Initial Findings On Student Progress And Satisfaction In A New Model Of Hyperflexible Online Delivery For University Students, Colin Beer, Kate Ames, Noal Atkinson, Damien Clark, Peter Hosie

Journal of Global Education and Research

University degrees are usually delivered in defined sessions —by term, semester, or in week-based blocks— whereby students are required to complete their studies by the due date. Term or session-based schedules that require students to complete the study within set timeframes are, however, potentially restrictive. Temporal challenges associated with work and life can impede progress and add to the specific problem of student attrition in online learning. As universities seek to deliver innovative options for their students, increased attention is being paid to alternate models of delivery. This paper reports on the development of a hyperflexible online Master of Business …

Determining Students’ Personality Traits According To Parental Perspectives: A Scale Development Study, Cengiz Aglar, Tuncay Dilci

Journal of Global Education and Research

The educational community recognizes individual differences, but it is important to fully address them in educational settings. While there are existing studies on personality traits, none focus on the personality traits of students aged 6-18. This study aims to fill this gap, as personality traits significantly influence personal, academic, and professional life. Understanding student personalities allows for the development of more effective educational programs, facilitating their full potential. The study included parents of 2,229 students from a population of 16,505,271 aged 6-18 in Turkiye. Through exploratory factor analysis (EFA), a reliable 61-item 5-point Likert scale (α = .942) was …

Nurturing A Global Ecojustice Consciousness Among Preservice Teachers Through Critical Place-Based Learning, Greer C. Burroughs, Marissa E. Bellino

Journal of Global Education and Research

Global environmental challenges brought on by over-consumption, limited resources, and climate change will task teacher education programs to prepare teacher candidates with new paradigms in problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation. Skills such as collaborating across cultures and borders, thinking critically and creatively, reflecting on deeply embedded assumptions, and negotiating uncertainty will all be needed to surmount these challenges. EcoJustice education addresses these needs. When combined with critical place-based pedagogies, skills, and attitudes associated with global citizenship may also develop. Four preservice teachers participated in a research trip to Lesvos, Greece, to learn about and aid in the refugee crisis there. Participants …

Financial Characteristics Of Mobile Banking And Payment Users In The United States, Jordan Mitchell, Xiao Li, Doug Steel, Phillip Decker

Journal of Global Business Insights

This study aims to examine the personal finance characteristics of mobile banking and mobile payment users in the United States. To achieve this goal, we used the 2018 National Financial Capability Study, which surveyed over 27,000 American adults regarding their personal financial standing and behaviors. By using ordinary least squares models, our results indicated that the use of mobile banking and mobile payment technology was associated with lower age, Non-White Ethnicity, higher income, higher debt load, debt types (auto, student, credit card, and predatory), and spending more than one’s income. These results reveal that the higher one’s income, financial liabilities, …

Taking Pleasure In Distinction: Unlocking Specialty Coffee Preference, Ondrej Mitas, Danny D. Han, Belle Struijer, Lotte Willems, Thomas H. Chatwick

Journal of Global Business Insights

Specialty coffee, comprising a tenth of the global coffee trade, is distinguished by its strict quality requirements and traceable origins. The diverse flavor profiles of specialty coffee raise demands on providers to serve individual taste preferences. Prior research has not sufficiently explored how to predict customer preferences for specific flavor profiles or how these preferences influence behavioral intentions such as revisiting or recommending a café. This study hypothesized that customer involvement, the extrinsic factors of coffee experience, and culinary risk-taking would predict flavor preference, which would in turn affect behavioral intentions. In an experiment involving 47 participants, individuals tasted and …

Examining Employees Under Stress By Pandemic, Hurricane, And Bridge Closure, Hilmi A. Atadil, Alison J. Green, Nestor M. Arguea

Journal of Global Business Insights

As researchers, recognizing and capturing once-in-a-lifetime events in real-time is essential. The researchers felt compelled to document the impacts of the natural disasters, pandemics, and bridge closures that directly affected the geographical area in which they lived. These sequential crises touched countless lives in the region. Most critically, disseminating and recording these rapid developments has been vital so that others may learn from this time when faced with similar situations. It is the duty of researchers immersed in such extraordinary circumstances to acknowledge and examine the implications in the moment, given the singularity of living through consecutive disasters of this …

Differentiating Magic: A Call For A Differential Approach, Weston L. Wright Feb 2024

Differentiating Magic: A Call For A Differential Approach, Weston L. Wright

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper seeks to propose an alternative approach for studying magic. It is often the case inacademia, when studying magic, scholars use an understanding of modernity which favors a scientific perspective. When doing so, some scholars have concluded magic has become extinct in our modern society; despite recent research suggesting magical practice is thriving. Likewise, this scholarship promotes an idea of magic grounded in fear, ignorance, superstition, and fraudulence. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, I seek to advocate for an approach to magic that allows for a plurality of perspectives to be acknowledged, not just a scientific …

