Inquiry Into Equity Practice In A “White Space”: Student-Led Discussions And Academic Discourse, Caran Mullins Sep 2024

Inquiry Into Equity Practice In A “White Space”: Student-Led Discussions And Academic Discourse, Caran Mullins

Journal of Practitioner Research

In this study I used teacher inquiry to explore how to better engage my Black and Brown elementary students in student led discussions that could enhance academic discourse. The research questions driving my work emerged at the intersection of my beliefs and commitment to creating an equitable learning environment. Specifically, I wanted to know: (1) How do I scaffold my minority students to increased participation in academic discourse?, (2) How might these scaffolds support their development of metacognition, reading comprehension, and deeper critical thinking?, And (3) How do these scaffolds contribute to student feelings about their voice and place in …

Advancing Sustainable Investing: A Deep Learning Model For Multi-Source Stock Prediction, Hongxuan Yu, Tingting Zhang, Murat Kizildag

Journal of Global Business Insights

The burgeoning role of the stock market within the national economy elevates the importance of precise stock price analysis and prediction, a field that has garnered substantial interest in academic research. Stock price fluctuations, influenced by many factors, including company fundamentals, market sentiment, capital flows, industry news, and macroeconomic policies, present a highly dynamic and complex challenge for predictive modeling. Addressing this challenge, our study introduces an innovative method that capitalizes on the synthesis of news text and stock price data for forecasting market movements. We employ GloVe embeddings to capture semantic nuances from news text and integrate them with …

Teacher Candidates’ Engagement In Practitioner Inquiry Within An Equity-Centered Initial Teacher Preparation Program: Illuminating Equity’S Presence And Pitfalls, Lauren Weisberg, Blake Beckett, Nancy Fichtman Dana, Michelle Commeret, Rachel Silva Aug 2024

Teacher Candidates’ Engagement In Practitioner Inquiry Within An Equity-Centered Initial Teacher Preparation Program: Illuminating Equity’S Presence And Pitfalls, Lauren Weisberg, Blake Beckett, Nancy Fichtman Dana, Michelle Commeret, Rachel Silva

Journal of Practitioner Research

Growing numbers of initial teacher preparation programs are incorporating practitioner inquiry into clinical field experiences due to its proven capacity to empower educators and learners. To uphold practitioner inquiry’s tradition of interrogating the current culture of pedagogy, scholars advocate for an equity-centered approach to inquiry in these programs. We investigated the efficacy of such an approach by exploring how equity manifested, and was threatened, in teacher candidates' inquiries in an equity-centered program rooted in the cross-pollination of Universal Design for Learning and culturally sustaining pedagogy. Our findings indicate that while equity-centered teacher preparation programs have potential in nurturing teacher candidates’ …

Building Culturally Sustaining Learning Spaces With Immigrant Families And Young Bilingual Children During Pandemic Remote Learning, Alisha Nguyen Aug 2024

Building Culturally Sustaining Learning Spaces With Immigrant Families And Young Bilingual Children During Pandemic Remote Learning, Alisha Nguyen

Journal of Practitioner Research

This practitioner inquiry provides a critical reflection of my teaching practices as a multilingual immigrant early childhood educator who attempted to build partnerships with immigrant families during the COVID-19 pandemic. This partnership allowed me to collaborate with 39 caregivers and 42 emergent bilingual children from the Metro and Greater Boston Areas to design and implement a family engagement and remote learning program called Home Connection. Using culturally sustaining pedagogy to guide curriculum design, pedagogy, and family engagement, this paper presents what I have sought to sustain while teaching in the Home Connection program. The findings reveal that through the Home …

Roots Of Turmoil: Exploring The Causes Behind Fano Force's Struggle Against Abiy Ahmed's Administration, Agenagn Dagnew Mr

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

The struggle between Abiy's administration and the Fano had led to other-round chaos and violence in the Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia, after the conflict between the Tigray People Liberation Front’s (TPLF) and the federal government of Ethiopia took place from 2020 to 2022. In regard to this, the researcher explored the causes that resulted in Fano's struggle with Abiy Ahmed's administration. The research design was an exploratory case study. Document review, audio-visual sources, and a semi-structured interview were employed to look into the reasons for Fano Force's conflict with Abiy’s administration. The Oromo nationalist movement attacks on Amhara, the …

