Circrev1 Expression In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Meagan P. Horton
Circrev1 Expression In Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Meagan P. Horton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) comprises only 24% of breast cancer cases, yet is the second leading cause of cancer mortality in women due to its aggressive nature (1). This increase in mortality is due to the lack of receptors for three targetable growth factors (HER2, progesterone, and estrogen receptors). Our previous studies have indicated that these cancers are highly dysregulated in respect to alternative splicing. Hence, we undertook a study aimed at identifying circular RNAs (circRNAs) generated from back-splicing events which were dysregulated in TNBC. We have identified a novel circRNA transcript, circular REV1 (circREV1), which is upregulated in our …
Framing #Metoo Movement In China A Content Analysis Of China Women’S News Coverage, Wenminzi Wu
Framing #Metoo Movement In China A Content Analysis Of China Women’S News Coverage, Wenminzi Wu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Grounded in the framing theory, this article examined a differential study by content analysis. After the #MeToo movement rapidly trended in at least 85 countries including China, many people’s life and mind have been changed. The purpose of this study was to explore the frames used in the news coverage in China Women’s News referring to sexual harassment/assault and to examine how far the sense of gender equality has been changed in China especially after the #MeToo movement began. The sample came from the online database of a total of 546 relevant coverage from 2014 to 2020 in China Women’s …
An Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Disordered Eating Behaviors Within Alcohol Use Episodes: Determining Temporal Sequencing In Food And Alcohol Disturbance, Emily M. Choquette
An Ecological Momentary Assessment Of Disordered Eating Behaviors Within Alcohol Use Episodes: Determining Temporal Sequencing In Food And Alcohol Disturbance, Emily M. Choquette
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The co-occurrence of disordered eating and alcohol use has been well documented in the literature. Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD), previously referred to as “drunkorexia,” refers to the use of disordered eating behaviors within an alcohol use episode for the purpose of increasing alcohol effects and/or offsetting caloric intake from alcohol. There is a relatively limited literature base which examines FAD; however, there is evidence that FAD is associated with alcohol-related consequences and health risk behaviors. As such, further study into this phenomenon is necessary. The current study aimed to address significant limitations in the literature. While the aims of …
Enacting An Equity Framework With A Teacher And Students In An Urban Elementary Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Samantha J. Haraf
Enacting An Equity Framework With A Teacher And Students In An Urban Elementary Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Samantha J. Haraf
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This purpose of this study was to engage a fifth grade teacher and students in the exploration and application of the EFE (Education for Equity) conceptual framework, and to develop understandings of how EFE functioned in this context. This framework, developed around a decade of equity-focused research in elementary contexts, outlines research-based categories of practices for equity work in elementary schools, and it draws attention to areas lacking attention in the literature. Using and extending from case study methods and participatory methods, I worked with a teacher and her students in this urban classroom for approximately six months in both …

No Spanish In Cinderella’S Kingdom: A Situated Ethnography Of Disney World’S Engagement With Elena Of Avalor, Diana Leon-Boys
No Spanish In Cinderella’S Kingdom: A Situated Ethnography Of Disney World’S Engagement With Elena Of Avalor, Diana Leon-Boys
Communication Faculty Publications
Research indicates that Disney theme parks function as sites of ideological negotiation. This study builds on the research by examining Disney World’s incorporation of its first avowed Latina princess, Elena of Avalor. Bringing together discourses of Latinidad, theme parks, and media, this essay focuses on how the park incorporates Elena into its landscape at the level of production, representation, and audiences. I argue that Disney’s inclusion of Elena, and by extension Latinidad, is malleable, situated within the geographic setting, and dependent on various factors seldom disclosed by the conglomerate. Ultimately, Elena exists as an outsider within the Disney park …

