinant of environmental awareness and knowledge. Environmental Education, as …

Investigations On Some Zeolitic Volcanic Tuffs From Cluj County (Romania), Used For Zinc Ions Removal From Aqueous Solution, Horea Bedelean, Andrada Maicaneanu, Silvia Burca, Maria Stanca
Studia UBB Geologia
Representative samples of zeolitic tuffs from Măcicaş, Aluniş and Apahida occurrences (Cluj County, Romania) were investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and wet chemical analyses. The studied tuffs samples are mainly represented by vitric and vitric crystal varieties. The mineral assemblage suggests a rhyo-dacitic petrographic type of the volcanic tuff. Diagenetic alteration process in the pyroclastic sequence from this region led to the formation of zeolites, mainly clinoptilolite. The zeolitic tuffs under study can be used in wastewaters treatment to remove Zn2+ ions. Zn2+ removal was performed on some bulk samples: Aluniş (labelled A1), Apahida …

The bioarchaeology of prehistoric south Florida has been an area of archaeological interest for the last century because of the interplay between ancient populations and the unique environment of the Everglades. The purpose of this study is to analyze the pathology, demography and mortuary practice of the ancient Southeast Florida aboriginal population at Miami One to assess the similarity of Miami One to other south Florida populations during the prehistoric period. The Miami One site (8DA11) is one of many related sites located along the shore of the Miami River. It was continuously occupied from the Late Archaic (ca.1000 B.C.) …
Effects Of Fat-Free And 2% Chocolate Milk On Strength And Body Composition Following Resistance Training, Ashley T. Forsyth
Effects Of Fat-Free And 2% Chocolate Milk On Strength And Body Composition Following Resistance Training, Ashley T. Forsyth
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nutrition and recovery go hand in hand. After a resistance training workout, it is extremely important for athletes to rebuild and refuel their bodies with the proper nourishment to obtain maximal results. In doing so, they consume different recovery aids or ergogenic aids for gains in muscle mass, an aid in hydration, and a speedy recovery. Ergogenic aids can include many things (i.e., improved equipment, training program), but one of the most popular types of ergogenic aids is nutritional supplements such as protein, carbohydrates, creatine, and vitamins. A nutritional supplement that has recently grown in popularity is chocolate milk. Currently, …
Effects Of Ingesting Fat Free And Low Fat Chocolate Milk After Resistance Training On Exercise Performance, Breanna Myers
Effects Of Ingesting Fat Free And Low Fat Chocolate Milk After Resistance Training On Exercise Performance, Breanna Myers
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Collegiate athletes are always looking for ways to improve their performance. Resistance training has been incorporated into most collegiate athletic programs for this very reason. In order to improve strength, lean body mass, and exercise performance, resistance exercise and timely protein ingestion must be followed. Incorporating protein ingestion into a resistance training routine has been shown to improve net protein balance. Milk protein is gaining popularity as an ergogenic aid. There has been growing interest in the potential use of bovine milk (cow’s milk) as an exercise beverage, especially during recovery from resistance training and endurance sports. No studies have …