The Relationship Between Communication Styles And Nonverbal Communication Level: A Study On Tourist Guides, Melike Sak, Ali Turan Bayram, Gül Erkol Bayram, Anuj Kumar, Shakeel Basheer

Journal of Mediterranean Tourism Research

Communication, a fundamental tool in human interaction, encompasses a variety of methods and techniques. One such method, non-verbal communication, is a form of expression that transcends words or language. Instead, it relies on a spectrum of non-verbal cues, such as body language, eye contact, physical posture, gestures, and facial expressions, to convey meaning. In the context of tourist guiding, non-verbal communication is a key element. The non-verbal communication skills of tourist guides are pivotal in shaping the quality of the tour experience. By employing non-verbal communication techniques, guides can significantly enhance the quality of interaction with tourists, thereby optimizing communication …

Meta-Narrative Review Of Gender Portrayal In Disney Movies For Young Children And Its Pedagogical Implications, Xuan Jiang, Linlin Zhang, Diana Rivero, Brittany Torres Jul 2024

Meta-Narrative Review Of Gender Portrayal In Disney Movies For Young Children And Its Pedagogical Implications, Xuan Jiang, Linlin Zhang, Diana Rivero, Brittany Torres

Journal of Global Education and Research

Many of Disney movies have been criticized for perpetuating traditional gender stereotypes which constrain opportunities for children at large. Its recent characters have also incurred heated discussions on gender portrayal. Moreover, stereotypes of gender roles, developed early on, can exert an immediate impact on individuals’ behaviors and utterances and a long-term impact on individuals’ perceived options academically, professionally, personally, and socially. Recognizing the significance of this matter, this paper employed a meta-narrative review to collect and conceptually and empirically synthesize previous literature on the impact of Disney movies on young children’s gender awareness. Through an academic database search, 49 articles …

How Does This End?: The Ukraine War And The Future Of Russia, Jonathan M. Acuff, Hannah N. Clegg Jul 2024

How Does This End?: The Ukraine War And The Future Of Russia, Jonathan M. Acuff, Hannah N. Clegg

Journal of Strategic Security

We analyze a range of future scenarios for Russia related to the Ukraine War. Although regime change is a publicly-stated objective for several leaders of NATO countries, we find very little prospect for it. The Russian economy has largely evaded the effects of the sanctions. Despite enormous casualties and incompetence in the management of the war, both Putin and the war remain popular with the Russian public. Contrary to most analysis to date, the Wagner Group mutiny of June 2023 is not an indication of Putin’s weakness, but his strength. The coercive mechanisms of the Russian state remain intact. Indeed, …

Video Games And Radical Movements: "Ein Prozent" And "Heimat Defender", Göksel Türker, Ali Gök Jul 2024

Video Games And Radical Movements: "Ein Prozent" And "Heimat Defender", Göksel Türker, Ali Gök

Journal of Strategic Security

The far-right, which poses a threat of escalating into terrorism or inciting violence, employs a variety of tactics to spread its ideologies among the general public. In this context, "Heimat Defender: Rebellion," a two-dimensional video game supported by the far-right Ein Prozent operating in Germany, draws attention. In the study, the game in question was examined on the far-right and especially Ein Prozent ideology and subjected to discourse analysis. The analysis revealed that the game plot was shaped according to the friend-enemy perception of Ein Prozent and the far-right. Accordingly, in the game in question, opposition to multiculturalism, immigration, globalism, …

An Inference-Centric Approach To Natural Language Processing And Cognitive Modeling, Animesh Nighojkar Jun 2024

An Inference-Centric Approach To Natural Language Processing And Cognitive Modeling, Animesh Nighojkar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Reasoning over natural text is highly nuanced, and interpretations can vary widely depending on cultural background, financial status, age, gender, or even mood. This doctoral dissertation seeks to not only mimic human reasoning behaviors but also improve the task used in natural language processing (NLP) to capture naturalistic reasoning, known as the Natural Language Inference (NLI) task. NLI involves determining whether a hypothesis is true (entailment), false (contradiction), or indeterminate (neutral) based on a given premise. Initially, we will investigate the extent to which NLP systems designed to capture semantic equivalence actually measure meaning equivalence. After establishing that they do …

