Buying Peace Or Building Peace: Rethinking Non-Coercive Approach To The Management Of Non-State Armed Groups Involved In Mass Atrocity, Owonikoko B. Saheed, Nathaniel D. Danjibo
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Non-state armed groups (NSAGs) are increasingly responsible for mas atrocities in contemporary armed conflicts. As agents with a monopoly on the legitimate use of force, the state has the responsibility to engage NSAGs for peace and security. How to sustainably engage them remains the subject of intense debate among policymakers and academics. While some advocate for the use of a coercive approach, others favor a non-coercive approach or a combination of both. Contemporary reality has shown states often opt for the adoption of a non-coercive approach to end mass atrocities and extreme violence because a coercive approach has proven to …
Framework For Collaborative Teaching: Strengths And Challenges For A Different Service Paradigm In Haiti, Patricia Mason, Judith C. James-Burga
Framework For Collaborative Teaching: Strengths And Challenges For A Different Service Paradigm In Haiti, Patricia Mason, Judith C. James-Burga
Journal of Global Education and Research
Nursing education in Haiti is in transition. This article describes the teaching/learning experiences of participants in a nursing educational project in Haiti. The project was guided by an integrative framework of the educational collaborative model, constructivism and situated learning theory. Reflections on the experiences lead to the realization of these four lessons: (a) the service provided must supplement, not negate the values and strengths of the host community; (b) it is important to provide sustainable service; (c) methods used by international educators must be respectful and relevant; and (d) international educators must be willing to engage in the identification and …

The landscape grain effect reflects the spatial heterogeneity of a landscape and it is used as a research core of landscape ecology. The landscape grain effect can be used to not only explore spatiotemporal variation characteristics of a landscape pattern, but also to disclose variation laws of ecological structures and functions of landscapes. In this study, the sensitivity of landscape pattern indexes to grain sizes 50–1000 m was studied based on landscape data in Yancheng Coastal Wetland acquired in 1991, 2000, 2008, and 2017. Response of the grain effect to landscape changes was analyzed and an optimal grain size for …

Functional Porous Materials: Applications For Environmental Sustainability, Briana Amaris Aguila
Functional Porous Materials: Applications For Environmental Sustainability, Briana Amaris Aguila
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Resource depletion, clean water shortages, and global climate change have led to environmental sustainability being of primary concern for both governmental and industrial practices. Current methods to address these challenges typically come as a double-edged sword, fixing one problem while contributing to another. As introduced in chapter one of this dissertation, adsorbent materials are seen as a promising alternative remediation system due to their low energy consumption and minimal chemical waste production. However, many traditional adsorbents, such as activated carbon, metal oxides, and resins, are hindered in practice. This is because they lack the structural tunability to have long-term effectiveness …

Probabilistic And Statistical Prediction Models For Alzheimer’S Disease And Statistical Analysis Of Global Warming, Maryam Ibrahim Habadi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The importance and applicability of data-driven statistical models have increased significantly. This current study, we have utilized statistical techniques in interdisciplinary research, including environmental and health.
Environmentally, global warming is considered one of the critical issues facing our planet. It is the increase in average global temperatures caused mostly by increases in Carbon Dioxide CO2. The excessive rise of carbon dioxide from the average level as the side effect of the industrial revolution has a significant impact on blocking the heat and increase the temperature within the Earth’s atmosphere. Based on the record of total CO2 emissions …

Using A Stress Process Model To Examine Longitudinal Racial Differences In Well-Being And Health: Results From A Population-Based Study Of Caregiving, Adrian N. S. Badana
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the older adult population of the United States increases over the next decade, many family caregivers will be needed to provide care for aging loved ones. The growing diversity of the population may also mean that more racial/ethnic minority caregivers will be providing care to older family members. Most of the studies examining race and caregiving have focused on racial differences in stress, coping, well-being and health among White and Black family caregivers. However, previous research examining racial differences in caregiving has often been limited to smaller convenience samples of caregivers, which limit generalizability of study findings. In this …

Understanding The Experiences Of Multiracial Faculty Members: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Gianna E. Nicholas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to understand the experiences of multiracial faculty at a public, four-year university in the United States, including the challenges and supports that may affect their role and responsibilities within academia. Another objective of this research study was to center the voices of multiracial faculty. While there is much research on faculty of color, research specifically on multiracial faculty is limited, indicating an even greater need to explore the experiences of this population. This qualitative, phenomenological study utilized semi-structured interviews with six, multiracial faculty members. This study’s findings have implications for institutional policies and practices regarding faculty …

Factors Associated With Trust In Primary Care Physicians, Emily Lind, Noel Takeuchi, Thomas Smith
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Trust in physician should help reinforce the idea of the physician-patient relationship as a partnership. Since trust is the universally accepted basis for any human interaction (Gundlach & Murphy, 1993), a patient’s trust in a physician is a precondition for successful medical care (Leisen & Hyman, 2004). Trust is also important because the relationships between patients and medical professionals concern life or death and physical wellbeing directly. In addition, the traits of the medical practice often involve uncertainty and irreversibility (Kim et al., 2018). Research shows a trusting physician-patient relationship leads to an increase in patient satisfaction, increase in the …

