Self-Segregation, Sense Of Belonging, And Social Support: An Inquiry Into The Practices And Perceptions Of Chinese Graduate Students At An American Mid-Atlantic University, P. J. Moore-Jones

Journal of Global Education and Research

Chinese students studying in the United States face great challenges when adapting to cultural, linguistic, and pedagogical differences. Although discouraged in the literature, self-segregation is a practice common among some international students and is especially prevalent in the Chinese community. This qualitative study explored the motivation and frequency of this practice vis-à-vis social support, and its effect on the participants’ sense of belonging. Insider status was employed to conduct focus groups of mainland Chinese students currently enrolled in graduate programs at a Mid-Atlantic University in the United States. Findings from the study explore how administrators, educators, and the students themselves …

Outside The Boundaries Of Biomedicine: A Culture-Centered Approach To Female Patients Living Undiagnosed And Chronically Ill, Bianca Siegenthaler Jun 2022

Outside The Boundaries Of Biomedicine: A Culture-Centered Approach To Female Patients Living Undiagnosed And Chronically Ill, Bianca Siegenthaler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As a community who voices feeling misunderstood, unheard, and uncared for by the medical system, female patients who live undiagnosed and chronically ill and their health narratives lie beyond biomedical boundaries. To examine how chronically ill and undiagnosed female patients narrate their experiences in and with the biomedical system and how these narratives resist biomedical health standards, I employ semi-structured interviews with 20 female patients living undiagnosed and chronically ill as well as engage in critical autoethnography to recount my own health experiences living a part of this community. In utilizing the culture-centered approach to health communication as a theoretical …

Integration Of Sustainability Into Higher Education Policies: A Case Study Of The University Of South Florida, Mehmet Z. Apaydin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are not new notions for higher education institutions (HEIs). However, well-organized efforts to make campuses "sustainable" are not common, and the efforts are modest compared to the institutional capabilities. This thesis, a case study of the University of South Florida (USF), was designed to explore how sustainability values and SDGs are incorporated into higher education policies. To accomplish this, the study employed a mixed method design that includes a literature review, an overview of policies and implementations, document content analysis, a program and course inventory, a keyword analysis, and semi-structured interviews. …

Complaint Patterns In Us Nursing Homes: 2013-2017, Kallol Kumar Bhattacharyya May 2022

Complaint Patterns In Us Nursing Homes: 2013-2017, Kallol Kumar Bhattacharyya

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Complaints provide valuable information to consumers about nursing homes (NHs). Complaints that are substantiated often lead to an investigation and potentially a deficiency citation. In recent years, Nursing Home Quality data show mixed results. According to some Federal reports, one of the four data sets that measure residents’ quality of care in NHs, consumer complaints, suggest that residents’ concerns over quality have increased. In contrast, the other three datasets, i.e., deficiencies through annual recertification surveys, staffing levels, and clinical quality measures, reveal potential improvement in NH quality of services. The purpose of this dissertation is to carry out analyses of …

Boredom, Interoceptive Ability, And Emotional Eating, Erica Ahlich May 2022

Boredom, Interoceptive Ability, And Emotional Eating, Erica Ahlich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Emotional eating is a commonly described phenomenon reported by individuals across the weight spectrum. Not only does existing evidence suggest it is not an effective emotion regulation strategy, but emotional eating is also associated with difficulty losing weight during weight loss interventions and other negative health outcomes. The majority of existing work in the area of emotional eating has focused on the broad dimensions of negative and positive affect. Yet, there are data suggesting that different emotions appear to produce different changes in eating behaviors, suggesting the importance of investigating the influence of discrete emotions on eating. The lack of …

Mental Health And The Effects Of Stress And Violence On Migrant Farmworker Communities During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Russell Rice Manzano May 2022

Mental Health And The Effects Of Stress And Violence On Migrant Farmworker Communities During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Russell Rice Manzano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Immigrants encounter numerous vulnerabilities during the migration process and after arrival due to stressors and violence that they may experience. Many also face dangerous labor conditions, discrimination, violence, and aggressive immigration tactics in the United States. The prolonged exposure to these stressors can create suffering for these vulnerable populations, continuing to exacerbate existing inequalities.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, immigrants have also faced new challenges that often perpetuate inequities that already existed in society. Immigrants often suffer from inadequate access to healthcare, marginalization due to legal status, and fear, which was worsened during the height of …

The Multidimensional Test Anxiety Scale: A Latent Profile Analysis And An Examination Of Measurement Invariance, Gabrielle Francis May 2022

The Multidimensional Test Anxiety Scale: A Latent Profile Analysis And An Examination Of Measurement Invariance, Gabrielle Francis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Standardized testing is an integral part of the English and American education systems. The objectives of these tests are to evaluate students, teachers, and schools. However, this evaluation has unintended consequences, one of which is test anxiety. Over the last 50 years, there has been an increase in studies on test anxiety because of the widespread use of standardized tests (Hembree, 1988; von der Embse et al., 2019). However, two areas that have seen little attention are the measurement invariance of test anxiety scales across demographic groups, and the creation of classification standards for these test anxiety scales to increase …

