Creating Covid-19 Stigma By Referencing The Novel Coronavirus As The "Chinese Virus" On Twitter: Quantitative Analysis Of Social Media Data, Henna Budhwani, Ruoyan Sun
All publications
Background: Stigma is the deleterious, structural force that devalues members of groups that hold undesirable characteristics. Since stigma is created and reinforced by society-through in-person and online social interactions-referencing the novel coronavirus as the "Chinese virus" or "China virus" has the potential to create and perpetuate stigma.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess if there was an increase in the prevalence and frequency of the phrases "Chinese virus" and "China virus" on Twitter after the March 16, 2020, US presidential reference of this term.
Methods: Using the Sysomos software (Sysomos, Inc), we extracted tweets from the United …

Development Of Karst Landscape Unit Maps For Houston County Minnesota, U.S.A., Jeffrey A. Green, John D. Barry
Sinkhole Conference 2020
In karst areas, there is a close relationship between the landscape surface and the bedrock below. Classification of the karst landscape helps identify the groundwater characteristics beneath it. Common indicators of karst, such as springs, sinkholes, and sinking streams, are not always present, therefore karst landscapes were identi-fied through analysis of landscape position and geologic setting. A karst landscape unit describes a unique system that includes the surface and its connections to underlying aquifers. Identifying and mapping these units allows for better water and land resource management and planning. The process began with observations of patterns on the landscape through …

Submarine Groundwater Discharge Along The Northern Coast Of The Yucatán Peninsula, Dorina Murgulet, Audrey R. Douglas, Jorge Alfredo Herrera Silveira, Ismael Mariño Tapia, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson
Sinkhole Conference 2020
The peculiar intrinsic geological and hydrogeological features of karst aquifers enable an immense capacity of karst aquifers to store and carry contaminants from sources to potential discharge zones (e.g., coastal seas). In coastal settings, the function of karst aquifers is closely linked to the sea. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is critical for coastal ecosystems and their services. This research aims to promote understanding of the spatial variability of SGD, and its potential role in delivering contaminants, along the nearshore Gulf of Mexico of the northern Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico using a combination of stable (oxygen-δ18O and hydrogen- δD) and …

Karst Water Resource Management And Sustainable Educational Practices In Nine Yucatec Maya Communities, Khristin Nicole Landry Montes, Patricia A. Mcanany, Dylan J. Clark, Iván Batún Alpuche
Sinkhole Conference 2020
The karst landscape of Yucatán, Mexico is dotted with thousands of sinkholes that provide access to fresh water. These features, called “cenotes” in Spanish and “dz’onot” in Yucatec Maya, range from subterranean caverns with well-developed speleothems to open-air sinkholes. While there is a variety of cenote types, all are connected to the subterranean freshwater aquifer. The interconnectivity of cenotes magnifies the impact of cenote contamination. Because of their significance as water sources, cenotes were conceived by ancient Maya peoples as important portals to powerful supernatural forces and guardians of rain. Today, cenotes remain culturally important and are located near the …

Anchorite Sacred Caves In Serbia: Balancing Between Pilgrimage And Religious Tourism Development, Aleksandar Antić
KIP Articles
Serbia is a country with diverse karst terrain, full of various surface and underground karst formations. This terrain is one of the factors that influenced the development of cultures and civilizations in this area. Many archaeological findings indicate that prehistoric people found refuge, safety and peace in many caves in present-day Serbia. The natural environment has also influenced many spiritual endeavours, which have shaped cultural identities throughout history. In this study, Orthodox anchorite sacred caves in Serbia are explored, as well as their related pilgrimage activities and potential for religious tourism development. For the purpose of this research, three pilgrimage …

