Development Of Karst Landscape Unit Maps For Houston County Minnesota, U.S.A., Jeffrey A. Green, John D. Barry May 2020

Development Of Karst Landscape Unit Maps For Houston County Minnesota, U.S.A., Jeffrey A. Green, John D. Barry

Sinkhole Conference 2020

In karst areas, there is a close relationship between the landscape surface and the bedrock below. Classification of the karst landscape helps identify the groundwater characteristics beneath it. Common indicators of karst, such as springs, sinkholes, and sinking streams, are not always present, therefore karst landscapes were identi-fied through analysis of landscape position and geologic setting. A karst landscape unit describes a unique system that includes the surface and its connections to underlying aquifers. Identifying and mapping these units allows for better water and land resource management and planning. The process began with observations of patterns on the landscape through …

Resolution Of Lava Tubes With Ground Penetrating Radar: The Tubex Project, Sanaz Esmaeili, Sarah Kruse, Sajad Jazayeri, P. Whelley, E. Bell, J. Richardson, W. B. Garry, K. Young

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Remote sensing surveys of the Moon and Mars show evidence of lava tubes, which are potential safe havens for human crews and their equipment. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used to map tubes because the void/rock interface at tube ceilings and floors strongly reflects radar pulses. We have tested the capacity of GPR to sense lava tube geometry at Lava Beds National Monument in California, USA. GPR and detailed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data are presented for two tubes: Skull Cave, with a few meters of overburden, diameter ~10–20 m, and a rubbly floor; and Valentine Cave, with …

Surface Deformation And Induced Seismicity Due To Fluid Injection And Oil And Gas Extraction In Western Texas, Fanghui Deng, Timothy H. Dixon, Surui Xie

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Texas is experiencing increasing seismicity, likely related to the oil and gas production process. We used satellite InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) to monitor surface deformation at three study sites in western Texas with similar geologic characteristics. The deformation data were compared to earthquake distribution, groundwater changes, volumes of produced and injected fluid, and calculated pore pressure change and Coulomb failure stress change to assess causes of deformation and seismicity. Site 1 experienced surface uplift due to fluid injection but no increase in seismicity. The average media properties were estimated based on the deformation using a poroelastic model. Site 2 …

Cutting Edge Courtship In Eighteenth-Century London, Margaret E. France

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

In 1759, an anonymous twenty-two year-old woman placed an advertisement for a husband in the London Daily Advertiser that inspired an unusual sequel: a pamphlet purporting to collect her responses. Exploring the context of this woman's actions and the letters themselves reveals attitudes regarding matrimony and the dangers of virtual social networks that feel surprisingly contemporary.

Molecular And Cellular Differences In Cardiac Repair Of Male And Female Mice, Amanda B. Pullen, Vasundhara Kain, Charles N. Serhan, Ganesh V. Halade

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Background Leukocyte-directed biosynthesis of specialized proresolving mediators (SPMs) orchestrates physiological inflammation after myocardial infarction. Deficiency of SPMs drives pathological and nonresolving inflammation, leading to heart failure (HF). Differences in SPMs and inflammatory responses caused by sex-specific differences are of interest. We differentiated leukocyte-directed biosynthesis of lipid mediators in male and female mice, focusing on leukocyte populations, structural remodeling, functional recovery, and survival rates. Methods and Results Risk-free male and female C57BL/6 mice were selected as naïve controls or subjected to myocardial infarction surgery. Molecular and cellular mechanisms that differentiate survival, heart function, and structure and leukocyte-directed lipid mediators were quantified …

Sender Optimal, Breach-Resilient, And Post-Quantum Secure Cryptographic Methods And Systems For Digital Auditing, Attila Altay Yavuz Apr 2020

Sender Optimal, Breach-Resilient, And Post-Quantum Secure Cryptographic Methods And Systems For Digital Auditing, Attila Altay Yavuz

USF Patents

Cryptographic techniques referred to as Sender Optimal, Breach-resilient Auditing with Post-Quantum security (SOBAP) are described. Optimal efficiency and post-quantum security of symmetric key based techniques are achieved, while providing compromise-resiliency, conditional non-repudiation, and fault-tolerance verification in a distributed setting. SOBAP relies on any choice of a symmetric key based primitive with extended features (e.g., forward-security, append-only authentication), which can be optimally efficient. The verification is done via the execution of symmetric primitive F with a secure multi-party computation (SMPC) technique, wherein an honest majority guarantees a conditional non-repudiation and fault-tolerance. SOBAP offers an architecture that uses authenticated access control data …

How The Use Of Learner-Generated Images And Authentic Materials Affects The Comprehension And Production Of Vivid Phrasal Idioms In L2 English Learners, Melissa Larsen-Walker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Vivid Phrasal Idioms (VP Idioms) are non-compositional, figurative phrases that have limited flexibility, such as “once in a blue moon.” Research suggests that facility with idioms is an integral part of communicative competence in an L2 (Liontas, 2017; Sinclair, 1992). Despite the fact that they are ubiquitous throughout informal, spoken language (Karlsson, 2013; Liu, 2008), and occur less frequently in other registers of usage, newscasters and politicians employ VP Idioms for communication in what Myers (1996) has called the presentational mode. They also appeari in academic discourse (Liontas, 2008). Nevertheless, research suggests that the English language learners in formal educational …

