Seascapes As A New Vernacular For Pelagic Ocean Monitoring, Management And Conservation, Maria T. Kavanaugh, Matthew J. Oliver, Francisco P. Chavez, Ricardo M. Letelier, Frank E. Muller-Karger, Scott C. Doney Jul 2016

Seascapes As A New Vernacular For Pelagic Ocean Monitoring, Management And Conservation, Maria T. Kavanaugh, Matthew J. Oliver, Francisco P. Chavez, Ricardo M. Letelier, Frank E. Muller-Karger, Scott C. Doney

Marine Science Faculty Publications

For terrestrial and marine benthic ecologists, landscape ecology provides a framework to address issues of complexity, patchiness, and scale—providing theory and context for ecosystem based management in a changing climate. Marine pelagic ecosystems are likewise changing in response to warming, changing chemistry, and resource exploitation. However, unlike spatial landscapes that migrate slowly with time, pelagic seascapes are embedded in a turbulent, advective ocean. Adaptations from landscape ecology to marine pelagic ecosystem management must consider the nature and scale of biophysical interactions associated with organisms ranging from microbes to whales, a hierarchical organization shaped by physical processes, and our limited capacity …

Pollutants And Foraminiferal Assemblages In Torrecillas Lagoon: An Environmental Micropaleontology Approach, Michael Martinez-Colon Jun 2016

Pollutants And Foraminiferal Assemblages In Torrecillas Lagoon: An Environmental Micropaleontology Approach, Michael Martinez-Colon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Torrecillas Lagoon in the North Coast of Puerto Rico has experienced extensive anthropogenic influence over the past 400 years. Elevated concentrations of Potential Toxic Elements (PTEs) have been reported in surficial sediments. The main goal of this dissertation was to implement in Puerto Rico the use of benthic foraminifers as a bioindicators of PTEs and to compare the impact of Cu(II) on field samples with results of experimental work using cultures.

Analyses included geochemical assessment for bulk and carbonate- soluble bioavailable concentrations of PTEs in surface, core and pore-water samples, as well as analyses of grain-size, Percent Total Organic Carbon …

Divine Temporality: Bonhoeffer's Theological Appropriation Of Heidegger's Existential Analytic Of Dasein, Nicholas Byle Apr 2016

Divine Temporality: Bonhoeffer's Theological Appropriation Of Heidegger's Existential Analytic Of Dasein, Nicholas Byle

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation’s guiding question is: What was the impact of Martin Heidegger’s early philosophy on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theology? I argue that Heidegger’s analysis of Dasein, his technical term for human existence, provides Bonhoeffer with important conceptual tools for developing his Christology, from which the rest of his theology follows.

Part of recognizing Heidegger’s importance to Bonhoeffer involves understanding the latter’s critiques of previous notable philosophers such as Kant, Hegel, Husserl, and Scheler. As Bonhoeffer evaluates these philosophers, they lead to theologically unacceptable positions. Heidegger, in contrast, has come to a theologically profitable understanding of human existence and epistemology. Though there …

The Impossibility To Protect? Media Narratives And The Responsibility To Protect, Kjell Føllingstad Anderson, Ingjerd Veiden Brakstad Feb 2016

The Impossibility To Protect? Media Narratives And The Responsibility To Protect, Kjell Føllingstad Anderson, Ingjerd Veiden Brakstad

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The media plays an important role in communicating mass atrocities to audiences across the globe. This article critically examines how journalists’ framing of mass atrocities may contribute to public discourse on the responsibility to protect principle, in particular the perceived obligation to intervene in cases of mass atrocities. It will draw from a broader conceptual framework on bystander responses to mass atrocities and utilise evidence from the analysis of newspaper accounts of the Rwandan and Bosnian genocides. It will argue that, in some cases, media narratives may actually erode political will and encourage passivity in response to mass atrocities.

Eliminating Rivals, Managing Rivalries: A Comparison Of Robert Mugabe And Kenneth Kaunda, Stephen Mcloughlin, Maartje Weerdesteijn Feb 2016

Eliminating Rivals, Managing Rivalries: A Comparison Of Robert Mugabe And Kenneth Kaunda, Stephen Mcloughlin, Maartje Weerdesteijn

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article seeks to explore the role that leadership plays in both the perpetration and avoidance of mass atrocities. Many scholars have argued that leadership is pivotal to the outbreak of such violence but there is almost no scholarship which explores the role that political leaders play in mitigating or aggravating the risk of atrocities over time. Why is it that mass atrocities occur in some places but not in others, despite the existence of similar risk factors? By conducting a comparative analysis of Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, this paper investigates the impact that the …

Funeral Service Employers' Perceptions Of Body Art And Hireability, Tanya E. Scotece Nov 2015

Funeral Service Employers' Perceptions Of Body Art And Hireability, Tanya E. Scotece

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine whether there were biases among funeral home and cemetery professionals with regards to hiring mortuary science graduates with tattoos.

