Minimally Innate Ideas, Michele Merritt
Minimally Innate Ideas, Michele Merritt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This project provides a detailed examination and critique of current philosophical, linguistic, and cognitive accounts of first language acquisition. In particular, I focus on the concept of "innate" and how it is embraced, marginally utilized, or abandoned altogether in efforts to describe the way that a child comes to be a competent user of a language. A central question that naturally falls out of this general inquiry is therefore what exactly is supposed to be "innate," according to various theories? Philosophically, the theory of innate ideas put forth to explain human learning has existed for centuries and hence, this thesis …

High School Social Studies Teachers' Attitudes Towards The Inclusion Of Ell Students In Mainstream Classes, Jason L. O'Brien
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of high school social studies teachers who had English Language Learners (ELL) mainstreamed in their social studies classes. In the school district in which the study took place, approximately 70% (n=240) of the high school social studies teachers had ELL students in their classrooms. For the quantitative portion of the survey, 344 surveys were given to each social studies department chairperson in the county to be completed by all the teachers who currently had ELL students in their social studies classroom. For the qualitative portion of the study, eight high …
Documenting Dylan: How The Documentary Film Functions For Bob Dylan Fans, Theodore G. Petersen
Documenting Dylan: How The Documentary Film Functions For Bob Dylan Fans, Theodore G. Petersen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore the role of the documentary film in the relationship between the artist and the fan; specifically how Bob Dylan fans use the documentary films Dont Look Back, directed by D.A. Pennebaker, and No Direction Home, directed by Martin Scorsese. Dylan, Pennebaker, and Scorsese are three important figures in American popular culture, and these are the two most prominent films about Dylan. These films discuss relatively the same time period, yet delineate two different versions of Dylan's identity. Dont Look Back, released in 1967, documents Dylan's 1965 tour of England. Because of Pennebaker's …

Perception Of Educational Experiences By At-Risk African-American Students In An Undergraduate Teacher Education Program, Sharman Pride-Mcrae
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore individual perceptions of African-American at-risk students in an undergraduate teacher education program, specifically continuing students or community college transfer students in a four-year urban university College of Education (COE) program. Specific areas of interest included: (a) demographic characteristics profiling the study participants; (b) emotional and motivational factors as they affected the students; and (c) the personal thoughts and effect of institutional and environmental variables and administrative factors. Ten females volunteered to participate in a semi-structured interview. The 22 semi-structured interview questions were developed by the researcher. The questions captured the individual personal …
Reconstructing The Past: Heritage Research And Preservation Activities In Tampa Bay Communities, Courtney Ross Spillane
Reconstructing The Past: Heritage Research And Preservation Activities In Tampa Bay Communities, Courtney Ross Spillane
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There are numerous ways in which cultural heritage can be preserved, such as: physical museums, virtual museums, tours of historic homes, and community meetings. For this project, I participated in and observed heritage preservation activities in two very different communities--- Sulphur Springs and Seminole Heights in Tampa, Florida. My internship appointment was with OSHNA (Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association) under the direction of Dr. Steve Gluckman. My primary focus was assisting heritage preservation committee members in each of the two communities with heritage preservation projects specific to their community needs and interests. One project is the development of a heritage …
The Communicative Two-Way Pre-Writing Task Performed Via Asynchronous And Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication And Its Influence On The Writing Expertise Development Of Adult English Language Learners: A Mixed Design Study, Iona Sarieva
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study addresses a gap in the second language writing research through examining processes occurring during the pre-writing and drafting stages of adult second language learners' writing when computer-mediated communication (CMC) pre-writing activities are involved. The theoretical framework adopted in the study is Writing-as-process approach with a focus being the pre-writing and drafting stages of the writing process. The design of the study is a parallel component mixed method design with an ongoing dominant qualitative stage and a nested less-dominant quantitative stage. In the qualitative stage of the project, two case studies were conducted: a group case study of the …
"A Woman's Face, Or Worse": Otto Rank And The Modernist Identity, Michael L. Shuman
"A Woman's Face, Or Worse": Otto Rank And The Modernist Identity, Michael L. Shuman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Otto Rank is a significant but generally overlooked figure in the early history of psychoanalysis, and his work provides an illuminating context for the study of subjectivity and modernist culture. The "modernist identity" of my title is intended to represent, first, the concept of the individual self identified and expressed during this period and, secondly, the unique identity of modernist culture developed by artists through creative acts and emanating as the intellectual ambiance of the era. Through an examination of Rank's later theories and the work of prominent modernist artists, including Lawrence, Yeats, and Eliot, this dissertation will show that …