Laser Micropatterning Effects On Corrosion Resistance Of Pure Magnesium Surfaces, Yahya Efe Yayoglu Apr 2020

Laser Micropatterning Effects On Corrosion Resistance Of Pure Magnesium Surfaces, Yahya Efe Yayoglu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Magnesium and its alloys are good candidates to manufacture medical implants. They have excellent biocompatibility and because they biodegrade secondary surgical operation to remove the implant could be eliminated. However, in aqueous environments, magnesium alloys rapidly corrode, resulting in premature degradation of the implant along with biologically intolerable hydrogen gas generation. In literature, there are multiple studies focused on creating water repelling hydrophobic magnesium surfaces in order to decrease corrosion rates. Hydrophobic properties can be achieved by creation of a roughness profile on an initially smooth surface combined with a treatment that reduces the free surface energy. In theory, hydrophobic …

Manipulation And Patterning Of Mammalian Cells Using Vibrations And Acoustic Forces, Joel Cooper Apr 2020

Manipulation And Patterning Of Mammalian Cells Using Vibrations And Acoustic Forces, Joel Cooper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recently, there has been a surge in researchers and scientists investigating different methods which move, manipulate, and pattern biological cells. Multiple different mechanisms can be used for cellular manipulation, microfluidics, biochemical queues, and even optics, just to name a few. However, all techniques have their downsides. A majority of these methods require expensive equipment or reagents and can only manipulate a small number of cells at a time.

Some of the most common cell manipulation devices utilize acoustic pressure waves to move the cells to desired locations. Currently, it is unknown what level of force from these types of devices …

Climate Change And Liberation In Latin America, Ernesto O. Hernández Apr 2020

Climate Change And Liberation In Latin America, Ernesto O. Hernández

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to propose the liberation movements in Latin America as alternative philosophical frameworks to the crisis of climate change. These movements have provided the grounds to identify inequities and injustices and have practiced ethical methodologies to overcome them. Additionally, the movements seek to represent and reflect the value of non-traditional philosophical agents in Latin America. The work focuses on four major Latin American ecological liberation movements; theology, philosophy, pedagogy, and feminism. Eco-Theology advances the role of Religion as the practice of Religação, reexamination, and resetting our relationship with nature by reconnecting with it. Eco-Philosophy of …

Lost Without A Connection: Analyzing Netflix's Maniac In The Digital Streaming Age, Eric Bruce

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the emergence and rise in popularity of streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu, the way in which audiences view and interact with media, as well as each other, has changed drastically. The move to digital streaming impacts how audiences everywhere experience and expect immediacy in media, connecting deeper with what they watch. Along with this transition in spectatorship comes a shift in visual aesthetics, a trend that can be seen across various digitally-streamed series. This thesis serves to address what this transition is and how it affects the cultural landscape of the digital age, continuing the conversation of …

Hiding Under The Sun: Health, Access, And Discourses Of Representation In Undocumented Communities, Jaime Shamado Robb

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project examines how undocumented immigrants in the United States communicate health and illness, specifically focusing on health narratives of undocumented immigrants in the South Florida region. In order to do this, I conducted 27 field interviews with undocumented immigrants living in South Florida to gain understanding of how this group meets health and wellness needs. Conversations revolved around prominent themes that highlighted the role of communication that produce stigma towards this group; the complexity of a costly bureaucratic health system, and the fears participants experience that stems from the possibility of deportation. Additionally, participants detailed the role of their …

School District Responses To Food Insecurity And Poor Nutrition In High Poverty Communities, Richard Grayes Apr 2020

School District Responses To Food Insecurity And Poor Nutrition In High Poverty Communities, Richard Grayes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Food insecure households are described as not having enough money or other resources to meet certain needs of all of their family members at some point during the year. Milam and Towns (2014) observed, “Child hunger exists in every county in every state” (p. 2). The hunger gap has been found to contribute to the lower academic achievement of students of color, particularly those from low-socioeconomic status (Jyoti, Frongillo, & Jones, 2005).

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of food insecurity and poor nutrition on student learning and to review district responses, particularly in elementary schools …

Keyless Anti-Jamming Communication Via Randomized Dsss, Ahmad Alagil Apr 2020

Keyless Anti-Jamming Communication Via Randomized Dsss, Ahmad Alagil

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nowadays, wireless networking is ubiquitous. In wireless communication systems, multiple nodes exchange data during the transmission time. Due to the natural use of the communication channel, it is crucial to protect the physical layer to make wireless channels between nodes more reliable. Jamming attacks consider one of the most significant threats on wireless communication. Spread spectrum techniques have been widely used to mitigate the effects of the jammer. Traditional anti-jamming approaches like Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) require a sender and a receiver to share a secret key prior to their communication. If this …