Mind Over Matter? Mindfulness Matters In Big Five Traits Predicting Resilience, Dimitra Dimopoulos, Jamie Onufrak, Marcia Gralha, Michael Avery, Samantha Booth, Lindsey M. Rodriguez
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment on purpose and without judgment (Kabat-Zinn, 1994).
Conscientiousness displays a strong, positive relationship with mindfulness. Of the Big Five personality traits, conscientiousness is the least likely to be investigated with respect to mindfulness (Gulik, 2009).
Mindfulness is expected to be positively related to agreeableness with both constructs holding similar tendencies such as care, empathy, and understanding towards others.
Resilience has been found to be negatively correlated to neuroticism and positively correlated to the rest of the Big Five traits (openness to experience, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and extraversion) (Oshio, Taku, Hirano, & Saeed, 2018). …

Localization Of Five Target Proteins In Tachyzoites Of Toxoplasma Gondii, Abigail M. Kaiser
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Five target genes were selected in Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites for localization studies. These five genes, detected through proteomics studies, included TgME49_227450, TgME49_223080, TgME49_262390, TgME49_230940, and TgME49_269620. Localization of these five target proteins is a first step to confirm their interaction with TgCrk2 and understand their function and role in TgCrk2 regulation of the tachyzoite cell cycle. Gene models for the targets were analyzed using ToxoDB and ApE analysis tools. Endogenous tagging constructs were created for each target. Transgenic parasites were created. Finally, localization analysis of the target proteins in tachyzoites was completed using immunofluorescent microscopy following. One protein was found …

Comparison Of Some Epigean And Troglobiotic Animals Regarding Their Metabolism Intensity. Examination Of A Classical Assertion, Tatjana Simčič, Boris Sket
International Journal of Speleology
This study determines oxygen consumption (R), electron transport system (ETS) activity and R/ETS ratio in two pairs of epigean and hypogean crustacean species or subspecies. To date, metabolic characteristics among the phylogenetic distant epigean and hypogean species (i.e., species of different genera) or the epigean and hypogean populations of the same species have been studied due to little opportunity to compare closely related epigean and hypogean species. To fill this gap, we studied the epigean Niphargus zagrebensis and its troglobiotic relative Niphargus stygius, and the epigean subspecies Asellus aquaticus carniolicus in comparison to the troglobiotic subspecies Asellus aquaticus cavernicolus …

Vision-Based Guidance And Navigation For Swarm Of Small Satellites In A Formation Flying Mission, Hadi Fekrmandi, Skye Rutan-Bedard, Alexander Frye, Michael Yoon, Randy Hoover
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
Small satellites, including the nanosatellite platforms called CubeSats, are suitable for formation flying missions because of their modular nature and low cost. A formation flying mission involves a set of spatially-distributed satellites capable of autonomous interaction and cooperation with one another in order to maintain the desired formation. One of the fundamental drawbacks of current guidance, navigation, and control techniques is that they rely on a centralized process, primarily using a global positioning system (GPS). While real-time positioning computed by standard GPS service is adequate for some disperse applications (i.e., constellation missions), inherent position discontinuities are not acceptable for proximate …

This paper proposes an exoskeleton glove meant to reduce fatigue in the human hand when it grips an object. The mechanism senses when the user’s hand is grasping an object, then locks the positioning of the hand to hold the grip for the user. The hand then waits for the user to release their grip, then allows the hand to move freely.

Autonomous Inspection And Maintenance (Aim) Crawler For Nondestructive Testing And Evaluation Of Cu-Ni Piping System In Highly Corrosive Environments, Hadi Fekrmandi
Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics
In this paper, we describe the design, control and experimental validation of a new robotic pipe crawler for autonomous inspection of remote-to-access piping. The majority of current in-pipe inspection robots are primarily designed and suitable for large diameter pipes and unreliable for pipes less than 5 inches (12.70 cm) in diameter. The small size of the robot gives rise to problems with insufficient power, propulsion, structural integrity and difficulty of control, guidance and navigation. To address these challenges, a modular design of the crawler with a hybrid, legged- peristaltic movement has been designed and developed with the capability of navigating, …

Neoclassicism And Camp In Sir William Hamilton’S Naples, Ersy Contogouris
Neoclassicism And Camp In Sir William Hamilton’S Naples, Ersy Contogouris
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Susan Sontag, in her now-classic “Notes on Camp” (1964), traces the origins of camp to the eighteenth century (13, 14, 33). And although it is precisely the baroque and rococo art movements against which Winckelmann rebelled that Sontag identifies as camp, it is worth reflecting on whether the notion of imitation that is central to both movements – imitation of ancient works in the case of neoclassicism, and imitation as parody in the case of camp (Meyer 7) – might not bring the two closer. Once the conceptual chasm separating neoclassicism and camp has begun to be bridged, we can …
Sterne’S Sentimental Temptations: Sex, Sensibility, And The Uses Of Camp, Julie Beaulieu
Sterne’S Sentimental Temptations: Sex, Sensibility, And The Uses Of Camp, Julie Beaulieu
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Laurence Sterne’s lack of commitment to the tenets of sentimentality in A Sentimental Journey—present in his ability to mock and praise the individual capacity to feel, and more precisely, in his satirical reading of the “cult of sensibility,” the new ideological imperative to have and to showcase deep, sentimental feelings—remains as one of the central challenges for readings of the novel. To explore Sterne’s portrayal of sensibility in A Sentimental Journey, I turn to camp sensibility, and the discussions that followed Susan Sontag’s “Notes on Camp.” Sterne’s novel could be read as camp, perhaps most notably in his …