Labeling “Genocide” In Sudan: A Constructionist Analysis Of Darfur, William F.S. Miles
Labeling “Genocide” In Sudan: A Constructionist Analysis Of Darfur, William F.S. Miles
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Labeling is critical for the framing, perception, and political implications of social problems, genocide being a critical but overlooked example. For half a century social-science theory has developed increasingly sophisticated paradigms for understanding the process by which problems are recognized and addressed: social constructionism, labeling theory, politico-linguistics, problem definition, and tipping points. Yet rarely have these theoretical frameworks been applied to genocide studies. When reconsidered in light of Sudan, these general frameworks validate the constructionist argument that the recognized severity of political problems—including government-organized or -sanctioned mass killings—is a function of the socio-linguistic processing and naming of them. Anti-genocide advocates, …

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This is the third issue of Volume 1 of Genocide Studies and Prevention. It is the first non-topical or general issue and, therefore, contains articles covering a wide variety of topics. The lead article by Professor David Scheffer, formerly US ambassador at large for war crimes issues (1997–2001) and currently the Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw/Robert A. Helman Professor of Law and director of the Center for International Human Rights at Northwestern University, is an exciting and interesting call for a new genre of human-rights law. Arguing that the term ‘‘genocide’’ has imposed limitations on action to protect human rights, …

The case of the bachelor degrees for French teachers in Mexico is analyzed in order to show how the ways of looking at the other and be looked by the other can impact the mediation types and the treatment of the cultural distances, which in turn rebounds in the appropriation of the foreign language, the configuration of the professional ethos and the acquisition of competences for self-formation. Qualitative data were obtained by means of interviews, observations and collection of documents and the work was done by combining structural analysis, representation analysis, analysis of identity, genealogy and political discourse analysis.

This article is the result of reflection that emerged while conducting qualitative field research on nationalism and exclusion in Portugal. The problem I confronted was when to stop interviewing. Stated more precisely, I was seeking an answer to the question of when one has collected enough empirical data to support or reject one’s hypotheses. This initial problem led me to a rather old discussion on the difference between natural and human sciences that has characterized German academic life for many years–in fact, since the early 19th century–producing some more heated phases of academic dispute, known as the Positivismusstreit in the …
Taking Offense And Individual Differences: Who We Are Determines What Offends Us, Sarah J. Mcdougal
Taking Offense And Individual Differences: Who We Are Determines What Offends Us, Sarah J. Mcdougal
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Scarce literature regarding the mechanisms of offense-taking exists. However, a broad survey of literature in social psychology points to several possible mechanisms such as: breaking cultural norms, sensemaking and the correspondence bias (Gilbert, 2000), intent, and individual differences. In this paper two individual differences are examined: need for cognition and narcissism. A survey presenting four scenarios, two generally offensive situations and two personal affronts, showed that those high in need for cognition were less likely to make a negative character judgment about the "offender" in several scenarios, while there was no distinguishable difference between those high or low in narcissism.