Teaching In A Global Society: Considerations For University-Based Educational Leadership, Penny L. Tenuto
Journal of Global Education and Research
Those who work in university-based programs are in a unique position to positively influence teaching, leading, and learning in the 21st century—whether in traditional face-to-face classrooms or online. To ensure culturally responsive practices, postsecondary faculty and administrators must be proactive about critically reflecting on their own professional praxes related to adult learning. This paper offers a mini-review of concepts derived from the literature for promoting inclusive postsecondary learning communities in a diverse and global society. This conceptually based paper blends current practices with traditional adult learning theories and includes considerations for those who work in university-based programs that prepare educational …

This article addresses the way in which the teaching of Anne Finch and Katherine Philips can be enhanced with classroom discussion of a surprising modern parallel: the sometimes coercive artistic and personal constraints placed on contemporary female pop artists by male producers. Focusing on Kesha, my class compares her recent struggles for autonomy and justice to the peculiar creative conditions which Anne Finch and Katherine Philips had to endure, inviting students to use their popular culture knowledge to gain a more nuanced insight into the historical gendering of creative cultures.

Arts & Literature: Feeding Her Child A Green Slipper Instead Of A Cucumber, Kaziwa Salih
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
I first observed the confident, sad, yet hopeful face of Nabat Fayiaq Rahman through the black screen of the TV. She was wearing a traditional, completely black Kurdish outfit that matched the stage curtains designed for the anniversary of the Anfal genocide, marked on April 14th of each year. The Kurdish Anfal genocide in Iraq was perpetrated by Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1980s. Human Rights Watch (1994) estimates that as many as 182,000 Kurds were buried alive in mass graves; many of these mass graves were found after Hussein was overthrown. More than 2.5 million people were displaced, 4500 …

Dossier: Uyghur Women In China’S Genocide, Rukiye Turdush, Magnus Fiskesjö
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
In genocide, both women and men suffer. However, their suffering has always been different; with men mostly subjected to torture and killings, and women mostly subjected to torture and mutilation. These differences stem primarily from the perpetrators' ideology and intention to exterminate the targeted people. Many patriarchal societies link men with blood lineage and the group’s continuation, while women embody the group’s reproductivity and dignity. In the ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in East Turkistan, the ideology of Chinese colonialism is a root cause. It motivates the targeting of women as the means through which to …

Book Review: Remembrance And Forgiveness: Global And Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Genocide And Mass Violence, Amina Hadžiomerović
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The volume Remembrance and Forgiveness, edited by Ajlina Karamehić-Muratović and Laura Kromják, brings together a diversity of disciplines, authors, and cultural contexts to discuss the legacies of the post-Holocaust era genocides by focusing on the (de)mobilisation of memory in seeking truth, justice, and forgiveness. The book provides a compendious overview of the social, historical, and political contexts behind the insurgencies and gives a better sense of understanding of (the obstacles to) the healing process and reconciliation in the global frame.

Narrative Meaning Productions Of Compassionate Healthcare: An Examination Of Cultural Codes, Organizational Practices, And Everyday Realities, Carley Geiss
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the social complexities of emotion in healthcare; employing a multi-level narrative approach that explores the cultural, organizational, and interactional aspects of “compassionate care.” The central question I ask is: How do cultural beliefs and values surrounding compassionate healthcare inform organizational practices and the lived experiences of individuals providing such care? This project highlights the largely overlooked cultural, structural aspects of emotion, demonstrating how pervasive collective values and beliefs become institutionalized, and how such standards inform everyday experiences of healthcare providers.

