Brain Metastasis-Associated Fibroblasts Secrete Fucosylated Pvr/Cd155 That Induces Breast Cancer Invasion, Emma Adhikari
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer (BC) continues to be the most diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women worldwide. High mortality, in most cancers, is due to metastasis; BC is the most common source of one of the deadliest forms of metastasis–brain metastasis (BM) in female. Patients with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) exhibit the highest incidence of BM and poorest survival outcomes upon diagnosis with BM. The prognosis of breast cancer brain metastasis (BCBM) remains poor because the blood–brain barrier (BBB) prevents the uptake of drug substances, including chemotherapeutic agents, targeted agents, and toxins, from the brain. …

Israel-Hamas Conflict: Operational Considerations And Strategy, Arman Mahmoudian
Israel-Hamas Conflict: Operational Considerations And Strategy, Arman Mahmoudian
GNSI Publications
The recent attack by Hamas demonstrates an unprecedented level of capability and sophistication from the extremist militia, coupled with a significant intelligence failure on Israel’s part. The IDF’s vulnerability can be attributed to an expanding threat landscape and the evolving counter-intelligence tactics used by their adversaries. The rise of Iran-backed forces in the region, along with the increasingly covert operations by Hamas and similar groups, challenges Israel’s intelligence capabilities. However, the pressing question now is not about the occurrence of the attack but how Israel should respond. Potential strategies for Israel to reestablish deterrence include maintaining direct control, transferring authority …

Advancing Equity And Congestion Relief: An Investigation Of On-Demand Shared Rides For Underserved Populations, Ipek Nese Sener, Austin Sibu, Audrey Cabay
Research Reports
Transportation network companies (TNCs) and microtransit are changing the way people travel by providing dynamic, on-demand mobility that can supplement public transit and personal vehicle use. However, heavy use of such motorized vehicles among all sociodemographic populations could contribute to increased vehicle miles traveled, congestion, and/or greenhouse gas emissions. To balance the objectives of increasing mobility and access for underserved communities while simultaneously mitigating the potential adverse impacts of increased motor vehicle use, well-designed policy strategies, such as pooling and first-mile/last-mile linkages, are needed. In this study, we applied a mixed-method approach to examine on-demand transportation services for underserved populations …

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Stereology For High- And Low-Magnification Images, Hunter Morera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Quantification of the true number of stained cells in specific brain regions is an important metric in many fields of biomedical research involving cell degeneration, cytotoxicology, cellular inflammation, and drug development for a wide range of neurological disorders and mental illnesses. Unbiased stereology is the current state-of-the-art method for collecting the cell count data from tissue sections. These studies require trained experts to manually focus through a z-stack of microscopy images and count (click) on a hundred or more cells per case, making this approach time consuming (~1 hour per case) and prone to human error (i.e., inter-rater variability). Thus, …