Unmasking Polly: Race And Disguise In Eighteenth-Century Plantation Space, Kristen Hanley Cardozo

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera has influenced popular culture since its debut. Its 1729 sequel, Polly, has been understudied by literary critics, perhaps because of its suppression in Gay’s lifetime. However, Polly offers scholars new views on British imperialism before an active abolition movement in Britain. Gay confronts the evils of colonialism through his theatrical use of disguise. While other Caribbean plays of the period allow white characters to reinvent themselves abroad, in Polly disguise only intensifies the self, while the higher stakes of plantation space are where the characters meet the fates originally designated for them in The …

Seeking Margaret Baker: Identifying The Author Of Three Manuscript Receipt Books, Kimberley G. Connor May 2022

Seeking Margaret Baker: Identifying The Author Of Three Manuscript Receipt Books, Kimberley G. Connor

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This paper uses recipe contributors named in three early modern manuscript receipt books (Sloane MS 2485, Sloane MS 2486 and Folger V.a 619) to identify the author as Margaret Baker, daughter of Richard Baker the Chronicler (c.1568-1645) and Margaret Mainwaring (died c.1652). A familial connection is also made to Wellcome MS 212. The Margaret Baker example is used to argue for the necessity of identifying a broader range of receipt, or recipe, book writers in order to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of recipe book production, and their social context. In the case of Margaret Baker, additional information about …

Succubus Matters, Jeremy Chow May 2022

Succubus Matters, Jeremy Chow

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay argues that the Gothic succubus pioneers new frameworks for examining female sexuality, sexual violation, and consent in the eighteenth century. M. G. Lewis’s The Monk (1796) reveals the Bleeding Nun as a demonic female ghost that is both sadistic and hypersexualized, especially in her tryst with Don Raymond. The spectrality of the succubus reimagines the displacement of the female body as something both material and ethereal, and in so doing, renders consequent displacements of consent, agency, and sexuality, which may characterize queer Gothic tropes. I interweave discussions of consent alongside representations and theories of ghosts throughout the eighteenth …

Whole‐Room Ultraviolet Sanitization As A Method For The Site‐Level Treatment Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans, Robert Kwait, Kathleen Kerwin, Carl Herzog, Joan Bennett, Sally Padhi, Isabelle Zoccolo, Brooke Maslo

KIP Articles

White‐nose syndrome (WNS), a catastrophic fungal disease of hibernating bats, is perpetuated by environmental reservoirs of the fungal pathogen, Pseudogymnoascus destructans . Surviving bats clear infection each summer but are re‐infected upon return to the hibernaculum. Therefore, addressing environmental reservoirs is critical for managing WNS. Ultraviolet (UV) light is known to kill P. destructans in the lab, and whole‐room UV sanitization is a common practice in many commercial settings. However, effective UV treatment at the hibernaculum scale has yet to be confirmed. Importantly, existing standard practices likely require modification for implementation in hibernation sites. Prior to field testing, confirming the …

Roadway-Associated Culverts May Serve As A Transmission Corridor For Pseudogymnoascus Destructans And White-Nose Syndrome In The Coastal Plains And Coastal Region Of Georgia, Usa, Kelly E. Lutsch, Ashley G. Mcdonald, Kyle T. Gabriel, Christopher T. Cornelison

KIP Articles

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a disease among hibernating North American bats caused by the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. Since its discovery in New York state, US, in 2006, and as of 2020, WNS has rapidly spread to 34 American states and seven Canadian provinces, causing precipitous declines of native bat populations across North America. The rapid spread of this fungal pathogen has been facilitated by the social behavior of bats, as well as the ability of subterranean hibernacula to support a favorable environment for P. destructans, and is probably exacerbated by anthropogenic transmission events. Although many bat species roost in …

Alpha Synuclein: A Therapeutic Target And Biomarker For Parkinson’S Disease, Max Chase Apr 2022

Alpha Synuclein: A Therapeutic Target And Biomarker For Parkinson’S Disease, Max Chase

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parkinson’s Disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s Disease, and the most common motor disorder. In fact, nearly a third of those with AD have PD. A major hallmark of PD is the appearance of Lewy Bodies, proteinaceous cytoplasm inclusions, that build up and spread throughout the CNS in a prion like fashion. The major component of these Lewy Bodies is a protein called alpha-synuclein. Alpha-syn is a 14kDa protein made of 140 amino acids and found in the presynaptic ends of CNS neurons, acting as a chaperone and regulator. The protein is also found in the …

A Model-Based Fault Diagnosis In Dynamic Systems Via Asynchronous Motors System Identification Or Testing, And Control Engineering Observers, Kenelt Pierre

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Induction machines are the workhorse of many military and commercialtypes of equipment. They are asynchronous machines referred to in this dissertation as induction motors. They are widely used due to their reliability in Naval Unmanned Systems like Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV), Unmanned Untethered Underwater Vehicles (UUV), Autonomous Undersea Vehicles (AUV), and platforms like Missiles and Satellites. These induction motors are mainly controlled using variable speed drive functions, i.e., thrusters, propellers, and actuators. Though they are very robust, to harness the full technical benefits of induction motors, state-of-the-art drivers or controllers must be used to control such motors.

In model-based fault …