An anonymous survey including a photograph of either a male or female with various degrees of visible body art, ranging from none to extreme, was sent to 1484 members of the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association. The primary methodology used to determine whether biases existed regarding visible body art were a semantic differential and a hireability scale. The survey was designed to gather information related to the following three research questions:

1. …

Characterization Of Noise Exposure For High-Volume Restaurant Workers, Desiree Gladieux Nov 2015

Characterization Of Noise Exposure For High-Volume Restaurant Workers, Desiree Gladieux

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Occupational hearing loss resulting from noise exposures encountered in the workplace affects millions of workers and costs hundreds of millions of dollars annually in Workers’ Compensation costs in the United States alone. Some industries have been well studied, and the presence of hazardous noise in the work environment established and documented. The restaurant industry is one in which little current data exists, but in which there may be cause for concern.

This work sought to quantify noise exposures for cooks, servers, and dishwashers and to determine whether or not any of these workers are at risk for Noise Induced Hearing …

Book Review: Ethnic Cleansing And The Indian: The Crime That Should Haunt America, Mark Meuwese Oct 2015

Book Review: Ethnic Cleansing And The Indian: The Crime That Should Haunt America, Mark Meuwese

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This critical review examines the recent monograph by Gary C. Anderson, Ethnic Cleansing and the Indian. Although Anderson's work gives a comprehensive overview of how Native Americans were forced from their homelands by European and American settler-expansion, the author's analysis is weakened by his refusal to consider that many of the Indigenous groups may have experienced this process as genocide.

Professionalizing Intelligence Analysis, James B. Bruce, Roger George Sep 2015

Professionalizing Intelligence Analysis, James B. Bruce, Roger George

Journal of Strategic Security

This article examines the current state of professionalism in national security intelligence analysis in the U.S. Government. Since the introduction of major intelligence reforms directed by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act (IRTPA) in December, 2004, we have seen notable strides in many aspects of intelligence professionalization, including in analysis. But progress is halting, uneven, and by no means permanent. To consolidate its gains, and if it is to continue improving, the U.S. intelligence community (IC) should commit itself to accomplishing a new program of further professionalization of analysis to ensure that it will develop an analytic cadre that …

Terra Incognita: Mapping American Intelligence Education Curriculum, Stephen Coulthart, Matthew Crosston Sep 2015

Terra Incognita: Mapping American Intelligence Education Curriculum, Stephen Coulthart, Matthew Crosston

Journal of Strategic Security

For more than two decades, degree-granting intelligence programs have popped up around the U.S., representing the largest and perhaps most enduring investment in American intelligence education. Scholars have addressed issues in American intelligence education, but to date, there has been no focused study that has mapped and analyzed these programs. This article addresses this gap by answering the questions: What are the American intelligence programs and what content is being taught? We answered this question by systematically identifying all 17 American intelligence education programs (1992-2012). The picture that emerges is one of delayed, but rapid growth: most programs were founded …

Pahn-Ti-Pan: The Rise And Fall Of Complex Socio-Political And Economic Systems As Attested In Subterranean Site Contexts Of Central Belize, C.A.

KIP Theses and Dissertations

The question that drives this dissertation is "As integrated and varied ritual contexts, how do changing patterns of pre-Columbian cave use inform on the complex of historical, social, political, economic and related ideological processes in action during the inception, florescence, and collapse of Tipan Chen Uitz and other nucleated centres in the region [Central Belize]?"

Origins Of Music Programs In Liberal Arts Institutions: The Story Of Three Florida Catholic Universities, Cynthia S. Selph Mar 2015

Origins Of Music Programs In Liberal Arts Institutions: The Story Of Three Florida Catholic Universities, Cynthia S. Selph

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the music programs in liberal arts colleges through the historical lens of three Catholic Universities in the state of Florida. Although there are numerous historical dissertations and theses written about individual music schools and departments, and a few that compare music programs in similar types of institutions, none have compared music programs in Catholic universities within the same state. After teaching at Saint Leo University and experiencing the process of rebuilding a music program after it was almost completely lost in the mid-1990s, I wanted to study the histories of Saint Leo and other Florida Catholic institutions …

Valuing Illusion: A Comparative Analysis Of Jean Baudrillard And Eihei Dogen, Nicholas Boynton Jan 2015

Valuing Illusion: A Comparative Analysis Of Jean Baudrillard And Eihei Dogen, Nicholas Boynton

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the overlapping themes, ideas, and strategies of Jean Baudrillard and Eihei Dogen. The rationale for such an endeavor lies in the absence of any comparison of Baudrillard and Dogen, when there is a plethora of scholarship that places their respective philosophies into conversation with post-structuralism and Zen Buddhism. I approached this project from the perspective of examining how Dogen’s enigmatic ideas helped in understanding Baudrillard’s complex theory, and vice-versa. By looking more closely at each philosopher’s writing, themes, and concerns, I highlight ideas from separate and distinct socio-historical situations and find ways …

Jimbo's Handy Handbook Of Historiography : The Historiography Of The United States, James Anthony Schnur Jan 2015

Jimbo's Handy Handbook Of Historiography : The Historiography Of The United States, James Anthony Schnur

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Schnur, a graduate student in history at USF at the time, created this booklet as a study guide to assist in preparations for his comprehensive examinations in the USF History M.A. program. Although most of the focus is on historians prior to the 1970s, this booklet does provide biographical vignettes that may assist those interested in learning about various schools of thought in the American historical profession. Most of the information in this handbook came from Schnur's notes in various classes, as well as other helpful sources, such as the Dictionary of Literary Biography.