Caves represent natural phenomena that have been used by man since ancient times, first as a refuge and dwelling, and later as objects of research and tourism. In the karst landscape of Slovak Republic in Central Europe, more than 7000 caves are registered in a relatively small area, of which 18 are open to the public. This paper deals with the analysis of the speleotourism potential of 12 of these caves, administered by the Slovak Caves Administration. Based on the obtained data, we first evaluate the number of visitors in 2010–2019. Using a public opinion survey among visitors, we then …
Explicating The Process Of Communicative Disenfranchisement For Women With Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions (Copcs), Elizabeth A. Hintz
Explicating The Process Of Communicative Disenfranchisement For Women With Chronic Overlapping Pain Conditions (Copcs), Elizabeth A. Hintz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation builds upon the extant literature in fields such as medicine, psychology, sociology, women and gender studies, and communication studies to theoretically explicate and develop a measure of the process of communicative disenfranchisement (CD). This dissertation refers to CD in two capacities: (a) as the phenomenon of CD (i.e., a communication construct and process unfolding over time), and (b) as a theoretical framework (i.e., that builds on CIFC tenets and elucidates the phenomenon of CD) which is abbreviated TCD (i.e., theory of communicative disenfranchisement). TCD enables scholars to assess how talk may disempower and empower again individuals and communities …

When I Rhyme It’S Sincerely Yours: Burkean Identification And Jay-Z’S Black Sincerity Rhetoric In The Post Soul Era, Antoine Francis Hardy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The slang, attitude, cultural memory, creativity and innovation of African diasporic youth created a global cultural movement-hip-hop--that informs all aspects of our society. In this dissertation; however, I examine how post-soul hip-hop featured black cultural conversations, specifically the ‘conversation’ between Jay-Z and his imagined black audience. Over the past 25 years Jay-Z has been known as one of the most acclaimed and successful recording artists of his time; however this study examines what I term his black sincerity rhetoric (BSR). At times Jay-Z is praised for his commitment to community in verse; …
Women Entrepreneurs In China: Dialectical Discourses, Situated Activities, And The (Re)Production Of Gender And Entrepreneurship, Zhenyu Tian
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the number of women entrepreneurs on the rise globally, the business world and the identity of the entrepreneur remain to be normed masculine and male gender stereotyped. This male gender stereotyping situates women who practice entrepreneurship in disadvantages, limiting their access to resources on which they depend to make meaning of their activities and identities. This imbalanced masculine gender order also manifests in China’s economy. Women entrepreneurs in China face complex contradictions and challenges when navigating an arena that privileges men and masculinity. However, not much is known about the micro-dynamics of Chinese women’s entrepreneurial experiences in light of …

Confidence Intervals Of Covid-19 Vaccine Efficacy Rates, Frank Wang
Confidence Intervals Of Covid-19 Vaccine Efficacy Rates, Frank Wang
Numeracy
This tutorial uses publicly available data from drug makers and the Food and Drug Administration to guide learners to estimate the confidence intervals of COVID-19 vaccine efficacy rates with a Bayesian framework. Under the classical approach, there is no probability associated with a parameter, and the meaning of confidence intervals can be misconstrued by inexperienced students. With Bayesian statistics, one can find the posterior probability distribution of an unknown parameter, and state the probability of vaccine efficacy rate, which makes the communication of uncertainty more flexible. We use a hypothetical example and a real baseball example to guide readers to …

Review Of Modeling Approaches To Groundwater Flow In Deformed Carbonate Aquifers, Giacomo Medici, Luca Smeraglia, Anita Torabi, Chartlotte Botter
Review Of Modeling Approaches To Groundwater Flow In Deformed Carbonate Aquifers, Giacomo Medici, Luca Smeraglia, Anita Torabi, Chartlotte Botter
KIP Articles
We discuss techniques to represent groundwater flow in carbonate aquifers using the three existing modeling approaches: equivalent porous medium, conduit network, and discrete fracture network. Fractures in faulted stratigraphic successions are characterized by dominant sets of sub‐vertical joints. Grid rotation is recommended using the equivalent porous medium to match higher hydraulic conductivity with the dominant orientation of the joints. Modeling carbonate faults with throws greater than approximately 100 m is more challenging. Such faults are characterized by combined conduit‐barrier behavior. The barrier behavior can be modeled using the Horizontal Flow Barrier Package with a low‐permeability vertical barrier inserted to represent …
