Do Industries' Political Profiles Affect Their Portfolio Return Performance?, Shaddy S. Douidar
Do Industries' Political Profiles Affect Their Portfolio Return Performance?, Shaddy S. Douidar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The political profiles of an industry influence its performance due to its impact on industry-level investor sentiment and idiosyncratic risk. I form eight comprehensive political profile portfolios after double sorting on industry-level: (1) political geography proxied by political alignment, (2) corporate political strategies (CPS), proxied by donations to political action committees & lobbying expenditures, (3) and government interference, proxied by dependence on procurement contracts & federal regulations, and exhibit that an industries’ political profiles impact its returns. Industries with high political alignment, concentrated corporate political strategies, and low government interference, deemed the high-performance portfolio, earn an annualized alpha of 10.3428%, …
Rehabilitation Technologies To Abate Infiltration In Sanitary Sewers, Steve Youssef
Rehabilitation Technologies To Abate Infiltration In Sanitary Sewers, Steve Youssef
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In urban coastal environments, sewer infrastructure is plagued by infiltration which seeps into aging and compromised pipes. Infiltration increases pumping costs, reduces treatment efficiency, and may trigger release of partially treated wastewater at water reclamation facilities. To restore pipes and abate infiltration, local utilities rely on structural and non-structural trenchless rehabilitation technologies. These methods are commonly used throughout the United States and the world due to their numerous benefits compared to traditional open-cut construction. However, limited data is available regarding their efficacy in reducing infiltration in sewer systems. In this study, we analysed infiltration in a small urban sewershed in …

Exploring The Phenomenon Of Hope In Adult Illiterate Haitians, Donita Grissom, Joyce Nutta, Edwidge Crevecoeur-Bryant, Sherron K. Roberts
Journal of Global Education and Research
Snyder’s hope theory depicts hope, through the frame of positive psychology, as a cognitive construct with the perceived sense of goal-directed, pathways, and agency thinking (Snyder et al., 1991). Hope levels have been measured in various countries; however, no research to date focused on Haitians. This study, conducted in Petit-Goâve, Haiti, addressed this gap by investigating hope, pathway, and agency levels derived from 135 Haitian-Kreyol adult literacy course participants. This manuscript reports scores of illiterate Haitians’ hope levels utilizing Snyder’s Adult Hope Dispositional Scale; the scores are explained by Snyder’s hope theory taking Haitian cultural and social landscapes into account. …

Evaluating The Covid-19 Pandemic Changes On Hotel Organizational Culture, Christos Kakarougkas, Theodoros Stavrinoudis, Moschos Psimoulis
Journal of Global Business Insights
The strong negative consequences caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic created the need for a scientific investigation of changes that occurred in the organizational culture of the hospitality industry. This research paper, using the Delphi method, served three purposes. It first assesses the changes that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to selected cultural components (product, external relations, and entrepreneurship strategy) that shape a hotel’s organizational culture, and determines how it interacts with other stakeholders on an inter-organizational level. Secondly, it links these changes to the three directions of change: formal/revolutionary, informal/evolutionary, and hybrid. Thirdly, it suggests specific policies …

Stochastic Modeling Of The Eruption History Of Nyiragongo Volcano In The Virunga Volcanic Province, Western Branch Of The East African Rift System, Thystere M. Bantidi, Georges T. Mavonga
Statistics in Volcanology
The modeling of statistical distribution of the eruptive frequency provides basic information to quantitatively assess the volcanic hazard and constrain the physics of the eruptive process. Here, we discuss the statistics of the time series of lateral eruptions of the Nyiragongo volcano in the Virunga Volcanic Province, western branch of the East African Rift System. We examine eruption data with a volcanic explosivity index of at least 1 listed in the Global Volcanism Network Bulletins. After investigating the completeness, stationarity, and independence of the eruption time series, we employ five distribution models (Brownian passage time, gamma, log-logistic, lognormal, and Weibull) …

Diode-Pumped Multipass Cavity Raman Gas Sensor And Method Of Use, Andreas Muller, Juan Sebastian Gomez Velez
USF Patents
A method for enhancement of spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) from gases comprising a multimode blue laser diode which receives feedback from a near concentric bidirectional multipass cavity in such a way as to generate a circulating power of order 100 W for a sample volume of 10 mm3. The feedback, provided via a volume Bragg grating, reduces the laser bandwidth to 4 cm−1. Spectra of spontaneous Raman scattering from ambient atmospheric air, detected collinearly with the pump, were recorded with a limit of detection below 1 part-per-million.

Nrf2 Sequestration By Ssh1 Tips The Balance From Neuroprotection To Neurodegeneration In Alzheimer’S Disease, Sara G. Cazzaro Buosi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative damage is one of the earliest events in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis and precedes the clinical stage of disease. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) is activated in response to oxidative stress, which protects the brain from oxidative damage and AD pathogenesis. Although Nrf2-mediated oxidative stress response declines with age and becomes dysfunctional in AD brains, the mechanistic basis for this dysfunction is unknown. Here, we demonstrate through in vitro and in vivo models, as well as in human AD brain tissue, that Slingshot homolog-1 (SSH1) acts as a counterweight to neuroprotective Nrf2 in response to oxidative stress …
I'Ll Make A Man Out Of You: Precarious Manhood Beliefs Among Heterosexual-Cisgender Men And Queer Men, Serena L. Wasilewski
I'Ll Make A Man Out Of You: Precarious Manhood Beliefs Among Heterosexual-Cisgender Men And Queer Men, Serena L. Wasilewski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traditional masculine gender stereotypes often suggest that men should be strong, assertive, and athletic, and these stereotypes promote men’s dominance in society and gender inequality. Endorsement of masculine stereotypes may also contribute to heterosexual men being more prejudiced against queer men. Queer men experience unique difficulties in their quest to abide by social norms defining manhood. Research using the precarious manhood theory suggests that manhood is difficult to obtain and even more challenging to maintain. Given the emerging nature of precarious manhood studies, little is known about young men’s perceptions of the precarious nature of manhood and how this may …

Is That Route Really The Most Fuel-Efficient?, Mark Burris, Mahim Khan, Jeremy Johnson
Research Reports
Many travelers use Google Maps to select the route for their trip and the Google recommendation can have a significant impact on traffic congestion. Google recently added a new route option: the most fuel-efficient route. In theory, the algorithm behind this route selection (Route E) examines the current travel conditions on the available routes and estimates typical fuel consumption based on those conditions. This should include acceleration/deceleration events as these change of speed events significantly impact fuel consumption and are a critical aspect of selecting the most fuel-efficient route, especially when comparing freeway general purpose lanes (GPLs) to Express Lanes/Managed …

Multiple regression is one of the most powerful analysis techniques available to hospitality and tourism researchers for complex problems that may include prediction, mediation, and moderation. The interpretation of the results requires a two-step hierarchical approach. The first step is to determine whether the researcher has findings worth interpreting and reporting and the second step is to determine the effect(s) origins. This second step involves evaluating both the 𝛽-weights and structure coefficients. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of 𝛽-weights and structure coefficients while reporting univariate multiple regression results by hospitality and tourism researchers. …
