Evaluation And Implementation Of A Molecular-Based Protocol For The Identification Of Enteroviruses At The Florida Department Of Health – Tampa Laboratory, Matthew Adams Smith
Evaluation And Implementation Of A Molecular-Based Protocol For The Identification Of Enteroviruses At The Florida Department Of Health – Tampa Laboratory, Matthew Adams Smith
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Enterovirus genus within the family Picornaviridae contains over 100 serotypes, of which sixty-four are known to be human pathogens. Infection with this group of RNA viruses produces a myriad of clinical conditions including poliomyelitis, meningitis, encephalitis, respiratory illnesses, and hand-foot-and-mouth disease. Outbreaks have been documented worldwide; significant morbidity and mortality exist to warrant laboratory surveillance.
Traditionally, enteroviruses have been identified to the level of serotype by the serum neutralization assay. However, numerous problems are associated with this assay. The serum neutralization assay is labor intensive, results are often ambiguous, and reagents are becoming difficult to obtain. Recently, molecular-based typing …

Occupational Health In The Productores De Monteverde Cheese Factory, August 4, 2002, María Teresa Fregoso, Idalia Aracely Rodríguez, Nancy Romano
Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health
An occupational risk assessment of the Monteverde Cheese Factory. Our group was asked to do a basic risk assessment of the Productores de Monteverde, S.A. (cheese factory) to identify occupational risks and make recommendations for a safer work environment. We did observations of five areas in the plant: milk receiving, main plant, warehouse, offices and maintenance areas from July 2 to July 28, 2002. We also asked workers to fill out a questionnaire asking about their perceptions of work training, risks and possible solutions to workplace hazards. Along with the questionnaires, we did sixteen informal interviews asking workers how they …

Cannabinoids And The Immune System, Thomas W. Klein, Catherine A. Newton, Herman Friedman
Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications
The effect of cannabimimetic agents on the function of immune cells such as T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells and macrophages has been extensively studied over the past several decades using human and animal paradigms involving whole animal models as well as tissue culture systems. From this work, it can be concluded that these drugs have subtle yet complex effects on immune cell function and that some of the drug activity is mediated by cannabinoid receptors expressed on the various immune cell subtypes. However, the overall role of the cannabinoid system of receptors and ligands in human health and …

Difference In Hearing Screening Failure Rates As A Function Of Ethnicity In Well Newborns Screened At Tampa General Hospital, Sybil N. Prewitt
Difference In Hearing Screening Failure Rates As A Function Of Ethnicity In Well Newborns Screened At Tampa General Hospital, Sybil N. Prewitt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The difference in otoacoustic emission (OAE) hearing screening failure rates as a function of ethnic category was investigated in a population of newborns at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, Florida. Clinical observation led to a concern that due to a higher incidence of outer and middle ear dysfunction in Hispanic newborns and children, screening could result in disparate failure rates, with a larger number of these infants requiring further testing. This result would warrant changes in current protocols, as well as screener training, and parent counseling practices.
Between January and July of 2000, 1407 newborns were tested utilizing distortion product otoacoustic emission …

Markets Versus Monopolies In Education: The Historical Evidence, Andrew Coulson
Markets Versus Monopolies In Education: The Historical Evidence, Andrew Coulson
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
A common point of contention among educators and economists is the likely effect a free market would have on modern education. Most supporters of public schooling maintain that the field would either be adversely affected by competition and choice, or that the effects would be insubstantial. Conversely, a significant number of critics argue that education, like all other human exchanges, would respond to market incentives with improved performance, increased attention to the needs of families, and greater innovation. ...
