Breaking Binaries: Gender Non-Conforming Lesbians And The Undercurrent Of Biopower On Dating Apps, Lily M. Connolly
Breaking Binaries: Gender Non-Conforming Lesbians And The Undercurrent Of Biopower On Dating Apps, Lily M. Connolly
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how gender nonconforming lesbians experience and navigate algorithmic constraints, commodification, and self-expression on dating apps. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s concept of biopower, this study analyzes focus group discussions to argue that dating apps encode and enforce traditional gender norms. However, rather than acting solely as sites of constraint, dating apps also provide spaces where gender nonconforming lesbians creatively resist these limitations and subvert platform design to assert their politicized queer identities. This research highlights how biopower operates within digital dating platforms while also illuminating the subversive strategies users employ to reclaim agency. By situating gender nonconforming lesbian …

Hidden In Plain Sight: Chinos, Casta, And La Florida, Kylie A. Culver
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
"Hidden in Plain Sight: Chinos, Casta, and La Florida" looks at the origin and use of the term chino/a within the Spanish casta system, focusing on its role in the St. Augustine Parish Archives from 1693 to 1754. In the St. Augustine parish registers, there were thirty-two separate entries that consisted of chinos/as. The presence of multiple individuals identified as chinos in Spanish Florida highlights the diversity of colonial Spain and demonstrates crucial understandings of the legal effects of casta. A careful analysis of these individuals reveals that the term chino/a did not necessarily refer to people of Asian origin …

The Knowledge, Ability And Willingness Of Instructors To Accommodate Students With Disabilities In Higher Education, Hawa Allarakhia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents the findings of a study investigating the knowledge, ability, and willingness of faculty at a large university to accommodate students with disabilities (SWD). It reveals that while many instructors demonstrate a solid understanding of disability legislation, variations in knowledge and confidence exist based on demographic factors, particularly years of experience. Accommodations like extended time and distraction-free testing environments are more likely to be received positively by instructors and granted easily, while there needs to be more inclination to offer resource-intensive options like note-takers. The study also recommends future research and practical strategies for higher education institutions to …

Perceived Loneliness During Covid-19 And Young Adult Mental Well-Being: Testing Socioeconomic Status As A Moderator, Falescia Matlock, Michael Langlais
Perceived Loneliness During Covid-19 And Young Adult Mental Well-Being: Testing Socioeconomic Status As A Moderator, Falescia Matlock, Michael Langlais
KIP Articles
It is not currently known how perceived loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with emerging adults’ mental health and whether socioeconomic status (SES) moderated this relationship. The psychosocial development theory states that emerging adults experience a psychological conflict—intimacy versus isolation—where the goal is to seek connections; without connections, emerging adults are likely to experience mental health challenges. These challenges may be exacerbated for those with lower SES. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of perceived social distancing guidelines on the mental health of emerging adults and if this relationship is moderated by SES. This study …

Considering What Counts: Inside United States Child Maltreatment Statistics, Keith R. Johnson, Joel Best
Numeracy
The counting process which produces statistics is a human enterprise that reflects the needs and interests of the counters. This is clear in the case of the social problem of child abuse. Many different social groups and subprofessions are located in government bureaucracies organized to protect children and preserve families. Official statistics about how many children are abused (officially “maltreated”) vary markedly among the different states. The magnitude of the disparities among jurisdictions cannot be explained without changing one’s perspective about the nature of official counts. They come less from measuring child maltreatment than measuring the divergent ways that state …

Matching Ends With Means: Tomorrow’S Defense Budget, Frank Hoffman
GNSI Publications
In 2010, Admiral Mike Mullen, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, quipped that “the most significant threat to our national security is our debt.” At the time, many thought he was out of line with this bold but prescient statement. Currently, most analysts take for granted that drastic action is needed to fix the deep hole that spending and deficit financing have dug in the U.S. treasury. The scale of debt limits the U.S. government from sustaining key functions such as income security and health care, as well as national security. Unfortunately, at the same time, rising competitors …

Understanding the mechanisms that enable rapid growth in platform-based technology start-ups represents a complex yet crucial research imperative for contemporary scholarship. To develop a comprehensive taxonomy of factors that facilitate rapid growth, we conducted a narrative integrative review and thematic synthesis to identify key prerequisites for the successful scaling of platform businesses. Employing purposeful sampling, we then conducted qualitative interviews (N = 13) with founders of two-sided platform start-ups to validate our findings. Our analysis reveals a multidimensional framework of success factors, systematically categorized into entrepreneurial attitudes, organizational resources, and capabilities, strategic business practices and external environmental factors. The findings …

Surveying New Battlegrounds: Ukraine And The Future Of Cognitive Warfare, Chad M. Briggs, Anita Tusor
Journal of Strategic Security
Cognitive warfare (CW) has emerged as a decisive battlespace in modern conflict, shifting the focus from physical terrain to the perceptions and resilience of societies. This article analyzes the Russian Federation's application of CW in Ukraine since 2013, contrasting it with the strategic concepts developed by the People's Republic of China (PRC). Russia's approach, rooted in Soviet-era maskirovka and reflexive control, integrates cyber operations, disinformation, and the use of non-state proxies, including private military companies, organized crime, and the Russian Orthodox Church, to destabilize adversaries and manufacture uncertainty. In response, Ukraine has demonstrated remarkable resilience through a whole-of-society mobilization, effectively …
