The Effects Of Animated Textual Instruction On Learners' Written Production Of German Modal Verb Sentences, Elizabeth A. Caplan
The Effects Of Animated Textual Instruction On Learners' Written Production Of German Modal Verb Sentences, Elizabeth A. Caplan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effects of animation for a technology-assisted German grammar presentation on modal verbs. The premise was that many intangible concepts of dynamic grammar involve syntactic components that possess visuo–spatial characteristics. It was further speculated that these characteristics could be more effectively represented by animated versus static instructional presentations.
The supposition that animation would lend pedagogical advantage was supported by dual coding theory (Paivio, 1971, 1990), which posits two functionally separate representational systems, the verbal and the nonverbal, with dynamic mental imagery residing solely in the nonverbal system. The strength of dually coded information is that it is …

Global Collective Resources: A Study Of Monographic Bibliographic Records In Worldcat., Anna H. Perrault
School of Information Faculty Publications
In 2001, WorldCat, the primary international bibliographic utility, contained 45 million records with over 750 million library location listings. These records span over 4,000 years of recorded knowledge in 377 languages.1 Under the auspices of an OCLC/ALISE research grant, a bibliometric study was conducted of WorldCat. A 10% systematic random sample of the database was analyzed utilizing the OCLC iCAS product to profile the monographic bibliographic records in WorldCat by type of library, subject, language, and publication date parameters. The profile details the Ainformation commons@ of global publication made accessible through the OCLC international network. There were 3,378,272 usable records …

… This article reports on the new model of principals' training that has been used in York University's Principals' Qualification Program (PQP) from the late 1990s onward. One component of the program brings traditional case methodology into a computer-mediated/on-line environment. The on-line cases are narratives from the everyday lives of the Ontario school administrators who serve as mentors in the on-line environment. ...

Selection Of Clinical Trials: Knowledge Representation And Acquisition, Savvas Nikiforou
Selection Of Clinical Trials: Knowledge Representation And Acquisition, Savvas Nikiforou
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When medical researchers test a new treatment procedure, they recruit patients with appropriate health problems and medical histories. An experiment with a new procedure is called a clinical trial. The selection of patients for clinical trials has traditionally been a labor-intensive task, which involves matching of medical records with a list of eligibility criteria.
A recent project at the University of South Florida has been aimed at the automation of this task. The project has involved the development of an expert system that selects matching clinical trials for each patient. If a patient's data are not sufficient for choosing …

The Diffusion Of New Media Scholarship: Power, Innovation, And Resistance In Academe, Judith R. Edminster
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) are an evolving genre of graduate student research that is gaining widespread acceptance among universities in the international community. ETDs are also beginning to diffuse slowly among American universities; however, a number of issues continue to work against more rapid adoption among intitutions in the United States. This dissertation examines ETDs as an evolving electronic research genre by (1) historicizing the situated development of its predecessor, the traditional print dissertation, in nineteenth century German and American Universities; (2) reporting on the current state of the Networked Digital Library of Electronic Theses and Dissertations, an initiative …

The Possibility Of Reform: Micropolitics In Higher Education, Susan Haag, Mary Lee Smith
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
The purpose of this case study was to examine the restructuring of an institution of higher education's teacher preparation program and to assess the possibility for systemic reform. Although teacher education represents a vital link in not only the educational system but in curricular reform, the increased expectations for educational reform made this institution unavoidably more political. ...

… We first discuss the background, media coverage, and previous research associated with California's Proposition 227. We then present a series of validity concerns regarding use of Stanford-9 achievement data to address policy for educating LEP students; these concerns include the language of the test, alternative explanations, sample selection, and data analysis decisions. Finally, we present a comprehensive summary of scaled-score achievement means and trajectories for California's LEP and non-LEP students for 1998-2000. Our analyses indicate that although scores have risen overall, the achievement gap between LEP and EP students does not appear to be narrowing.

The Power-Discourse Relationship In A Croatian Higher Education Setting, Renata Fox, John Fox
The Power-Discourse Relationship In A Croatian Higher Education Setting, Renata Fox, John Fox
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Croatian higher education system's public space is researched through a critical analysis of a Croatian faculty's discourse. Representing a typical faculty social situation, two council meetings— recorded in minutes—are critiqued. Both meetings' minutes provide evidence of discourse strategies of deception used by faculty power holders to create an illusion of consent. We attribute the success of the deception to council members' ideas about the Faculty's groups/individuals, relations and issues related to the Faculty's hierarchy, their rank within that hierarchy, and their position within the Faculty's social network. To support our argument, we explore how the Faculty power holders' discourse is …

Electronic writing spaces are transforming graduate education-enhancing mentoring and the shape of dissertation content. In this article, we review international efforts to develop the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). We examine the need to amplify access to current scholarship, the need for training materials and centralized metadata, and the need to develop multi-language search interfaces. We explore ways traditional print dissertations are being remediated by electronic writing. We analyze challenges to implementing ETD initiatives, including concerns about preservation, attitudes toward intellectual property, and the training challenges involved in deploying technology to present new research using media and …
Armenians Of Tampa Bay : A Long Way Home, Anna Nefedova
Armenians Of Tampa Bay : A Long Way Home, Anna Nefedova
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Genocide would probably account for more than a half of all the historical research and literature endeavors that have something to do with the Armenian nation. The events of 1915, when the Turks attempted to eradicate the whole nation, and the preceding massacres of the late 19 century give food for reflection enough for many centuries to come. The accounts of the survivors are filled with terror and dismay; there have not been many events in the history of the past century as appalling or as huge in scale and consequences as the genocide of the Armenian nation.

School Choice Policies In The Political Spectacle, Linda Miller-Kahn, Mary Lee Smith
School Choice Policies In The Political Spectacle, Linda Miller-Kahn, Mary Lee Smith
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This article presents research on school choice. It takes the case of a school district in Boulder, Colorado, through the decade of the 1990s and shows how interest groups took advantage of federal, state, and district policies meant to promote school choice and molded them into a system of schools that met individualistic interests rather than the common good. Extensive interviewing and analysis of documents and media reports served as sources of evidence. The authors argue that district officials accommodated the demands of elite groups of parents to transform the district. ...
