Uncommon Courtesy, Anita Rothwell Lindsay Jan 1996

Uncommon Courtesy, Anita Rothwell Lindsay

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In Chapter One, Edward I. Morse expresses his ideal of courtesy speaking at Vassar College in 1894. He said, "courtesy is not manners; for, manners are the garments of good behavior. It is not etiquette; for, etiquette is simply a technique of social proprieties. No, nor is it civility; for, civility may only be the chill of patronizing decency. Courtesy is an atmosphere of graciousness. It is the real ring of noble character. It is self-respect, refinement, good- heartedness, self-forgetfulness, and ideality." Chapter Two traces the tradition of courtesy to the beginnings of recorded history as an ideal preserved in …

Public Transit In The Social Marketing Framework, Devajyoti Deka Jan 1996

Public Transit In The Social Marketing Framework, Devajyoti Deka

Journal of Public Transportation

In view of the recent successes of social marketing in the various areas within the public, nonprofit sector, this study considers public transit as a socially marketable concept. The study contends that although service marketing is also important for the transit industry, there is a greater need for emphasizing the social marketing of transit. It is argued that social marketing of transit will have to deviate from the conventional service marketing approach in the key areas of market identification and segmentation, communication, distribution, and consideration of price.

A Taxonomy For Advanced Public Transportation Systems, Asad J. Khattak, Hisham Noeimi, Haitham M. Al-Deek

Journal of Public Transportation

This study explores the development and availability of APTS (Advanced Public Transportation Systems) technologies. APTS technologies can revitalize transit by directly improving service, increasing transit efficiency and reducing operating costs, as well as by producing direct benefits/or travelers such as reduced travel times, increased safety and security, and reduced stress in dealing with transit unreliability. To understand APTS impacts, this study develops a taxonomy of transit technologies and uses it to explore the availability of new technologies and their impacts. The taxonomy is based on defining the features, functions, and performance characteristics of transit technologies. Further, the implementation of new …

Hydrogeology Of, And Simulation Of Ground-Water Flow In, A Mantled Carbonate-Rock System, Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania U.S.Geological Survey Water Resources Investigations Report 94-4090, Douglas C. Chichester

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Abstract:The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a study in a highly productive and complex regolith-mantled carbonate valley in the northeastern part of the Cumberland Valley, Pa., as part of its Appalachian Valleys and Piedmont Regional Aquifer-system Analysis program. The study was designed to quantify the hydrogeologic characteristics and understand the ground-water flow system of a highly productive and complex thickly mantled carbonate valley. The Cumberland Valley is characterized by complexly folded and faulted carbonate bedrock in the valley bottom, by shale and graywacke to the north, and by red-sedimentary and diabase rocks in the east-southeast. Near the southern valley hillslope, the …