Managing Regional Water Resources Amidst Rapid Urbanization In Southwest Florida: A Case Study, Nicole Owusua Caesar Jul 2014

Managing Regional Water Resources Amidst Rapid Urbanization In Southwest Florida: A Case Study, Nicole Owusua Caesar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Experts and organizations involved in freshwater resources management have emphasized the importance of long-term urban resource planning and management that considers the tight coupling which exists between human - nature - technology systems. The resistance of contemporary urban growth efforts to consider resource carrying capacities and ecosystem requirements has led to costly unintended consequences including the deterioration of natural capital and their associated ecosystem services, and the degradation of water resource flows. As these problems continue to worsen, resource experts have called for the development of a new water resource management paradigm inclusive of various sustainability criteria.

Historically water-rich Florida …

In Our Image: The Attempted Reshaping Of The Cuban Education System By The United States Government, 1898-1912, Mario John Minichino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

During the fourteen years between 1898 and 1912, the influences imparted upon the School System of Cuba were substantial. In the period immediately following the conflict with Spain, known in the U.S. as the Spanish American War, a concerted effort was underway to annex the island of Cuba. This study was undertaken to discover what courses were introduced into the K-12 curricula following the U.S. intervention, who introduced those changes, and what, if any influence those changes brought to the culture of the island. This investigation and analysis was necessary to reinvigorate the discussion regarding the history of the …

Diversionary Foreign Policy In Authoritarian States: The Use Of Multiple Diversionary Strategies By Saddam Hussein During The Gulf War, Kilic B. Kanat Apr 2014

Diversionary Foreign Policy In Authoritarian States: The Use Of Multiple Diversionary Strategies By Saddam Hussein During The Gulf War, Kilic B. Kanat

Journal of Strategic Security

The diversionary theory of war has been considered one of the most contested theories that link domestic and external conflicts. Thus far scholarship in this field has focused on one-time single diversionary attacks, which led to the temporary deflection of attention from domestic problems to external ones. This study intends to bring revisions to the assumptions in the center of diversionary theory and demonstrate these through a well-known but underutilized case. This article intends to show that leaders have not one single option but rather a repertoire of different foreign policy actions in their possession to divert the attention of …

The Nps Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol, Rodney Horrocks Nov 2013

The Nps Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol, Rodney Horrocks

National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013

The national Cave Visitor Impact Vital Signs Monitoring Protocol is an attempt to standardize visitor impact monitoring in all National Park Service managed caves. With standardized monitoring in place, it will be feasible for the first time to compare monitoring data from caves across the country. This cave monitoring protocol was initiated at the NPS Cave Vital Signs Workshop held in Lakewood, Colorado in 2008. That workshop identified the vital signs that were common to all caves, including cave visitor impact. A committee convened at that workshop decided that the cave visitor impact monitoring protocol would address four parameters of …

Interactive Aphra: Skyping Behn Into Your Classroom, Cheryl Wanko

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Beginning by asking how teachers manage the presence of the author in their literature classrooms, this article describes the classroom experiment of interviewing Karen Eterovich, an actor who portrays Aphra Behn, using Skype. It describes the planning and scripting processes, explains the particular interests of this group of students, and assesses the final activity. Questions arose about topics for the interview, appropriate ways for Behn to respond, and the need for a script. The pedagogical opportunities for preparing students as interviewers and of expanding their understanding of performance, historical reenactment, and the construct of the author are discussed. Possible extensions …

The Complex Origin Of Astyanax Cavefish, Joshua B. Gross Jun 2012

The Complex Origin Of Astyanax Cavefish, Joshua B. Gross

KIP Articles

Background The loss of phenotypic characters is a common feature of evolution. Cave organisms provide excellent models for investigating the underlying patterns and processes governing the evolutionary loss of phenotypic traits. The blind Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus, represents a particularly strong model for both developmental and genetic analyses as these fish can be raised in the laboratory and hybridized with conspecific surface form counterparts to produce large F2 pedigrees. As studies have begun to illuminate the genetic bases for trait evolution in these cavefish, it has become increasingly important to understand these phenotypic changes within the context of cavefish origins. …

Critical Genocide Studies, Alexander Laban Hinton Apr 2012

Critical Genocide Studies, Alexander Laban Hinton

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Over the last two decades, the interdisciplinary field of genocide studies has dramatically expanded and matured. No longer in the shadow of Holocaust studies, it is now the primary subject of journals, textbooks, encyclopedias, readers, handbooks, special journal issues, bibliographies, workshops, semi- nars, conference, Web sites, research centers, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and a unit at the United Nations. If not yet fully theorized, the discipline is characterized by a number of debates and approaches. As the outlines of the field emerge more clearly, the time is right to engage in critical reflections about the state of the …