“Destiel Is Forever”: Negotiating Authenticity In The Cw’S Supernatural Family And Beyond, Hannah Lay Jun 2024

“Destiel Is Forever”: Negotiating Authenticity In The Cw’S Supernatural Family And Beyond, Hannah Lay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the communicative constitution of authenticity and queerness. Because queerness has been policed and censored, notions of authenticity, in particular authentic queer representations, are fraught and sustaining to many LGBTQ+ and allied media consumers. The project focuses on the television series Supernatural—specifically, the unfolding of interactions in fan conventions, Twitter/X, and Tumblr involving celebrities and viewers of the series following a social breach, or rupture in the narrative. The last three episodes of Supernatural brought issues of queerness and authenticity to the fore for many viewers, making discussions about these themes compelling sites for multimodal data in the …

Exploring Saudi Families’ Engagement In The Us Early Childhood Schools: Experiences Of Bearing The Burden, Sarah Alberaidi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A vast body of research in early childhood education has shown the positive effect of parents' engagement on children's emotional, cognitive, and social development. However, researchers identified limitations to parent involvement activities within the culturally diverse context. The purpose of this case study was to fill the literature gap in exploring how Saudi families engage in their children's early education in the United States. Within the context of sociocultural theory, Muscrit theory, family ethnothories, and mirror, window, sliding glass doors framework, this study aimed to understand the family engagement practices of three Saudi families whose children enrolled in early childhood …

A Robust Data-Driven Framework For Artificial Intelligent Systems, Quoc H. Nguyen Jun 2024

A Robust Data-Driven Framework For Artificial Intelligent Systems, Quoc H. Nguyen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems have demonstrated remarkable performance across various domains. However, their robustness remains a critical concern, particularly in terms of data and model reliability. This dissertation aims to address the challenges associated with building robust AI systems by focusing on two key aspects: data robustness and model robustness. Data robustness poses significant challenges, including data shift, concept shifting, limited and imbalanced datasets, and interoperability issues in IoT systems for data collection. Existing methods fall short in handling dynamic business objectives and evolving data landscapes effectively. To bridge these gaps, we propose an IoT framework that ensures interoperability, seamless …

The Power Of Class Consciousness: An Investigation Of Permeability Beliefs, Dehumanization, And Evaluations Of The Poor, Kirsten J. Lee Jun 2024

The Power Of Class Consciousness: An Investigation Of Permeability Beliefs, Dehumanization, And Evaluations Of The Poor, Kirsten J. Lee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Class consciousness, a theoretical construct from the Marxist tradition, promotes an understanding of class dynamics as a structural phenomenon. I hypothesized that class consciousness would moderate animalistic dehumanization of the poor. A total of 435 participants took an online survey containing self-report questionnaires. While a priori hypotheses related to animalistic dehumanization were not supported, exploratory analyses revealed that permeability beliefs—the degree to which an individual sees class boundaries as impermeable—moderate emotional tone when discussing the rich and the poor. Mirroring Marx’s theorizing, those with class consciousness spoke more positively of the poor and less favorably of the rich than their …

Music And Linguistic Semantic Anomalies: An Erp Study Of Integration And Expectancy On Predictive Processing Of Harmonic Music During A Self-Paced Reading Task, Jason Schmidt Avendaño Jun 2024

Music And Linguistic Semantic Anomalies: An Erp Study Of Integration And Expectancy On Predictive Processing Of Harmonic Music During A Self-Paced Reading Task, Jason Schmidt Avendaño

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Music, like language, is widely known to communicate emotional meaning. Yet, much debate is still on whether musical information uses shared neural resources similar to language. Past experiments using only Reaction Time (RT) measures have found that when syntactic complexities in language coincide with harmonic music violations, enhanced processing difficulties suggest shared neurocognitive resources. However, researchers failed to find similar interactions in semantic word conditions. This experiment examined event-related potentials (ERPs) to index word recognition processes related to semantic expectancy generation (N400) and integration (LPC & FP) in musicians and nonmusicians. Unlike RT measures, ERP components allow us to understand …