A rapid degradation of aquatic vegetations in Taihu Lake has roused a wide attention in recent years. Giving large-scale harvesting activity on aquatic vegetation since 2012, whether water eutrophication or the human harvest activity induced the degradation remains controversial and unclear. In this study, based on Landsat and HJ-CCD data acquired from 1984 to 2016 and a 12-year field observation (2005–2016) of water quality, a method was proposed to quantitatively assess impacts of harvesting activity and water quality change on degradations of both floating-leaved aquatic vegetation (FAV) and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in Taihu Lake. First, areas of FAV and …

The influence of terrestrial and marine input has dramatically changed eutrophication in coastal seas over the past 100 years. In this study, Zhoushan coastal sea (ZCS) is taken as a study area. We studied ZCS as it is a sink of the temporal and spatial variation of primary productivity, dominant species of algae, and the variation of provenance in this area over the past 100 years. We performed analysis using three sediment cores and the carbon and silicon deposition records. The analysis results demonstrate that: (1) The primary productivity in the northern area of the ZCS close to the Yangtze …

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health
Corclima is an organization that works closely with the Monteverde Institute and the Monteverde community to promote climate resilience and to help people make significant sustainable actions within their own homes. They help the community in lots of different ways with different plans and actions. Mostly they help facilitate action and motivate people to help out in those actions (Corclima). Originally, I was hoping to work with them and interview members of the community about biking and Corclima’s biking initiatives specifically. When did they begin cycling, what got them interested etc. However, due to the Coronavirus, this no longer became …

I will be researching the practical application of creating and implementing composting into different production processes. I will be working with Justin Welch to understand the composting business that he has successfully begun. Additionally, I will be furthering my understanding by looking into how his business makes their compost and what are the best “cocktails” of micro-organisms to make different kinds of compost for different kinds of production systems. My goal through this research is to understand how compost is created, implemented and can be profitable for a business. This will allow me to be able to create educational materials …

Molecular And Cellular Differences In Cardiac Repair Of Male And Female Mice, Amanda B. Pullen, Vasundhara Kain, Charles N. Serhan, Ganesh V. Halade
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Background Leukocyte-directed biosynthesis of specialized proresolving mediators (SPMs) orchestrates physiological inflammation after myocardial infarction. Deficiency of SPMs drives pathological and nonresolving inflammation, leading to heart failure (HF). Differences in SPMs and inflammatory responses caused by sex-specific differences are of interest. We differentiated leukocyte-directed biosynthesis of lipid mediators in male and female mice, focusing on leukocyte populations, structural remodeling, functional recovery, and survival rates. Methods and Results Risk-free male and female C57BL/6 mice were selected as naïve controls or subjected to myocardial infarction surgery. Molecular and cellular mechanisms that differentiate survival, heart function, and structure and leukocyte-directed lipid mediators were quantified …