Elucidating The Role Of The Tumor Suppressor Gene Rna-Binding Motif 5 (Rbm5) In Models Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Kara L. Snyder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide health burden that causes death and disability. Clinical management of TBI involves guideline-based protocols to limit secondary brain injury but there remains an unmet need for therapeutics to target neuroprotection and to improve cognitive outcomes in patients. This dissertation concerns the examination of RNA binding motif 5 (RBM5) as a potential therapeutic gene target to promote neuroprotection in models of TBI. RBM5 is a potent pro-death tumor suppressor gene in cancer. We hypothesized that it also promotes cell death in neurons in the brain and therefore its inhibition would decrease neuropathology following CNS …

Rates Of Diagenesis Of Tropical Insectivorous Bat Guano Accumulations: Implications For Potential Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg Feb 2024

Rates Of Diagenesis Of Tropical Insectivorous Bat Guano Accumulations: Implications For Potential Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg

International Journal of Speleology

Cave guano deposits are increasingly being recognized as valuable repositories of paleo-climatic and paleo-environmental information. However, that value is constrained by rates of guano decomposition, and these rates have not been previously well-studied. Here we show that field and laboratory studies of deep insectivorous bat guano sequences in the caves of Borneo demonstrate the extreme dependence of decomposition rate on guano water content. Under tropical conditions, moist guanos exhibit decomposition coefficients (k) values of ~ 0.01, implying the loss of most of the organic content on decadal timescales. Under similar temperatures but drier conditions, k values drop to …

Examining Crises Resilience In Tourism : A Systematic Review Of Literature, Kanyamwa Lunanga Félix, George Ariya, Priscillah Omagwa

Journal of Sustainability and Resilience

This study is the systematic review of literature on the resilience of tourism businesses. Following the various crises and disasters that shook the World between 2000 and 2020, the interest of researchers in tourism resilience has increased significantly. Despite the interest felt by these scientists, the notion of resilience has remained fragmented in terms of its definition and dimensions. This review presents an overview of the literature on the resilience of tourism businesses from 2013 to June 2023. The study revealed that there is a lack of cohesion in the literature on resilience from the definition to its influencing factors. …

In spite of its widespread distribution, little is known about the biology of the Savanna Hawk Buteogallus meridionalis. Due to its opportunistic diet, the potential prey items have not been extensively characterized. We describe here for the first time a predation event on a coral snake (Elapidae) by the Savanna Hawk and discuss its association with a significant increase in the raptor's altitudinal range. The event occurred on a cattle ranch near an old-growth mountain forest at 2,250 m asl in the Venezuelan Andean valley of the Mucujún River. An adult Savanna Hawk preyed upon an adult Red-tail Coral Snake …

Revista Venezolana de Ornitología

Artificial wetlands, such as aquaculture ponds, may act as surrogates of natural wetlands for some shorebirds. We found 26 nests of the Black-necked Stilt Himantopus mexicanus during weekly surveys conducted from June to July 2000 in a shrimp farm in northeastern Venezuela. All nests were located on dikes around production ponds, areas without vegetation, and 24 of the nests were in six loose clusters. Half of the nests (n=13) were built with a combination of woody material and gravel, 31% (n=8) with woody materials, and 19% (n=5) with only gravel. Mean clutch size (n=21) was 3.76 ± 0.83 eggs/nest and …

Revista Venezolana de Ornitología

The Paint-billed Crake Mustelirallus erythrops is a small rail with a wide distribution in South America, including Venezuela. Records of this species are uncommon because it is often hidden among aquatic vegetation. I unexpectedly found a dead individual when I was walking around an important urban route of Caracas on June 24, 2022. The individual was laying on a sidewalk without signs of external traumatism, wounds or predation. It may have been hit by a motor vehicle. The objective of this note is to report this observation due to its importance to the knowledge of the distribution and movement of …

Incidencia De Muertes Por Colisión En Algunas Especies De Rallidae En La Ciudad De Mérida, Estado Mérida, Venezuela / Death Incidence Due To Collisions In Some Species Of Rallidae In The City Of Mérida, Mérida State, Venezuela, Luis A. Saavedra, María Escalona-Cruz

Revista Venezolana de Ornitología

Collisions of birds against man-made structures generate high mortality in birds, especially if they are migratory species because they are attracted and disoriented by artificial illumination. Several species of Rallidae carry out nocturne migratory movements which make these birds prone to crash in the cities. Due to that, data of death Rallidae by collisions was collected in Mérida’s city, Venezuela. A total of 32 individuals were recorded, 19 of them were found by chance around man-made structures (buildings, billboards) between 2020–2021, and 13 specimens (collected between 1970–2012) were deposited in the Vertebrate’s Collection of Universidad de Los Andes (CVULA). Revista Venezolana de Ornitología

In order to contribute to the knowledge of the distribution of the Greater Ani Crotophaga major in Venezuela, we report the first records of the species within an altitudinal range of 1,540–2,680 m asl. Between December 2014 and May 2021, 11 individuals were sighted in seven different occasions through the main urban park of Mérida city and its surrounding areas, mainly associated to grasslands close to residential areas, and montane forest borders in the periphery. These observations represent the highest records for Venezuela and they could reflect an extension of distribution due to land transformation or migratory movements.