A Dss Framework For Advanced Traffic Signal Control System Investment Planning, Houng Y. Soo, Dusan Teodorovic, John Collura
Journal of Public Transportation
This article presents ongoing research on the initial development of a decision support system (DSS) framework for integrated emergency vehicle preemption and transit priority system investment planning. A conceptual intelligent DSS framework provides a holistic framework to perform analytical assessments of integrated emergency vehicle preemption and transit priority systems. Three analytical tools are presented for incorporation into future DSS design: the first addresses the potential impact of transit travel time reduction on transit operating costs; the second addresses the potential impact of reduced emergency vehicle crashes at signalized intersections on fire and rescue operating costs; and the third integrates fuzzy …

The Agency Of “Triggering Mechanisms” As A Factor In The Organization Of The Genocide Against The Armenians Of Kayseri District, Vahakn N. Dadrian
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Using the notion of a ‘‘triggering mechanism’’ as a guidepost, this article details the sequence of events precipitated by the accidental explosion of a bomb a young Armenian was tinkering with in anticipation of a new round of massacres he hoped to obviate. The ensuing massive and indiscriminate arrests throughout the length and breadth of the district, the attendant use of a variety of methods of torture, and the eventual eradication of the bulk of the district’s Armenian population through courts-martial, followed by serial executions through hanging, deportation, and massacre, are depicted and analyzed to demonstrate the exterminatory thrust of …

“When The Cannons Talk, The Diplomats Must Be Silent”: A Danish Diplomat In Constantinople During The Armenian Genocide, Matthias Bjørnlund
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The envoy Carl Ellis Wandel was the sole Danish diplomatic representative in Constantinople before, during, and after World War I, and between 1914 and 1925 he wrote hundreds of detailed reports on the destruction of the Ottoman Armenians, as well as on related subjects. This article analyzes and contextualizes some of his most important reports, showing how these hitherto unknown sources contribute to the understanding of vital aspects of the Armenian Genocide, not least concerning the ongoing scholarly debate between ‘‘intentionalist’’ and ‘‘structuralist’’ interpretations of the event and concerning the destruction of the Ottoman Armenians as a particularly radical part …

The Us Investigation Into The Darfur Crisis And The Us Government's Determination Of Genocide, Samuel Totten
The Us Investigation Into The Darfur Crisis And The Us Government's Determination Of Genocide, Samuel Totten
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This article examines the genesis and implementation of the Atrocities Documentation Project initiated by the US State Department as well as the US government’s determination that genocide had been perpetrated in Darfur, Sudan, between late 2003 and August 2004. In doing so, the author considers and analyzes the rationale for the investigation and the reasoning for the genocide determination, as given by various US officials. He also delineates and discusses the perceptions of various scholars vis-a`-vis the same issues, noting that many of the latter suspect there were ulterior motives behind the genesis and implementation of the investigation as well …

Book Review: Gérard Prunier. Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide, Samuel Totten
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Written by a noted expert on East Africa, the Horn, Sudan, and the Great Lakes region of Africa, Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide is the first book to attempt to delineate and analyze the various historical antecedents, chronology of events, and ramifications of the current crisis in Darfur, Sudan. In doing do, Ge´rard Prunier, a research professor at the University of Paris, does a yeoman’s job of wrestling with the complexity of historical figures, events, and the Byzantine twists and turns that have taken place within Sudan and Darfur over the past two centuries.
Measuring Social Competence In Preschool-Aged Children Through The Examination Of Play Behaviors, Eun-Yeop Lee
Measuring Social Competence In Preschool-Aged Children Through The Examination Of Play Behaviors, Eun-Yeop Lee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For young children, a primary component of social competence is establishing effective interactions with peers during play. To inform the development of practices that promote this competency starting in early childhood, quality assessment measures are needed. These instruments must have the capacity to establish linkages between the home and school as well as utilizing multiple informants. A promising early childhood assessment measure is the Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale (PIPPS), which is a rating scale created with parent and teacher versions. Previous research has established its validity for preschoolers from among various populations.

The Impact Of Language And High-Stakes Testing Policies On Elementary School English Language Learners In Arizona, Wayne E. Wright, Daniel Choi
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This article reports the results of a survey of third-grade teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in Arizona regarding school language and accountability policies—Proposition 203, which restricts bilingual education and mandates sheltered English Immersion; the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB); and Arizona LEARNS, the state’s high-stakes testing and accountability program. The instrument, consisting of 126 survey questions plus open-ended interview question, was designed to obtain teacher’s views, to ascertain the impact of these polices, and to explore their effectiveness in improving the education of ELL students. The survey was administered via telephone to 40 teacher participants …