Heavy Reliance On Plants For Romanian Cave Bears Evidenced By Amino Acid Nitrogen Isotope Analysis, Yuichi I. Naito, Ioana N. Meleg, Marius Robu
KIP Articles
Heavy reliance on plants is rare in Carnivora and mostly limited to relatively small species in subtropical settings. The feeding behaviors of extinct cave bears living during Pleistocene cold periods at middle latitudes have been intensely studied using various approaches including isotopic analyses of fossil collagen. In contrast to cave bears from all other regions in Europe, some individuals from Romania show exceptionally high δ15N values that might be indicative of meat consumption. Herbivory on plants with high δ15N values cannot be ruled out based on this method, however. Here we apply an approach using the δ15N values of individual …
Breakthroughs In Obtaining Qm/Mm Free Energies, Phillip S. Hudson
Breakthroughs In Obtaining Qm/Mm Free Energies, Phillip S. Hudson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The computation of free energy is pivotal to understanding the fundamental nature of chemical phenomena. That is, whether a specific molecular outcome occurs spontaneously or is inherently unfavorable. The need to do this with consistent accuracy begs for the use of quantum mechanical (QM) methods. However, techniques for directly computing free energy differences with QM or mixed QM/MM methods are untenable, as the computational expense is quite exorbitant. At present, the most feasible approach for obtaining QM/MM free energies is employing the so-called indirect cycle, which relies on accurately computing free energy differences between low (e.g., molecular mechanical, MM) and …
Geographical Disparity Of Suicide, Masiel Perez-Balaguer
Geographical Disparity Of Suicide, Masiel Perez-Balaguer
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Suicide has been one of the leading causes of death in the United States for several years (Census, 2017). Multiple studies have looked at the disparity of suicide rates across geographical locations (Wilkinson, 1984; Saunderson,1998; Morrell, 1999). These studies have shown a correlation between rural areas and higher rates of suicide. For this study, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was taken and linked with population data acquired through the Census. This was done for the year 2017 to see any correlation between location and suicide rate could be observed. States were split into six categories …
Exploring Traits Linked To Commercial Sexual Exploitation: Psychopathy Vs. Impulsivity, Jennifer Diaz, Klejdis Bilali, Joan Reid
Exploring Traits Linked To Commercial Sexual Exploitation: Psychopathy Vs. Impulsivity, Jennifer Diaz, Klejdis Bilali, Joan Reid
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Limited research has investigated potential traits linked to commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) such as impulsivity or psychopathy. The current study explored whether psychopathic traits and impulsivity increased risk for commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) using data from 1,354 youthful male and female offenders, of whom 8% (N = 114) reported CSE. Results of binomial logistic regression indicated that psychopathic traits increase the risk for CSE while impulsivity does not. With each increase in youth psychopathy score, there was a 7% increase in the likelihood of CSE. These findings may inform prevention efforts aimed at youth at risk for involvement in CSE.

Simulation And Verification Of Phase Change Materials For Thermal Energy Storage, Marwan Mosubah Belaed
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have a global impact on world economies and the ecosystem. Scientific assessment of GHG emissions is an issue that requires immediate action from key decision-makers and influencers. A comprehensive review of the impact of climate change and its dire consequences on daily life is illustrated in this dissertation. The most common technique to lower GHG emissions in the atmosphere is by switching GHG emission sources to zero-emission sources such as solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy, and geothermal power. Recently, all these technologies have made significant progress in lowering capital operation costs and their cycle efficiencies. This …
Evaluating Public Health Policies On Food, Nisuka Williams
Evaluating Public Health Policies On Food, Nisuka Williams
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
The food we eat is governed and sometimes rightfully so. There are taxes and policies meant to protect consumers and children from products that hurt our health. This thesis has gathered data and analyzed if these policies are performing in favor of the desired outcome. Is a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages making a healthy difference? Does taxing and eliminating processed foods high in saturated fatty acids benefit the health of citizens? Does restricting foods marketed to children promote lower percentages of obesity in young children? The results in this study support that a tax on sugary beverages is not working …

Eye-Tracking Guilt Induction, Cassandra Ellison, Jordan Cooper, Wendy M. Rote, Max Owens
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Previous studies have shown a difference in perceptions of maternal guilt induction when there are variations in the situation of the event and the structure of the maternal guilt inducting statement (Rote, 2017). This research expands on this by examining whether differences in attention to specific words within guilt inductive statements may underly previously observed variations. Using eye-tracking methodology and hypothetical vignettes, this study examined which words college-aged students attended to most within maternal guilt inductive statements. Vignettes varied in the topic over which guilt was induced (e.g., moral transgression vs personal choice), the focus of the mother’s criticism (behavior …

Despite over seven decades of production and hundreds of oil spills per year, there were no comprehensive baselines for petroleum contamination in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) prior to this study. Subsequent to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) spill, we implemented Gulf-wide fish surveys extending over seven years (2011–2018). A total of 2,503 fishes, comprised of 91 species, were sampled from 359 locations and evaluated for biliary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations. The northern GoM had significantly higher total biliary PAH concentrations than the West Florida Shelf, and coastal regions off Mexico and Cuba. The highest concentrations of biliary PAH …
