Development And Photophysical Characterization Of Bioinspired Materials, Qaisar Maqbool
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Porphyrins are versatile aromatic macrocycles with unique photophysical properties that make them attractive for applications in light harvesting, photocatalysis, and sustainable energy conversion. Incorporating porphyrins into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offers a unique opportunity to modulate their photophysical behavior through spatial confinement and host–guest interactions. This thesis explores how structural modifications influence porphyrin excited-state behavior through a multi-stage investigation. The work begins by comparing the photophysical properties of two cationic porphyrins: tetra(N-methylpyridyl) porphyrin(TMPyP) and tetra(4-N,N,N-trimethylanilinium) porphyrin(4TANP). While TMPyP exhibits significant singlet–charge transfer (S₁–CT) state mixing due to charge delocalization onto peripheral pyridinium groups, 4TANP lacks comparable behavior. The localized nature of …

Evaluating The Protective Role Of Epo-R76e In Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death In Retinal Pigment Epithelium, Jemima Alam
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) causes dysfunction and loss of Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The degeneration and death of RPE cells causes irreversible visual impairment. Oxidative stress is a widely accepted triggering factor for RPE dysfunction. A hormone called Erythropoietin (EPO) is responsible to facilitate the erythropoiesis process, prevents progenitor cells from apoptosis and protects photoreceptors downregulating retinal degeneration. In this study, we aim to elucidate the role of EPO in downregulating oxidative stress in RPE. It is hypothesized that EPO will have a positive impact on suppressing oxidative stress and ferroptosis-mediated RPE degeneration due to its vital role in apoptosis …

Ischemic stroke-induced blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption plays a critical role in the progression of neuroinflammation and exacerbates neuronal injury. The LANDO pathway involved in endocytosis has been implicated in regulating receptor recycling and immune cell responses. Using LANDO-deficient transgenic mice, we investigated the role of LANDO in ischemia-induced BBB dysfunction. Our results show that LANDO deficiency leads to increased BBB permeability and more severe cerebral edema, as evidenced by Evans blue extravasation and plasma IgG infiltration. This heightened permeability correlates with an increase in infarct size, neurological deficits, and reduced survival. Notably, LANDO deficiency impairs junctional protein redistribution in cerebral …

Sh2 Domain Protein E (She) And Abl Signaling Regulate Blood Vessel Size, Surendra Kumar Anand
Sh2 Domain Protein E (She) And Abl Signaling Regulate Blood Vessel Size, Surendra Kumar Anand
International Visiting Researcher Showcase
Src homology 2 domain containing E (She) protein was previously identified in a screen for proteins that interact with Abelson (Abl)-kinase. However, its biological role has remained unknown. Here we demonstrate that She and Abl signaling regulate vessel size in zebrafish embryos and human endothelial cell culture. Zebrafish she mutants displayed increased endothelial cell number, enlarged lumen size and defects in blood flow and vessel elasticity, eventually leading to vessel collapse. ScRNA-seq analysis identified a set of novel genes which are differentially expressed in she mutants. Vascular endothelial specific overexpression of she was sufficient to restrict the vessel size. Chemical …

Enhancing State-Of-The-Art Motor Imagery Classification With Reinforcement Learning, Anton Shepelev
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
One of the key obstacles to the rapid adoption of non-invasive Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) for Motor Imagery (MI) is the low signal-to-noise ratio, and the substantial data requirements which can be mentally taxing for users. EEGNet, a compact Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), has long been considered the state-of-the-art (SOTA) for MI classification, demonstrating strong performance even with limited data. However, recent studies advocate for integrating Deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) to further enhance classification accuracy by dynamically optimizing feature extraction and decision-making processes. Despite this potential, practical implementations remain scarce due to challenges in stabilizing RL training and adapting it to …

Gnsi Decision Brief: The United States Military Recruiting Crisis, Guido Rossi
GNSI Decision Briefs
Recent news stories reported that the U.S. military is currently experiencing an unprecedented recruiting crisis. In fact, between 2022-2023, the U.S. armed forces (the Army in particular) failed to meet their numbers by a large margin: against goals of 232,021 accessions for 2022 and 244,533 for 2023, the branches collectively missed their targets by 40,369 and 41,336 accessions respectively. Even though the branches proved able to meet their recruitment goals – although barely – in fiscal year 2024, concerns continue to linger.
Although military recruitment is usually not a significant issue for voters, it became a central promise for the …
