Home Gardens As Transported Landscapes: Ethnobotanical Encounters With Southeast Asian- American Horticulturists, Lauren A. Munim
Home Gardens As Transported Landscapes: Ethnobotanical Encounters With Southeast Asian- American Horticulturists, Lauren A. Munim
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
This research examines the belief systems, knowledge base and practice of Southeast Asian-Americans residing on the West Coast of Florida. The importance of traditional ecological knowledge in the cultivation of home gardens as relocated venues for cultural preservation of migrant horticulturalists is illustrated. Data collection methods include: participant observations, semi-structured interviews, geospatial mapping, and identification of key food and medicinal plant species. Home gardens serve as reconstructed landscapes for immigrant populations by stimulating cultural preservation of plants used in traditional healing, thus space providing a venue for the intergenerational transfer of traditional knowledge. Transported landscapes require traditional ecological knowledge regarding …
Alternative Food Systems At Ground Level: The Fairbanks Community Garden, Alison M. Meadow
Alternative Food Systems At Ground Level: The Fairbanks Community Garden, Alison M. Meadow
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Alternative food system initiatives are often advocated as ways to meet goals of food security, environmental security, and community well-being. This paper presents data on one form of alternative food system initiative, a community garden, specifically regarding current and potential contributions to food security and social integration. Related to these goals, the most successful aspects of the community garden are provision of space and equipment to people who lacked these resources, as well as the creation of opportunities for a diverse cross-section of the community to develop personal relationships.
Gardening As Ethnographic Research: Volunteering As A Means For Community Access, Andrew Flachs
Gardening As Ethnographic Research: Volunteering As A Means For Community Access, Andrew Flachs
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
This paper shows the ways that ethnographers can develop a more effective qualitative understanding of community gardens by volunteering as gardeners. It explains how volunteering helps gain access to different facets of the garden community. Ultimately, it shows that volunteering can provide an anthropological perspective on the idea, prevalent in the literature, that many people join community gardens only for the economic benefits.

We analyzed the applicability of high-resolution (2)H-HMR spectroscopy for the analysis of microbe metabolism in samples of mitochondrion isolated from rat liver and from aqueous extracts of homogenates of rat liver and other organs and tissues in the presence of high D2O contents. Such analysis is possible due to the fast microbe adaptation to life in the heavy water. It is also shown that some enzymatic processes typical for the intact cells are preserved in the homogenized tissue preparations. The microbial and cellular metabolic processes can be differentiated via the strategic use of cell poisons and antibiotics.

Staphylococcus aureus is a highly virulent and successful pathogen that causes a diverse array of diseases. Recently, an increase of severe infections in healthy subjects has been observed, caused by community-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA). The reason for enhanced CA-MRSA virulence is unclear; however, work suggests that it results from hypersecretion of agr-regulated toxins, including secreted proteases. In this study, we explore the contribution of exo-proteases to CA-MRSA pathogenesis using a mutant lacking all 10 enzymes. We show that they are required for growth in peptide-rich environments, serum, in the presence of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), and in human blood. …

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a rare syndrome of severe inflammatory demyelination of the central nervous system, causing attacks of optic neuritis and transverse myelitis. Although uncommon, attention should be given to the proper identification and management of the affected patients. We present a case of a 13-year-old girl with severe neuromyelitis optica. The patient’s initial presentation consisted of encephalopathy and optic neuritis. Approximately 2 months later, coinciding with the weaning of steroid treatment, she presented with ascending paralysis and respiratory failure. She was seropositive for NMO-IgG. Treatment included intravenous immune globulin, steroids, plasmapheresis, and rituximab and was complemented with proper …
Predictors Of Juvenile Survival In Birds, Terri J. Maness, David J. Anderson
Predictors Of Juvenile Survival In Birds, Terri J. Maness, David J. Anderson
Ornithological Monographs
The survival probability of birds during the juvenile period, between the end of parental care and adulthood, is highly variable and has a major effect on population dynamics and parental fitness. As such, a large number of studies have attempted to evaluate potential predictors of juvenile survival in birds, especially predictors related to parental care. Lack's hypothesis linking body reserves accumulated from parental care to the survival of naive juveniles has organized much of this research, but various other predictors have also been investigated and received some support. We reviewed the literature in this area and identified a variety of …

Of Fur And Fins: Quantifying Fur Trade Era Fish Harvest To Assess Changes In Contemporary Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) Production At Lac La Biche, Alberta, Andrea M. Mcgregor
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
The history of fisheries exploitation in Canada has significant ties to the development and westward expansion of the fur trade. Understanding the scale and nature of this relationship is important when assessing the developmental or evolutionary history of a system. This study uses estimates of human population size and subsistence lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) consumption to estimate annual fish harvest at Lac la Biche, Alberta(54o52'N, 112o05'W) during the fur trade era and to assess the magnitude and potential influence of historic harvest on contemporary harvest potential. Historic (1800-1911) lake whitefish harvest increased approximately 10-fold, from 74,000 kg in 1800 to …

Exploring The Relationship Between Physical Activity And Everyday Cognitive Function In Older Adults: Within- And Between- Person Variability, Christine Haley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that physical activity may play a role in preserving cognitive function in older adulthood. However, the exact nature, direction, and magnitude of observed associations remain unclear. The current study utilized a microlongitudinal design to repeatedly assess cognitive function and physical activity across five days. Two studies examined relationships between physical activity, physical fitness, and cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults. The first study examined associations between baseline performance in a measure of everyday cognition and multiple measures of physical activity and physical fitness. Bivariate analyses revealed that objectively measured physical activity of moderate-to-vigorous intensity, repeated chair stand time …

With tens of thousands of plant species on earth, we are endowed with an enormous wealth of medicinal remedies from Mother Nature. Natural products and their derivatives represent more than 50% of all the drugs in modern therapeutics. Because of the low success rate and huge capital investment need, the research and development of conventional drugs are very costly and difficult. Over the past few decades, researchers have focused on drug discovery from herbal medicines or botanical sources, an important group of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy. With a long history of herbal usage for the clinical management of …

Exercise Barriers In Cancer Survivors: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Morgan Lee
Exercise Barriers In Cancer Survivors: A Multi-Dimensional Approach, Morgan Lee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The population of cancer survivors is rapidly expanding, and promotion of health and quality of life for these individuals is a priority. Exercise confers numerous general and cancer–specific benefits, yet many cancer survivors are insufficiently active. Research on perceived exercise barriers in cancer survivors has been limited by methodological and conceptual problems. Recent research suggests barriers may be multi–dimensional, and different types of barriers may be salient depending on whether or not a person intends to engage in a given behavior. Global (i.e., abstract) barriers may be negatively associated with intention, while practical (i.e., concrete) barriers may be positively associated …
